Got the Ubuntu 11.04 disk.Installed it about an hour ago using wubi. There is no indication of anything installing anywhere. What gives? Keep in mind that I know next to nothing about the workings of a computer.
View 5 RepliesUbuntu 10.10 does not appear to have an indication of progress when the system checks HDs on start up. In previous versions - at least back to 8 - I think there was either a
progress bar or % reading to give an indication of progress of the scan / check .Is it possible to switch this back on in 10.10?Also how do you control the frequency of disk checks on start up?
I had an installation of Ubuntu under windows via wubi, after an update last week it wouldn't boot up at all, I tried everything I could find about how to fix grub, none of which worked, after looking at a working installation of Ubuntu with wubi I realised that my root.disk file had dissapeared.
I gave up and decided to get rid of windows all together, and now have a fresh 'proper' install of Ubuntu, but that root.disk file has turned up in a file called 'found'.
Is there any way I can mount that file in ubuntu to retrive the documents etc that I thought I had lost?
I wanted to install ubuntu via wubi, but i had to format my partitions (can't do it on wubi ) so i used a crappy program(i don't remember the name) to get rid of Backtrack4 , because i wanted windows kept for my mom.So, that was the sorry, i've ended up with a GRUB error 22, and a Backtrack4 CD stuck in my DVD-rom.So my question is: Can somewone tell me how to fix error 22? (i've seen some methods online, but i obviously can't put a Windows CD in my DVD rom because the Backtrack4 DVD is stuck in there.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI installed wubi with the lowest amount of virtual disk not realising what it referred to. i have looked at the help files for increasing the virtual disk - lvpm is not compatible with the latest wubi. I have downloaded wubi-add-virtual disk but when i paste the command into terminal it says that cannot open it.

What exactly is meant my this? Does this mean it is an easier way to install the dual boot with Windows? (I am using Windows-7 on a new PC.) Or does it mean it will install Ubuntu under Windows? I assumed it meant the latter.
In any case, I downloaded it - a mere 1024K, scanned it and ran it. I get a stubborn error box with the message:

And that box will not go away - no matter what I press, including the [X] button in the upper corner, the box reappears. I had to go into Process Explorer to kill pyrun.exe and its parent, pyl5E39.tmp.exe before the [Cancel] button would close it for good.
I could not find doc on this so I don't know what it really wants as a prerequisite to running wubi.
Since the partition of windows7 (C: ) where wubi was installed was too small, I decided to reinstall wubi into another larger partition (E: ), keeping the old root.disk. Sadly when I replaced the root.disk ubuntu cannot boot, the loader says that there is no root.disk file, although it's there... I guess there is some kind of checksum about the virtual disk toward the loader is poiting... So how can I have my old ubuntu installation back?? I still have the old root.disk.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI decided it was time to reinstall Windows 7 because it became increasingly slow. I know that there's a different solution to solve this problem, but as a user I'm just more satisfied with the noob friendliness of Windows. However, I know that it has its drawbacks so I had a dual boot setup with Wubi (30GB). My old configuration was as follows:
C: partition of size ~80GB with Windows 7 x64 installed
D: partition of size ~400GB with data and a wubi ubuntu at D:/ubuntu
So what I did was this:
- Backup all my personal files and D:/ubuntu on a external hdd
- Wipe the partitions using the windows installer
- Create a C: of 100GB and a D: of 380GB
- install windows 7 x64 on the C: partition
Now I would like to restore my backup of the old D:/ubuntu to a working dual boot system. I realize I may have missed some opportunities and the data may be gone, but I only found out about that when it was too late. I have tried installing wubi, and replacing the new ubuntu folder with the old one, but this did not work.

I have also tried replacing only the root.disk file, with the same result. I searched for other people's solutions, but they did not seem to work in my case.
I worked everyday during 1.5 years on a Wubi installation of Ubuntu 8.10.
Before quitting my job I have made a simple copy of the root.disk file, thinking I could restore it easily later.
Now I would restore this system on a Virtual Machine (with Virtual Box)
Have you got an idea how i could do this??

i started ubuntu from 9.04 now using 10.10 on my laptop. problem started when my laptop motherboard got bad beyond repair, and i had installed ubuntu 10.10 on it along with windows 7 (grub, dual boot). now i have pc running windows 7 and installed ubuntu 10.10 using wubi. i want all the settings of my laptop ubuntu 10.10 (programs installed, themes, softwares other configurations etc) to be transferred to this new ubuntu (installed using wubi) on my pc. how to do that? i have attached my laptop hard disk to my pc and am able to boot that installation on my pc, but now i have decided to remove laptop hard disk and use the same settings on pc hard disk.
View 6 Replies View RelatedThe attached log file includes two crashes/reboots within the past day or so I have recently started trying to set up / manage a Linux (Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS) server in our data center (all other servers are Windows boxes). The server periodically hangs and becomes unresponsive and I'm at a loss to find anything in any log that indicates a specific cause. Sometimes it's up for hours, sometimes days (14 days at longest). Plugging a monitor in to the machine after a hang shows nothing at all. In an effort to troubleshoot the problem we've tried disabling APIC, more out of "educated desperation" than anything else. Unfortunately we are limited in some of the troubleshooting we can do, as we have a single client website hosted on the box (the reason we set it up) so anything that involves significant downtime is a problem.
As this is our first attempt at setting up a linux box, we are using a "well equipped" desktop grade machine but not what I would call "server grade" hardware. This is a standalone box, not a VPS. We are using a hardware, not software, RAID array and have plenty of memory in the box.
Caveats / Background:
I am relatively new to Linux in general. I spend much more time writing code than managing servers. I'm comfortable with working on the box, but I'm not really a sysadmin guy. I'm comfortable with the command line but have more experience with OS X (BSD). I am unsure of all of the tools / information / Logs that may be available, though I try to be thorough in checking what I do know. I did not physically configure the hardware so I'm not sure of all of the specs but I can get any info I need to troubleshoot. I may be skipping very basic steps or missing obvious places to look for information without knowing it.
A little more detail:
Real memory: 8GB
Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS
Hardware RAID 10
Managing sites with Webmin version 1.550
Server is in a remote data center. Hands on-troubleshooting is difficult. We have attempted two Linux setups at this point. The first was on a hardware config identical to this one, but with no actual pieces of hardware reused. That attempt was using CentOS and we were attempting to set up CPanel. We scrapped that install because of this same problem (periodic crashing / hanging). The second attempt (this one) is showing the same behavior. The only thing I can really see in common are the hardware configuration (though CentOS & Ubuntu may have more in common than I think).
The box will run fine for hours, days, or even weeks, and then just stop responding entirely. I check all of the logs I know to check (primarily messages, syslog and kern.log) but I don't see anything that seems like an error to me. I do see lines that I don't understand that may or may not be problems, such as:

Most of our syslog entries seem to be logs of webmin related cron jobs running. My gut tells me that there is possibly some component in our configuration Linux does not like or needs a driver update (maybe the raid card for example), but I'm unsure of how to do more to track down or determine what that might be. Guess and check is expensive. Another thought I've had is that one or more of the cron jobs that are running are tripping something up, but it doesn't appear to be reproducible on demand and, again, I'm at a loss on how to test that theory any further. The same cron job does not appear to be running each time the server goes down. This is a portion the log just prior to our last hang:

I am having a weird problem here. The open programs are closing secretly without giving any indication or issuing error. For example I open couple terminal and some minutes later I look at my screen, boom they are not there anymore. This issue is not just limited to terminals, other gui apps suffer from the same thing. Does anyone know if any program or service would do such a thing?. I am scratching my head here to figure out why that is the case It just started happening today.

The Problem is that I have never seen this error message before in the way it behaves. I have seen a "No Disk" error before but it doesn't prompt the message constantly after clicking cancel or OK.
What could be causing this? I tried this on another machine and it worked fine.
Is it possible to increase the disk space for a Wubi installation?

View 9 Replies View RelatedWhat is the easiest and/or safest way to migrate my Wubi 10.04 install to a full install? Currently, my Dell XPS M1530 is currently dual-booting Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and Windows Vista Home Premium, and I've decided after using Windows a total of around 4 hours over the past 6 months that I can probably let it go. So, I don't need Windows anymore and I believe I'm ready for a full install of Ubuntu. Though, I probably will wait for 11.04 to come out first.
A few ways I've thought of already are: 1) Find an external hard drive to put the Wubi files on. 2) Upload files to an storage website. 3) Temporarily put the Wubi files onto another computer (Windows). All these meaning I would then wipe my harddrive and install Ubuntu from a CD. And by "files", I mean Documents, Pictures, Downloads, etc.
EDIT: deleting all my applications, because OpenOffice.org won't reinstall on my computer due to dependency issues while attempting to install LibreOffice. So a fresh install would be nice.

2. in ubuntu 11.04 I found "main menu" that shows a lot of applications. Some ticked some not but, when I double click one a seemingly useless window opens.
What use is this menu for, how can it be used productively as it shows all available programs.
I have wubi and downloaded server tar in same directory, however, when I start wubi it downloads destop tar from web and than fails with permission denied.
Are there parameters to pass to wubi to direct it to source?
Wubi can't retrieve the netbook versions... any fix for this? I really don't want to use anything else but wubi. I used it on my desktop, and it was straightforward and I really prefer it (it's pretty much the only reason i'm putting linux on here lol)

I have two questions:
1) Will this install in the Wubi directory? (c://ubuntu) or do i have to partition it first? If i do, please tell me a link how because the one i followed on the wiki said it didn't support 10.04 wubi. I would prefer to upgrade the Wubi install though
2) Will upgrading remove any of my user files? I installed themes i want to keep, and i wouldn't want to loose them.

I recently downloaded xubuntu 11.04. I run it live from USB it runs fine. Now i want to install it. I want to install it with wubi because in this case their less chance of data loss and easier to use. When i put all the downloaded files(inside downloaded iso) and run wubi(that came with iso)int the same folder it tries to download set up from internet. this is the error. why it is not working with files in that folder.OK I try to install this this from xubuntu bootable USB using wubi it runs better install it runs for a minute(installs files) but at the end of installation same error occur says can't connect to internet.
