View 1 RepliesOn my drive I had 2 partitions for an Ubuntu 9.04 (swap, /) and one partition for Windows. I figured out that I should upgrade my Ubuntu, so I deleted the "/" partition and in its place created 2 new partitions (/, /home) .
After installing the latest Ubuntu 11.04, I realised that although I had backuped everything I needed in a 2nd disk and I could access those folders and their data from my Ubuntu 9.04, both my Windows and the 11.04 can locate neither the folders nor the data now. I have no idea why this happened (perhaps some issue with the mounting?) I have tried the trial version of Stellar Phoenix linux data recovery tool, but it cannot locate the old partitions.
I have a 16GB Corsair Flash Voyager GT pen drive. It worked fine for some time but recently, I am not sure for what reason, it is showing to have only 7.56GB of space.
Is it possible to fix this or is it the pen drive physically damaged?
I have a system with two hard drives: an old one with XP and Ubuntu on it, and a new one on which I have done a fresh install of XP. The BIOS is set to boot off the new drive. I have now installed Ubuntu Studio 10.04(off an alternate install disc, not a live CD)onto a partition on the new drive. The installation went fine, but it appears to have written the GRUB bootloader to the old disc. The result is that when I boot up, the system boots straight into XP off the new drive, without ever seeing GRUB. I could reset the boot order in the BIOS each time I boot according to which OS I want, but that is cumbersome; also I would like to be able to remove the old drive at some point.
What is the easiest way for me to re-install GRUB to the new disc ?
I recently 'acquired' a USB drive enclosure. To test it, I put in an old drive, a maxtor 3200 120Gb. All was ok so I put in my working drive, a Seagate, also 120Gb. Now it all works, but the BIOS, openSUSE and Windows still report that the Maxtor is attached? How do I convince the BIOS that it is no longer there and get it to fetch the correct details of the attached drive?Board is ASUS M2N-MX, BIOS up to date
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm running into a weird problem when trying to install from the live CD I'm running. Basically, I have two hard drives: sda, a 160GB HDD which has Windows 7 on it, and is the one I would like to put kubuntu on; and sdb, which is a plain 500GB NTFS file system I keep all my personal stuff on.When I get to 'disk setup' and choose 'install side-by-side', it defaults to sdb instead of sda and I can't change it. I've created a 20GB partition on sda, which is where I want to put kubuntu, but it still defaults to sdb. I also can't figure out how to install to where I want using the advanced partitioning menu.
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy old server machine running Ubuntu 6 experienced hardware failure, so I built a new machine with spare parts and decided to install 10.10. I used the 2 HDDs from the old machine and decided to use existing partitions for the 10.10 installation. I specified the existing partitions on a 250 GB PATA drive for root, /boot, /home, and swap. For some reason when I booted up 10.10 for the first time, the other HDD (750 GB SATA) was mounted as /boot. I never specified the second drive to be used for anything during the installation, so I have no idea why this happened.and how can I change the mount point for /boot? I would like the highlighted partition in the attached screenshot to be /boot. I really hope nothing on the 750 GB drive was overwritten in this whole process, because it contains all of my photo and video backup.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a HP Compaq 6710b notebook with W7 on it. I want to use Ubuntu for hobby activities, but as this is a company notebook, W7 should remain intact. I decided to install Ubuntu to an external drive.I set BIOS boot order to CD-USB-HDD.I attached a 2.5" 250GB WD Passport usb hard disk and installed Ubuntu to it from the CD.As a result, the clean install doesn't boot, I get a mere grub console (normal, not rescue).
Examining the situation I learned, that during Live CD session the inner hdd is hd0 and usb drive is hd1. Grub.cfg gets compiled to use /dev/sdb.When booting from usb drive, BIOS makes it to be hd0 and inner hdd becomes hd1 so grub tries to load kernel from W7 partition (and can't find it, I wonder why? )How to fix problem? Although grub.cfg is supposed not to be edited, may I change every sdb to sda in it?
I have 3 drives in my computer. I installed Fedora 11 on my two biggest one, with the LVM treating them as one single drive. I attempted to install XP on my last drive. As I was installing, I selected my third drive (I'm 100% sure it is the correct drive as it is an 80gb whilst the others are 120 and 200 respectively) and told it to delete the partition on that drive and format. After I did that, it started to format, starting with my 120! I'm fairly sure that it was merely a quick format, as it only took 5-10 seconds for it to format, and that my data is still there. Is there any way to recover my "lost" data, or did I just really screw myself over?

View 13 Replies View RelatedI have a x64 OpenSUSE server with two hard drivers installed. The first one is used for the / and /home partitions and the other is for backups. Ironically enough it is the backup hard drive I am having trouble with. I was having trouble writting to the drive and unmounted it to preform a fchsk, however now when ever I try to mount it I get the following error:
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda1,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
dmesg | tail or so
Does anyone know who I can repair the drive and retrive data?
When I booted my computer up from coming back to school, it booted weird.
And also it won't let me go to administration or else it freezes.
I can't attach a screenshot because it usually goes to my desktop but I can't see my icons or I can't go to the desktop folder.
I'm running ubuntu 11.04 with a Pentium T2060 1.6ghz. Ubuntu only lets it go up to 1.2ghz. And no its not a cpu power saving feature. In Windows it gets to 1.6ghz fine
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have 1GB ram and 2GB swap space. It seems that linux programs somehow are aware that there are 3GB ram avaialable and pretty fast uses more than 2.5GB. System becomes unresponsive because of excessive swapping. On the other hand if I disable swap, using the same programs (chrome, vlc, openoffice) I get only ~600MB use while watching videos and browsing net.
I know, that linux uses all available ram to enhance performance, but in my case, it really hurts the performance. I also cannot leave the swap off, because I sometimes want to do some 3d editing, and then the memory usage can exeed 1GB.
So basicly my question is, if it is possible to force swap usage only when really needed, and make it so, that swap is not considered free ram and filled up with useless junk. (For example, if swap is enabled VLC player just loads whole movie into swap! - which of course is useless, because movie is located on the same hard drive, but VLC is not the only offender)
The update manager recently installed a new version of CUPS on my 9.10.
Now when I print a simple Open Office document it comes out in magenta instead of black. Same applies to printing from gedit.
I am running Ubuntu 10.04 from an external hard drive. I am able to get to the GUI login and enter the correct user/password combination. However, one I push enter it cuts away to a blank screen then returns to the login screen as if nothing happened. This doesn't happen if I log in without GUI (using alt+ctrl+f1 (or any other function key but 7).
Can someone tell me what is going wrong? I am still able to access my files from the hard drive by booting from a live CD if that matters at all.
If you're a fallible creature like myself you will sometimes uninstall packages using apt-get commands and then scratch your head when a dependency is missing and something that normally worked on your computer no longer does. So... I wrote this bash script that I think a lot of you will find more than useful. Execute this script before using any apt-get command and any package that is removed will be logged appropriately in ~/.oops .If you later find that something no longer works you can reinstall those packages . Just remember the "oops" script will continue to run until you turn it off. This can be done by pressing Ctrl+C while in your terminal.
Code:
#!/bin/bash

View 9 Replies View RelatedWhile trying to get a new revision of ntfs-3g packaged for my OS (2010.10.02) i've run into an odd issue. I pulled the ntfs-3g sources, and got the package sources for the ntfs3g debs (apt-get source ntfs3g).I pulled the <src dir>/debian directory into the new sources, went into <new src dir>/debian/<package names>/DEBIAN and altered the versions in the control files to reflect the current version. However, during dpkg-build, the versions revert to the original package version which is 2010.03.06. When these debs get installed, apt-get update thinks that despite both the version of the installed package, and the version of the upstream package being the same, that it should replace the one i made with the upstream.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm using Ubuntu 11.04 with Gnome 2 (a.k.a. the "Ubuntu Classic" shell) and the "New Wave" theme from the official repositories.
This installation started out as 10.04, and was then immediately upgraded to 10.10. I had to do that because 10.10 wouldn't install directly because of some bug.
It worked fine until I upgraded to 11.04, now I've got a bug whereby Qt apps don't render properly.
See the image here:
Now if I open the "Qt 4 Settings" tool and set it to Cleanlooks:
As you can see, it works correctly with Cleanlooks, but with it set to "Desktop Settings (default)", it is impossible to see the current selection, dividers etc.
This affects all Qt4 applications.
I have tried installing the package including the theme from 10.10 and that didn't help so I'm inclined to think it's not New Wave that is at fault here. Perhaps it's something that was changed for Unity?
(I'd rather not switch to a different theme, this one works for me. And I'd switch to Linux Mint but I've got all my stuff set up on here )
I downloaded and installed Ubuntu-Server 11.04, then installed XFCE as a light weight, fast desktop. Then I installed Synaptic from apt-get. Now, Synaptic complains that I am entering the wrong password. I cannot log in to Synaptic at all.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI upgraded Netbook edition from Lucid to Maverick, and it's gone horribly wrong. It may be because I had set up the a Gnome session in Lucid so that I could add and remove applets to panel in while still having the netbook session layout.
After distro upgrade I ended up with a hybrid system with both the unity launcher AND the Lucid-style UNE launcher. Unity does not recognise any of my installed software, e.g open office or bibus in "Office". UNE launcher does. There is also no option of Gnome session at login, only Desktop and Netbook!

How can I delete the other one and install the right one? I installed the desktop version and I needed the netbook version. Can I delete the partition and install the right version like new?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a strange problem with my Ubuntu Natty virtual machine running under VirtualBox on OSX.One day last week, my clock on the top bar in Gnome stopped displaying the correct time (I'm not running Unity). I'm on GMT, so right now it should be 9:31, but it's showing 3:31, so I think it's something to do with TimeZones. If I go into the date and time applet, the time is initially wrong but after a second sets itself to the correct GMT Time. The timezone is correclty set as London and it makes no difference if I unlock and set it again or select manual or automatic from internet time.
From a bash prompt, the "date" command shows: "Tue Sep 20 03:33:35 CDT 2011".If I run "sudo dpkg-reconfigure tzdata" I am correctly set as London. Upon exiting the commnand I'm shown the correct London time, but then typing "date" again shows the CDT time again. The clock is correct in OSX. This has been working fine for a month or two - I think it stopped working after an update last week. Any ideas?
