Ubuntu Security :: Installed Prixfixe Through Software Center To Edit The Menus - Restart/shutdown Buttons Didn't Work?

Jan 21, 2011

I run apache on a non standard port(82).I just installed unity to play around with it and while I was playing with it I installed prixfixe through software center to edit the menus. While prixfixe was installing my computer was acting very slow which was odd, but not completely unusual.During this time I ran ps aux which showed that my apache server was taking up most of the processing power.I was about to stop my web server, but I waited just in case the web server was updating a few things (I run ampache).

My computer finished installing the software and then I ran some command with sudo (I can't remember what the command was), but it threw back some message saying "setid blabla". I restarted my computer and when I got to my gdm my normal user account did not show up. There were no accounts and the restart/shutdown buttons didn't work. Now I'm running on a livecd and checking out my apache access logs, apache error logs, and kernel logs, but nothing looks out of place..

Fedora :: Shutdown/Restart/Logout Buttons Do Not Work After An Update?

Mar 8, 2010

I am running Fedora 12 with KDE on an Acer Aspire One netbook.

A recent update has caused the KDE shutdown/restart/logout buttons (found for example through the Fedora -> Leave menu or by pressing the power off switch)to stop working. I am having to shutdown using shutdown -P now command.

So I have the following questions:

a) Has anyone else had this issue and knows a workaround/fix?

b) Does anyone know what package these belong to so I can try an older version?

c) Does anyone know where this package writes its logs, or if I need to install anything for it to do so so I can have a look?

d) Does anyone know the command-line interface to these commands - that may give me either a more gentle workaround than shutdown -P now, or some insight into why the command is no longer working.

Ubuntu :: Installed Kubuntu Desktop And No Shutdown Or Restart In KDE

May 11, 2010

I just recently installed Kubuntu desktop onto Ubuntu and I don't have any shutdown or restart options shown in KDE, but they show up in Gnome. I initially installed Kubuntu using GDM instead of KDM and switched to KDM when I saw that my Gnome taskbars overlayed my KDE taskbars. To switch from GDM to KDM I used the following command:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm

After enabling KDM the terminal suggested a command to configure KDM, however I can't remember the command. I ran it and I got a message that KDM was already configured.

I had a lot of questions but I resolved all of them in the middle of this post (= I have another question but it isn't as important, does anyone know how to set up the cube? I'm sure I'll end up turning it off but I want to try it

Ubuntu :: Edit File Discovered It Didn't Exist - Configure Grub?

Jan 17, 2010

I have recently installed Ubuntu Karmic on my laptop, which also has Windows 7. It now has GRUB, and I have been able to modify some settings via the GRUB command line. However, these changes are not permanent; they are reset the next time I load GRUB. I have seen many people trying to configure GRUB who have been pointed towards /boot/grub/menu.lst. I expect it would) I went to edit that file... and discovered that it did not exist. I am certain that I am using GRUB, not some other bootloader. Is there another possible way to configure GRUB, or somewhere else I might look for this file?

Fedora :: Remote Shutdown From Gnome Menus?

Aug 7, 2010

I have a server with Fedora 13 installed and vnc-ltsp-config set up for remote desktop access. Seems to be working fine for everything I need, and with KDM instead of GDM, I'm even able to log in as root to Gnome.Which leads me to the problem. Logging in as root and I get the shutdown menu options in the Gnome "start menu". Log in as anyone else, no shutdown options. Logging in to the console as any user and I get the shutdown options.I want to enable the shutdown options for all users remotely. How can I go about doing this?

And I know someone will say "that's a bad idea". Don't worry, this is a small server at my mom's house I set up for her to run some web proxy filtering with Dan's Guardian and Privoxy. Since I'm typically logging in remotely from home using VNC of some flavor, I'd rather be able to reboot or shutdown through the menu (just more "natural" to me). I know I can shut down through the command line, but that's just too much work.

Fedora Servers :: Get Gnome Spin - Puppy Didn't Edit Boot Record Very Well

Dec 16, 2009

I want to set up a web server on a PIII machine with about 800MHz processor and just under 500 megs of RAM. So how would I go about configuring Fedora 12 to do this? I've tried the small spins and I just don't know how to configure it so it will install properly. I was able to get the Gnome spin on it but when it booted I couldn't get through the log-on screen. I have an AGP NVIDIA Geoforce 6200 video card. I'm wondering it that's it. The only Linux distros I could get on the machine was Puppy and Debian. Puppy did not edit the boot record very well. Debian went on there with very minor issues, but edited the master boot record very well so that I can dual boot to WindowsXp HE. I also tried to put Centos on there but the Live CD is not installable. I have to make an installation CD from the DVD Package. Anyways, as far as Fedora is concerned, I just want a utility, light weight spin that has web-server, mail server, and eventually MySQL. Other wise I'll have to commit treason and use the horned Debian as my savior in this battle.
