Ubuntu Security :: Access Partition From Another Machine?

I have installed an Ubuntu server and it running OK. Before making it a production server, I want to make sure one day if the OS corrupts accidentally, I can still access the users' files on the hard disk.
I burned a Ubuntu desktop live CD, and booted it with this machine. There are 2 hard disks on the server, both could be mounted automatically. However, I can only access some folders like lost+found.
The questions are:
1. how can I access the other folders, given I have the root password of the server.
2. is there a way to access all folders without knowing the users + passwords?

I have two desktop machines, each with U 10.10. I want to backup data on my main machine to a partition on the other machine. I am going to use luckybackup for that. Problem is, from the main machine, I cannot access the backup partition on the other machine (but I can see it). I get prompts for passwords and when I enter them nothing happens, it seems they're not valid. Bottom line, I can't access that partition.

I have a dual boot machine and recently did a fresh install of 10.4. It no longer asks for a password to access the Windows partition and I full access to it. This seems insecure to me and was wondering if someone else came across this. I thought I saw this topic discussed before but I can not seem to find it now. Is this a bug or a new unpleasant feature?I don't think it makes a difference but I do have a separate encrypted home partition on this fresh install. I have also done two fresh installs. (Well three...once testing out KDE but didn't try the Win partition. )

Is it possible to remotely access, inject, manipulate files and/or folders in the Windows NTFS partition when logged into Ubuntu?
I'm either logged into Windows or Ubuntu but NOT both -- ever. Therefore, while logged into Ubuntu, would it be possible for someone to crack into Windows via Ubuntu using Wi-Fi or modem?

I try to access my ubuntu machine via my Windows Machine (Samba Server on Ubuntu Machine). Anytime I try to access the machine it asks me for my password...I enter it but it says it is invalid....is there anyway to reset it? I have already tried to remove and purge everything Samba related and then tried reinstalling, but that still didn't do anything

Right now I just installed open ssh because i was told its a great thing to have for remote controlling my machine if I am at work on my windows system. My question is, how on earth do I acess my machine from my windows machine now that its installed? i did sudo apt-get ssh and thats about all so far...

I need to access a Windows Server 2000 machine using a Linux machine via KDE, but that will migrate to Gnome. The Linux user to connect to Windows machine, you should open an application 'XYZ' automatically, and only this, denying any unauthorized access. When you close the application 'XYZ' communications (RDP?) Should be terminated. Do I need a log of accesses and possible attempts to circumvent the system and access other application.

I've run into a weird problem. Two of my linux machines (A and B, both running CentOS 5.5) are connected to the same wall ethernet socket via a hub. Bothf them are configured for static IPs. The trouble is that when machine B goes offline or hits a kernel panic, machine 1 goes offline too. What I've noticed is that in this condition the "route" output from machine A does not show any entry for the default gateway either The contents of /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 for machine A are:

During a recent install I made the leap to encryption,but /boot must remain unencrypted.Is there really any legitimate security risk to having an unencrypted /boot partition? I mean basically someone can just see what kernel you're running which they could see during boot anyways right? Oh I and keep all my financial documents in /boot/finances/ (haha ok not really, but I am serious about the first part).

I've recently just installed ubuntu 11.04 but seem to have made a big mistake. During the install process I was asked to specify a location to be used for swap. Not really understanding what this meant I chose another partition on my drive with some free space but also a lot of my data. Needless to say I now cant see that partition. Is there anyway for me to access it? or to at least recover the information I need from there? its about a 200gig partition, and it used to be ntfs.

I am trying to install a box here where my /storage partition is about 2.5T.I had setup the partitioning with suse, while testing, and all worked well.Now when trying to install CentOs 5.5 it gives me an error, that my boot partition is on a gpt partition and this machine cannot boot that.Also I don't see the option to create XFS partitions from the installer.Can 5.5 support GPT @ install time?

I have this little nettop box, an Acer Revo, that I use for Boxee/Hulu Desktop with my tv. It's been a fairly enjoyable setup for months, until two mornings ago. The first strike Before work I poured myself some cereal, wandered over to the couch, plopped down and powered on the tv. After the set warmed up, a header image for some banking/something-another website made it from my screen, into my retinas, and slowly turned my otherwise uneventful morning into me chocking on a mouth full of Honey Nut Os as I lept over my coffee table and slammed the off button on my cable modem.
I clean up the Nut Os that I knocked on the floor and systematically change every password on my networked machines (Revo and two *laptops*). I check my router, disable my ssh port forwarding rule, kill remote admin access, change passwords, MAC addr whitelist my wifi connected machines just in case it's a local job. I read through all running processes, check my bash history, look for screen sessions, and so on. Finally I decide that I must have been brute forced, either on my ssh port or perhaps even directly on my router. My laptops should have been, and seemed to still be, in sleep mode since that night.
The second strike So tonight I'm watching a South Park episode (a show I hate to love), about to cut out for the night, when the Boxee menu pops up. I look at the remote and back at the tv; for just a moment I think that perhaps the mouse shifted slightly on the carpet and caused the menu to activate. Then Boxee stops the video, navigates the menu a few clicks, pulls up the exit menu and closes itself. ......

I've done a lot of searching on this but haven't found a concise solution to my issue. Maybe there isn't one. A little history first: I installed using WUBI. I had already shrunk my Windows partition (using Windows disk management) and created a partition for Ubuntu and for swap space. I thought WUBI would give me a chance to choose the partition for installing but I was mistaken (I should mention I'm a bit of a n00b).
Anyway, after running Ubuntu for a while from the WUBI install I did an Ubuntu update and GRUB got corrupted. I had to use my Windows XP disk to repair my MBR. No big deal. But at this point I decided it was time to do a REAL Ubuntu install on the partition I'd created for it.
Now we get to the part where I have issues. I think I need to create a boot partition for GRUB somewhere in the very early part of the drive. This is because my machine is old and has the BIOS issue where the boot sector must be in the first 1024 cylinders of the drive. Of course, Microsoft has taken that space and I don't know how to insert a new partition without hosing my Windows install. I also have a large data partition that I don't want to lose. It's SDA5 in the list below. I think there's also an issue with the number of partitions I have. I think I can only add logical partitions.

I have two laptops with me here at school, one bigger one [home computer], and one smaller one [netbook]. I take the smaller one with me to class and when I'm out and about, however, I keep all of my things on the bigger one. I would really like to be able to set up some sort of SSH port forwarding for the bigger machine so that, when I'm out and I realize I left file X on my home machine, or I want to listen to a certain song, or whatever, I can just scp it to the netbook. The issue is, at my dorm, I'm stuck behind a firewall and can't just set up a SSH daemon and port forward through the router, I need a more clever solution. I do have a home server (not with me at school), which I commonly use for transferring files. Basically, I'm wondering if there is some way I can SSH into my server box, with reverse port forwarding so that, when I am out and about, I can just log into my server and copy files from my home computer for use on my netbook. I've tried a couple of solutions which come up from google "reverse ssh" but haven't been able to get them to work. A step by step guide to doing this would be great. Again, the setup is:
Home server [ssh-able]
Home Computer [behind firewall, can't ssh into at the moment]
Netbook []
Want to be able to SSH from Netbook to Home computer, probably using Home server.

Just installed Ubuntu the newest release on my laptop . Im dual booting on my laptop. Vista or Ubuntu. I gotta say I love Ubuntu more than vista. I would much rather use ubuntu. My question is I cannot for the life of me connect to my main PC running Windows 7. Reason I want to do this is my PC running windows 7 has all my music which is rather large over 100gigs worth. Looks like it recognizes my PC but I cannot access anything.
Now In windows 7 I have disabled password and made it pretty easy to access files on there. When I boot into vista on my laptop no problem at all getting onto the network to access my main Windows 7 Pc. Any Ideas why Ubuntu can't get into my Windows 7 pc Through my network. Would love to do this that way I don't ever have to boot into vista. Ubuntu is great otherwise.

i'm trying to install drivers for an nvidia card.
i was unable to stop X after trying the following:
sudo /etc/init.d/kdm stop
sudo service kdm stop
sudo stop kdm
i had ssh'ed in, so there was no point in trying ctrl-alt-f1.there was no /etc/inittab file, so i poked around, and found out that i could simply create one, and enter the following into it:
id:3:initdefault:
which would start the machine in runlevel three (to avoid starting X).that didn't work, since (k)ubuntu apparently ignores the differences between runlevels 2-5.
so i entered the following into my newly created /etc/inittab:
id:1:initdefault:
and restarted the machine.there was no screen output, and i could not ssh into the machine.i took out the new graphics card, and plugged the monitor into the motherboard's vga outlet.still no graphics on the monitor, and i can't ssh.
(and for extra points, how do i get my nvidia card to work?)

I have 10.10 installed on a Compaq laptop and want to set it up as a dual boot machine. I'm not sure how to 1) set up another partition 2) set up the dual boot and 3) install my second operating system. I'm sure that this is a pretty vanilla thing to do and am frustrated after trying to find out how to do it for a bit now.

I have a server that is on a high port number, and people want it on port 80. For root exploit issues people say the server can not run as root. So to solve things I want to redirect port 80 to a high port number, say 12345 on the machine. This has been discussed all over the web, so I find I need to do this:
/sbin/iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -p tcp -d 123.45.67.89 --dport 80 -j REDIRECT --to-ports 12345
/sbin/iptables-save > /etc/sysconfig/iptables
And I do this, an voila things work for the whole world. All machines in the world can see the server on port 80 on the machine.Except, on the machine itself. On the machine 123.45.67.89, I try to get to the server on 123.45.67.89:80, I get a can't connect error. On the machine if I try 123.45.67.89:12345 I can connect.What am I doing wrong here? I don't want localhost network really, I want the ip address and port, but I want the forwarding to work on the local machine. But it doesn't...

I have, say, 10 machines, connected via NFS and NIS. There's a server which exports the /home using NFS, and exports the user names using NIS. All machines are working fine. I am able to ssh to the machines remotely and get my work done.Recently though, one of the machines (say M, for easy reference) would not allow any other machine on the NFS network [or outside the NFS network] to ssh into it. Every time an ssh attempt is made, 3 IP addresses [including the machine from which an ssh attempt was being made] are added to the /etc/hosts.deny file on M, and the error message on the other machine shows 'permission denied' after the password is entered. I tried using various options that ssh provides, but I cannot figure it out. I also tried uninstalling and reinstalling openssh-client and openssh-server on M, but it didn't change anything.
Another point to note is this: another user made use of M before, for a while, by disabling ssh passwords - so he could access M without having to enter his ssh password. That individual can still log in to M. All others who require to enter a password cannot ssh into M.

Possible Duplicate: Automatically start VNC server on startup I have a Linux server at home, and by default no-one is logged in to that box. I'd like to establish a remote desktop connection to it with VNC but this fails, unless I log in first physically. It's strange to me that VNC Viewer doesn't even ask for credentials, it just displays a "connection refused" error message. What's the best way to do this? I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 on the server.
