i have the minimal install and im having network problems. after connecting and running dhclient i only have internet access for a minute or two before needing to re run dhclient. i tried making it run in cron every minute but my computer kept locking up. what could be causing this?
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy system (Ubuntu 9.10 Gnome Desktop) keeps 'forgetting' my sound settings. every day I have to go into sound preferences and select a different hardware device setting and then change it back to the right one in order for it to work. For instance my sound goes out of my onboard intel based sound via optical to my amp and so the hardware setting for this is IEC598 output + analog stereo input But everytime I boot their is no sound (and hence no light coming through the optical cable) so then I'll change it to Analog surround and the light comes out so then I can change it back to the 1st setting and it works again. Hope that makes sense, I have had this problem and also my video settings have been 'forgotten' and samba also won't work ever since about 4 days ago when the system updated, everything was working fine before that (i have run update manager since and everything is up to date)

Is there a way to enable these, so that they can be edited?

In particular, I want to be able to edit "Auto vmnet8", for VMware usage.
I know about the workaround of going back to the manual network configuration as used in older versions of Fedora, such as editing the files in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-* and then enabling the old "network" service and disabling the "NetworkManager" service.
However, this workaround really won't work in this situation. The VMware interfaces, vmnet1 and vmnet8, are virtual interfaces that *only* exist when the VMware services are running. The VMware services are started *after* the old manual network configuration would be applied. So, at the time the scripts in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts are processed, the vmnet1 and vmnet8 devices do not yet exist! I'm hesitant to change the numbering of services, lest other things break (VMware on Fedora 10 is rather fragile already).
I love the feature of NetworkManager to be able to automatically apply settings to newly materialized network devices (such as vmnet1 and vmnet8 when VMware is loaded). However, I need to also be able to edit those settings.
Is there a solution that will make my Network Manager "Edit" window not be entirely grayed out? I can see the settings pages just fine, but unfortunately, they are all disabled and I can't edit them at all.

In emerald settings manager I used to click on desired theme, edit it and save under a new name, then delete old one. Weird, but working. Now, when I click on theme in the list, it sets this theme and quits. I didn't find a way to adjust theme settings.
View 1 Replies View RelatedA friend of mine is running Ubuntu. He used to run Windows XP, but he kept destroying it completely, and I soon got tired of fixing it for him. So I setup Ubuntu, and we're both happier people for it.BUT! The other day he asked me to setup a VPN (PPTP) connection to his workplace, which I promptly did. It also just works, except for one minor problem: When he fires up the VPN connection, I lose the ability to connect to his computer over SSH. As soon as he shutdown the VPN connection, I can once again log in over SSH.I use the SSH connection for basic maintenance and for tunneling port 5900 so I can assist him over VNC.
His nic is setup with DHCP. Gateway is 192.168.57.1. Port 22 is NAT'ed to 192.168.57.2, which is the IP his computer is assigned by the router (it's reserved to his MAC address).
When he connect the VPN, a new interface is created with the IP 192.168.1.32. I'm very much _not_ a network expert. I can manage the very basic stuff, but beyond that I'm quite lost.
So I decided a while ago to download the newest distribution release, Lucid Lynx, and try it out on a LiveCD. The first thing I installed onto the LiveCD environment was CompizConfig Settings Manager. One question I have about it is... Why are so many of the plugins missing or limited?
In 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope, there are many plugin options, and to be honest, I use a large quantity of them. For example, a plugin I use on 9.04 called "Reflection." For those of you who don't know, reflection allows you to show an image in window decorations and shadows. This plugin is completely missing from CompizConfig Settings Manager in 10.04!
Another example, this time a limited one, is the Animations plugin. It's missing the option for closing animation called "Burn." This is an animation I LOVE showing off and using, yet it's... Gone.
Am I missing something? Did I do something wrong on installing it? Is there a way to get the parts that are missing?

I just updated to Ubuntu 10.04 and am in love with it. However, when I tried to restore everything I had on my compiz, I realized that a integral part for me was missing. The "maximumize" feature is gone. This is the feature that makes a window fill up all the space it can without interfering with other windows, essentially making it like the windows 7 tiling feature, only better since you can do it with multiple windows and in any way you want. This was in the compiz settings manager in 9.10.

I have no Vista disk, so when it's gone, its gone for good. The system is set up with BT using ADSL, with a wireless router included. I can access whats called the BT home hub manager through a URL in a web browser, this gives me all specific information with regards to getting online, router etc. My main concerns are: If i do a complete reinstall (Ubuntu) then will i still be able to configure it all with Ubuntu? I'm thinking that BT will probably not support Linux platforms hence any software coming from (i.e. disk) them would be in the form of Windows binaries, about as much use as a handbrake on a canoe as far as Linux is concerned. So, if i take the plunge then; if i can access BT home hub manager through a URI with all pertinent information displayed there - is that all i need to get me up and running? I mean, reinstall, visit BT home hub manager URI and configure Ubuntu with all settings found there?

I am running Karmic AMD64 on a homebrew desktop PC, but I also previously had this trouble on 32 bit with different hardware and on Ubuntu 9.04 and 8.10. The router is now an ADSL+ Thomson TG585n supplied by O2 and badged O2 Wireless box III. The PC has a direct ethernet connection. The router was replaced by O2 when the problem first appeared, as the Wireless box II was suspect. However, I still have the problem and it is getting more frequent.
The symptoms are these: I generally shut down the PC each night, and only fire it up again when needed, which is usually the following evening, but it remains on for most of the day at the weekend. Very often when started, I find I have no connectivity to the internet, and cannot retrieve my emails. Strangely though, the Skype connection is still present and works, although not every time. My wife's laptop is connected over the wireless link - and that STILL WORKS! Sometimes I can connect to the router interface, but sometimes I can't. I've never lost the connection while the PC is running.
I have tried everything I can find in the router (when I can connect) and also in the Systemreferences:Network Connections and also in System:Administration:Network Tools, but can't find anything that helps. A re-boot of the PC doesn't help. A re-boot of the router doesn't help. A hard reset of the router on it's own doesn't help. The only solution to restore the connection is a hard reset of the router (using the recessed reset switch in the back) followed by a re-boot of the PC.
Since the Skype service remains working, and the lights on the router remain normal and wireless service doesn't fail, I think this has to be a DNS server problem. In the previous release, Jaunty, I changed the DNS service to OpenDNS within Ubuntu, overriding the router's settings. That seemed to help a great deal, although there was still the occasional outage which might have been another cause. I can't find anything in the GUI interface in Karmic that will let me do this, and I can't now remember how I did that in Jaunty.
I have a Windows 7 Ultimate x64 machine networked with my Lucid machine. When I reboot my Windows machine, the only way I can access the shared drives is to also reboot the Lucid machine. Can anyone tell me why this is, and, more importantly, how to make it stop that?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI did a clean install of 10.10 just under a week ago and something is really wrong with my wired connection. I keep loosing all connectivity and have to connect again from the panel app. After that, every thing works again for about 30 to 60 seconds and the the connection goes again. No lost connection notification pop up or anything like that, but i cannot browse the web or download upgrades while the connection is gone.
Then the really weird part. Sometimes my connection works just fine. On some boots everything is fine for a long time (hours?) but then the problem comes back. My network card is an Intel 82567LF-2 and it uses the e1000e kernel module. I dual boot to Windows Server 2008 R2 and there I have full connectivity all the time.

Also, in 11.04 there's a "feature" where if I drag the title bar of a window against the top of the screen, it expands sideways. How do I disable that? I'm guessing I do it in CCSM.
I'm using Xubuntu 8.10, network-manager, Atheros AR2413 802.11bg NIC, and Radeon Xpress 200M with open-source ati drivers.
My problem is that I'm frequently losing my internet connection--whether I'm wired or wireless. It happens most often when I'm watching a ..... video but it happens other times too. My cpu usage is high when watching ..... (70-100%), so that may have something to do with it but I'm here because I really don't know.
I started having this problem when I switched from the proprietary fglrx driver to the ati driver. I switched because my laptop was always freezing halfway through a movie using vlc/mplayer. The ati fixed this but gave me my current problem. I do not want to go back to fglrx.
Here's what I've done so far to try to fix it without success:
-tried using noapci boot option
-tried using a different router
-tried using wicd
When I lose the connection I still have a strong signal. My lshw and iwconfig outputs are the same as before I lose my connection. However, I cannot ping my router when I lose the connection. I have to reboot to reconnect.

Everything was working fine until the hard drive on the server crashed and it was replaced with a backup. Now I intermittently lose access to the shares with Nautilus giving me the following message:
"The folder contents could not be displayed.You do not have the permissions necessary to view the contents of Folder"
When I look at the mount points in terminal I see the following:

Sometimes the permissions will revert back by themselves, sometimes I need to umount and mount to get back in.I have tried deleting and recreating the mount points. No change.It is driving me up the wall, I have tried everything I can think of, installing/uninstalling winbind, the fuse modules etc etc. I use this machine as a production machine in a heterogeneous environment and everything works awesomely except for this. I love Ubuntu, I can't even think of booting Windoze these days but not being able to access the network shares is a right show-stopper for me.
i wanted to change the opacity settings in compiz config settings manager (i read it in the forum post that i can change opacity using compiz settings) when i opened the ccsm, i did not find the opacity settings in general options...do i have to update or upgrade?

They are connected to another sw together with a Linux router on Cent OS 5.2. I can't ping the switches from the Linux box. If I arping them, I get a response and after that they are accessible for telnet. Otherwise they are not. After 5min the macs are flushed from the arp table of the Linux box, and then again they are not accessible only if I arping them, or set a static mac.

The problem persists & the hints I found around the forum did not provide a solution to the case, neither other net solutions i looked up I run Winblows at the lab and sometimes take my Ubuntu PC with me. There is an open Wireless network where they set MAC permission, and there's no pwd to access. It so should be fairly easy to change m MAC and access it, right! No. I run ifconfig and macchange, successfully change my MAC addr BUT the connection drops! Then if I change it back (MAC to my original address) it goes back online. And yes, I shut down the service -- "ifconfig wlan0 down" and then up..WHAT ON EARTH am I doing wrong??? No webpages touch this 'trouble-frigging-shooting instance!
View 2 Replies View RelatedI did a clean install of Ubuntu 10.04 on a Toshiba Satellite, Intel graphics card, a few days ago, and had no trouble accessing the CompizConfig Settings Manager. I changed a number of settings, and everything seemed to be working just fine. But two days ago, I noticed that the compiz effects (rotating desktop cube, minimize effect etc.) were gone; and when I now try to access the Settings Manager, I see a "Starting CompizConfig..." appear in the panel and linger for about five seconds; then it's gone. No settings manager, no error message.
The day that happened, I had (to the best of my memory) not installed any updates. I had, however, removed a bunch of applications through the Software Center. I had also launched Ubuntu Tweak and changed a couple of settings. The only option it showed, and shows, under 'Compiz Settings' was then (and still is): "Prerequisite Conditions" : "Install Advanced Desktop Effects Settings Manager". The box was checked. I have since unchecked and re-checked it, thereby uninstalling and re-installing the settings manager. But that hasn't changed anything.
