I am using a microphone to record a sound with gnome recorder. All I get is noise. If I am yelling at the top of my voice, then I get a feeble sound o/p in mid of a lot of noise. I know my mic is alright. I use skype and during a call, the other person can hear me very well. So the problem is not mic. So I shall have to tweak the gnome recorder to get a better o/p.

I made it this way so that I wouldn't get audio lag in programs, but it also means I can't play audio in more than one application at a time, apparently (with some odd exceptions). I want to record a streaming-audio (not capture), to use an alarm sound. I opened up gnome-sound-recorder, but I don't see input drop-down menu. I tried Audacity, but it's missing the menu, too.I saw the specification sheet of my laptop, but it only says Mobile Intel� GS45 Express Chipsets, I'm not sure if it manages sound, too, but the sheet doesn't have any information about sound chip set.dd: It seems like I can't change this to 'solved'. I cannot say it is solved, as I don't yet see the drop-down menu in gnome-sound-recorder, but with PulseAudio I can perform the task, so it can be regarded as solved?

I've installed PulseAudio Volume control and selected monitor of internal analog stereo. View 2 Replies View RelatedFor some time, my microphone input doesn't reach the recording application, but instead goes directly to the loudspeaker. If I make a sound in the microphone, it will go to the loudspeakers, and Audacity or Skype will not "hear" anything (and of course, with this set-up, there's a constant noise in the loudspeaker, coming from the microphone).This problem goes away if I install PulseAudio. So obviously, there's nothing broken with either of ALSA or hardware, only some misconfiguration somewhere, and PulseAudio can make a sense of the mess. Playing with all sorts of configurations in Alsamixer didn't help.
Unfortunately, I don't want PulseAudio, because it causes output problems which are a bit too subtle for me to describe coherently here. So I'd rather fix ALSA than Pulse.Please direct me into how to investigate this. The OS is Debian Unstable, the audio card is an integrated Intel ALC1200.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have an Intel HDA audio card, and would like to record both my soundcard output and my microphone input at the same time. Getting to record my soundcard output (aka "Stereo Mix" or "What-U-Hear") is impossible for my soundcard without using the PulseAudio monitor, so I've set that up. Now I can record either the PulseAudio monitor for my soundcard, or the microphone input, but I don't know how to record both at the same time.
Currently, my .asoundrc looks like this:

So now I can choose either "pulse" as an input channel in, for example, Audacity or RecordMyDesktop applications (and then set in the PA volume control the actual channel which I want recorded), or choose "pulse_monitor" or "pulse_mic", in order to record either the PA monitor or the microphone, respectively.
I've read through the ALSA plugins reference, as well as the Asym and Dmix pages on ALSA wiki, but I'm still not sure how to put this together. I figured there should be a way either to route the microphone input into the ALSA output, and thus make the PA monitor "hear" what I speak into the microphone, or to make a completely new channel with both ALSA output and microphone input as "slaves", and then use that for recording.
Is there a Sound Recorder like the Total Recorder for Windows? Someone told me to use Audacity, but Audacity recorded the mic input (e.g. the net radio sound through the speakers together with the noise of the room). Maybe I just cannot find the right settings.

I need the option of pausing the recording, and then continue into the same file (appending), so that I can take notes as required
I basically can't get my mic to work in F12. After several releases fighting with pulseaudio, F11 finally worked almost OBO, after going to system->preferences->advanced sound configuration and setting all the input volumes to the maximum. But now there's no advanced sound configuration tool, and I just can't find anything to make it work. Skype isn't working, nor is gnome-sound-recorder. I do record some static, but nothing more. By the way, I'm on an Acer Timeline 3810T.

IBus used to work fine with gnome 2.3 and unity, but in gnome 3, the icon is still there, the deamon is still running (I presume) but no matter where i click, it always shows 'no input window'... (for example, i can't type anything other than English here...).

I logged in and half the keys didn't work, the other half were numbers not the letters they were supposed to be. This started after log in, meaning I was able to enter my password properly: The problem starts when gnome boots up.
By copy and pasting, I installed Kubuntu, where the keyboard also works properly, so this is clearly a gnome problem. I haven't ruled out malicious software, which seems like the next step: How do I verify and replace all the software (gnome) that might be corrupted?
I'm trying to get a script to open a gnome-terminal and input commands into it, just as you would typing them in. That way, I can automate commands using bash, even if the terminal is running a non-bash program like telnet, mysql, vim, etc.
So, for instance..
I would like to open telnet to connect to a mud (I'm aware of the security concerns) and input commands through a script.
This way, I can log in, enter name/password, and do some start-game stuff automatically.
This isn't just for a mud, though. I'd like to be able to script inputs for any terminal application... maybe automate vim, mysql, or whatever.
Running 10.10 with compiz and gnome
The whole screen goes dim for any of the below examples. running "compiz --replace" fixes it until any of the below happens again. When the screen is dim, a new window opened (ex: firefox new window or a new gnome terminal) is full brightness while the rest of the screen stays dim.
Following causes the screen to go dim: In the screen saver - hit the delete key to backspace when the password field is empty. in firefox - ^f to find on a page - start typing and as soon as the find field has text that does not exist anywhere on the page "Phrase not found" the screen dims. in gnome terminal - the profile has the terminal bell checkbox ON - hit backspace on a bash input line with no text on it.
While I can find my way around most things, terminals and desktop managers are different than I remember. One of the biggest problems that I am encountering today is that when running a gnome terminal (this is Suse 10.0 enterprise), I'm getting behavior in the window that I don't want. Specifically, when I type, my typing is underlined as if something is trying to spell check my window. Further, it seems as if when running vi or less, my keystrokes are only processed by these apps when I hit 'return'. I.e. if I'm running less and want to go back a page, I'll hit b, but nothing happens until I hit 'return'.
I seem to have tracked this down to the 'input method". Right clicking in the Gnome terminal allows me to set my input method to one of a dozen values. It seems that currently, it's set to "SCIM Input Method". If I then select 'default' or 'X Input Method', apps (i.e. things like less, vi, and even the bash shell) behave as I would expect.
a) what is this SCIM input method
b) how can I make it so that it is not the default?
I've poked around various configuration files in my home directory as well as in /etc, but I can't see to find how this is set.
I have a new install of Karmic on my system with a flyvideo 3000 tv card installed. My problem is that it doesn't find any radio channels and the input channel is completely wrong. I don't have any sound on gnomeradio and can't find the config files to change the input channel. The only input option available to me is dig1 - can anyone point me in the right direction?
I have already read the Howto for this tv card and changed the device to radio0 in the setup. I have setup tvtime perfectly with sound channel as well as with a 5.1 surround configuration. I am missing my favourite radio channel. and I want to get rid of my windows installations once and for all! Update: I did a system update and some things have changed: the radio tower graphic on gnomeradio is now green (I assume it is getting a signal) but no sound yet.
I recently got a real fancy unidirectional microphone, but when I go and use it, something strange happens. The mic is a mono mic, but when I record something, it appears to think it's stereo. Instead of having the same thing on both channels, it puts it all in the left channel, and silence on the right channel.
I tried fiddling with alsamixer. In capture (F4), adjusting the "Capture" device has an effect. However, it doesn't do anything useful. Lowering the right channel to zero does nothing, lowering the left channel to zero creates silence, and disabling the right channel creates silence.
In my System>Preferences>Sound (or pavucontrol, or what-have-you), there are "Analog Stereo Input" and "Analog Stereo Duplex" options there, but no "Analog Mono Input" or "Analog Stereo Output + Analog Mono Input" options (the latter being ideal).
Something interesting, though, if I do this:

arecord -r 96000 -D pulse -c 1 -vv -V mono /dev/null
it works correctly and outputs on both channels. But if I do

arecord -r 96000 -D pulse -c 2 -vv -V stereo /dev/null
then it's back to the same behavior. The VU meter on the second command shows the left channel going up and down as I make noise, but the right one always at zero.
The machine does have a crap internal mic built in to the screen bezel. If I do either of the above commands, they both work correctly. The stereo VU shows the same activity for both channels.
The machine is a Eee 1015PED, which has Intel integrated sound. Something probably insignificant is that the mic has a 1/4 inch mono plug, and to get it to plug into the Eee, I needed to get a 1/4 female to 1/8 male adapter. The mic's 1/4 plug is mono (duh) and therefore two-conductor, but the adapter I got is stereo, or three conductor (L, R, GND). I don't know if this is tripping something in hardware to tell it it's stereo or something.
I tried the mic on my desktop, which has a SB Audigy 4 (the non-pro flavor) and that has the "Analog Mono Input" function, so that works fine. Is there some way to turn this stereo input into mono input?
I installed Lucid. I used to have Ubuntu 9.10 and to connect my iPod to my laptop's speakers. There was an option in 9.10 in the Sound Options to change the Mic Input into a Line Input. But now unfortunately I can't find it in Lucid have only 2 audio ports in the laptop: Headphone port, Mic port.

I've read, the SCIM input program should start up automatically when loading a program, it doesn't. When I have it loaded I cannot seem to get the input working.
I can't get Thai language input to work.
In "language support" I installed Thai, but it remains grayed out.
In "ibus preferences / input method", no languages are shown.

It just hung, and then I needed to reboot.I just tried recordmydesktop on Ubuntu 11.04 Gnome with no luck. The video saved, but there was no audio.
