Ubuntu Security :: Keyring Login Prompts Multiple Times

Nov 9, 2010

It's been awhile since I've been on here. I suppose that can be considered a good thing, since I made the completely transfer to Ubuntu three months ago and everything's been running completely smoothly. Anyway, security is a pretty big thing to me. I usually change the root password, take sudo off (and default gksu, not gksudo), encrypt my hard drives, etc... One thing I also do is create a separate password for my login keyring. I don't mind having to enter one extra password at login, but it started prompting two times, and now three. It's the same password every time, so my question is..

Ubuntu Security :: Possible To Limit Number Of Prompts For Keyring Password?

Jan 18, 2010

I have a standard home set-up for my Ubuntu OS, and I would like to know whether its possible to cut out the repetitive prompts to enter the password, as when you connect to the internet or access files on a partition that's not home, or install new software.

Ubuntu :: Keyring Requests Password 3 Times On Login Since Upgrade

Nov 14, 2010

When I boot up my password is requested three separate times by the keyring. Sometimes if I have left my computer to boot up it will actually be requested four times. I get the impression it relates to start up programs, for example if I leave it so that it requests the password a fourth time, at the same time the wifi connection settings pop up requesting the wifi password. I remember having a similar problem before and I think I was able to set a program as always having access to the keyring once logged in, but I can't remember or find how to do this. The programs that are maximized on startup are; transmission, liferea. Docky and gnome-do are also arranged to load on startup.

Ubuntu Security :: Keyring Doesn't Unlock At Login?

I have a problem where I am asked to unlock the keyring every time I use Evolution.I enter my password on the user select screen and login and have evolution save my email password but whenever I open the program it asks for the same password as I use to login. For security reasons I need to have my password requested at login but don't feel I need it for evolution as I thought my email password was enough.

General :: Boot Up: "Login Keyring Failed Your Login Keyring Did Not Succeed"

Aug 4, 2010

I'm asking this in the right place. I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and recently started getting a pop-up similar to the following at every boot up: Login keyring failed Your login keyring did not succeed. Enter login keyring here: That's not [exactly] what it says, but very similar. I should probably add that I have not set up any different 'user profiles' or whatever they're called, but am the only one using this PC...at least, at the present time. Again, this only started a couple of weeks ago and I don't know what I did to start it nor what to do to stop it. I guess it's not extremely painful to have to type my password in every time, but a PITA nevertheless.

Ubuntu Security :: Block Multiple Ssh Login Attempts?

Mar 22, 2011

I am running a ubuntu server 10.10 with SSH, and OpenVPN. I use it mainly for the VPN, but I have seen log in attempts such as:

Mar 22 14:52:53 UbuntuSvr sshd[2397]: Invalid user support from 85.217.190.69
Mar 22 14:52:55 UbuntuSvr sshd[2399]: Invalid user student from 85.217.190.69

Mar 22 14:52:59 UbuntuSvr sshd[2403]: Invalid user user from 85.217.190.69

[Code]...

Is it possible to make it so when some one has tried logging in 5 times with an invalid user/pass that the ip is banned for 10 minutes? I have password auth set to no and am using keys.

Ubuntu Installation :: Unplanned Visits To Login Window - Taken To Login Screen Three Times

Aug 18, 2010

I have used Ubuntu since 7-4; I now have 10.4. However, in the last week I have been taken to the login screen three times. This could be potentially calamitous. Ctrl+Alt +Backspace have by default been disable since 9-4. There is no way I am pressing atl+Prtscr +K. I wonder if there is a new zap command in 10.4, and if so, how to disable it. I have never found the need to go back back to the login window. I am generally using the command line when doing this.

Ubuntu Security :: SSH To Server Using GSSAPI/Kerberos Prompts For Password When Using DNS Alias?

Jan 15, 2010

I have a Kerberos/LDAP/OpenAFS server running on Debian lenny, set up according to Davor Ocelic's excellent guide here (url). SSHd has ben configured to use GSSAPI auth and the clients have been configured to pass auth tokens through to the server.

My clients are all Ubuntu 9.10 x86 fully patched. On the clients, OpenAFS has been compiled and installed as a kernel module and git 1.6.6 has been compiled from source and installed. Otherwise, all software is stock Ubuntu repository-ware.

The setup is working fine as long as I connect to the primary server using its hostname:

peter@client01:~$ ssh nana
<connection goes through seamlessly without prompting>
peter@nana:~$

If I try to connect via a DNS alias (actually a second CNAME record), I get:

peter@client01:~$ ssh git1
peter@git1's password:
<connection completes>
peter@nana:~$

I need both passwordless auth and the DNS alias working, as it's internal policy that user connections are only ever made to service names, not real hostnames.

I have tried adding a second host principal to Kerberos for the alias (git1.darling.local) in addition to the host principal for the hostname (nana.darling.local).

If I turn off PasswordAuthentication in sshd_config, then "ssh git1" doesn't even fall through to passwords; it just denies logins. So it looks like it's not even using GSSAPI for the DNS alias.

So:

1) Is what I want even possible? I can't find anything that indicates that there's anything odd about DNS aliases such that this should happen.

2) Which config files should I post to help debug this? There's a lot and I didn't want to start blarfing them here if they aren't helpful.

Ubuntu :: Multiple Keyring Password Entries?

Although all the passwords are under one Keyring folder, I have to type in the password 4 times. Is this the way the keyring is supposed to work? If so, can I help change this somehow(I'm not a programmer, unfortunately)? It seems that a lot of people have this problem and getting it to work out-of-the-box could bring in more potential users. (Also, different topic, is there anyway to make Dropbox wait until I enter keyring passwords to try to connect or wait until a connection is made to try to connect?

Ubuntu :: Multiple Times To Report A Bug, But Can't?

Sep 2, 2010

I have tried multiple times to report a bug, but can't. All I can find is this USELESS guide: [URL]Is this seriously the ONLY way to report a bug? I can't just fill out a form somewhere without running software to do it? When I try to do it the way explained in the guide, it tells me that I'm using a stable version of Xubuntu, and that only people running dev versions (like 11.10) can report bugs. Are they saying that all stable releases are perfect in every way? Surely one must be able to report a bug for them...?

Ubuntu Networking :: Multiple Keyring Logon Dialogues

Jan 21, 2011

I would happily do without having to logon to my wireless connection but, apparently, one can either have automatic logon at boot or automatic logon to the network - but not both.Anyway, of late my Ubuntu box has begun to request my network keyring password 2, 3 or 5 times (never 4, though). This was a real nuisance until I discovered that I can respond with my password on the first occasion and simply 'cancel' the subsequent requests. This is not critical but I would love to rid myself of the subsequent dialogue prompts.

Ubuntu :: 10.04 Freezes Or Crashes Multiple Times?

Oct 12, 2010

[Staff Note: This thread was spun off from here: HOWTO: Purge and Reinstall Grub 2 from the Live CD This solved the Grub problem but the crashes continue.]

Just as I get up and running again my 10.04 (64 bit) either freezes up totally, closes all windows that are open, fails to restart or shut down forcing a restart.

There's no pattern to it, i might be using the gimp or checking thunderbird emails, possibly just surfing or running bluefish. Nothing major and I'm not one to go delving under the bonnet so to speak and start tweaking things. I have the AWN dock installed and run a dual monitor setup.

Everytime it's crashed, the damn thing doesn't reboot, I get the init =bootarg message I've been reading a lot about and once again I have to run the liveCD and spend several minutes farting about purging and reinstalling grub.

I despise Windows, overall I am enjoying my ubuntu experience but things like this stop me getting any work done.

My PC ran fine for the last 2 days then suddenly it's playing up again. It's not an old machine, quad core processor, plenty of RAM.

I am having to back stuff up as soon as I do it due to so many crashes per day. I have reinstalled the OS and started again from scratch 4 times now in the last month.

The last thing I want to do is go back to Windoze but I am seriously running out of patience with ubuntu.

Ubuntu :: Login To Xfce The Screen Goes Black - Flickers A Few Times Then It Brings Back To The Login Screen

Apr 12, 2011

My last setup (years ago) ran fluxbox so because it was familiar I installed it as a secondary to xfce right off the bat. I download a lot of different stuff because I like to try out all the apps I can find but somewhere I broke something. I can still run fluxbox fine, but nither the Xubuntu nor Xfce sessions will run now. Last thing I remember changing was pulse audio(removed it for an experiment I was trying with jack audio), not sure if it is connected but when I try to login to xfce the screen goes black, flickers a few times then it brings me back to the login screen.

I tried failsafe but everytime I do my monitor gives me a "frequency out of range" error. I tried purging and reinstalling xubuntu desktop and xfce settings but I am thinking its my xorg config. My laptop is a Toshiba satellite M305D-s4830 with ATI Radeon 3100 mobile graphics card and I am running Xubuntu 10.10. Unfortunately I also broke the screen, so right now I am stuck with an external monitor till I get a new one.

Ubuntu Networking :: NFS Mount Shows Multiple Times In The Places?

Mar 23, 2011

I have the follwoing fenomenan. In my /etc/fstab I have an entry to automatically mount my NAS. Here is my entry:

192.168.1.10:/mnt/array1/My_NAS /media/My40NAS nfs _netdev,
auto,rw,hard,users,intr 0 0

When my laptop boots it successfully mounts the NFS NAS and I get an icon "My NAS" on my dekstop that points to the NAS. If I double click on the icon it opens my file browser and I can browse thru my NAS fodlers.

What I see on the left hand side of the file browser is that I have to entries for My NAS. One of it has a button to shows that it is mounted and the other does not.

If I go to Places I also see 2 entries for "My NAS". One of it takes me to browsing the NAS and if I click on the other it says "Unable to mount ... busy or already mounted". Which makes sense.

OpenSUSE :: Konqueror Started Again And Again - Multiple Times ?

Mar 14, 2010

I have a strange effect here, where konqueror is started multiple times. It is no problem to start it from the K-Menu. But konqueror seems to be associated with different actions in applications, e.g. many "help" entries; among others e.g. Inkscape: "Hilfe/Inkscape Handbuch" (~ Help/Inkscape handbook") If I'm unfortunate enough to hit such an item, the konqueror items start flooding my task bar, while the mouse cursor - changed to the konqueror icon - is flickering like wild, while konqueror is starting again and again. None of the windows really open and all icons disappear after some time. (due to some resource overflow, but unfortunately I can't find the relevant log entry this time) How can I prevent this ? Its hard to pin-point when it happened as all I know is that I restarted and was no longer prompted for any kind of password. I have been searching google for a few hours and have only found ways to make this happen on purpose, but not necessarily anything to reverse it. If somebody has any idea what has happened here This is really frustrating. I liked loging in with the keyring as opposed to the login screen and I would like things to go back that way.

Ubuntu :: Netbook Boots Into Setup Multiple Times Before Boot Or Freezes

Jun 4, 2011

I actually have it installed on two of my computers. One is an older Acer Aspire 3100 that dual-boots windows 7 and Ubuntu 11.04, and an Acer Aspire ONE that has Ubuntu 11.04 as main OS. Before Ubuntu, (even currently) I'm a MAC user, and i'm really liking Ubuntu. On my 3100 it works just fine except the screen flicker on wake, but a quick reboot will solve that.

On my Aspire ONE i've had to re-install ubuntu multiple times. (we're talking 5 or 6 in the last month) Sometimes, it'll boot up to absolutely nothing. One time I got a weird error message everytime it booted. The last install froze up a lot, and eventually would only start to boot into setup. I reinstalled Ubuntu, again and it worked until I shut it off. Boot back up, same thing. Threw me right into setup. I was able to get around it after 5 or so tries of rebooting, hitting ALT F11 and somehow got into ubuntu recovery, but loaded normally. I'm using it now and it's working great currently.

Specs on the ONE

1.5GB Ram
8GB SSD (could this be the culprit?)
ATOM (1.8 or 1.6) GHz Processor.

Halfway through this fiasco, I put windows XP on it and used it solid for 3 days without any of the mentioned above issues.
