Is it possible to use an SD Card or Flash Drive to log in?
I am using Debian 8.1 Jessie and XFCE.
Is this secure? Any sense on doing this?
I expect to use an SD Card or Flash Drive as a key to unlock the screen or log into my account.

Could I apply it to an SD Card as well?
I recently updated to OpenSUSE 11.3 and now when i plug in my flash drive or my sd card nothing happens. When I was on 11.0 I just plugged in my flash drive and it would show up on my desktop, now I got nothin'. The sd would open up in f-spot but not anymore. I'm not too smart so I'm pretty sure it's something simple that the all powerful geniuses in the linux community can fix. I am running in gnome on an emachines w3609 with intel devices.

I am trying to install ubuntu 9.10 on my netbook (I hear it runs better than remix) but an running into a wall. I am already using Jolicloud as my main os on my main partition. I have used Unetbootin to get the 9.10 iso on my re-movable media. I have gone into the bios and chose to have it look at the re-movable first, then my 1st partition on the HD. For some reason it never looks at the USB drive. I have disabled everything on boot except for the media and i get a screen that says "insert bootable media or restart" then i have to go back into bios and enable the HD again.
Side note, the media I am using might not be in fat 32 because I haven't figured out how to format in linux but, I have formatted in windows so that it is fat 32 and got the same problem.
I am wanting to replace the hard drive on my laptop with a Compact Flash Card. I bought a card and a adapter, but I am seeing that there are a lot of downsides to this (e.g. the card is slower, writes should be conserved because of limited write cycles, etc..) plus, in order to change the hard drive in my laptop (ibook g3 clamshell) you literally have to disassemble the entire thing! I mainly wanted to do this project to increase my battery life. However, some people say that it doesn't make much of a difference, while others say it is wonderful. So, to those that have done this mod, how much of a difference did it make for you?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a system with Voyage-Linux (Debian based) as my OS running on a compact flash card. Some files appear to be corrupt on it. Whenever I do a ls,cp,mv,rm command on these files I get the message Stale NFS file handle. I actually had the problem on 2 identical systems. I fixed the first one by attaching the CF card to another linux system and then running e2fsck -f -v /dev/sdb1. It got rid of the bad file.
My problem is I won't be able to do that all the time. I'm gonna have several of these systems in different places and won't have direct access to them, therefore I'm looking for a solution that would work on the system itself. Now running e2fsck on a mounted filesystem seems to be a bad idea from what I read, but I tried anyway and it did not get rid of the file. I tried running tune2fs -c 1 /dev/hda1 and rebooting, which is supposed to run e2fsck after the next boot (not 100% sure here) but that didn't seem to work.
i always had problem with my ATI card and Gnome GUI i decided to install Debian without any GUI at all. After login in CLI i used those commands:"apt-get update""apt-get install alsa-base xorg kdm kde gtl-qt-engine" .I decided to manually install KDE because i had no problem with it in Open SUSE. After that I restarted my pc and got flickering login screen, I'm unable to swith to console becasue after hitting ctrl-alt-F1 I'm getting black screen. I searched google but with no luck, and if there was some solution it required you to be logged in into GUI.

I remember being able to format a 3.5 inch floppy using MS DOS. The command was format a:/s
("a" was the drive letter and the "/s" was to add the bootable system file.)
HOW can I do that in LINUX, specially Debian 6.01 (my current version) I googled it and found a bunch of sites all offering answers.
NONE worked for me, I saw an option in a Slackware installation with a "make bootable USB stick option".
(It can be used as a rescue USB Stick also) We don't have that in Debian. How can I do that with my current Debian install?
I have several Debian USB installs on flash drives, They work great and give the user an opportunity to run and experience Debian with modifying their set-up. I am trying to set-up one that will NOT only boot and work as a live install, but will also allow me to install on the host machine right from the working USB Flash drive, if I choose to do so.
I want to move my "currently installed Debian and its all settings" to a USB flash drive. I am wondering what methods are available out there. I looked into Remastersys but it failed on my system so I am wondering if there is another method available?

I am using UNetBootin to extract this (debian-live-6.0.1-i386-gnome-desktop.iso) file to a FAT32 partition on my flash drive. It installs fine, and shows me the SysLinux menu fine, but when i choose live(or anything else) it says"Invalid or Corrupt Kernel Image". I also tryed these other installers. pendrivelinux's Universal USB Installer. It gives me the same message. win32diskimager gives me a different Debian menu, but the same problem. Does anyone know what is wrong, and how to fix it. It is driving me nuts!

whenever i plug in my flash drive i get an error message saying that it was unable to mount the thumb drive and some other stuff

The other day, I installed Debian 6 XFCE on my old pc. It was using a lot of my poor little amd k6-2's ability. I couldnt run any programs without it lagging. So today I reinstalled debian 6, this time with the LXDE desktop. The processor situation is fixed and my ancient HP is quick with its old cpu.
Although I love LXDE, there is a problem, when I plug in my flash drive it wont recognize its there. (The XFCE desktop did) I have tried rebooting and all 2 of the usb slots, lol (1.1), and it wont recognize them.
I have tried formatting them in FAT and FAT32, is there a certain format that it needs? Is this a common problem?
Oh, and my mouse is USB and it works just fine.
I created a bootable Debian installer on my USB flash drive. The Debian Installation Guide advises;

I want to put non free firmware packages on the stick but when I try to create a FAT partition in the free space using Disk Utility I get the following error;

I formatted the drive to clear it, created a new FAT partition and copied the Debian.iso to it again. When I tried again to create a partition in the free space the same error occurred.
So I made a text file on a windows machine and brought it home on a flashdrive. When I opened it in PCMan File manager it did not show, but executing ls in a terminal shows the text file just fine. It is the only one that appears to be missing in PCManfm. I've had a similar problem going the other direction (Linux to Windows, but with pdfs) many months ago. here is ls -l

The file is Translation.txt. What is different about this file that it would do such a thing? It doesn't look at all different from above.
I want to run Debian as a live version from my USB flash drive. Does this provide the same amount of security from hackers as installing Debian as the only OS on my netbook. Windows ce would still be on my netbook?

I had debian 8.2 and windows 8.1 running on a single SSD. Everything was fine. I wanted to install a second debian on a 32gb USB flash drive as a live system. After the installation I am not able to boot my debian (SSD) without the flash drive plugged in. I only get a grub rescue prompt. Booting windows still works. It is also possible to boot both debian systems if the USB drive is plugged in.
So it seems to me, that the debian bootloader was accidently installed to the USB flash drive and the original bootloader on the SSD does not work properly anymore. I used a netinst image from a second USB flash drive to install debian to the first USB flash drive.

I've installed Debian using the boot.img.gz file onto the jump drive, as well as Linux mint and crunchbang with unetbootin all to no avail; pressing F9 at bios startup refuses to show the jump drive. Booting from the drive is enabled (as far as I can see) in the BIOS.

However when looking everything I've found makes it sound like I need to install the card for it to work. I want to know if I can install Debian to the hard drive through the SATA card or not?
View 6 Replies View RelatedDue to the lack of a CD burner (at least one that works properly) I've been trying to install Debian on my laptop from a USB drive. I extracted the ISO contents onto my drive, made an entry in GRUB (on the flash drive - I'm booting from it) and can successfully begin the installation, but when it tries to mount the CD-ROM, obviously it can't, as there isn't one. I tried mounting the flash drive partition with the ISO contents to /cdrom manually, but I don't seem to be able to do so. I either get "No such device" or "Invalid argument". I CAN, however, mount the FAT32 partition of that flash drive (which oddly enough I cannot mount in Windows - go figure). The partition I need to mount is ext2. All of the partitions show up in /dev as well as /proc/filesystems.
Also, I'm using the netinstall to save space on my flash drive. ( http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/...86-netinst.iso )
Why can't I mount my ext2 partition?

View 3 Replies View RelatedBack in Febuary, my wife bought a Toshiba Satilite from Wal-Mart and a few days ago the hard drive got toasted. So now I'm using an 8gig usb drive as the boot drive. I also have 2 other flash drives for downloads and such but overall I am very pleased.
I'm running 11.04 32 bit and was wandering if 64 bit made a difference. I've got 4 gigs of ddr3. It's slow to boot, but once it's running, it's faster then Windows 7. Very nice.
Is there anything I should chage, use, since I'm running it off a flash drive??

I bought an 8GB flash drive because my D drive doesn't read DVDs. Anyway, my goal is to install Linux ubuntu and have it be my OS (replacing Windows XP). Last night I went to the Ubuntu homepage and downloaded the Ubuntu desktop edition 32-bit and put it on my flash drive. I followed the instructions on how to open and run it, but I was never asked about whether I want Linux to run side by side with Windows or if I want it to replace Windows. It downloaded the whole program, my computer restarted and then (on a black screen) it asked if I wanted to use Windows XP Home Edition or Linux Ubuntu. It's really frustrating because it took a while to download and install it in the first place AND to top that off, when I tried to use Ubuntu it went to a black screen and at the top said that there was an error. So I uninstalled all the ubuntu program and software and now I have a clean slate and want to try this again. I am a complete n00b. Could someone please walk me through how I can go about downloading (w/ links plz), installing and making ubuntu my ONLY OS on my computer via a flash drive? I'm desperate and I don't want to go through all of that and make the same mistake again!

Looking for a way to zero-out a flash card (any format CD/SD/MS) so that it starts completely clean? By that I mean not just formated but all zeros or a fixed pattern.It will be formated later and used to test photo recover software so it needs to start blank so that nothing is found by the software to start withPresently running OpenSUSE 11.2 64-bits, if that makes a difference.

I have a flash card that has been corrupted and have obtained a working .img file. I was told that I could not just drag and drop the .img to the card and that it needs to be written bit by bit to the new card. I am unfamiliar with the Linux terminal and would like to know what command or a how to get the .img file written to it. The .img file is now residing on the desktop.
