Ubuntu Networking :: Close/Open Port 21 Using Command Line?
Mar 12, 2011
I would like to Close/Open port 21 using command line. I have an FTP server and I don't want to have the port open all the time. I need only two hours by week to be open port 21 from outside to inside. So I need to know the command line for opening and closing the port 21 then I will implement this in a script into cron.hourly.
I've recently been taking a look at my router settings and I've realized i have my vnc port open for some reason. I don't know how or why it got opened because I've only used vnc within my private lan. Anyway, the problem is I couldn't figure out how to close that port on my router, so I just uninstalled all the vnc software from my computer so it wouldn't act like a vnc server for anybody trying to access it from the outside. So, effectively, I cannot vnc into my computer from outside my private lan, but when i port scan my public ip, the vnc port still appears open.
I'm wondering if there's something i'm missing. I'm sure it must be something in the router that I haven't figured out... something that's keeping port 5900 open.
I am using Fedora 13 64bit. My eclipse program starts a server on port 9050 but I shutdown the program, eclipse fails to properly shutdown the server. Restarting eclipse has no effect.
How can I close or unbind a port forcibly from command line?
I know rebooting or log off and back on will clear the ports but this much slower process for me. I am looking for forcibly closing the port in command line.
how to close thunderbird fromterminal? I don't mean to kill the process,I just would like a "clean" exit.I'm asking this because my setup is so that the thrash should be cleared at exit so and the deleted email are deleted from the server. I then set a cron task so that thunderbird is killed but apparently doing so the emails are not deleted from the thrash (whereas they are if I close the application), and I'd like to change the task to close thunderbird rather then kill the process.
The download bar on my conky overlay (${downspeedgraph eth0}) seems to be maxed out constantly. This is when everything should be idle with no downloads happening in the background (at least non that I know about). Are there any command line tools that can tell me what process is using my ethernet port?
is it possible to open a file with a terminal without specifying the application it will use ? In fact I mean what is the equivalent of the double click on the file manager for a terminal.
I was wondering, is it possible to open Ubuntu's main menu from the command line? I've been searching for the answer for about 30 min's now but no luck.
I use a few command line programs quite often such as nano and mpc. I'd like to create a shortcut icon to open them rather than opening a terminal and then typing in the program name to open it. For example, how could i open konsole with nano opened in one step?
I would like to open the file manager by command line using sudo, but I just can't remember the name of it!! I can "almost" remember it... but it escapes me. And I am afraid I don't know where to look for it.
Yesterday I installed OpenOffice on my Linux server. But when I go to run it through the command line, it says command cannot be found. I've also tried other things like OOWriter, etc. Has anyone had this problem? Installation process went like below: root@aserver [OOO330_m20_native_packed-1_en-US.9567/RPMS]#
rpm -i *.rpm package openoffice.org-ure-1.7.0-9567.i586 is already installed package ooobasis3.3-core01-3.3.0-9567.i586 is already installed package ooobasis3.3-en-US-3.3.0-9567.i586 is already installed package ooobasis3.3-core02-3.3.0-9567.i586 is already installed
How can I open a folder in a window from the command line. I don't want to list the contents of the folder by the "ls" command, but want to open the folder through the command line, like it opens when we double click on the folder.
Some of my short cut keys seem not ot be working. Ex Alt +F2 dose not open a pop up command line. Also would like to add some short cuts. Like Ctrl + Alt+ Backspace for reboot. I went to the short cut app and I can add a short cut key, name it, but can't seem to figure out how to assign it a function. Didn't seem intuitive to me. I'm using the UNE version on a asus eel 1000.
I need to execute evince from command line or from a shell script and open it directly in full screen, or start some program for presentation.
I mean:
$ evince (this opens evince) $ evince /dir1/dir2/file.toview (this opens evince and the file.toview but not in full screen) $ evince /dir1/dir2/file.toview 'in mode presentation'
I want to pass ip address, port address and some parameters from command line using python script. The ip address and port address for establishing socket connection and remaining parameters to execute different connection.
I just installed apache. I didn't change the configuration files at all except add Quote: # added servername to avoid the could not determine fqdn error ServerName myname.homelinux.org to apache2.conf. Apache is working locally (I get the `it's working' screen at [URL]). However, I cannot access my computer from an external computer by going to [URL], which is equivalent to [URL] -- [IP address changed slightly for privacy] Here is a screenshot to my router settings. I disabled the filter for port 80 on the router. here shouldn't be a firewall, unless it's automatically installed with ubuntu 10.4. (sudo ufw status says `inactive'.)
I checked my ports from [URL] and indeed port 22 is open (ssh-ing into my computer externally is not a problem), whereas port 80 is closed. What step in opening up port 80 am I missing? (I also made sure my ISP isn't blocking port 80.)
needing to open a port in ubuntu, then use it for my VirtualBox Pc.My VirtualBox is running - Windows XP I have a router connected to my network - Linksys WRT54G Now lets begin, I have tried opening via there router homepage. But when I go to [URL] and test port 4900 is still says that it is closed.
No matter what I do, i cannot get port 3100 to open. This is for a new MMO i am CBT on. I know it works on windows because that is how I installed it and played. But I prefer being on Linux. Majority of all other MMOs work fine. Just this one has to have udp 3100 open.
The following is a rough output of all the methods I have tried with no success. As you can see I have done some extensive research first before posting here.
Now its become a lil bit of an obsession.
I cannot get the following command to work:
And yes I tried the "spaces" in different places thinking that was the prob. So i cannot see if 3100 is in the list or not
I eventually turned on the firewall "ufw enable" add the port there, and output:
Some references
[url]
Firewall stuff: [url]
I even manually went into the router and turned it on there.
I have an n900 phone and I'm trying to ssh to my desktop but I'm getting an error:
ssh: connect to host 58.xx.xx.xx port 22: Connection refused
I recently started using a router for I wanted to connect to net even with n900. I've tried to open the port from the setup page of the router however it doesn't seem to work. (find below the screenshot of setup page).
I've tried to ssh through slackware I've got as a virtual machine and I have the same problem although I was able to ssh through slackware before I started using the router.
i've gotten my fedora 12 to the point where i can run python3 scripts from command line and can call up python 2.6.2 idle with the command 'idle' from command line. what command will call up python3 (3.1.2 to be exact) idle?
