I installed g++ using package manager and support libraries using sudo apt-get install build-essential cmd, but I'm not able to compile a socket code. It gives me the following error:

I'm working with a dual-boot laptop running Ubuntu 10.0/Windows 7 and a Debian 5 VPS while the OS's shouldn't have much impact on my question.
What I would like to do is create a html page that I can upload to my VPS which lists all of the files/folders on my local 2TB hard drive (Specifically media such as Movies, Music, TV Shows...). The media obviously will not reside on the server, but I would like to at least have a list which will allow me to select, for instance, a bands artist so that it redirects me to the albums in the directory below.
Ultimately, I'm looking for Open Directory Browsing without actually having the media on my server. I have been attempting to create something to this effect using lynx, however, I'm not sure if it can be done with this command or if it's even possible for that matter.
I have presently a (working) boot dedicated partition, where grub stuff resides, but I want to change it to a common "/boot" folder in the root partition (in a different hdd). For some reason I can't do it. The first thing I did was to copy all the things that are in the boot partition to a boot folder on the root partition. After that, I tried: grub-install /dev/hdc1 (which is odd but it's where the root partition actually is)
When I did it from the linux I have installed on my hdd, it actually did something, I don't remember all the output (except that there was something about it not being able to access hda, which is oddly the dvdrom), but it didn't work. From a live CD, the same command (grub-install /dev/hdc1) is answered with: Could not find device for /boot: Not found or not a block device. From grub's own prompt, the things are more or less the same. First of all, it does not find stage1, even though I did copy the content from the boot partition to a boot folder in the root partition.
I tried to proceed, anyway, with root (hd1,0) and setup (hd1,0) (which is /dev/hdc1, according with the "geometry" info given by grub). "Root" is accepted, but "setup" is answered with: Checking if "/boot/grub/stage1" exists... no Checking if "/grub/stage1" exists... no Error 2: Bad file or directory type But the files are there. I can't "cat" the menu.lst from grub though, unlike with the actual working boot partition. The same error message. From the terminal, however, it's all there. I tried with /dev/hdc1 both mounted and unmounted, the same message. So, basically I have two questions, I guess:
1 - can I really do this sort of thing running a linux installed on a hdd, rather than a live cd, or is the live cd preferable for some reason?
2 - what am I missing?
(A note that may worth making is that I'm using the soon-to-be deprecated grub version, 0.9 or something, not grub2. I think it shouldn't be a problem since I've installed the system with the old version to begin with, but that may be irrelevant, I don't really know)

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am new to Linux and I wanted to setup a dedicated game server on my notebook.
I've installed Ubuntu 9.04. I than created a directory named /home/phlex/kfserver. I downloaded the application binary from Steam. I changed the file permission with chmod +x hldsupdatetool.bin and now the file attributes are -rwxr-xr-x.
The problem is when I try to run the binary file. If I type ./hldsupdatetool.bin I get an error message "-bash: ./hldsupdatetool.bin: No such file or directory. It seems the OS can't find the file. I've downloaded the file several times thinking it may have been corrupt but it's not. I can delete the file, I can rename it and so the file is there. Sometimes Linux can be aggravating to use.

To get things started off I did $ gnome-open /home/user (my name where user is) and it opens my user home directory. But when I get to adding downloads to the end of it it gives me this $ gnome-open /home/user/downloads Error showing url: Error stating file '/home/User/downloads': No such file or directory As far as I can tell there is most obviously a downloads directory in my user folder. I also get this error when trying to open any other home folder, like music, or pictures.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI created a USB Live disk and installed Fedora 12 to my Asus EEE 1005HA (12 inch screen). The machine boots fine, but Hardware Graphics acceleration is not working correctly. If I stop X11, and type "Xorg -configure", the Xorg utility recieves a segmentation fault and exits, and the resulting xorg.conf file does not work correctly. The error is "(EE) open /dev/fb0: No such file or directory". All the correct packages are installed, and there is no logical reason why it is failing. The rest of the hardware on the EEE works fine.

I've booted the Slackware disk # 1 and unchecked everything except the libraries category and installed them. I rebooted and it still says this. I get this same error before I put the disk in and rebooted to install ALL libraries. I really need help. BTW, I can't load KDE.I found a pkg manager already installed called "slackpkg". But I really need help on this library issue!! I uninstalled it (slapt-get) anyway, so forget that!

i am able to try ubuntu and everything works fine until i try to install. the menu comes up to the first page where it tells you to plug in your machine and make sure there is enough disk space and network connectivity. when i hit next on this page the mouse icon changes but the next page never loads. the longest i let it hang there was 2 hours. ive tried multiple times with the same result.

Tonight I installed ubuntu 10.10 (32 bit) on an external usb harddrive with a dvd I burned and I used my older desktop. I disconnected all internal and external drives first so everything had to be put on the usb drive I selected (only option available). I used the option to load extra software, use the entire hard drive, and let the software do it's thing. I basically had no options where to put things and it didn't have much choice.
When I boot the usb drive on my laptop (win 7 64 bit) by telling the bios to boot to it first... I get an error: modprobe: FATAL Could not load /lib/modules 2.6.35-22 generic modules No such file or directory. This message appears twice and then it does boot into ubuntu and seems to work fine. I'm new to this OS so that is an uneducated guess but the things I have done seem to be working. So exactly what is this error referring too? Is there a way to fix the problem or do I just ignore it.

I suspect the disk manager pysdm that i had just installed today and it had crash during the previous session. The /etc/fstab file does not exist anymore and i cant rename the fstab.bak because the disk is read-only even for my root user

I installed the latest Gimp beta and it worked fine but then I couldn't open it. Most of the days backups going through without any issue. But occasionally (monthly 3-4 time) it fails with the following error. But if we re-run the backup it goes through without any issue. There is no space issue at all. Almost 200 GB is free always is anyone experienced same error? How to solve it?
