Ubuntu Security :: Sfill Still Crashes With Glibc?
Mar 1, 2010
I'm trying to wipe an old thumb drive down for later sale, but sfill always eventually explodes:
Code:
Creating /media/disk/oooooooo.ooo ... **************************************
Wiping inodes ...*** glibc detected ***
sfill: free(): invalid next size (fast): 0x0000000000609450 ***
Aborted
Is there an updated version of sfill, or an alternative blank-space wiping utility available?

I've been working to get gcc up and running on a new install of Fedora 13. glibc-devel had dependencies upon installation where it required glibc and glibc-common, both 2.12.1-3. No problem, found both at rpm dot pbone dot net. However, when I try to install the following circular dependency results... it doesn't matter the order of install.
Code:
[root AT localhost gcc_install]# rpm -ivh glibc-common-2.12.1-3.x86_64 .rpm
error: Failed dependencies:
glibc = 2.12.1-3 is needed by glibc-common-2.12.1-3.x86_64

I notice that these two packages contain the same files and uninstalling glibc-i18n doesn't uninstall the internationalization files, because they are also in the glibc package. Is this a mistake or is this normal or is there a reason for it ? I just made my own glibc package to fix this, but was wondering why this is the way it is...

I made an update of my Centos 5.5 yesterday. In doing so glibc has been updated to glibc.i686. Just now some of my FPGA tools crash. Unfortunately there isn't a downgrade for glibc.i686. How can I replace glibc.i686 by glibc.i386?A simple yum install glibc.i386 conflicts with the files from package glibc-2.5-65.i686

I am in very much need to resolve the issue of Upgrade redhat5 from glibc 2.5 to glibc 2.7. The problem is when I run a binary compiled on our build setup (glibc 2.11) on Suse 11 (glibc 2.9) it works fine...
But the same binary do not work on redhat enterprise version 5 telling error as need glibc2.7 or sometimes segmentation fault for the same binary execution.
I tried upgrading the redhat glibc 2.5 to glibc 2.7, but not successful.

Yesterday, I think I did something stupid: I removed kernel-headers, gcc, glibc-devel and glibc-headers. My box is a CentOS 5.4 webserver (it has loads of packages installed, but that was done through Virtualmin config, so it's quite coherent all in all). The thing is that now I need to reinstall at least the headers and glibc, but hey! this is what I get :

I hope that I'm posting this thread in the right place. This involves a very unique problem which has caused the .Trash-1000 folder for my external USB drive to become corrupted, to the point of causing massive heat problems which then causes my system to crash, i.e. become completely inoperable, forcing me to do a hard reset.
The scenario: Recently I went through all of my backup data which is what I use that external USB drive for. After finding several GB of data files, some dating back 2 - 3 years from a root server that I used to have, I went ahead and tried to delete all of those files. Well, with exception to 3 folders, containing no more than perhaps 35 files which totalled less than 8 MB in space, everything was deleted properly without a hitch. The files that couldn't be deleted prompted some strange "couldn't delete blahblahblah file due to input/output error" message. One message for each file that couldn't be deleted.
Now mind you, I can open these files, look at them, rename them, copy them, but I cannot delete them. Still being pretty wet as far as Linux is concerned, I tried numerous suggestions that I could find on the internet, all of which had to do with file permissions in one form or another. I've tried everything that made any sense and still can't delete those files.
All of the data is my own, all of the hardware is mine, and I'm the only one using this machine. I'm not attempting to do anything illegal. Then I figured, smart as I am, why don't I just assign ownership of the .Trash folder to myself via the chown -R command, followed by deleting the files afterwards. Okay, the chown command gave me no error, I assumed all was well since it's my USB drive to begin with and since it automounts during every restart anyway. I just figured that this would be something to try. BIG MISTAKE !!!
My system runs just as perfectly as before, with but one exception. NOW, when I attempt to delete those files that I couldn't delete before, I don't get an error message anymore but the CPU starts hyperventilating during the deletion process which goes on endlessly (remember, we're taking about less than 8 MB of data) ... ultimately causing the system to crash, i.e. become totally unresponsive. NOW, if I delete additional files from that USB drive and then attempt to empty the trash, the newly deleted files take substantially longer too now. Not as long as the original "bad files" but still quite long. The drive itself checks out fine and it's not a dual-boot system with Windows. Just did a virus check recently too and everything checks out in that regard as well.
Can someone tell me how to reassign whatever original values there were for that external drive .Trash folder? I think if I could restore those values to whatever they used to be before I used the chown -R command, perhaps then everything would be fine again as far as the crashing is concerned. HELP ....
(Please take a look at the screenshots too)
The last screenshots shows "preparing to delete" which takes a very long time. Then it takes anywhere from 15 to 45 seconds PER FILE before that miniscule file is actually supposedly deleted. Eventually, after a few files are deleted, the system crashes. I wrote "supposedly deleted" because after a reboot the files are still there .

Have homebrewed machine, was running Fedora 8. Installed Fedora 10.Firestarter firewall manager keeps crashing after about 5 minutes. Restarts, runs for a while, then crashes.Thought it might be an IPTABLES turf war with the native Fedora 10 gui firewall manager, so disabled that at System > Admin > Firewall. Also disabled SElinux. Still have problems.Firestarter firewall seems to work OK, just the gui Firestarter monitor/manager.If anyone has ideas as to cause, I'll take a clue.I could use Firestarter to generate the IPTABLES by ..manually editing the /etc/firestarter/inbound|outbound/allow-.. files and then../etc/init.d/firestarter restartBut I find the events log useful to look at. Anyone know where the events log file is kept in the file system?

Installed a new program that calls for GLIBC 2.8 and it immediately errors and quits(`GLIBC_2.8' not found ). Running Hardy Heron, YES, I know it is getting long in the tooth, but LTS? I should be able to install GLIBC 2.8? This boy can not find any reference to do so.
I'd upgrade, but running a laptop Dell Inspiron 6000 with ati X300 mobility (NEVER AGAIN WITH ATI! Give me Nvidia or give me death!) that has been put into legacy and is no longer supported by ati. So I am stuck on Hardy until I get a new laptop (Sometime in the year 2525 at the rate I can save money) The question(s) is/are:
1. Can GLIBC 2.8 (/lib/tls/i686/cmov/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.8') be installed on Hardy Heron easily?
2.Can it GLIBC 2.8 be installed with non-standard repos?
3. Can GLIBC 2.x be custom compiled *easily* to Hardy or am I looking at a whole can of worms. ("Dood, solution: apt-get dist-upgrade" >remember ATI?<) Finally if I am looking under the wrong rock... Where may I find a forum to guide me through this- if one exists?

I'm trying to install the latest debug flashplayer available here:

linked from this page
[URL]
I follow the embedded instructions and this is the error:
root@vostro-ubuntu:~# /home/berrie/work/download/install_flash_player_10_linux/flashplayer-installer
[: 258: closing paren expected
ERROR: Your glibc library is older than 2.3.

I'm running Ubuntu Karmic Koala and it is up to date.
Could it be that the flash installer parses the version number wrong as previously it was glibc-2.9-1, a '9' after the dot, now there is a '1'.

I use FC 10 on my desktop. It is great!. But I have some troubles with installing new software via yum or rpm. Most of install/update/upgrade transactions fail. The yum prints string: Error: Missing Dependency: glibc-common = 2.9-2 is needed by package glibc-2.9-2.x86_64 (installed) I tried to manually install or update the glibc-common via yum or rpm, but it fails. About every other release of wine in the Emulators build service lately seems to require an updated version of glibc that isn't available in any of my repositories, preventing me from upgrading currently I get:
Code:
nothing provides libc.so.6(GLIBC_2.11) needed by wine-1.1.42-31.3.i586 but earlier releases have had similar dependency issues, and this one doesn't seem like a safe one to ignore.
Has anyone else had this problem or is it just me? I've been grabbing GLIBC from the opensuse 11.2 Updates repo.

Recently, I am trying to use a complied software on Linux OS. I need to use X-Windows to do some initialize. When I run this software, I am getting the error: '/lib/tls/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.4' not found' I also checked the version of GLIBC on my computer, the highest one is GLIBC_2.3.4. So I have to update my glibc to 2.4 or higher. Some tips said it can be done using yum. I am a new user for linux. Could anyone guide me to do that?
