Is there hopefully a way to search for an exact string in Man Pages? I know if I want to search for anything containing -c I can just do this.
Code:
/-c
How would I search for "-c"? I want only "-c" to show up. So I tried this.
Code:
/"-c"
It took me literally and looked for the quotes also.

I remember, long ago when I used Linux, that I was able to launch a terminal, or any other program at that and have the ability to pass exactly where on my desktop I want it to appear. I would do this by placing some arguments in the applications launcher like
--title=TITLE
Does anyone know how to do this, I'd like to be able to launch a few different terminals, with different profiles and have them default to certain locations on my desktop/work area.

I'm seeing really bad user login format under a standard installation and am wondering why ubuntu does this as default. I have noticed that the graphical login for gnome sizes itself to accommodate a user's exact password length. This indicates to me that somewhere on the unencrypted part of a standard installation with user encryption contains at least some indication of the content of the password length which seems a security flaw even if not a complete hole, it majorly reduces the number of attempts a cracker would have to cycle through.
And that's assuming that *only* the length is contained. Furthermore it seems that it would be MUCH better to simply display the number of characters entered into the pw field and allowing the gui to expand itself from an fixed size as the field is filled out so the the user still receives visual feedback for entering characters. Either a simple character count display should be entered into the field or a 10 dot to new line so that one can visually quickly count the number enter by multiplying from a 10base graphical observation.

After a momentary power failure My server did not reboot due to a disk error. I rebooted and ran an disk repair and the machine booted fine. Now if I got to the update manager and try to update I get the following error:
E: Encountered a section with no Package: header
E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/us.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_lucid-updates_main_binary-i386_Packages
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.
I checked the file location listed the file is there (hidden). Should it be a hidden file? If so how do I repair this error? I went to the preferences of update manager and changed the following, Updates every 2 days from weekly, Changed the server location from US server to main server. The update manager ran and updated 13 files. I don't know what change repaired my issue but a guess is, changing the download location from the US server to the Main server.

OS is CentOS 5.5, and GNOME terminal emulator (v2.16.0). However I regard the question is not related with OS/Gnome version level. My question is whether if color setting is available or not for the text character outputted by kernel (or shell, i.e. Bash). Normally we can specify/modify text character color (and background color) with property setting on the terminal. However, it only takes affect to the text for inputting character, not for outputted character by kernel/shell. For example, when we type a shell command "ls -al <cr>", the text appears with the color along with the terminal property.
Meanwhile, the text message displayed on the console (output message against "ls -al" command), in this case it must be file and/or directory names, will appear with some preset color which we've not preliminarily set. In my case, I set Text color with "White", Background color with "Black". Then I expect the text output message color displayed by kernel/shell would be some brighter color. But the color is "blue" which does not look better brightness against "Black" background. For this situation what I'd like to know is how to set/specify the color outputted by the kernel/shell (or whether or not it is possible to set manually).

I'm not sure about the following behavior so thought I would put it out to see if there is an error I need to resolve, or simply a process that I need explained.I'm also not sure if this is an Ubuntu issue, a Linux issue, or other... but here goes.I ran my "make build" in two different ways; one with just "make build" and one with "make build > output" (so I could review the full script). With just "make build" the process finished and returned to the command prompt.
With "make build > output", after the process had finished (script in output document identical to what was in the terminal with "make build") a new set of data was displayed in the terminal (see below). With the other examples of using "make build > output" the times it would parse something back to the terminal window was when there was an error. As I fixed the errors these breaks back to the terminal window would stop. So I'm wondering if this indicates a new error, but because the "make build" now completes successfully (at least it appears to), I'm wondering if this data in the terminal window is just a behavior related to redirecting the output script using the ">" process and something to do with returning to the terminal once a process completes

I've just ssh'd into my Ubuntu 10.10 desktop for the first time was confronted this warning message.
Your CPU appears to be lacking expected security protections.
Please check your BIOS settings, or for more information, run: /usr/bin/check-bios-nx --verbose
I've run /usr/bin/check-bios-nx --verbose but this in not present on my install.
From what I understand the -nx option is for AMD processors, however I have an intel i5-750!

I'm trying to make ecryptfs work on my GMX Mediacenter share (a service quite popular in Germany). I followed the instructions to include my mediacenter share in my fstab which works pretty well. So now I'm able to connect via Secure WebDAV as a regular user (no sudo needed). When connected, I try to create a ecryptfs transparent layer so everything saved remotely is seamlessly encrypted. Although no error message is thrown during creation, the process fails. When entering the remote share (cd mediacenter) and performing any remote command such as "ls -la", the following error message is thrown:

This very weird, as I am also unable to do a print-screen when this message box is up.
what this message is all about and what does the executable /usr/libexec/mission-control do?

We use PAM to control access to our RHEL4 servers. We would like PAM to give a message, of our choice, when users who are not allowed to login try to login. PAM's default is to let the user try 3 times without any explanation.

I recently had to reinstall ubuntu, so I backed up both my ~.gnupgp and ~.gnome2 folders and copied them over in the new installation. My old keys show up just fine in the password manager, but when I attempt to open a file encrypted with one of them, I get the error: "Could not display (name of file): There is no application installed for PGP/MIME-encrypted message header files"
