Considering to use Ubuntu 10.10 as my test box for various Linux projects. Initially I thought about using desktop, but since I use some server tools as well (Apache, MySQL, php, etc) I thought I might install 10.10 server and install the Gnome desktop on it. What are then the major differences to using 10.10 desktop and install the server components this,
apt-get --purge remove ubuntu-desktop Reading package lists... Building dependency tree... Reading state information... Package ubuntu-desktop is not installed, so not removed 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
I have installed Ubuntu desktop on Ubuntu Server to get Boinc manager running. Now I want to remove Ubuntu-desktop.
Second Problem: /etc/init.d/xorg start : No such file or directory When the server boots i get a blinking cursor.
is it would be possible create a Ubuntu dvd that contains the ubuntu server desktop and alternate install opptions, as well as all four main desktop environments (gnome, kde, xfce, lxde) and unity. since much of the data is redundant between each version cd's it would probably all fit on one disk. then all that would be needed is two disks one for 32 bit and another for 64 bit. i really think that this could work.
My present system consists of 4 computers all running Ubuntu (just upgraded to 10.04) and all have a Virtual windows installations to run applications for which there are no Linux substitutes. The "server" is a NAS that is merely a file repository. I want to replace the NAS with a new computer that acts as both a server and a local workstation. It would act as a repository for common files and would run a mail, calendar, contacts server for the LAN (no outside connections). What are the pros and cons of installing the server version of Ubuntu (or Kubuntu) then adding the appropriate desktop versus installing the desktop and adding some server functions?
I have both windows (xp and win7) and mac (osx snow leopard) running on my network. I'd like to find a unified system that I could use as a file server. Mainly, I'd like to have it hold music and movies, maybe run some automated backups from a win 7 desktop. I'd also like it to be a print server. I'd like to run the most simple and lightest weight OS for the server os. However, I don't think I have the basic linux knowledge to run Ubuntu Server as it is terminal based. I have installed it on my machine but I feel like im running in circles. I have it installed and can SSH in with my laptop no problem. I feel like I may be better off installing Ubuntu Desktop and removing what I dont need. at htis time the server has only a 40gig hdd in it, i also have a 500gb hdd i'd be using for the files.
I want to remote-desktop into a windows box that happens be hooked up to a linux server. The linux server uses a static IP. I've already enabled remote-desktop on the windows machine, but am wondering what I need to do server-side to make the server's ip forward to the windows machine. I know this can be done with iptables but I'm not sure how to work it.
On my local apache web server I had installed gnome desktop, because I wanted it to use as a TV. But when I installed the gnome desktop, my requests for web pages became terribly slow (4-5 seconds!). When I deinstalled the gnome desktop, the request where fast again. But I still want to watch TV on my server, so I wander if people know why the gnome desktop harms the performance of the server?
PS. with gnome desktop, ping was <1 ms, samba server worked like charm, wget localhost was <1 ms, but for some reason, when tried to get a webpage from my webserver to a remote machine, it took seriously 4-5 seconds to load a page.
How to setup my server to use it remotely from my Home from a WindowsXP PC.I want to access my CentOS server. I have inherited (Volunteered) this system at work. We have 5 HP 5730 thin clients set up as camera views for production. Set up was done by an I.T. who is no longer with the company and left no documentation. how to view the thin clients from the server. We need to refresh our views after power bumps. I have spent quite a few hours looking at info online and have gained a lot of ground, but still have not found my answer. Oh, I am an electrician. We are in a pretty remote area and the company expects us to gain knowledge outside of our realm. Our I.T. people are out of Portland and don't want to be bothered with this O.S. and are going to switch it to Windows to better support us. I have now grown a fascination for the Ubuntu and will keep playing with it at work and at home.
I have installed a Ubuntu server 10.04 in my virtualbox now I want a GUI desktop for my server I tried these two commands to get the desktop: sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop But it is really slow so is there a way to do this from a Ubuntu CD. I already have a cd of both ubuntu 10.04 for desktop and also a cd of alternate Ubuntu 10.04.
I have a dual boot - server edition and desktop on the same computer.I don't want to use GUI (minimize the resource), so I MUST use server edition. (IT IS A MUST, sorry... I know I can run server on desktop)Is it possible to run both server and desktop on the same screen?
What I am trying to achieve is a similar system to how windows networks.I have a folder on my server (/var/www) and I would like to share it via NFS so that when the server is on a folder appears in the network folder of my desktop and I am able to add, edit and delete folders and files as my non-root user (ryan). So far I have managed to install the NFS server and client and configured /etc/exports as so
Code:
/var/www/ *(rw,sync,no_root_squash)
I have then been able to mount the folder to my client using:
Is the Server or Desktop version of Ubuntu a better choice for a home file (and possibly a media) server?
To explain a little, I currently have a WinXP Pro pc that provides file storage for the users in our home (spouse, kids, self). On this pc I have a windows program ACRONIS running to perform automatic backup of every ones stuff. This has saved me many hours of headaches when someone has a HDD or PC failure. Everyone in the household directs all of their downloading activities to a download partition where I have an anti-virus & anti-malware program monitoring all new entries. This too seems to have been a good decision over the years. I'm trying to sort out which version of Ubuntu will be the most logical entry point.
I expect the questions I am seeking insight for are the normal getting started stuff. Using several different search criteria, I did not hit upon existing threads for the topic If there is a more appropriate forum / sub-forum, please let me know and I will take this question (thread) there.
i'v been using Ubuntu for several years now but i have only used it for basic home computing stuff (media, web and documents).
My question is can i use Ubuntu desktop as an email server for my own domain. I have never done anything like this before and am mainly doing it for experience. so i s this possible and if so how?
I'm switching over to Ubuntu from Slackware and was just reading up on the differences between desktop and server. My main question is if I can still setup an x-server on the server box. If I can what do I need to do to make it as easy as possible.
I'm a pretty much a linux newbie with some spare compy parts so I've decided to make a server to further my experience in the linux world. I recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop (was easier than Server edition with no GUI). What I want is a file server to share movies / music with my friends at school, that we could remotely access from school. I would like to leave this server at home.
I have read a lot on the net but I have not found someone with the same situation as me so have not got far. This would probably involve a single user login which I would give all so it would be strictly read-only, while only 1 user (me) would have admin capabilities. Is this even possible? I would be willing to try Ubuntu 10.04 server if anyone thinks it would be easier.
I have installed Ubentu server 10.4 and I add GUI of Kubentu on it. My problem is after restart it then come to the Kubentu desktop but I don't know how to control server roles from there ..
I have a karmic server and a separate karmic desktop (laptop). I want to run a few gui applications from the server to my desktop so they will be centralized. I can successfully ssh to my server from the laptop, but getting the gui stuff launched from the server to display on my laptop is where I am hitting a wall. I did:
$ ssh -Y knipknup@192.168.1.3
enter password
and I get:
/usr/bin/X11/xauth: error in locking authority file /home/knipknup/.Xauthority
I recently installed iFolder server on my 9.0.4 desktop computer. I cannot login as a user using a web interface or client. Using the correct password, it takes a long time, then tells me that the login may be incorrect. With an incorrect password, it tells me this immediately. I am able to login to the web admin interface, but the "System" tab will generate the following error after several minutes. code...
I'm running an 8.04 server and I'd like to have a gui option for my goddaughter to use. For various reasons I don't want to make any changes to the server and also for various reasons I'd like the gui desktop to be 9.10.
I had 9.10 running on another machine but the motherboard died on me. If I just slot that hdd into the machine, edit grub etc, will I be able to reconfigure for the different hardware or will it simply fail to boot? Wiping the drive and installing again wouldn't be the end of the world but it would save a lot of time if it's not necessary.
I have installed Ubuntu Server on my Laptop , i know i can download the Ubuntu Desktop package and use Ubuntu but is it possible to install the package using the Ubuntu 9.10 CD or DVD ? , rather than downloading the package since internet is too slow for me.
I set up the remote desktop on ubuntu and I connect to my current ubuntu's desktop with the VNC viewer. It is working, I see the mouse cursor, but I cannot see the files while I'm dragging them.
Another friend of mine has THE SAME problem.
I have installed and configurated NX server, and the problem is the same.
If I connect with the nx client, using a different session, I can control my desktop, I can drag windows and files, but if I'm using the shadow option from the nx client program, then I cannot drag windows and files.
I can install 6.06 desktop, but would like to move to a 8.04 server. I know I can do an upgrade from 6.06 desktop to 8.04 desktop, but how about to server? cdrom issues and heartache associated with other means of alternate iso installs are beating me up.
Every once in a while I see a great deal (like this one) on a Dell Server. I was wondering if there was any problems running Ubuntu on one of these machines for use as a desktop computer? I don't know much about servers but the specs look similar to a desktop computer.
turning a Ubuntu 10.04 desktop into a server. Ok, so let me start off with my goal. I am using this machine for hosting only 1 website using joomla, php, mysql, and apache. I want a desktop version because I dont like the black and white terminal.
At this point I have successfully installed all Ubuntu 10.04 desktop and all updates.
When searching around for this solution, I found that I could run the command sudo apt-get install ubuntu-server and get all the features the server edition has. When running this command it comes back telling me that it cannot be found. I also found that both the server and desktop edition are the same but the desktop edition comes with all the extras that I will need to delete. I also found out that I will need to use lamp on the server to get php and all the other server stuff, but I also found that some people recommended that I install the server apps using the synaptic search. My question is, what route should I take to turn this ubuntu 10.04 desktop into a dedicated web server. (Not Test Server). Remember, I would like to stay with the desktop and not black and white terminal.
My remote "NX Client" disconnects after 60' when server goes to sleep, leaving my session suspended.
