Ubuntu Servers :: Adding A New HDD To A Running System

Mar 8, 2010

I currently have an Ubuntu Server setup with a CF card that has / and /boot on their own partitions. I also have a single 1TB drive that is dedicated to the /home partition, however it's a drive that I have run out of space on.

I just purchased a 1.5TB drive to throw in the server, but I am not sure how to set this drive up so that it's seamlessly integrated with the 1TB drive. I would like it setup so that my /home partition is expanded from 1Tb to 2.5TB. I know what I am explaining is similar to raid 0, of which I am not opposed to, except that everything I have searched for online solely explains a raid setup during installation, and I don't have the time (due to school) to reinstall and reconfigure my system.

So in a nutshell, is there a way to setup raid 0 without doing a re-install or is there a way to setup 'fstab' to accomadate my request?

I'm running low on disk space on my 10.04 server install. I'm running my normal partitioning without any lvm.

Is there a way I can create a new lvm set from my /home which is almost full and a new hdd to expand space just on that partition without killing everything on it?

Hardware :: Adding A LVM Hard Disk To A System Already Running/using LVM?

Aug 9, 2010

I have two systems, both having file systems running on LVM. System No 1 has 2 PATA HDD (40 and 80 GB) running linux on LVM. System 2 has a single SATA HDD (300 GB) which again uses LVM. What i was trying to do was to add the two HDD in system 1 to system 2, possibly with little or no data loss. So i connected the PATA drives from system 1 to system 2 and booted up. The system booted up to the openSUSE 11.3 splash screen and stopped after scanning the HDDs. Frankly i never expected openSUSE to try n auto mount the new drives. I think the problem was caused because both the systems had VG and LV of the same names. Can the volume group be renamed, maybe from a live CD or somthing?? System 2 is not boot able now.

Fedora Servers :: Convert A Running System To RAID Level 1?

Sep 30, 2009

I was recently requested to try and convert a running system to RAID level 1. I did not succeed in this task. However, I am still interested in accomplishing this task in a test environment. What I did was create a RAID device with a device missing e.g.

mdadm --create /dev/md0 --level=1 --raid-devices=2 missing /dev/sdb2

Once the RAID was up and running I created the /etc/mdadm.conf file so that it would activate the RAID device on boot. Once the device was created I copied all the data from the running root filesystem to the /dev/md0 device. The only directory that I didn't copy was the /proc directory. When I rebooted the machine I had a kernel panic and the system couldn't find /dev/root. I would greatly appreciate it if someone could provide some information/tips regarding the problem.

Software :: Mdadm 2.6.4 - Adding Disk To Running Linear Array

Jan 31, 2010

I am using mdadm 2.6.4 for managing RAIDs on Linux kernel 2.6.18. I've a query like whenever I tried to add a new disk to a running linear array(JBOD)i get a message "cannot add new disk to this array".

The exact steps are as follows:
create a new array as:
mdadm -C /dev/md0 -llinear -n2 /dev/sata/ /dev/sata2
It is getting added and i am able to see with -D command.

Now add a new disk sata3 as follows:
mdadm --grow /dev/md0 --add /dev/sata3 I get the output as:
md: sdb has invalid sb, not importing!
md: md_import_device returned -22
mdadm: cannot add new disk to this array.

So my first doubt is whether mdadm 2.6.4 supports this features or not if it supports then do I need to change the driver?

Red Hat :: Running IPmonitor To Monitor The Disk Usage On Our Servers - Running Df -h

Mar 19, 2010

We are running IPmonitor to monitor the disk usage on our Linux servers. It does not seem to coincide with what is reported when running df -h. For example on a Red Hat 5.3 server - our IPmonitor shows that 85% is used on the /usr partition, however when I do a df -h on the server it shows that 91% is used. Why there would be a discrepancy? IPmonitor uses SNMP.

Ubuntu Servers :: Adding NIC To Server?

This probably sounds like a stupid question, but I need to add a NIC to an existing server running Ubuntu Server edition 8.10. My question is what changes I need to make once the NIC is physically installed? I guess it will not be autoconfigured, so I will have to add it to the /etc/network/interfaces manually, which is ok as I need to set it up with a static interface anyway. Is there a good How-to or set of instructions on how to do this?

I already have my new server up and running(for the most part), and want to add the old hard drive to it. How would I do this without losing any information. I believe even my old drive is formatted to ext4. I was going to just throw it in there, but I'm afraid of losing information as I really don't want to lose a 1tb of info. I did try to search, but my title had too many common words in it.

Ubuntu :: Internal Disk In A Running System Usb-booted System Does Not Result In The System Detecting The Disk

Feb 27, 2011

My system decided to crash on me, hard. It was humming along happily for about 2 months and now doesn't boot. If I boot from hard-disk, I get grub. Launching the first kernel choice hangs. I thought maybe the install was corrupt, so I booted from usb install disk. The usb hdd didn't boot; something about an error trying to access /dev/sda . Unplugging the internal disk and plugging in the usb install disk does result in the system booting. Plugging in the internal disk in a running system usb-booted system does not result in the system detecting the disk.

How do I know if the disk is physically broken? This seems unlikely since it does manage to launch grub consistently. Or is this still possible? How can I try to mount whatever is left? The usb install disk doesn't even list the /dev/sd*. Any pointers on how to reformat the drive if it's not being mounted?

Then, I'll load a (live Ubuntu), from my thumb drive and boot into my new PC, and move the Ubuntu partition to another location, in order to create the partition needed to install a Windows OS. I know that Windows, God bless them, needs to be first on the HDD. This procedure will destroy the grub loader. Then rebooting should load correctly to the grub bootloader, right?

Ubuntu Servers :: Adding Foreign Key Using MySQL Administrator Fails / Fix It?

Aug 27, 2010

I want to setup my MySQL database and have MySQL up and running. I sill look for a good editor to add and configure my tables, it appears that MySQL Administrator is the only GUI client available.
But when I try to add a foreign key to one of my tables, there appears to be a problem. Both of my tables are InnoDB and both have a primary key.
-First I choose the tab "Foreign Keys" on my CLIENT table.
-Then I press the green + sign to add a foreign key, it is default named new_fk_constraint.
-I choose my table USER in the Refer.Table dropdownbox
-And then I should be able to match the FK field and the PK field in the box on the right... but this box is empty. Double clicking shows nothing. I only can drag the user_id of the USER table to it, but have no option to select the foreign column.
What the hell is wrong here??? This client is years old and should be really REALLY working IMHO! I was told by a friend that there is no good client available and therefore he is using some Windows program for this...

Ubuntu Servers :: RAID5 - Re-adding Drive As Active, Not Spare?

Jan 13, 2011

I have a little nice Ubuntu server with 6x 1TB drives assebmbled into a RAID5 array. Recently SATA cable of one of the drives failed. So I ordered a new cable and ran the server in degraded mode for a few days. Like this:

Code:
/dev/md0:
Version : 00.90
Creation Time : Sat Sep 19 10:39:11 2009
Raid Level : raid5
Array Size : 4883812480 (4657.57 GiB 5001.02 GB)
code....

I'd like the 6th drive to be active, not spare, like before. Should I just wait for rebuild to be finished (it can easily take over 1 day)? Or should I add it somehow differently to be active immediately?

I'm not sure, but I think as I simulated failures unplugging one of the disk, after plugging it in again, the "failed" drive was active again and rebuilding was started as well of course. But it was 2 years ago, so...

The array works just fine for now - I can access files, etc. But I suspect, that in this state if another cable or drive fails, it won't survive anymore. Even after rebuilding is finished, but the 6th drive stays is still marked as "spare". Right?

Ubuntu Servers :: LDAP Users And Groups - Adding A User

Aug 4, 2011

I have Ubuntu 10.04.2 (Linux 2.6.32-33-server on x86_64) with OpenLDAP 2.4.21 and Webmin1.550. I converted my ldap database from another system with the older style schema (OpenLDAP 2.3.3 with slightly older Webmin version 1.480) and no longer use slapd.conf, but the newer slapd.d format.

It all works fine except for one thing. When I add a new user, it lets me type in the additional LDAP fields:

But when I click the Create button, all the fields get jumbled together in the Title/Position box with a diamond question mark delimiting the fields:

Modifying existing users (which have the Additional fields displaying correctly) also has the same result - it moves the fields all into the one Title/Position box with the diamond shapes with question marks inside between each entry. Is it a problem with my schema files? I tried reverting to the older shema files and slapd.conf and it still did the same thing on the new system. I am really at a loss.

Here is also the output of ldapsearch for that user (host and samba ids are sanitized):

Previously added users that show the fields properly have "description:" and then the field listed for each Additional LDAP field. Also shouldn't the "title" be visible in plain human readable text here? - it looks like it encrypted it somehow - similar to a password hash. The older system works fine and the fields are all readable and in their proper locations. But the new system just doesn't work right.

Ubuntu Installation :: Adding A 2nd Drive For XP To A Karmic System?

Jan 1, 2010

A local store built a brand new dual core system for me about a month ago with a 1TB drive and installed Karmic on the entire drive. I now have a piece of external hardware that requires XP and simply will not work in XP in Virtualbox. I have purchased another 1TB drive, and my thinking is to create an XP partition of about 2-300GB and leave the rest of the drive for another Karmic partition and dual-boot. I don't care which drive is primary (unless there is a reason I should).

I was thinking of unplugging the karmic drive and putting the new drive in it, installing XP on it, then adding the Karmic drive back to the system and editing one of the boot files to add the other operating system.

If so, which boot file should I edit? Which drive should be primary? Or, is there a better, easier way to do this?
