What should I do if I want to allow access to USB flash drive selectively - Say for e.g. All permissions for "root", "Read/Write" for user "A", Only "Read" for user "B" and user "C" shouldn't be able to access or mount (no permissions) the USB flash drive at all.Also I want to do it by modifying entries in some files or by some commands (so that it can be done programatically if needed)

I am setting up a new ubuntu server, and I am quite new to linux. This server will be used as code repository for a project I am going to be working on. I plan to setup 3 groups for users: dev, test, doc
- for various developers, testers and documentation users.
I would like to setup the following permissions on the main code repository directory:
dev - write permission
test - execute permission
doc - read permission
public (anyone outside these groups) - deny all access
I am unsure what chmod setting to use, or if this is even possible in ubuntu.
Is there a way to restrict users that are logged into the shell via SSH/Telnet/SFTP from using the 'cd' command to move into certain directories, yet not use the chmod command to do it? For instance, restrict users logged in from accessing the /var/www/ folder but have it still accessible using a web browser. Also, would this defeat the purpose since they could just wget from it if its still web accessible through a browser?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have a netbook running Ubuntu Netbook Edition and I would like a USB flash drive to be automatically mounted whenever I plug it in. The drive is FAT formatted. It mounts when I plug it in but all files are only writable by my user, other users only have read access. I understand that I need to add a corresponding entry to the /etc/fstab file. I've added the following so far:/dev/sdb1 /mnt/USB_DRIVE vfat
Firstly, is that appropriate so far? I've created /mnt/USB_DRIVE as root. Next, I'm not sure what options I should be finishing the line with, especially to get all users to be able to write to the drive.
Is anyone aware of a detailed "flow chart" -- arrows and decision diamonds, etc -- that describes the file access and permissions processing? I would love to see that diagram. Years ago on a platform far away (Digitial VAX/VMS) their manuals had such a flow chart that covered not only the user-group-owner and read-write-execute permissions decision making but also include "access control list" processing at a superficial level. If someone has access to the VAX/VMS flow chart, that might be a start toward sorting what linux does.

cp /home/user/Desktop/file /media/TITANIUM as root
If I log in as root I can drag files from pen drive to desktop and also from Desktop to pen drive. is there an easy way to give permissions for normal user. I had a look a groups and it has scanner, printer etc listed ,can I amend groups somehow to enable same permissions for pen drive access as root?
I am setting up a samba server to operate in a windows AD domain. I want to set permissions for multiple groups to have different levels of access to one group of files, and it looks to me like unix permissions will not do that? I always hear about how robust linux is, and it seems to me that their file permissions model is WEAK compared to microsoft's?

I'll be placing sensitive data on the drive & need to figure out how to encrypt it. From what i've read so far, the easiest way will be to encrypt the swap, /home, tmp, temp files. Not quite sure how to do this. I'd prefer to encrypt the whole drive, but this seems quite complicated.
A while back I had been using ubuntu on a live cd after my windows partition had been taken over by a virus, which at the time I thought had been removed by my anti virus (and then took out winlogon) and I did a system repair instead of a complete reformat because I didn't want to lose all of my files. After repairing, I noticed some things like what looked like fake "this page has been blocked based on your security preferences" on major sites like ....., myspace and facebook. I ran another virus scan with a different AV and strangely it detected a behavioural software keylogger, which after looking it up seemed to be something that could only be installed with physical access to the system, which confused me. Anyway, this is when I started to use the live CD to copy some of my music, videos, pictures etc. onto my flash drive. From what I can remember, I used this USB on my main computer without problems, but the last time I used it (few months ago) I ran a virus scan afterwards, just to feel safe and it came up with a couple java exploit trojans. This was probably just coincidence and I hadn't ran a scan in a day or two, possibly even a false positive as I noticed no decrease to system performance or any odd happenings.
So, my questions are: Is it even possible for a virus from a windows partition to copy itself to a USB flash drive on an ubuntu live cd; and is it possible (if the virus was even capable of this) if I insert the flash drive into my ubuntu computer, it could do anything like transfer across my WLAN to my windows computer, or even copy its files onto ubuntu but be unable to do anything? Which brings me to another question: if I visit a website that may contain drive-by malware or a virus of any type, is it capable of acting at all, such as even trying to transfer itself into my home folder, or does it not even recognize ubuntu at all and do nothing?
Is there a program like BlueProximity but works with a file on a flash drive which will lock up the computer if it does not detect a file on a flash drive. What I am wanting to do is make certain features inaccessible if the flash drive is removed so if anyone uses my computer they can't hurt anything.

It showed up once in the Computer - File Browser and I was able to mount it and access the files on it, but since then it doesn't show up. It works fine on my Ubuntu 9.10 distro. I have two questions regarding auto mount function of Truecrypt. First question:
I want to automatically mount my flash drive encrypted by Truecrypt using a keyfile whenever I plug the drive. How can I do this? I use Ubuntu 10.10.
Second question:
As I do not know the answer of my first question, I currently use following command in a startup script to mount my encrypted flash drive automatically at every system start-up.

My problem with this method is, Truecrypt always search for the drive in the same path saved in favorite drives list, e.g. /dev/sdb1. However sometimes there are more than one flash drive plugged to my computer and my encrypted drive's path changes. In such cases Truecrypt cannot mount my encrypted drive because it cannot find the drive in its path.
As a workaround I tried "auto-mount=devices" parameter. It is slow because it checks every mounted drive, and some of them external hard disk big in size. Moreover it does not recognize any mount point parameter. I'd like to mount the drive to the same mount point every time.

What I want to do is pull data from any of the hard drives attached to my Linux box from my Windows machine. I have been moving small amounts of data from the drives to my OS drive and those parts share easily, but I want to move away from that method to move large amounts of data at the same time.I have tried using Samba as it is used for file sharing between systems and that I have to give my Windows box permission through Samba.
Trick is, I'm not sure where to start, though I have an idea and wanted to know if this is the right track before I start editing my file system.
When I replace a drive in a RAID 1 and then resync it, why does the file access date (all the files) on the drive from which I am syncing not change? Shouldn't the file access date always change when I copy a file? Are there ways to overgo this?

I get "permission denied." I encrypted my whole home directory and know the password, but how do I "decrypt" it or login as the partition's root so I can access the documents that way. I'm booted into the USB, but can't access the home directory. I get "You do not have the permissions necessary to view the contents of 'jake'".

View 3 Replies View RelatedBack in Febuary, my wife bought a Toshiba Satilite from Wal-Mart and a few days ago the hard drive got toasted. So now I'm using an 8gig usb drive as the boot drive. I also have 2 other flash drives for downloads and such but overall I am very pleased.
I'm running 11.04 32 bit and was wandering if 64 bit made a difference. I've got 4 gigs of ddr3. It's slow to boot, but once it's running, it's faster then Windows 7. Very nice.

I just installed Ubuntu workstation into VMware and then installed Apache, Mysql, PHP, and phpmyadmin.I am able to access Apache from any computer in my home so there is not issue there.The issue I am facing is when I try to copy anything into /var/www/ I get a permission denied messsage.I added myself to the administrators group and then rebooted but still get the same message.
I was able to access it by using the following command...gksu nautilus.I don't want to have to do that every time. I would like to be able to access it by just opening "Documents" and the selecting "file system" inside of Nautilus.
I bought an 8GB flash drive because my D drive doesn't read DVDs. Anyway, my goal is to install Linux ubuntu and have it be my OS (replacing Windows XP). Last night I went to the Ubuntu homepage and downloaded the Ubuntu desktop edition 32-bit and put it on my flash drive. I followed the instructions on how to open and run it, but I was never asked about whether I want Linux to run side by side with Windows or if I want it to replace Windows. It downloaded the whole program, my computer restarted and then (on a black screen) it asked if I wanted to use Windows XP Home Edition or Linux Ubuntu. It's really frustrating because it took a while to download and install it in the first place AND to top that off, when I tried to use Ubuntu it went to a black screen and at the top said that there was an error. So I uninstalled all the ubuntu program and software and now I have a clean slate and want to try this again. I am a complete n00b. Could someone please walk me through how I can go about downloading (w/ links plz), installing and making ubuntu my ONLY OS on my computer via a flash drive? I'm desperate and I don't want to go through all of that and make the same mistake again!

However, when I insert it into the USB slot, the light on the drive glows, but I'm unable to mount the drive, neither does ubuntu detect it.I disconnected the flash drive, and then run `dmesg | tail`. had trouble writing to a flash drive. checked the permissions, the correct user it there, but the id is root.when logged in as root and attempt to change permissions i get Could not modify the ownership of file /media/disk-3. You have insufficient access to the file to perform the change.
now how as root can not have enough permission? i've been up and down the forums and google to no avail. poked around in the fstab and even mtab as there are two files, one a lock, that seems to come from mtab.
I am not putting lnux on my mac, so I don't think it goes in the Apple section and Security is the closest I could find regarding file permissions, so excuse me if I am in the wrong area for this question. I need to back up my macbook (OSX) data. I do not have another mac nor do my friendsw.. I do have a PC running ubuntu 9 though. So I hook it up and can see it, but all the document are locked and I dont have permissions.... now with windows I know how to take over permissions, I have looked online and the closest I found is using the temporary root user command to view all locked files but that gets me to about 25% my data.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have upgraded to Lucid, but was having the same issues on Karmic. I made a 2nd user acct we'll call X and we'll call the original acct Y. All of these issues only happened after creating X.
On X I have: sound Things wrong with X: I don't have the ability to modify any folders (even ones that are made from X's acct), I can't change the password or even access the Users and Groups, I can't modify any browser settings in Firefox but can on Chromium, the option for wireless is completely gone
On Y I have: the ability to access users and groups, the ability to modify all folders on either acct, the ability to change any settings on anything Things wrong with Y: no sound (doesn't even show the driver, but the driver is there on X's acct), wireless is completely gone (just like X's acct), even though I can access Users and Groups I cannot modify anything about X's acct
My first thought was to completely delete X since that's when all the problems began, but I'm afraid that since X seems to have "stolen" my sound card, that will be lost forever. I am also afraid that since neither account has wireless deleting X might hinder ever getting it back.
