Ubuntu :: Samba Installed But Won't Run - Unrecognized Service
Jul 19, 2011
I have a few computers that share files from this main Ubuntu desktop - I've been having samba problems so I've run Quote: sudo aptitude purge samba then re-installed it from the Software Centre. But it's not starting:
Code:
brent@Bertha:~$ sudo service samba start
samba: unrecognized service

I've been trying to install samba the last couple days, every time I do apt-get install samba it says that its the latest version but there's no samba folder in /etc/ and when I try /etc/init.d/samba start (or stop or restart) I get no such file or directory errors.
I've tried apt-get --purge remove samba to remove it and then reinstall but it does nothing and after the reinstall I'm still left with the above problem.

I've after latest jessie update a problem with service samba restart. If I use "service samba restart", there is a timeout (after long time) and error.
Output of "systemctl status samba.service":
Code:
Select all● samba.service - LSB: ensure Samba daemons are started (nmbd and smbd)
Loaded: loaded (/etc/init.d/samba)
Active: failed (Result: timeout) since Mo 2014-10-20 02:16:57 CEST; 7s ago
Process: 6205 ExecStart=/etc/init.d/samba start (code=killed, signal=TERM)
Okt 20 02:16:57 server systemd[1]: samba.service start operation timed out. Terminating.
Okt 20 02:16:57 server systemd[1]: Failed to start LSB: ensure Samba daemons are started (nmbd and smbd).
[Code] ....
Whats going wrong. "service samba restart" should bring no error message if the service is not running previously.

Just like the title states, as soon as my server comes up, I see the samba share that I made and can browse it just fine.
I don't see the printer share nor can I print to the shared printer until I execute service smbd restart from an ssh login. Then I see the printer and then I can network print.
Before restarting smbd, I do check to see if it's already running and it is (two instances are running in fact). When I restart smbd, there are still two smbd services running but they have higher PID numbers (and I can then print).
I'm running 10.04. how to make it all start up happily the first time without any intervention from me?

I am running Server 10. I have a requirement to perform an action before the MySQL service starts, and perform another action after MySQL service stops.
I found the init script for MySQL under /etc/init/mysql.conf. I added my thing to the pre-start script there and works fine.
I am having trouble finding the script that stops the server so I can modify.

After a couple of months of not using the dektop it warned me to check/correct some issue with the HDD, which I did. After the steps taken by the system to check the disk it went to the sign-in screen for ubuntu but it no longer recognize my password, so can't use it.
I remember that at the time when I was installing the OS it gave me a long list of alphanumeric characters which I would need in case of login problems in the future but I can't find where I wrote that string of chrs.. I deal with this issue by using the livecd from where I installed the OS or I do indeed need that string?
Important notes
1) Ubuntu 10.04 LTS
2) Plenty of free hard disk space
3) Properly partitioned disk
4) Recognized partitions at startup
5) Never before any issue/error of this sort

I have the keyboard: HP 6511-SU and it has a lot of buttons that would be useful to me; however, Ubuntu does not even recognize and does absolutely nothing with the majority of the buttons it has. The ones that it does pick up, it is mapped incorrectly (ex.: the media button, "stop" would be mapped to "eject". That's easily corrected by remapping it by going to System> Preferences> Keyboard Shortcuts. Is there a program or configuration file that will map the unrecognized buttons?

recently my ps3 unfortunately got the YLOD and i hadn't backed up all my saved files prior to that. Yesterday i tried to connect the ps3 hard drive to the computer to see if i could access and possibly copy the files, despite people saying it isn't possible. The thing is when i connect it the drive doesn't come up in 'Computer,' however it is shown in disk utility. From memory it also says 'unrecognized or unknown' underneath.

About 2 years ago I installed Ubuntu on my desktop as a dual boot with Windows XP. I am able to run either OS but, when booting, I get:Warning: Unrecognized partition table for drive 80. Please rebuild it using a Microsoft-compatible FDISK toolThe Ubuntu boot up is always successful. I am currently running Ubuntu 8.04 Is this a normal result of the Ubuntu installation partitioning? I don't want to mess with the partition table unless I know what I'm doing and maybe that warning is a red herring.
