Ubuntu :: Machine Shut Down When Running Idle?
Sep 3, 2010
I recently got my laptop setup as an Ubuntu machine, but if I just leave it running, after a while I'll look over and see that it has shut down. I have gone through the power management options and I do not see anything there regarding this. So I was wondering if this is a feature in the 10.04 version?

Offlate I installed F11 i586 on my laptop. F11 shares the hard disk with Vista Home Premium 32-bit. The problem is that when running F11 (or even Ubuntu), my system shut off suddenly(not a normal OS shut down, but a sudden power off without any warning). This could have been a hardware trouble(heating) but it doesn't happen with Vista.
Machine specifications:
Maker: Toshiba
Model: Satellite L305D-S5881
AMD Turion X2 Dual Core Mobile Processor RM-70
3072 MB 800 MHz SDRAM
I don't want to open up my machine unnecessarily, if it isn't a hardware issue.
I am not sure how to verify the bit length of the machine and the OS and does it create a compatibility issue ?
Your advise would be highly appreciated.

When I shut my Ubuntu 10.04 (Dell B110) down, it immediately turns back on and boots up.The same thing happens when I shut the machine down via the terminal (sudo shutdown -h now)The machine also boots up into XP and Win 7. When I shut down the machine from those two OS's, it works fine.I have found a thread or two here in which users seem to be reporting a similar problem --- but they all seem to be able to shut down via the command line

I'm trying to write a script to run motion when the computer is idle but for some reason the script I found online doesn't work. I tried to write a simple command to put some echo in a file when the screen server starts and stops but this doesn't work also. this is the script I'm using -
Code:
#!/usr/bin/perl
#open (IN, "$cmd |");
my $cmd = "dbus-monitor --session "type='signal',interface='org.gnome.ScreenSaver',member='SessionIdleChanged'"";

I disabled autologin as one suggestion on how to get the machine to shut down.
But now, I cannot get to the system, except at a command prompt, and gdm will not give the display. I can login, but cannot do anything else, including getting to a desktop or to the administration section to recheck the autologin option.
How do I do this?

I am running a local webserver mainly for development. I have everything set up. The issue I currently have is that I cannot shut down the machine from the command line. I can issue the command but the machine remains on. I also cannot get to the desktop via VNC.The reason for this, is that there is no monitor attached so Ubuntu says that it is trying to run in Low Graphics Mode. I found this out as I plugged the monitor in to my server.So question is, how do I get around this? How can I set up Ubuntu to get past this, or do I need to install Ubuntu Server?

I have installed the guest OS on the redhat 5 with XEN. I found the guest OS can be started on host boot UP, but it cannot be shutdown on host shutdown. so,I need to creat the script to shut down the virtual machine
The script as following:
# Get the VM list
VMLIST=`xm list`
for VM in $VMLIST
do
xm shutdown $VM
# delay a bit the next sequence
sleep 3
done
run the script,the virtual machine can be shutdown, bu at the same time the error info will appear:
Error: Domain 'Name' does not exist.
[Code]...
So,all the strings in the line of the output regard as the Name of VM The script will run the command like "xm shutdown Time(s)" ,"xm shutdown State",and so on. How Can I get the guest OS name in the output of "xm list" I just nend to get the virtual machine name, the script to run the command "xm shutdown windows2003" and "xm shutdown windowsXP" how to find the strings "windows2003" and "windowsXP" when input the command "xm list"

It's really weird, some applications simply don't start up. Skype for one, just shuts down before logging in, and Calibre shuts down instantly, when I try to run it. I've tried to remove and re-install it, but that doesn't do any good.

I'm fairly new to fedora. I used Fedora 14 on a virtual machine just to mess around with it a little while back but thats about it. As far as linux goes, I just test a bunch but can never seem to pull myself away from windows. I am hoping this is the time but these issues are the weirdest I've seen on any linux distro ever. My GPU (Radeon 5750) is running at 69C idle and the fan is at full speed. I am not overclocking it at all and I'm using the default drivers that came with fedora. It works just fine in windows and a lot cooler. How can I fix this?
I'm running the Gnome 3 desktop version, which I am also getting some graphics artifacts. In the bottom bar I get a dashed white line that comes up every time I boot and goes away when I make the bar expand. Also in the applications window I get the same dashed line at the top of the window and sometimes the top of the scroll bar. So far I really like Gnome 3 (Idk why everyone is whining about it) and I'd like to stick with Fedora, and linux for that matter

I'm know very little about Linux but decided to set up a machine running Drupal CMS on a Debian machine and it won't go. The folks at Drupal have tried to help but it seems the Debian OS won't do it's PHP thing for Drupal.
That means i'll have to start at the START I guess.
how to become a master of Linux if one is starting from ABC (I can add and subtract, that's what it feels like)

When I run top d 0.5 on my machine and I press 1 to enable the SMP View, I notice that all of the CPUs keep toggling between 100%idle and 0% idle.
The odd part is that when a CPU goes to 0.0% idle, I would expect to see one or more of the other columns peek, but they are not.
What is causing this?

I am getting seriously tired of running MS Office in a virtual machine. It's been about 18 months since I tried running in on Wine, so I just checked out WineHQ and CodeWeavers and apparently usability hasn't improved at all.
I keep trying to use OpenOffice but whenever I open PowerPoint presentations they are always kind of messed up. This week, somebody sent me an MS Word file for printing labels for a mail merge and the label template file opened up blank. Anybody else have any brilliant work arounds or am I still stuck with my MS Office VirtualBox!! It's really hard to believe that its 2011 and Linux is still missing a world-class Office Suite...

I want to do two things: Set up a virtual machine on Windows 7 to run Ubuntu Set up a way for the virtual machine to read the windows disk or windows to have read/write access to the virtual machine's disk. My goal is to have a place where both Ubuntu and Windows can read and write. What software is good for this task? Are their free programs that can run virtual machines? Also if my machine is running Windows 7 64-bit, can I install Ubuntu 32-bit? Or am I forced to use Ubuntu 64-bit? Or does it not matter?

I'm currently running 32 bit Ubuntu 10.10 on my laptop. Apparently, my computer can support 64bit OS. My / and /home partitions are separated and exist on different physical hard drives. Is it possible to just install 64bit ubuntu over my 32bit existing installation? Could I preserve the customizations I've made? what about application settings like chrome, firefox, compiz, etc.? Would I have to meticulously reinstall all of the little things I've done to my ubuntu installation?

I'm installing (X/Lubuntu) on a machine with only 448 mb RAM and a 2GHz processor. I'd definitively prefer Xubuntu, but if it'll be very sluggish I'll go for Lubuntu, because it is important that the machine runs at a decent speed. So which should I go for? Is 448 mb RAM enough for Xubuntu?

I've assembled a new computer to replace a dead Xp/Debian dual boot machine. I have been persuaded to go for Ubuntu as a Linux-only box, running Win7 as a virtual machine. I had some help setting it up with two discs in a Raid1 array, and it works pretty well. One of those discs is, I notice, set up as bootable.
But.... it is causing a major headache in respect of USB when emulating windows. I cannot use devices such as my USB printer at present, and I have an urgent task which requires printing capability and Windows. I have spent time trying to sort the USB problem without success and have decided to take an alternative route for the present.
I have purchased two extra discs which are not included in the Raid array, with the intention of using one of them for a Win7 installation, making the machine dual-boot for now. Eventually the intention is to revert to Linux only with a 4-disc Raid.
And don't know how to proceed. I formatted one of the new discs to NTFS using Ubuntu's Disc Utility, and tried to install Win7 on that disc. I get a warning that Windows cannot find a suitable disc on which to install. I've tried with XP as well, and this copies all its files before proudly announcing that there is no suitable disc space on this machine. Two new 1Tb discs and no space!

I can't connect a printer to my machine that's running Ubuntu 10.04 because it's outdated; however, I have another computer (Mac) that has a printer attached to it. Does anyone know how I can connect to that computer form my Ubuntu machine and send over documents to be printed on my Mac? Maybe through a remote desktop? Or SSL?

I am trying to run open a GUI program on a remote Ubuntu machine using ssh.
I want to open, lets say firefox or skype, on a machine I have connected to via ssh.
But when writing logging in with user2 and writing sudo -u user1 firefox I get an error message saying no display specified.
The machine is turned on and logged in with user1, it just appears that i cant get ubuntu to recognize that there is a GUI available.

after some tweaking i managed to get nessus installed on my machine. However i'm running into an issue when trying to add a user.The nessus daemon is running on my machine, i've registered. I think everything is peachy in that regard, but when i run:
Code:
zachadmin@ubuntu:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/nessusd restart
$Shutting down Nessus : .
$Starting Nessus : .[code].....
Obviously the command not found is my error, from what i understand there isn't a default user placed in the first time.So essentially i have thie program installed, but i can't access it.

I have 3 boxes running opensuse-11.4 64 bit - Phenom-I 2.6 GHz, Intel Q9400 quad core 2.66 GHz and Intel SU7300 dual core 1.3 GHz (the last one is a laptop). When I run a KVM virtual machine and load it quite a lot all host OS freeze. Interestingly, the laptop works the longest (hours), while the fastest system with Q9400 freezes in max. 10 minutes. After a hard reboot there is nothing in /var/log/messages This bug is 100% reproducible. The guest OS is either RHEL or openSUSE. Is it a 11.4 bug or I am missing something? Have not tried the same hardware with RHEL-6.

I have an offer for a free outdated laptop, and wondering if it's possible to run skype on this. It will be running with a very stripped-down Ubuntu Linux operating system, and no other graphical goodies hogging up the processing power.
The specs will be:
400 Mhz Celeron processor
Approx 300 MB RAM
Rest is unknown.
Think this is capable of running skype with video?
