I know that pressing ctrl+alt+shift+R enables me to record my screen, but I can't merge my voice with it. Is it limited to video recording without audio? If that's true, how can I merge two separate an audio file with video file (Gnome produces *.webm videos by default)
View 7 RepliesI am using a microphone to record a sound with gnome recorder. All I get is noise. If I am yelling at the top of my voice, then I get a feeble sound o/p in mid of a lot of noise. I know my mic is alright. I use skype and during a call, the other person can hear me very well. So the problem is not mic. So I shall have to tweak the gnome recorder to get a better o/p.

Whenever I try running ANY screen recording program, my desktop runs too slow to use. I don't think this is a problem with my hardware capabilities, as I used to be able to record my screen perfectly in Windows, whilst doing multiple other tasks. I've installed the ATi/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver.
I've been using Linux for a good six months now, and I'm loving it. I've recently upgraded from Ubuntu 9.10 to Ubuntu 10.04. When I was using 9.10, I couldn't use ANY screen recording software (Trust me, I tried a lot), as it made my desktop 'lag' so much but I just thought it was a problem with my OS, because when I was running Windows Seven I could record my desktop perfectly in HD, whilst running a lot of other applications.
My computer isn't exactly amazing spec, got a dual core 2.20ghz processor, and 256mb ATi Raedon graphic card.
Since recently upgrading to 10.04, I still can't record my desktop due to 'lag'.
Will this be a problem with my hardware? Is my computer just not powerful enough to record my desktop on Ubuntu? Or is another problem which I haven't even thought about?
I see a lot of people make ..... videos with screen recording,.. what's the best to use? Any in the software center?

I can't find anything in the GUI to set preferences, and I can't find a text configuration file to edit, either.I've tried rec and arecord, but they both give a similar message:
I made it this way so that I wouldn't get audio lag in programs, but it also means I can't play audio in more than one application at a time, apparently (with some odd exceptions). I want to do a screen capture with audio and video. I use Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit.I have now spend about half a day trying various tools, most of which seem to be half finished or abandoned. I have not found any usable docs for any of these.gtk-recordmydesktop and xvidcap will both capture video, but seem unable to capture audio from a microphone. The mic is connected and the sound preferences "input" tab shows the input level jumping up when I speak, so it must be working.
I tried the pulse audio device chooser app to make sure the mic is selected, but the choices for input are DEFAULT and "other", which shows a blank input with no choices.xvidcap multi-frame dialog has dev/dsp pre-selected as the input device, with no other options. It does not work.If I enable audio with gtk-recordmydesktop, it refuses to start and says it cannot open the sound card. There is no apparently no way to do this using the "advanced" dialog which has DEFAULT preselected as the audio input device and no other options. /dev/dsp also fails to start.I spent some time searching google and the forums here, to no avail. So should I give up trying to do this with Linux or is there some obscure method I only need to discover?I prefer xvidcap, since the ogg format output by recordmydesktop seems to be a write-only format.
the code when recording a screen using terminal command? it has this code "xllgrab".. that's all i can remember.. i read it somewhere in this forum and it really works but i can't find that thread anymore

View 3 Replies View RelatedIn my corporate environment, I'm required to run a Windows machine that acquires a VNC session on a machine in the server farm. My windows machine is dual head with different resolution monitors ( 1600x1080 on left and 1920x1200 on right). If I create a VNC session that spans the monitors, then maximizing a window in the VNC session causes it to stretch across both my monitors.
Instead, I want a "maximize" event to behave like it does on my windows machine -- I only want to maximize to the display that the window is on.
How can I define what, what I'll call, "maximize regions"? Regions in the VNC graphical plane where when I click "maximize", the window only expands to the region it currently ( and mostly) resides in.
Can I do this in gnome, X, xrandr, or some other magical interface?
I use Ubuntu 10.10 with both Gnome and KDE desktops. My default screen res is 1366x768, and there is no problem with KDE, Gnome indicates that my res is the same but everything on the screen looks too large. When I lunch an app like GIMP I can't see the inmenu icons, it's not a pain to die but sometimes makes work harder. At first I told it was the way Gnome looks (I have never before run linux on such a high res), but when I boot another distro like Debian everything is OK. Also my display mode is locked to laptop screen and can't be changed.I like my Gnome screen and don't want to move to KDE.

Have Login/restart/suspend in the upper right corner. Alt-f2 gets me to root login, except my 11.04 root login and password isn't accepted, so can't get in a root. I think that it is the Gnome GUI, as I have seen something about installing Compiz etc. I could just reinstall 11.04 or 10.10 for that matter, but hate to give up. So, if I could find out how to bring up the termainal, and then how to get to where I could add compiz or something??

View 8 Replies View RelatedWhen I upgraded to 11.04 and decided to give Gnome 3 a chance I was stuck with a windows 2000 (or Redmond like) theme. I have since been able to change the theme in the desktop environment however the Login Screen still maintains the Windows 2000 like theme. I have extensively Googled how to change this, but I keep coming up empty handed. Does anyone have any ideas of how to change the Login Screen theme.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI reinstalled and forgot how I added a panel to my second screen, cause when you add a panel you choose left right top or bottom, but no option for second screen... finally I added a new panel, then right click on the new panel> properties, then unchecked "expand" then was able to move the new panel to second monitor, then set to whatever side and recheck "expand" then it sticks to the second screen, then add to panel, and select window list, then all new windows will be shown on the appropriate panel/screen

Clearlooks. So, I tried upgrading to Maverick, thinking it would default the login screen to the new themes. No such luck.

I am using ubuntu 10.10. I was using ppa:ricotz/testing for gnome shell.
View 7 Replies View RelatedYesterday I attempt to use update-manager to do a distribution update. all was going good. i went to the kitchen to get a coffee and returned to a black screen with no cursor. the install couldnot have finished as it was still downloading updates i believe.
on reboot gnome did not respond so my last resort was to use kde for the time being. by running update-manager through kde I successfully updated to ubuntu 10.10. After completion of the update i restarted and gnome still had a non respinsive black screen on login.
Kde is still working fine.
Or at least how can I completely reinstall gnome.
I have searched long and hard for an answer to this one, only to discover that this is apparently a long-standing, unresolved bug. Therefore, I am looking for some sort of workaround that resolves the issue without having to revise my desktop layout in the process.I am running a dual monitor setup through nVidia's TwinView setting. The primary monitor is 1600x900, secondary is 1440x900, and the secondary is placed to the right of primary. I am running Lucid with the compiz window manager.
On the primary monitor's portion of the screen area, I have a right- and bottom-side panel, and the secondary monitor has only a bottom-side panel. When maximizingapplications on the primary monitor, the bottom-side panel area is taken into account and the vertical resize ends there. However, the application maximizes underneath the right-side panel to the monitor's full horizontal dimension and thereby becomes partially obscured. The issue, as best I can tell, is that the window manager does not recognise a panel that is officially positioned in the center of the X screen as being a boundary despite it being linked to the right edge of the monitor, which does qualify as a boundary.
Causing the application to maximize over the panel is not an acceptable solution, as it denies me access to the utilities I have set up there. The so-called "autohide" is also unacceptable, as that simply causes the panel to drift onto the secondary monitor and then enter a loop where it flips back and forth between monitors when I attempt to access it.
(Using Ver. 10.04-lucid lynx) This is because, at random, Gnome environment will have some kind of problem, leaving me with a black screen, like the terminal but not it, where I can enter my password and that's just about all. There seems to be no way to enter the graphical linux environment. I was forced to wipe the hard drive clean twice because of this and both times I reinstalled lucid lynx.

I've just installed 11.04 and I have switched to the classic gnome. When I enable my second monitor the gnome panel moves to the 2nd monitor, though I would like to have it on my primary. It used to be that I could hold alt and move the panel to any edge of any screen. This doesn't work anymore. How to move the classic gnome panels?

I'm having this problem with Ubuntu 9.10, it has happened the three times I have tried to install it.

After upgrading and rebooting, the flashing login screen appears and it is not possible to use the GDM.
I have tried to install KDM and it works, but when trying to load gnome I get the blinking bars again.
I have also tried this (and got the same problem); installing the Nvidia driver (manufacturer), installing the Nvidia driver (repositories) and installing no screen driver.
I think the problem is with GNOME, and not with the graphics card.
Now I have installed windows xp :-/, for the first time in a whole year, cause it is not possible for me to use Ubuntu 9.10 at all.
