Ubuntu Security :: Yahoo Spamming With Email (Vista)

My Email Address is spamming
1. I received an email (spam) on Yahoo Mail from someone who was not intending to send it. (While it did go to spam folder, I did 'open' the email (since it came from a trusted sender) but it only contained a link (which because of WOT) I assumed was spam.) I did NOT click the link.
2. I then informed him that his email addy was spamming.
3 Shortly thereafter, i noticed in Ubuntu (firefox) whenever I clicked "reply" to email back to someone, there was a quick flash of letters/numbers in the slot where I would normally write. This instantly disappears and goes blank so I can write something, so I just figured it was a bug. This is happening on BOTH windows and Ubuntu.
4 Now MY EMAIL is spamming people the people I write to.
So far: I have 1. Changed my Yahoo password 2. Deleted firefox 3. In windows Ran Spybot/Search-Destory AVG (turns up nothing) What else can I do?

I don't know what to do, I know how to block and delete pretty much every other type of abuse. I run a server with 500+ shared hosting clients and reseller clients and it was just blocked because of email spam. I can keep on top of all other abuse (people trying to do dos attacks etc) but the one thing I can't get my head around is email spamming. how to stop people spamming emails from my server?

I am running in a problem that i have put a postfix regex which needs to discard emails having no subjects, while it works fine for gmail,hotmail and other domains but it does not work for [URL] ultimate reason behind this is because yahoo does not send subject line if subject is not included in email.

I have been trying to figure out how to keep my company's email from being treated as junk mail by Hotmail, Yahoo & Gmail for over a year.
When I acquired the company its email was hosted by sina.com as its in China. It was being run under a windows server and had issues sending & receiving.
I moved it to a linux server system in Hong Kong that has a US co-host site in Chicago area thinking its got to better than whats running in China.
We are still having problems sending emails to hotmail, yahoo and gmail.
My entire company is about ready to redmond our company email and use their personal webmail accounts.

I'm using a friend's wireless connection. Unfortunately, she can't remember what the security key is. I've used it before on vista and that is how I can access the internet now, but I would rather be using ubuntu. Is there a way to read the key from windows, so I can put it into ubuntu? When I open the security tab of the connection's properties dialogue, the key is obscured and the "show characters" option greyed out. Even opening the admin account doesn't change this.

I am trying to access files on a laptop (running Windows 7) from an Ubuntu desktop running 9.10. I can view the Windows 7 files just fine. Listing their permissions from an Ubuntu terminal shows them to be read/write by everyone. But, I am unable to update any of the files from Ubuntu.
I mount the files using the command:
mount -t cifs //richard-pc/C -o username=***,password=***,dir_mode=0777,fi
le_mod=0777 /mnt/windows7c
The permissions on the Windows 7 files on the laptop are set to Full Control by Everyone.

Unable to send mail thus adjust protocol port and it worked. Things moving slow on computer. Thus ran clamtk virus scanner. It found a virus. Tried to quarantine it but not successful. Have GUI version 4.15 Antivirus engine .95.3. Virus is located at
/home/kim/.mozilla-thunderbird/zrlm4cOj.default/Mail/LocalFolders/Inbox Phishing.Heristics.Email.SpoofedDomain
What do I do to get rid of it?

If I am using SME server as a gateway/firewall/private server can I turn off Vista Firewall? At the moment there is only one computer hooked up. Soon there will be two. Main computer is running Vista, Absolute and Xubuntu, the other one when I hook it up will have XP and Xubuntu.

I have received an email with a .csv attachment from a bank, and need to know how to view the attachment without risk. Using View>Message Source I see a large solid block of random upper and lower case characters, whereas I would expect to see some readable text mixed in. The email subject and the attachment name both contain data specific to me, but the text of the email consists largely of disclaimers with no mention of my name or any clue as to the nature of the attachment. I am using Thunderbird as my email client.

I received a suspect E mail from paypal which I reported to them, I did'nt click on anything in the E mail. The Question I am asking is there any way that some one could get in to my email client Thunderbird or Firefox. When I used thunderbird to report the e mail I received a problem reporting that my email couldn,t be sent due to AOL smpt not excepting email because of ssl encrpyption. I checked the settings for the account all seemed ok ssl was still marked. Also while I was on the internet yesterday I got the popup regarding did I want to save a "file" I canceled as I didn,t click anything to download anything.

I'm fully aware that Linux, and Mac OS X are a far reach from Windows when it comes to viruses. I run Xubuntu 11.04 on the netbook, and Mac OS X 10.4 on a Mac Mini. But, and I now wish I kept the email and didn't delete the account, but the following happened recently: I received an email, from myself (I was on my own contacts list) that was sent to a few others on my contacts list - an email I did not send out. There was no subject, and an unclickable link that - once copy/pasted and gone to, was "Forbidden," even when you took the /s away and went to the main site, it was "Forbidden." It was a .be website (Belgium). Being that one of the recipients was "noreply@craigslist.com" I can only assume that this email was automated.
It was only sent to a few addresses, all of which were tied to my account. I changed the password, deleted my contacts, and deleted the address (and have a new one elsewhere). I ran ClamAV on here, an antivirus on my Mac Mini (and I'm running a different one now), and thus far, absolutely nothing. So my question is - Is it, then, even reasonably possible that either of my computers are infected, and if not, how did this occur? I'm just taken aback a little, considering I don't use or have Windows on any machine that I own, and extremely rarely use Windows when elsewhere (and not at all recently).

Why rkhunter isn't able to calculate the hash of those files and compare it with the stored one?
Other strange thing: for the "good" file, the hash is often different!
For example, in the last rkhunter.log, /bin/awk is "good".

My IP has been blocked by Composite Blocking List for " IP Address 207 is listed in the CBL. It appears to be infected with a spam sending trojan or proxy. It was last detected at 2011-01-02 11:00 GMT (+/- 30 minutes), approximately 1 days, 3 hours, 29 minutes ago. It has been relisted following a previous removal at 2010-12-30 17:15 GMT (3 days, 21 hours, 2 minutes ago)"
How do I find this "trojan" and remove it???? I have a network of 6 computers right now, 5 are running Ubuntu (3 server and 2 Desktop versions) and one windows computer. I have run a virus scan in the windows computer and found nothing. How can I scan a linux computer for a virus?

So I installed Ubuntu 10.10 beta because v9 wouldnt work, I'm using an HP Mini 311. So far everything was working great, and after installing updates I restarted and these "starting file manager" windows kept spamming the desktop!, just along the bottom and you can see in this screenshot basically on the bottom, how do i fix this? i dont want to go back to windows!

I know this is probably easy and if I only took a while to figure it out maybe I could but I have some stuff that needs to happen soon and I can't figure this out. I was wondering how I could have a log monitor that would email me whenever someone tries to login over ssh to my system. I'm open to everything daemons/scripts or cron itl works as I am not running a production server (but I might be starting that soon). Oh and just a side how do I get sent an email when I get port scanned

I have a mail server that accepts to relay from system in the trusted network. One of the systems in the trusted network is a webserver. On the webserver there are several scripts that send email.Let's focus on the PHP scripts. These use the mail() function for that.I am looking for means to reduce the potential abuse of the mail server when one of the PHP scripts is hacked.For the situation that the code is modified by a hacker or a new script is installed I would like to take this approach:
1) scan the system for scripts using the mail() function
2) generate a checksum list from these scripts
3) intercept email (being sent to sendmail) from these scripts
4) check if they match the checksum list
In theory (I will still have to implement it) this would take care of the situation in which new/modified scripts try to send email.
However, there is also the option of an exploit of some script. Are there any ideas on means to prevent email abuse for this situation (other that: make sure scripts cannot be exploited )?

I am building a PC that dual boots Kubuntu and Windows and want to share the email store. Therefore, I would like to have real time or on access scanning of emails in an antivirus program like Windows does. I am not running an email server, just a desktop using pop3 and eventually imap email.
In previous Debian versions ClamAV and Dazuko used to do this. However, I understand that this setup doesn't work in Lucid. I tried p3scan but that hasn't been updated since 2008, once I managed to install it, it failed to find clamd even though it was running. I understand that clamdrib no longer works for Thunderbird 3. Amavisd as a replacement for p3scan, but this seems to be for mail servers.
I would be really grateful if anyone could tell me how to get on access/real time virus scanning of pop3 and imap emails on a desktop running Lucid with either Thunderbird 3 or Kmail, without having to buy an antivirus program like Avast Or point me to an existing tutorial that I might have missed.
As an aside (don't want much do I?) does anyone know if Kmail can be setup to only download the headers like Thunderbird does?

I manage a linux-based network, where some projects are currently under development. Our IT policy states that any email attachment shall be encrypted using GPG. Can I block other attachments using a firewall?
Note: Currently our mail server is not in campus. So I can only use a firewall for this security issue.

When my 2 external usb hard drives (just storage based on ext3) are plugged and I'm booting Linux, it starts spamming plenty of output about these devices. I think during loading sensors daemon. At the end hangs. Previously I've noticed that the same happened on terminals. It was annoying, because spam was flooding even vim editor. I see this after major system update or rather new Linux installation. What I supposed to switch off to avoid this unwanted output?

I have a single hard-drive on a spare computer and I decided to try out Ubuntu on recommendation from a friend. I really like it now but at first I just dual-booted it, and now I want Vista gone. I know it's unnecessary to have just one OS but my hard-drive isn't particularly big and I'd prefer to have Ubuntu by itself. Can anyone tell me how to eliminate vista and leave Ubuntu as my sole operating system (I've all my files from computer on another computer so I don't have to worry about losing anything).
