Ubuntu :: QuickSynergy And Unity Toolbars ?
Jun 5, 2011
I often run two of my computers, a dual-booting Ubuntu 11.04/Windows Vista desktop and a laptop running exclusively Ubuntu 11.04, side-by-side. To easily switch between the two, I use a program called Synergy, with a frontend called QuickSynergy. The program allows you to simply move your mouse between the two computer screens, and then the keyboard and mouse of the host can be used on the guest. My problem is, when I simply want to show the Unity menu on the left side of the right machine, I usually end up going back over to the left (host) machine. I have to move my mouse very carefully to get to the single edge pixel that triggers the menu. Is there any way to fix this? When I use Synergy when the host is booted into Windows, I can set up dead corners, which is pretty much what I want. The frontend on Windows is called Synergy+.

I often use the option in Chromium to create 'application shortcuts'. These are instances of Chromium that make a website look more like an app by not including most of Chromium's toolbars. I use it for gmail and google docs and spreadsheets and calendar. In 11.04 I have set up Desktop launchers and copied them across to the Launcher (what an odd way to add something to the launcher, why no right-click 'add launcher' option?)
The problem is that the launcher thinks all these apps are chromium (which they are really, but I would like them to be seen as separate apps). If I minimize my gmail window, a little triangle appears next to the chromium icon, not the gmail icon. To get the window back, I have to click on the Chromium icon. Clicking on the gmail icon launches a new instance of it (also tied to the Chromium icon).

I'm using Quicksynergy on my desktop (Ubuntu 10.04) computer as the server and Synergy on my Laptop (Windows XP) which is right beside my desktop.Everything works well for a while, but randomly seems to stop working. When I look into the problem, it seems that its with Quicksynergy on my desktop.I find that I have to quit Quicksynergy and open the system resources application to kill the Synergy daemon (or whatever it is) that Quicksynergy uses.Restarting Quicksynergy after killing the daemon fixes the problem as my laptop always reconnects perfectly fine.Does anyone else have this problem in Ubuntu? I'd like to get this fixed so I don't have to keep killing the synergy process and restarting Synergy.

I've got a Ubuntu 10.10 installed on an Acer Revo 3700 and it's attached to a 32" Toshiba TV via a HDMI cable, but unfortunately I can't see the toolbars at the top and the bottom of the screen.
I've tried changing the resolution and refresh rate but nothing seems to work.
Unfortunately this problem is rendering my new PC almost useless as I can't navigate around the toolbars.

I turned on my computer today and logged in only to find discover that both toolbars on the top and bottom of my screen have disappeared. This is problematic as it has become impossible for me to connect to the internet without the wireless toolbar at the top of the screen, and as well I no longer have the ability to select different windows without alt+tabbing. I didn't modify my system in any way to the best of my knowledge, nor was I messing around with my desktop config. Luckily I can still access my applications (including the Terminal) by right clicking, but it's still a less than ideal setup.

With my Kubuntu Hardy install there are plenty of settings I can change in Kaffeine but with Ubuntu Lucid I cannot adjust the brightness or add/remove items on the toolbars.
Is there some other way to change these settings ?
Kaffeine is excellent for watching and recording Dvb/T television (multiple channels etc).

I've been researching on how to fully decorate the window borders and toolbars but I can't seem to get a clear as day answer. The threads I've found that have plenty of information are quite old (usually 2006), and others lead to things I already had tested with, such as Gnome Color Chooser. GCC was very nice, but it didn't really do everything I wanted. For one, I could only change the colors of the Main Menu, but not other menus such as the menus within Firefox (those are still grey with white letters and an orange highlight when hovering). It also wouldn't change the colors for the factory clock in the taskbar without messing up a bunch of other things. The list goes on.
What's even more confusing and the reason why I haven't begun is the following. Some people mention GTK+2, others Metacity, and others COmpiz and others Emerald. I know what COmpiz and Emerald are, but I don't understand how they're related (or unrelated) to the other 2 terms. Some threads mention how Emerald offers better functions than the rest, others just talk about editing Metacity themes. In short, I'm completely lost in the terminology. I do understand that the editing to get the exact look I want has to be done by hand, and I'm willing to do that. It's a bit pointless though if I'm stuck with the terminology I've mentioned. I want to know which themes I can search and be able to edit them to the looks I want.

I would like to setup fedora for fullscreen, touchscreen, noexit application. So whenever you'll boot or restart the application will automatically starts. I thing there are these step required:
1. autologin
2. start fvwm after login instead of default DM - gnome
3. run application
how to autologin in fedora but it still shows that fedora gui login screen for 10 seconds and then it logs in. My problem that I dont know how to start fvwm and configure it to empty desktop (no toolbars no nothing) instead of gnome.

1. I didn't like the icon theme and changed it to Ubuntu Mono Light. But is there a way to get the Min/Max/Close buttons to how they are in Radiance when maximized, or is that dependant on something else?
2. Is there a way to disable the Unity dock, but not the Unity feature where the Min/Max/Close go into the command bar?

Just moved to Ubuntu 11.04 with unity and only have one problem...For most of my desktop needs I prefer to have the Unity Launcher up all the time (fullscreen apps don't cover it), and have set this option with ccsm.
However, when I watch mythtv, it is also under the launcher (and the top panel as well). How can I force mythtv to cover the launcher?
What I really need is a keyboard shortcut to hide the launcher, but the only shortcut is for "show launcher". (I guess the devs assumed everyone would want it hidden by default).
This, by the way is not my usual way for viewing mythtv. I have a projector attached to the desktop PC and it doesn't get a Unity Launcher by default (in Twinview), so no probs. However, occasionally I want to watch something on my computer screen, and that is when this issue arises.

I'm helping a friend with his netbook, and he is used to the regular netbook edition before the unity-style. The small netbookscreen is just not good for this new appbar on the left side (it's one of the old eee-pc's).
None of us like that solution, and I wonder if its possible to move the bar on the bottom side of the screen so it will be a bit more Windows 7-ish? I've searched and looked everywhere so I just have to ask.

I just installed the netbook remix 10.10 on my laptop. I have been using Unity and I would much rather prefer a standard GNOME desktop. I know there was a way to change the netbook interface to a standard GNOME one on the 8.04 remix. Anyone know if there's a way to do it in 10.10?

I installed the Unity Desktop Env. to play around with it on my wubi installation of Ubuntu 10.10. I have the log in screen disabled as well as the grub menu so it launches right into Ubuntu. I logged out and logged back in under Unity and could move the mouse but nothing would happen. I have gnome-panels disabled as well so alt f2 wont work even in my gnome DE. By disabling the log in screen and the grub menu have I painted myself into a corner so to speak and made this installation completely unrecoverable?

Alright so i have been waiting for the release of 11.04 for quite some time now. And when i finally get it, and i boot from my liveCD, there is no Unity desktop interface. It's weird, because i can boot in other computers, and it'll work. This tells me there is something specific about my computer as to why it won't work. I can't seem to figure it out. I've heard people say to switch to classic mode, and that'll fix it. But i don't even know how to switch to classic mode.

I recently update my ubuntu to 11.04 and try some compiz tricks but while i am testing i close unity somehow and now on i cannot start it again. Although i checked it in compiz manager it does not work, also some other new features do not work too like grid feature. I also try to start it by terminal but it says "it is already working". Is there any solution to start unity and its features again?
edition: I also realized that no other compiz settings effects my ubuntu. I change its settings but no effect!

I feel these pictures illustrate an issue that should to be addressed: What appears to be happening is that when I try to switch desktops it will select the window I have open and try to move it at the same time. As you can see from the images, as soon as I select a viewpoint, compiz's wobbly windows stay in their warped positions while the application is still completely operational. It's quite funny actually, but is also a problem. I'm using Ubuntu 11.04 with Unity and Compiz's wobbly windows enabled. I should note that my Unity Panel on the left side of the screen often freezes and will not auto-hide as I have set it to do, which is an unrelated issue, I believe.
I guess I'm wondering if this is some sort of bug that should be posted and where to post it, whether this is a Unity or Compiz issue.
