I am having a weird problem here. The open programs are closing secretly without giving any indication or issuing error. For example I open couple terminal and some minutes later I look at my screen, boom they are not there anymore. This issue is not just limited to terminals, other gui apps suffer from the same thing. Does anyone know if any program or service would do such a thing?. I am scratching my head here to figure out why that is the case It just started happening today.
I tried Kubuntu and it have a nice function that not closing all programs when shutting down ("not closing" explicitly) . So if I start the Kubuntu the next day, all the program will appear in the same state. in my Ubuntu, when pressing "shut-down", a message box pops asking : "Are you sure you want to close all programs and shut down the computer?" and I press "yes" (cause you are not leaving me any choice! [the other option is "cancel"] ).
I'm new to Conky, and have shamelessly copied from the many other conkyrc files posted here! I have Conky set to start up with a 15 second delay, and it does. But frequently when I close another programme (eg Firefox) Conky disappears. It's still running, and if I log out or reboot I see it for a flash, and it appears OK again when the system starts up.

I'm running Xubuntu 10.10 via USB on a Dell Latitude D505.Wireless card is a Netgear WPN111 and I'm using ndiswrapper to make it work.
My problem is this:when I open any web browser and try to navigate to a page, the whole system freezes for a few min before crashing to desktop.Using Task Manager during this time reveals that processor usage jumps to 100% and stays there until the program closes.I've tried Xubuntu on another, faster machine and it was fine. From this I conclude that it's related to the hardware, and I think it may be some hardware protection feature operating.
I have changed nothing about the configuration of my checkgmail except for the icons. And yet, whenever I click on the subject of an email, it gives me a 404 error. When I use the links (delete, spam, archive, mark read) it does what it is supposed to do, but it does not allow me to view the content of a message. Does anybody have any idea of what could be causing this strange behavior? Gnome. 10.04. x64.
I have a tar file but when I try to install it is giving error. Here's what I did. Code: tar xjvf live.tar.bz2 cd live ./configure bash: ./configure: No such file or directory I have build-essential installed
I have a Ubuntu 10.04 desktop VM that is running torrent software, and it is saving the files to a samba share (which is actually the host it is running on). I have also tested from another Ubuntu box on the network and it experiences the same problem.
The problem I am having is that any torrent client on a Ubuntu machine or VM can't save to the samba share, but a WinXP torrent client can download the same torrent and save to the share with no problem.
I created a public share, and the problem seems to be that I cannot edit files after I create them. It seems that samba is ignoring the create mask and creating files as rw-r--r-- instead of rw-rw-rw-
I even tried adding the "unix extensions = yes" option and that didn't seem to work either.
Code: [global] # map any unknown username to nobody so login succeeds, don't forget to run: # smbpasswd -an nobody # so that it will work!
I have been looking for a while now, but I keep getting 403's for maps but not for files... So if you go to http://gmod.ws/ you get the error but if you go to http://gmod.ws/index.php you don't.I don't see where the problem is.We're running a CentOS 5.5 box.
Got the Ubuntu 11.04 disk.Installed it about an hour ago using wubi. There is no indication of anything installing anywhere. What gives? Keep in mind that I know next to nothing about the workings of a computer.
I'm trying to connect to a webdav server with very poor luck. My preference would be to mount it to my file system, but simply connecting with Cadaver would be fine too.
I've tried:
Code: mparks@mparks:~$ sudo mount -t davfs https://<host>:<port>/<path> /media/webdrives/<mount-dir> [sudo] password for mparks: Please enter the username to authenticate with server
I have an ipod shufle 2nd gen, and I have seemed to upset the format. I tried to format it in nautilus, and it gave me the: 'fat 32 format not supported' error.
now ubuntu won't recognize it, and the ipod shuffle is giving me a broken software error. I have a backup of the ipod shuffle, but how do I get ubuntu to recognize it so I can format it properly?
I am trying to learn it, understand it, and maybe even become proficient with it (one day... ). After trying a few different flavors, I settled on Fedora XFCE, and installed v14 (i686) in a dual boot setting with Windows. I am running it on an HP laptop.I have had an issue ever since I installed a rather large list of updates a few days ago. One of which was a Linux kernel update to 2.6.35.6-45.fc14.i686 (not really sure if that is significant, but I noticed the issue after selecting this kernel version in the boot menu). Now, anytime I try to add software, or run the update utility I get the error message:Quote:You have failed to provide correct authentication. Please check any passwords or account settings.
More Details:Failed to obtain authentication. There was no dialog to provide my password. I do understand there are alternatives to installing and updating software using yum, and I have been doing that a bit, however I would really like to understand why I am receiving this error. I have seen a few related posts as well as a some similar issues in a bug report, and testing session:bugzilla.redhat.com - 638344General a similar gpk-application issuecannot use Add/Remove software through VNCMy questions are:Is this a bug with one of the updates I downloaded? Is there a way to revert the changes from that update, or do I need to reinstall Fedora? Is this an issue with the User account I created? Is there a general set of options I should enable for myself as the primary user?
I have prepared a script which will login to each server and search for a keyword.I want output on same machine from where m running script. When i try to run command on any machine.. It works well.
Ubuntu 10.10 does not appear to have an indication of progress when the system checks HDs on start up. In previous versions - at least back to 8 - I think there was either a progress bar or % reading to give an indication of progress of the scan / check .Is it possible to switch this back on in 10.10?Also how do you control the frequency of disk checks on start up?
The attached log file includes two crashes/reboots within the past day or so I have recently started trying to set up / manage a Linux (Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS) server in our data center (all other servers are Windows boxes). The server periodically hangs and becomes unresponsive and I'm at a loss to find anything in any log that indicates a specific cause. Sometimes it's up for hours, sometimes days (14 days at longest). Plugging a monitor in to the machine after a hang shows nothing at all. In an effort to troubleshoot the problem we've tried disabling APIC, more out of "educated desperation" than anything else. Unfortunately we are limited in some of the troubleshooting we can do, as we have a single client website hosted on the box (the reason we set it up) so anything that involves significant downtime is a problem.
As this is our first attempt at setting up a linux box, we are using a "well equipped" desktop grade machine but not what I would call "server grade" hardware. This is a standalone box, not a VPS. We are using a hardware, not software, RAID array and have plenty of memory in the box.
Caveats / Background:
I am relatively new to Linux in general. I spend much more time writing code than managing servers. I'm comfortable with working on the box, but I'm not really a sysadmin guy. I'm comfortable with the command line but have more experience with OS X (BSD). I am unsure of all of the tools / information / Logs that may be available, though I try to be thorough in checking what I do know. I did not physically configure the hardware so I'm not sure of all of the specs but I can get any info I need to troubleshoot. I may be skipping very basic steps or missing obvious places to look for information without knowing it.
A little more detail:
Real memory: 8GB Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS Hardware RAID 10 Managing sites with Webmin version 1.550
Server is in a remote data center. Hands on-troubleshooting is difficult. We have attempted two Linux setups at this point. The first was on a hardware config identical to this one, but with no actual pieces of hardware reused. That attempt was using CentOS and we were attempting to set up CPanel. We scrapped that install because of this same problem (periodic crashing / hanging). The second attempt (this one) is showing the same behavior. The only thing I can really see in common are the hardware configuration (though CentOS & Ubuntu may have more in common than I think).
The box will run fine for hours, days, or even weeks, and then just stop responding entirely. I check all of the logs I know to check (primarily messages, syslog and kern.log) but I don't see anything that seems like an error to me. I do see lines that I don't understand that may or may not be problems, such as:
Code:
rsyslogd: [origin software="rsyslogd" swVersion="4.2.0" x-pid="814" x-info="http://www.rsyslog.com"] rsyslogd was HUPed, type 'lightweight'.
Most of our syslog entries seem to be logs of webmin related cron jobs running. My gut tells me that there is possibly some component in our configuration Linux does not like or needs a driver update (maybe the raid card for example), but I'm unsure of how to do more to track down or determine what that might be. Guess and check is expensive. Another thought I've had is that one or more of the cron jobs that are running are tripping something up, but it doesn't appear to be reproducible on demand and, again, I'm at a loss on how to test that theory any further. The same cron job does not appear to be running each time the server goes down. This is a portion the log just prior to our last hang:
Code:
Aug 8 11:00:01 linhost01 CRON[10771]: (www-data) CMD ([ -x /usr/lib/cgi-bin/awstats.pl -a -f /etc/awstats/awstats.conf -a -r /var/log/apache2/access.log ] && /usr/lib/cgi-bin/awstats.pl -config=awstats -update >/dev/null)
I have downloaded Ubuntu from a CD and burned it using Infrarecorder. When I tried to boot my netbook(Samsung N 140 with Win XP OS preloaded), it gives error message .i have tried the process several times and spent lot of time but to no avail.
Have a look at the image. i hav two users ,one is apoorv(administrator) and other is others(ordinary user). i want to restrict the ordinary user from accessing the files directory as shown in picture. so i tried the chmod command with o-rw option. but its not working ..i hav enabled auto mount for all partitions at boot time.
I had my server going pretty good. Two sites being hosted. Wilmingtoncoc and Mikealrhughes. Last night we had Thunderstorms and Tornadoes come through. While I was out Tornado chasing. We lost power here for an instant and back on. When I came in the server was off. So I booted it back up. The mikealrhughes site is still working good. The Wilmingtoncoc site is giving me a Database read error, it is a WordPress site. Also I can't log into the Server using SSH. Where do I start to repair the problem? Do I reinstall SSH if so what is the command I use? Then how do I solve the WordPRess Database problem? Also when I try and issue a command from the Server with sudo in front of it I get an error message that says - sudo: must be setuid root - whatever that means. I couldn't find that in any of the books I have.
I am trying to setup ipv6 lan network.using Ubuntu 10.04 as DNS server.Able to resolve domain names from dns server itself but can't resolve from client machine (backtrack5). I have tried to flush iptables but still no effect; dig gives servfail error.I can ping both machines from one another.
I installed SLES 11 SP1 jeOS on my system. It is booting up properly. But when I tried to boot it up with "TrustedGrub", it comes up up to login level. When I given the login name and password, it shows an error "Error in service module".Then i couldn't login.
am running centos5.3 on a virtual machine and was trying to do some basic hardening and part of it i had to modify the pam.d/system-auth file and from then i am getting a fatal error whenever i try to connect via ssh using putty i am not at all able to login the server with any of the accounts even root also.I am scared unknowingly did i lock the system???how to resolve this issue?
Today, I finished assembling my dream computer. I can boot it into the BIOS, and I checked that everything was working correctly through there. Anyway, I attempted to transfer the hard drive from this computer to that one. This computer is a Dell (blech) Optiplex GX280 with an Intel processor and integrated graphics. The new one has an AMD Phenom II processor with an ATI card and an ASRock motherboard (drastically different machines, I know...) When I try to boot, GRUB gives me an error message that says something like:
Code: blah whatever cannot find /dev/disk/by-uuid/372de761-9577-48be-ba19-c6b2890cb229 Did I do something wrong installing the hard drive? Or is this a problem that is going to happen no matter how hard I try to make it not happen? If the second is true, will it help if I wipe the disk and reinstall Ubuntu on the new computer?
P.S. I know similar threads about transferring hard disks have been posted, but no thread has mentioned this error.
