Ubuntu Servers :: Recommended System For Running Tomcat (for JIRA Etc) + GIT In WMWare?
Oct 9, 2010
I want to build a NAS like mini pc to be used as a simple tomcat server (for running Jira and perhaps experimenting a bit) and as a GIT server. What kind of system requirements would I have?
Would something like this:[URL]../nas/n...sed-nas-part-2 be sufficient? And if I'd virtualized everything via VMWares would that make a lot of difference?

I'm trying to get a Tomcat server running using the Java VM -server option on Ubuntu Karmic 9.10 (I'm using the official Karmic AMI on EC2: ami-bb709dd2)
I install Tomcat:
Code:
sudo apt-get -y install tomcat6
I set up a bit of configuration in /etc/default/tomcat6:
Code:
JAVA_OPTS="-Djava.awt.headless=true -Xms1024m -Xmx1024m -XX:PermSize=384m -XX:MaxPermSize=384m"
I can start Tomcat with no problems:
Code:
sudo /etc/init.d/tomcat6 restart
However, if I add the -server option into the JAVA_OPTS variable, like so:
Code:
JAVA_OPTS="-server -Djava.awt.headless=true -Xms1024m -Xmx1024m -XX:PermSize=384m -XX:MaxPermSize=384m"
I get this:
Code:
$ sudo /etc/init.d/tomcat6 restart
* Stopping Tomcat servlet engine tomcat6
...done.
* Starting Tomcat servlet engine tomcat6
Invalid option -server
Cannot parse command line arguments
How do I set the -server option correctly?

I am currently in the process of purchasing a new laptop, however there is such a great range of laptops out there. When I finally purchase a new laptop I will be running the latest Ubuntu on it (probaly 11.04 0r 11.10), I will be using the laptop for downloading and burning alot of movies to DVD's, watching movies (from DVD's and my portable hard drive), using office, surfing the web, using email and live chat as well as other basic tasks (updating and downloading software). I would really like to know what CPU and how much ram is recommended for a laptop running these processes regularly.

We're about to upgrade our Ubuntu server and are looking for a complete package set that includes a firewall, some kind of snoopy, and whatever else we "must have" or that would just be extremely useful. What do you guys find the most absolutely necessary and needed packages for running a linux server in regards to security and performance.

I currently have an Ubuntu Server setup with a CF card that has / and /boot on their own partitions. I also have a single 1TB drive that is dedicated to the /home partition, however it's a drive that I have run out of space on.
I just purchased a 1.5TB drive to throw in the server, but I am not sure how to set this drive up so that it's seamlessly integrated with the 1TB drive. I would like it setup so that my /home partition is expanded from 1Tb to 2.5TB. I know what I am explaining is similar to raid 0, of which I am not opposed to, except that everything I have searched for online solely explains a raid setup during installation, and I don't have the time (due to school) to reinstall and reconfigure my system.
So in a nutshell, is there a way to setup raid 0 without doing a re-install or is there a way to setup 'fstab' to accomadate my request?

I have a server setup with all my web development stuff in /var/www and in several sub-folders within that. (each project having it's own folder)It works great with one FTP account. But recently I've been getting help on a projects from a buddy of mine that freelances, and have made him an FTP user account as well. All is fine, except for when he tries to edit a file and gets a permissions error.
Here's the issue, I don't want us to have the same FTP login, but all the files are currently owned by my user name. So, when he logs in to edit a file, he can't because I'm the owner, and the files are set to 744. Will I cause any harm by adding both users to the same group (www-data) and chmod'ing the files to 775 so that we can both access and modify the files?

I decided to create a file server for my family. I have set up a RAID 6 (4 disk) array. My thoughts were to back up the array to a hard drive monthly. Store the drive in a WiebeTech Drivebox, off site, in a "fire proof" box. (The kind for papers sold at Staples or Office Depot. After a year, I would have 12 back-ups. I would then overwrite the previous hard drive. (i.e. HDD from March 2011 would be overwritten on March 2012.)
Additionally, I was wondering if there was recommended maintenance to verify the array is working properly. Right now, I am moving data to the array so quickly that I am backing up every few days between three hard drives. (Back-up #4 was written to Drive #1 after Drive #1 was reformatted.) I am aware that I could use rsync. (Which I currently use for backing up my portable USB HDD to the RAID array.)

I am building an email server in what I consider to be a 'small business'. I would say my Postfix mail server will house 300 mailboxes (Max). I have a decent server with enough RAM / disk space to run this email server however I don't know what the best way is to manage / configure the users mail boxes.
how to create a new user on the Linux server using 'adduser / useradd' and then setting their shell to /bin/nologin. This is because the mail user will never need to log into the shell of the mail server directly and can still populate email from their mailbox which is located in their /home/$user directory. Now many people I spoke with have advised me that this is a bad and cumbersome method of account administration.
I am running:
Postfix 2.5
Clamav v0.94.2
Amavisd-new 2.5.4
Dovecot 1.0.7
Spamassassin 3.2.5

I am having a problem.I use Ubuntu 10.04 server edition.Two computers on LAN one with Public Ip A other with local (Class C IP)say it BWith a third computer in same subnet I can access a TomCat application running on B as http://Ip of B:8080/applicationI want to use A as a Reverse Proxy for this application to be reachable from internet.So on Googling I came across some thing known as mod_ajp I enabled that on my Server A asa2enmod proxya2enmod proxy_ajpa2enmod headersbut after that I am not able to understand as how do I define vhost to be able to forward HTTP request which come on A as www.myserver.com/appto B which I can see internally as http://Ip of B:8080/application so Tomcat on B handles this.

Due to a ton of research I believe I now understand the output of ps, top, and free better than ever, and also have a relatively decent grasp on memory management (virtual address space, etc.) than I ever did before. With that being said, my server is super low on available memory and I can't make 1+1=2 on why it is. I suspect it's Tomcat/JVM (which I admittedly know precious little about). I am rebuilding this server (for a number of reasons) and plan to install 8GB but solving this mystery is key to supporting/promoting my design plans.
Relevant info So, I have very little memory left, I am swapping pretty hardcore, and even though I suspect it's the Tomcat/JVM stuff, it sure doesn't look like it from the memory tools. For that matter though it looks like "nothing" is using memory, or certainly not enough to cause such a low memory problem. The server was rebooted 24 days or so ago because it actually ran out of all virtual memory. How do I solve this mystery? Am I using the wrong tools? Am I misunderstanding my tools? What can I do to track down the processes depleting my memory?

I'm trying to access a .jsp page that is located on my apache/tomcat server from the web. I changed the connection port of tomcat to port 80 and changed my doc root from the default "webapps" to my normal web directory. However, whenever I try to visit the page, I only see the code of the page.
If you would like to see what I am talking about, feel free to see it for yourself:

My first time installing centos server and adding it to xp home network. I am new to setting up my own network in general. I have a home windows wired ethernet xp network (simple linxs router) with 2 xp boxes and one centos5 box all connected to the same router. I just set up the centos box running tomcat on port 8080. I need to do two very basic things at this point, but am not sure what I need to do:
What do I need to do so I can:
1. Connect in firefox on one of my xp boxes and call the tomcat server running on my centos box?
2. Be able to ftp to centos box from either of my xp boxes?

I built a 11.04 server system in vmware workstation a few days ago, set it up for something and now I have a strange problem. It boots without problem. I can login via ssh, the services run and everything is OK from the outside. But on the console there's just a fast blinking cursor on the screen, no login or anything to that affect. Just blank and a blinking cursor.

I was recently requested to try and convert a running system to RAID level 1. I did not succeed in this task. However, I am still interested in accomplishing this task in a test environment.What I did was create a RAID device with a device missing e.g.
mdadm --create /dev/md0 --level=1 --raid-devices=2 missing /dev/sdb2
Once the RAID was up and running I created the /etc/mdadm.conf file so that it would activate the RAID device on boot. Once the device was created I copied all the data from the running root filesystem to the /dev/md0 device. The only directory that I didn't copy was the /proc directory. When I rebooted the machine I had a kernel panic and the system couldn't find /dev/root. I would greatly appreciate it if someone could provide some information/tips regarding the problem.

I have to set up my development environment under OEL 5.4. The internal directory structure is more or less fixed, the question is where to put the whole application tree in standard FHS for the development phase.For production, the system will be deployed on a server where data is kept with an Oracle 11g database. Development goes with JDeveloper which has its own internal application/project directory structure; however, I whould like to be independent from this. Unfortunately, by carefully studying the web for FHS, if I will adhere to it I only find ready-made packages to put under /opt, for example. No development aspects are mentioned. make some proposal, possibly with respect to best practices.

On my Ubuntu 10.04 lucid lynx server edition machine I have an Apache http server listening on port 80 and today I installed the Funambol server which added an Apache Tomcat server listening on port 8080. From within my lan I can reach both servers, but from outside the lan I can only reach the http server on port 80 and not the Funambol server on port 8080. I get a time out message instead.
In my router I have setup port forwarding, such that both ports 80 and 8080 get forwarded to my server machine. Must Tomcat be told to listen to external requests? Is my server listening on port 8080 only for requests inside the lan? Or is there some authorization that fails when I try to visit from outside my lan?
Here is some netstat output, I don't know if the differences between the 80 line and the 8080 line are relevant:
Code:
remon@compaq:~$ sudo netstat -nlp | grep 80
tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:8009 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 1778/java

We need to only allow access to a web page only to some ips. We want to do this via Apache but it seems like the standard way of denying all and allowing some ips doesn't work because we mount a webapp using tomcat.
The sites-enabled file looks like this:
Code:
NameVirtualHost *:443
<VirtualHost *:443>
ServerName web.address.com:443
ErrorLog /var/log/apache2/app_ssl_error.log

So researching how to install Tomcat 6, I ran across a guide that specifically states there are issues with the repository version of Tomcat. Doing some more research it seems like this is reported in multiple places including a disussion on the official mailing list that was inconclusive. So my question is, if this is intended for a production server should I use the repository one or manually install it

And then installed successfully tomcat6 using apt-get install tomcat6 apt-get install tomcat6-admin tomcat6-examples tomcat6-docs Everything seem to be right, when I try the browser with http://localhost:8080 return a webpage with "It works !" and other text
But, if I try http://localhost:8080/manager/html then returns 404 error, the error is something like "The required resource (manager/html) is not available" (that is my translation from the spanish text "El recurso requerido (/manager/html) no est disponible")
