Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 Lucid Server - Blank Screen During Install?

Apr 21, 2011

I'm trying to install 10.04 Server on an old Dell Poweredge 600SC I had lying around, and I'm having an issue with the installation. I can boot from the disk without any issues, I select a language for the installer, and I get to the main menu (Install Ubuntu Server, Check Disk for defects, Test Memory, etc). When I select Install Ubuntu Server, it waits a couple of seconds and then goes straight to a blank screen. No flashing cursor or anything.

I've tried some digging on the issue and another thread from a while back said to add "vga=771" to the installer line and when I did that, I got an error from my monitor itself complaining about an incompatible video mode.I know I'm not the only one who has had this issue, I just don't know how to address it. This is the first problem I've ever had on an installation.

Ubuntu Installation :: Server Blank Screen + Blinking Cursor After Install?

I have installed it from usb as the cd installation failed at the point where you decide which type of installation you want (lamp or samba, etc)the installation completed but when booting nothing happens, only a black screen with a blinking cursor. pressing the shift key or any other keys doesn't work.strangely when i boot from the usb flash drive again (and not from the hard drive) the server does boot and asks for the user name and password!i have chosen the guided lvm partition with 20% reserved for system files.my machine is an athlon xp 2GHz (32bit), 1GB, SATA hard drive, nvidia 6600 graphicsmy guess is that its a problem with grub and lvm.

Ubuntu Installation :: Blank Screen: 10.04, ATI Radeon 9550 / X Tries To Load Screen Just Goes Blank?

May 9, 2010

I am having the same problem, as soon as X tries to load my screen just goes blank. I have an ATI Radeon 9550. At first I tried switching between VGA and DVI as well but upon ruling that out, I switch to my on-board video card and that is working thus far, but I'm trying very hard to figure out a way to be able to switch back. Anyways I'll check back in later on if I have any new information I will post.

Ubuntu Servers :: Blank Screen - HP Proliant Microserver And 11.04

Aug 3, 2011

I've installed Ubuntu Server 11.04 64-bit on an HP Proliant Microserver. The install seems fine but I'm having a start-up problem. When I boot the server, I get a blank screen after the Grub Menu. If I press ALT-F2 I get the login prompt. I've tried editing the grub file (after having done some googling) and tried adding nomodeset to the following line in the grub file:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash nomodeset acpi_osi=Linux"

I added nomodeset as well as acpi_osi=Linux to see if that would do somethng. After adding nomodeset, when I boot the server, I still get a blank screen after the Grub menu but this time a blinking cursor. Again, if I press ALT-F2 the login prompt shows up. So it boots (I'm able to putty/Webmin in even when the screen is blank) but don't know why I need to press ALT-F2 all the time to get the login prompt to appear. Plus I don't see the boot process right before the login as well.

HP Proliant has the following chipset and processor:
- AMD RS785E - north bridge, core logic controller
- AMD SB820M - south bridge
- AMD Athlon II NEO Processor 1.3 GHz Dual Core
I've also tried adding xforcevesa instead of nomodeset and that option too leaves me with a blank screen.

Ubuntu Servers :: Black Screen Booting Natty Server 11.04 Both CD And USB Install

May 11, 2011

I tried booting up natty server on both a unetbootem usb flash drive install and on CD. I get the menu of options to install like Install Ubuntu Server, Install Ubuntu Server 9 expert install, Cloud, etc. Hitting install either the 1st or 2nd option leads to a black screen but not at a frozen state(I can still reboot with ctrl-alt-del). The server Im installing on is a ibm system-x rack with a single xeon and a raid5 already setup to be used for installation. Now Im back to using lucid 10.04.2 which I might consider upgrading through Update Manager since I cant get natty to boot correctly with a working display. Anyone having similar problems on Natty server stable release? Also as I post this, I dont see a ubuntu server prefix, maybe it should be added?

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 Server - Screen Goes Blank After First Boot

Jul 14, 2010

I've installed 10.04 Server on a desktop three times. The install goes well and after the installation, the server reboots and I can login with no problems. I can also look around the file system and run some of the utilities. My network can also see the server. The problem comes when I restart the server for the first time after the installation restart. The system starts to come up and then the screen goes blank. The computer is still running but there is no video signal to the monitor; and the network cannot see the system. I believe this has something to do with the master boot record but I'm not sure.

Installation :: Ubuntu Install Screen Goes Blank At 69% / Why Is So?

Mar 7, 2010

Ok well this is my first post on the ubuntu forums and the problem I have is, hopefully, pretty simple to fix. When I am installing Ubuntu, I go through all of the steps and once it asks where to install and partitioning and all that I tell it to erase the entire windows thing and put in Ubuntu. So I click the Forward button and when it gets to 69% of copying files, the screen goes black. It sounds like its still running the install but I cant be sure. What should I do?

Then I can do nothing but power down by holding the power button.I've tried both 64 and 32 bit versions, same thing. The 32 bit disk works fine on another computer. I've also tried booting another version of Linux, Helix, from CD and that also works fine. I'm thinking ubuntu doesnt support my graphics card: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator HD

Ubuntu Installation :: New Install - Blank Screen - 10.10

Oct 24, 2010

I'm installing Ubuntu 10.10 64bit (and ive tried 32bit) on a brand new Sony Vaio as a dual boot on Windows 7.

All goes well and I eventually get to the desktop on Ubuntu but the screen isnt right. Its not so much the resolution as its perfect in clarity but its the physical borders right and bottom are out of screen. Move the mouse to the right and bottom and the mouse disappears. I cant see the bottom bar at all. But like I said, the res clarity is perfect. I've tried playing with the res but it wont change the border issue.

Soon enough, on the top right, I get a hardware driver update alert for a Nvidia and asks me to activate. I do this with the hope to fix my screen size issue. Once activated, I restart and thats it, I get a blank screen.

This is what ive tried:

In recovery mode, i can get in with low-graphics.

Uninstalled the Ubuntu recommended Nvidia driver and all is ok.

Tried downloaded the correct Nvidia driver for my laptop but exact same.

In low graphics mode, when I launch Nvidia X Server, I get this error: 'You do not appear to be using the Nvidia X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run 'nvidia-xconfig' as root), and restart X server.'

OpenSUSE Install :: Booting After 11.3 Install - Hangs At A Blank Screen ?

Jun 8, 2011

I recently tried to upgrade my openSuSe 11.1 system using the instructions at:

SDB:System upgrade - openSUSE

I successfully got the system to 11.2, but the upgrade from 11.2->11.3 went awry. The installation froze during the update, and I had to start it over. The first issue I had to deal with was the fact that rpm had been upgraded and zypper hadn't, so zypper wouldn't function because older rpm files that it would search for had been deleted. After rolling back rpm to a previous version, I managed to complete the upgrade to 11.3 and everything looked good. However, when I rebooted the system, it hangs at a blank screen. More precisely, the system seems to get through all of the BIOS stuff and then hang while loading the OS (I assume). Although I've worked on Windows boxes for a long time, I'm a complete novice at OS installations/upgrades for Linux systems, so I'm not even quite sure where to begin to troubleshoot this. Ideally, I'd like to be able to fix the installation on the system to save the data on the hard drives, but I realize this might not be possible. My first thought was to use a recovery tool that I'd seen on some Linux installation CDs, but I see that for openSuSe 11.3 and on that utility has been dropped. I can, however, use the disk to get to the "Rescue" command prompt, so maybe there's something I can do from there?

Ubuntu Installation :: Blank Screen After Successfu Install

I'm extremely close to getting ubuntu on my old Toshiba Sattelite 1135-S155. It meets the minimum requirements (barely).I was able to go through almost the entire install process, but at the end when I restarted, I was told to remove the disc and hit enter, which I did. Then nothing but a black screen with a blinking cursor and unresponsive keyboard. I powered down, restarted, and got the grub. Same thing: it identifies the Ubuntu OS , but when I select it to boot, nothing but a black screen with a blinking cursor and unresponsive keyboard.

I'm trying to run this machine purely on ubuntu- no windows installed.I can actually load and run the OS from the "Try Ubuntu" option that rune off the CD.

Then I couldn't get into ubuntu again. When it starts booting the display just shuts down and says "Power Saving mode". The computer continues to load things etc. left it running and hoped it would show itself... nothing.

Anyway this happens everytime even with Live CD so I can't even get to a terminal... Started the boot without the splash and it went blank after it started some Speech thing. Just before that there were a few firmware files missing.

Ubuntu :: Blank Screen After Install Restricted Drivers

Aug 9, 2011

I just reseantly got an Asus Essentio CM1730-05 desktop and I installed Ubuntu 11.04 on it with Wubi. After doing so, I installed the restricted driver for my onboard ATI Radeon 3000 graphics. After doing so I get to a blank screen right after the splash screen. Also I think it is frozen because I don't here the Log in music and I have to hard reboot instead of just hitting the power button. If you need to know more about my hardware just ask. Also I have tried two different monitors.

A Dell M991 and my HDTV. I have used the following hook ups to the HDTV-DVI to HDMI and HDMI to HDMI. The Dell M991 is like any older monitor. Just that one VGA hook up. I noticed there is an Asus section so I hope that this is still the right spot. I have tried the following. Replace quiet splash with nomodeset and also i915.modeset=1. I have yet to try i915.modeset=0.
