Ubuntu :: Recovering Network Security Key From Vista
Aug 24, 2010
I'm using a friend's wireless connection. Unfortunately, she can't remember what the security key is. I've used it before on vista and that is how I can access the internet now, but I would rather be using ubuntu. Is there a way to read the key from windows, so I can put it into ubuntu? When I open the security tab of the connection's properties dialogue, the key is obscured and the "show characters" option greyed out. Even opening the admin account doesn't change this.

I am trying to transfer files from a SATA hard drive with Windows Vista (Home Premium) installed on it. Some files I can easily copy over, others just say Access Denied.
I'm sure permissions is part of the issue, unofrtunately Windows is unable to boot at all (surpise surprise) so I can't adjust anything from within in. I know with XP drives I can easily copy and paste onto my Ubuntu machine. I'm using a SATA to USB converter that let's me plug it in and my desktop reads it like an external hard drive.
I've gone into the properties and under permissions it shows my account as having access to Create and delete files under folder access amd "---" under File access. My group and others show None and --- for Folder and File access. I can post a link to a screenshot tomorrow. I've tried to also select Read and Write for File access but it goes back to the dashes before I can apply it.
I am running 64 bit Ubuntu 9.10 and do not have the sharing aspect installed. Any questions please feel free to ask me.

I recently accidentally corrupted my windows vista partition whilst trying to extend it via gparted under ubuntu 11.04 and then cancelling it shortly after starting. Resulting in me being unable to boot into vista (I don't have another copy of any windows OS so I'd really like not to have trashed this one )
Looking on gparted now my partition is Fat32(?) and apparently only has 36mb used =/

Let's begin from the top. I have a relatively new laptop that I've been running Ubuntu on (along with a little-used Windows boot). Picked it up in November or so, installed the current "latest" version of Ubuntu at the time (9.10). I have been doing incremental upgrades, and it's been progressively breaking down more and more. Yes, this includes 10.04.
After GRUB stopped working, I decided it was time to try a reinstall from the top. I told it to leave all the other operating systems alone and do a full reinstall.
Fortunately, I had managed to stuff most of my current work in duplicate locations during this whole debacle, somehow. Don't ask me how I managed to do that when GRUB wasn't working. However, when I installed, I conscientiously said "Oh, yes, Ubuntu, encrypt my home folder! I love privacy!" As a result, about... 30 gigabytes of useful (but ultimately re-downloadable) material is rather inaccessible at the moment. When I try to boot the old system using the newly fixed GRUB, it goes into kernel panic. This seems like a no-go.
I have a saved hojillion-character long passphrase for decryption from my install back in November. Conscientiously saved in the case of just such an emergency.
I read this how-to and followed it to the letter as far as I could tell, trying to mount with ecrytfs to recover my data.
[USERNAME] here is a proxy for my actual username. Yes, the location of my old home folder may seem a little bizarre.
Code:
sudo mount -t ecryptfs /media/c82ca9fe-2b15-4aca-a98d-6482b1d80a32/home/[USERNAME]/ /home/[USERNAME]/oldhome
Passphrase:
Select cipher:
1) aes: blocksize = 16; min keysize = 16; max keysize = 32 (not loaded)
[Code].....

I have recently recovered from an HDD failure on my Drobo. One of the disks died and corrupted the entire array (which is not supposed to happen). I have since managed to copy the data off onto smaller disks and after replacing the failed drive, have copied everything back.
Now that im up and running again, i was wondering how this situation would play out on encrypted disks, or in the case of a drobo a large encrypted partition (as you cannot encrypt the entire array).
Would i still be able to recover the data if i were to encrypt it? It is a 4.2TB array, and i assume that I would need to copy the data in its entirety to recover it, so using multiple smaller disks would be out of the question right?

After a disastrous upgrade to 10.04 I am at my wits end trying to recover my /home partition from my unbootable system. The /home partition is part of a RAID5 array across 4 disks and I've been trying to use some disk imaging tools from Ultimate Boot CD to recover it with, but none of the utilities seem to recognize or will let me work with my multi-disk device.
Currently I've been booting up with a Live CD in attempts to mount the encrypted partition then copy all the files to an external device I bought, but the mounting process has presented me with some problems. The partition in encrypted with ecryptfs and I have both the disk's passphrase as well as an FNEK signature to work with. Attempting the following:
Code:
Another small issue is the cipher I used. I don't remember which kind of encryption the disk is encrypted with (80% sure it's aes though). I assume figuring out which cipher I used will be more like a guessing game through the ecryptfs mount prompt, but I'm wondering if this would affect the error message I get.

I am trying to access files on a laptop (running Windows 7) from an Ubuntu desktop running 9.10. I can view the Windows 7 files just fine. Listing their permissions from an Ubuntu terminal shows them to be read/write by everyone. But, I am unable to update any of the files from Ubuntu.
I mount the files using the command:
mount -t cifs //richard-pc/C -o username=***,password=***,dir_mode=0777,fi
le_mod=0777 /mnt/windows7c
The permissions on the Windows 7 files on the laptop are set to Full Control by Everyone.

My Email Address is spamming
1. I received an email (spam) on Yahoo Mail from someone who was not intending to send it. (While it did go to spam folder, I did 'open' the email (since it came from a trusted sender) but it only contained a link (which because of WOT) I assumed was spam.) I did NOT click the link.
2. I then informed him that his email addy was spamming.
3 Shortly thereafter, i noticed in Ubuntu (firefox) whenever I clicked "reply" to email back to someone, there was a quick flash of letters/numbers in the slot where I would normally write. This instantly disappears and goes blank so I can write something, so I just figured it was a bug. This is happening on BOTH windows and Ubuntu.
4 Now MY EMAIL is spamming people the people I write to.
So far: I have 1. Changed my Yahoo password 2. Deleted firefox 3. In windows Ran Spybot/Search-Destory AVG (turns up nothing) What else can I do?

To avoid having to input a password for the keyring each time I connect to the net via wireless, I enabled the 'Available to all users' option in Network Manager. Now, my question is this. Are the 'users' it refers to just those created on this machine? Would a drive-by be able to use my network without entering the password?

As it stands I have a small home network operating behind my modem/router. Some of the ports on this are forwarded to my PS3 for gaming but I was looking at forward some for my file server.
At the moment I've forwarded port xxx22 to port 22 on my server for SSH for instance. ANd similarly 21 for FTP (although it doesnt seem to want to connect for any more than a few seconds using that). What I was thinking of doing was placing a small website for a handful of ppl to use on the server too and port forward again - xxx80 to 80. It works just fine but I'm a little concerned on the security front.
As I've moved the port to something different from the outside world I'm presuming I will have already cut the potential for malicious folks to wander in but is there anything else I should be doing? At the moment there's no firewall operating on the server, usually as its hidden behind the modem/router. But if I open this thign up more permanently what should I be doing? I've read a few articles on it but I'm always left with the overwhelming thought of "Thats if theres no firewall in my router" as they just seem to do the same.

The default Firewall ufw is not enabled by default at the time of installation and it has to be enabled by the user.Isn't this a security risk or is the user whether ufw is enabled or not secured from external threats?I am not much knowledgeable about network security But I am trying to understand the Ubuntu mentality behind this default setting.

Trying to set up network sharing between Ubuntu 9.10 and Vista. I already did this with a wired Ubuntu 9.10 desktop and my Vista laptop but for some reason my Ubuntu 9.10 wireless and Vista wireless aren't as easy. They are all on the same workgroup "MAGIC" and I can see my ubuntu shares on the Vista computer but can't see the Vista shares on the ubuntu computer. In ubuntu I go to network>windows network>MAGIC but it times out at the MAGIC workgroup part and says 'unable to mount'.
[URL]
but no luck I also checked and there isn't a firewall that's in the way.

I have a HP c4100 series printer connected to my Ubuntu computer. This computer prints just fine. I also have a Windows Vista computer that's connected to the Ubuntu HP via CUPS (by installing network printer with path of http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:631/printers/printername). This computer also prints just fine. My problem is I just got a new Windows 7 laptop, and connected it to the HP via CUPS the same way as the Vista machine. It installed fine. However the Win7 Laptop will not print. When I try to print, it acts like it is going to print, but never gives an error and the file never makes it into the printer queue (on either the win7 or ubuntu machines, i have tried printing with both queues open to see what happens).
Things I have already changed:
On the Ubuntu machine:Changed all the printer settings on printer to allow any and all connections including printing from the internet.
Edited the /etc/samba/smb.conf to allow CUPS printing and allow guest access
On the Win7 machine:Fixed my LAN security settings (disabled require 128bit encryption, send LM and NTLM responses)
Reinstalled printer several times. I have googled this issue almost every day for a month and tried every setting that I have came across (changed them back if it didn't help). So far nothing has worked for me, and this is my last ditch effort to get this printer working. Does anyone know why I can not print from my Windows 7 machine to a printer connected to my Ubuntu machine? Especially when I CAN print from the UBUNTU and Vista machines.

I'm using Slackware64 13.0 on a laptop. I've set up the network printer which lives on a Windows Vista machine (not my choice) in the family room. I am able to send print jobs to the printer. That part works fine, but the printer does not print. It simply stacks up print jobs with "error - printing" in the status of the first print job.I think I understand what's happening. I'm sending the print jobs to the print server as "Guest" and I have no guest account activated on the vista machine. I'm sitting here racking my brain (ie googling my goddamn fingers into stumps) trying to figure out how to send the jobs to the print server as indubitableness.
For the goddamn life of me I can't figure out what I need to do to send these print jobs as a specific user. I've tried adding "valid users = indubitableness" to smb.conf and I've tried using the -U flag when running lpadmin to add the printer to my system in the first place. The configuration wizard for windows doesn't appear to have any options to enable guest access or to add a specific remote location and/or user to the allow list.I'm at a loss and I'm losing my goddamn mind.

I just installed FEDORA 14 on my PC which already had Vista. I am able to dual boot through the GRUB boot loader. I am facing an issue where wired network in FEDORA stops working if I hibernate Vista. I really would like to be able to hibernate both to quicken the startup times.
Here are the steps:
1. Boot to Fedora (everything works fine including wired network)
2. Hibernate Fedora
3. Boot to Vista (everything works fine including networking)
4. Hibernate Vista
5. Boot to Fedora. It loads up fine, but wired network status icon keeps spinning and then results in a kernel package crash. I already reported the crash to Fedora.
6. Hibernate Fedora and boot to Vista (Vista resumes fine from hibernation and everything works in Vista including networking).
Is Fedora supposed to work when both Fedora and Vista are hibernated in a dual boot PC?If I shut down Vista, and then resume Fedora, networking works fine. So there is something in Vista hibernation that causes Fedora networking to fail. This issue remains even if Fedora is restarted (not hibernate/resume).

I have a single hard-drive on a spare computer and I decided to try out Ubuntu on recommendation from a friend. I really like it now but at first I just dual-booted it, and now I want Vista gone. I know it's unnecessary to have just one OS but my hard-drive isn't particularly big and I'd prefer to have Ubuntu by itself. Can anyone tell me how to eliminate vista and leave Ubuntu as my sole operating system (I've all my files from computer on another computer so I don't have to worry about losing anything).

I am trying to boot up Vista Home Premium from USB since my internal (bootable) CD-RW drive has failed and I cannot boot up Vista from CD.
I have Ubuntu running in the Windows partition and all my windows files are in there so I don't want to do a full installation of Ubuntu (yet).
I formatted an 8GB USB stick into two partitions
I then copied over to /dev/sdb1 all files from a Vista CD using an external CD-RW drive (which is not recognised as bootable on USB port).
In my Dell BIOS settings I changed the boot sequence to be bootable from USB disk first.
then I tried to reboot Vista installation in the USB stick.
But I get this message ..."this is not a bootable disk .. insert a bootable floppy"
So I could not boot up the Vista installation files.
When the boot flag is "on" in a GParted created partition does this make the partition DOS bootable for Vista installation?
My question is - What utility in Ubuntu 10.10 can create a DOS bootable partition on a USB stick? It seems that the MBR might have been overwritten when I installed Grub 2.0.
I can Grub dual boot between Windows and Ubuntu but I can't get very far with Windows .. stalls in safe mode.
So a Vista repair is called for. I would prefer not to reinstall Vista afresh at this stage.
There is a thread here explaining how to repair Vista bootloader
[url]
But it assumes that I am able to boot from CD-RW drive.
