Ubuntu :: X11vnc Server Logs Out To Login Screen After 1 Minute?

Nov 3, 2010

I have x11vnc server set up on my desktop PC. I can boot the computer and connect at the login screen if I want to. I can login to my computer as usual. But after about 1 minute of logging in, the computer logs off as if pressing Ctrl+Alt+Backspace and returns me to the login screen. This cycle repeats when I login and I have to kill the x11vnc process or remove the command from /etc/gdm/Init/Default.Have tried so many things now but the end result is the same. I have Ubuntu 10.10 fully updated and x11vnc 9.10-1 from the default repos. I am using the following command in the /etc/gdm/Init/Default file:

Code:

/usr/bin/x11vnc -rfbauth ~/.vnc/passwd -rfbport 5901 -display :0 -forever -bg

I don't think it matters now whether I add KillInitClients=false into /etc/gdm/gdm.conf-custom or /etc/gdm/gdm.conf because of the x11vnc version I have. The manual says its not really needed. But I have tried this too with no better luck. The computer will still log me out after about a minute of logging in. It can be between 1 min to 1.5 mins.Running out of ideas and have tried the -noxfixes and -reopen commands.

Why does x11vnc crash out (or it may be gdm or x server?) after about a minute of logging in? If I am currently viewing my desktop through VNC viewer on another computer, it will still crash out after 1 min of log in, and lose the connection. I can reconnect through VNC again but I have to log back in to the remote computer and it will just log out after another minute. At last, in 2 days I have finally solved it. As simple as creating my own version. The x11vnc 9.10-1 version my default Ubuntu 10.10 repos is buggy. Here's my fix (I used this site):

1. Downloaded latest x11vnc dev build from above site (x11vnc-0.9.13-dev.tar.gz at time of posting)
2. Extract it
3. Open Terminal > sudo -s > enter admin password
4. cd LocationOfExtracted folder

CentOS 5 Server :: Login Via SSH Takes Over A Minute?

Nov 12, 2010

Just started to encounter this problem recently: after entering a valid password for a given user during an SSH login, it takes at least one minute to get to a prompt. It usually takes only a second to check the password and drop me to a prompt.

I haven't had this problem before - it seems to have started this week. Only thing I've done this week is run updates. Has anyone encountered this problem recently? Any ideas or fixes that may help solve this? Server info: not exposed to the Internet, only running SSH, fully patched version of CentOS 5.5 x86_64.

Fedora Installation :: X11vnc : Tail: Cannot Watch /tmp/x11vnc.tray.*

Jun 18, 2011

By invoking x11vnc with the -gui tray option the TCL/TK GUI attempts to embed itself onto the system tray, but I encounter the error message "tail: cannot watch /tmp/x11vnc.tray.*", after the first settings dialog approved [clicked OK]. I believe that a package is still missing to be installed and this is not really a software bug. I use the XFCE version shipped along F15, and the GUI can be started but not as a docked-applet.

Ubuntu :: Multi Session Login With X11vnc?

May 31, 2010

I'm creating a new thread based on this post by batagy:

[URL]

Quote:

So I have running x11vnc as service without any problem (running on Solaris 10 and SLES10 too). I'm using the x11vnc's inbuilt "user chooser" screen (that little black screen), these command line options:

x11vnc -inetd -unixpw -users unixpw= -display WAIT:cmd=FINDCREATEDISPLAY-Xvnc.xdmcp -env X11VNC_CREATE_GEOM=1248x900 (plus a couple of other options that are not interesting here)

My question is related to the wanted VNC screen size. By default, I set the defauls screen size to 1248x900, as can be seen above.

Currently , when a user want to personalize his/her screen size to be started, he can do it this way: when the small black authentication window is appearing first, after his username, he's entering a colon, then specify the wanted resolution in this format: geom=1600x1200.

My question: is it possible somehow to set automatically the preferred screen size, without entering this ":geom=1600x1200" string in the authentication window? I mean to set it per user, without modifying the service options. I mean, for example setting the X11VNC_CREATE_GEOM or FD_GEOM variables in the user's home ".profile" for example?

When I try to boot or install from it, the screen shows the "ubuntu" with the red dots for a minute and then a black screen with no action from the hard drive or the CD drive. I think it should be asking what language I want but presing enter does nothing.I have been using Ubuntu since 2006 and after yesterday's repartition I installed 6.06 from a live CD so I know I can install from a CD.

I just installed linux mint a couple of days ago and everything went great but now the grub screen takes about 20 seconds to a minute to load. It's not a huge issue but kind of annoying since the one that ubuntu installed took a second and I was at the menu. I imagine that it has to do with the background picture but i'm not sure if that would slow it down that much.

CentOS 5 Server :: Gnome System Menu Causes Crash For Either X11vnc Or Freenx?

Jul 28, 2009

Sorry if this is in the wrong group but its a bit of an odd one but I think comes under Server Support.. I've set up both x11vnc and freenx in an attempt to eliminate either as a cause for this issue. The problem is that when I log in with either, I can get into the desktop and run things from the menus but when I make the System menu active - the session hangs and you have to killall for the freenx or vnc processes.

I was wondering if anyone might be able to help me investigate this and hopefully fix it as I'm not sure where to look given that both types of remote connection seem to have the same issue.

Ubuntu :: Login To Xfce The Screen Goes Black - Flickers A Few Times Then It Brings Back To The Login Screen

Apr 12, 2011

My last setup (years ago) ran fluxbox so because it was familiar I installed it as a secondary to xfce right off the bat. I download a lot of different stuff because I like to try out all the apps I can find but somewhere I broke something. I can still run fluxbox fine, but nither the Xubuntu nor Xfce sessions will run now. Last thing I remember changing was pulse audio(removed it for an experiment I was trying with jack audio), not sure if it is connected but when I try to login to xfce the screen goes black, flickers a few times then it brings me back to the login screen.

I tried failsafe but everytime I do my monitor gives me a "frequency out of range" error. I tried purging and reinstalling xubuntu desktop and xfce settings but I am thinking its my xorg config. My laptop is a Toshiba satellite M305D-s4830 with ATI Radeon 3100 mobile graphics card and I am running Xubuntu 10.10. Unfortunately I also broke the screen, so right now I am stuck with an external monitor till I get a new one.

Ubuntu :: 11.04 Server - Screen Becomes Unreadable After Login

Jul 6, 2011

I've got a new installation of 11.04 server. Everything was apparently working just fine, and then the system hung. I rebooted, and everything looked good up to the login screen. After I typed my password, the screen started looking good, and then got all fuzzy and messed up (nothing was readable). The only way I could get anything back was to reboot. (I am able to work via ssh at the command line, though). As the graphics were fine before (using GDM), and since the GUI looks fine at the login screen, I know the system can do it.

I tried to find information on what might be going wrong, and haven't been able to find anything that fixes the issues. I thought there might besomething in my config, so I tried logging into another account on the system that doesn't have any user-level configuration, and got the same result (the machine's main purpose is to be a mail and file server). So it appears to me that something is happening to the graphics configuration after login when GDM loads. What I need to change?

Software :: Interaction With CUPS Server Takes Over Minute?

Apr 26, 2010

This has been raised as redhat bugzilla bug 583054 - seeI am posting here in case anyone else has dealt with a similar problem. In brief, I have a print server running Fedora 12/CUPS dual boot WinXP. The attached printer is a Canon BJC-4100. When the server is booted in F12, it takes over a minute for a networked Fedora 12 box to bring up a print dialog, or for the printer to start after a page has been submitted. When the print server is booted in WinXP, printing is immediate.

Tim Waugh identified the problem in the CUPS Troubleshooter output:
'D [10/Apr/2010:09:00:20 +1000] cupsdNetIFUpdate: "lo" = localhost:631',
'D [10/Apr/2010:09:00:37 +1000] cupsdNetIFUpdate: "eth0" = 192.168.0.199:631',

OpenSUSE Install :: Login Screen Keeps Bouncing Back To Login Screen

Sep 17, 2010

I have installed VirtualBox and setup a Windows Vista host, initially with a .vdi of 10gb. That filled up quickly, so I added another 20gb secondary partition, after first trying to allocate a .vdi to a SCSI controller. Configured the drive in Windows (Computer Management), and all seemed ok. I shutdown VB, and rebooted my Linux host (openSuse 11.3). Now I keep bouncing back to the login screen, and can't login to Linux KDE, but can login to a console.I do have the following info:

/etc/fstab:
/dev/dis/by-id/ata-ST9250410ASG_5VG0B5VS-part5 swap swap defaults 0 0
/dev/dis/by-id/ata-ST9250410ASG_5VG0B5VS-part6 / ext4 acl,user_xattr 1 1

[code]....

I did see a message before, that I don't see anymore, that said it could not start NFS services due to missing entry in fstab. Another I'm seeing now is it couldn't start the avahi-daemon, no space left on device. This is odd, since I have a 200GB drive, with half of it left, only max 30GB set to VB. Here's my df -k output:

/dev/sda6 Use% is 100%
devtmpfs Use% is 1%
tmpfs Use% is 1%
/dev/sda7 Use% is 46%

So root "/" is mounted on /dev/sda6, which looks like it could be a problem, but why would this suddenly be a problem after working with VirtualBox? Could this be a matter of just freeing up space on /dev/sda6? Like the /tmp folder that's under "/"?

Security :: OpenLDAP / NSS / PAM Produce Logs Of Failed Login Attempts?

Feb 16, 2011

I am trying to get OpenLDAP to authenticate user logins, but running around in circles. Are there any logs produced by either client and/or server that would indicate possible reasons why it was unable to login as a user?Below is an explanation, any ideas would be appreciated, as I think everything is setup as per the various articles on using LDAP.

I have a CentOS 5.5 OpenLDAP server, and several others, some host services, some are file shares (samba). So far I have been able to successfully configure OpenLDAP to carry out all the ldap* commands from both the local server and from any of the remote servers, either via non-ssl or ssl connections. However, as soon as I try connecting any services up to it, it doesn't play ball.Back to basics, having cleared off all previous attempts at this from all machines, I have gone through the following:

Installed OpenLDAP server/client on host (plus nss_ldap).
Configured /etc/openldap/slapd.conf (see below)
Configured /etc/openldap/ldap.conf (see below)

General :: Sync Server And Client - Wait Over A Minute For The Changes To Be Downloaded?

Oct 17, 2010

I work as a part-time consultant developing webpages, both back end and front end. When developing a back end application I'm using a server running ubuntu server edition to host the application while I'm developing it.The problem comes when I want to upload my changes to the server, now I'm using Dropbox both on the client and the server, the problem is that sometimes I have to wait over a minute for the changes to be downloaded (when I'm working out-of-home that is) so I'm looking for a better alternative. My options seems to be:Some open source version of dropbox which syncs directly to my server (haven't found anyting that sounds viable though)

Mount my server via some protocol (NFS, SSHFS etc)

Push changes manually via FTP, git, svn or something else

I'd like the sync to be as transparent as possible, meaning I'd like to do as little manual work as possible. The client I'd like to connect runs either OSX or Ubuntu. The ultimate solution would be to use NFS + VPN though that would be alot of work to set up and also I don't like the security in NFS (matching UID's doesn't seem very secure to me)

Server :: Write A Cron Job To Delete Imap Processes Every Minute

Jan 8, 2010

I'm running my website on a linux server. I'm using a mac. Apparently, mac mail has a bug where it creates too many imap processes.

Since I'm on a shared server with a 25 process limit, with 3 email accts x 4+ processes each = a lot of problems!

I'm trying to write a cron job to delete imap processes every minute.

I've tried two things

1) following this blog's advice [URL]

Code:
killall imap

i realised it was imapd not imap, but i tried another method anyway

2) create a kill-imap.sh file in my server folder.

Code:
#!/bin/bash
/usr/bin/killall imapd

then executing the file from the cron command /kill-imap.sh

both these cases, it didn't seem to work!

I would get a daemon emai reply with

imapd: no process killed

just to give more info, the existing imap processes look like this

/usr/lib/courier-imap/bin/imapd /home/sitename/mail/sitename.com/emailusername

honestly, I'm not too experienced in this, and i've searched the net without luck. can anyone advise what i'm supposed to do to kill these imap processes every 5 min via cron job?

CentOS 5 Server :: Start X At Startup Without Running Login Screen?

Jan 12, 2011

I am setting up a CentOS server that has no screen connected, and only has 2 Tesla cards. I have created a minimal xorg.conf and xinitrc file that doesn't load mouse or keyboard, and only creates two screens, one for each card at 320x200x24 bit. This is so I don't waste VRAM on a framebuffer I can't see.

I modified the xinitrc to just load tdm and nothing else as GNOME is a RAM hog. I am then using this setup to render stuff offscreen using OpenGL into FBOs which I read back to CPU and process. Currently for development I just run startx& when I login. I now want to know how to set x server to start automatically at boot. The CentOS docs say that it will try to load the GNOME login manager. The thing is that I don't want a login manager as it is useless as I login remotely via SSH.So:

1 - how to enable automatic x server in CentOS (im used to Ubuntu so not sure how to do this on Red Hat variants)

2 - leave x server running without starting login manager
