I have Ubuntu 10.10 running on a partition off of my Win7 hard drive. The thing I really like about Windows 7 is when I hit windows key+left or win+right, the current window will snap over to the left half or right half of the screen, respectively.
View 2 RepliesIf you don't know, users are able to quickly resize windows using the "ALT+MiddleClick" key shortcut/combo. Basically, hold the ALT key, and mouse middle click and hold on a window. Move the mouse around, and it will resize the window for you.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
1) Open a single Window.
2) Near the bottom-right-hand corner of the window, ALT+MiddleClick and drag. It should resize. Great. It works.
What Doesn't Work:
Now, the problem arises when you have multiple windows open on the desktop, they are "layered". i.e. you might have several windows open "behind" the one currently "up front". Example:
If I try to ALT+MiddleClick the "foreground window", it rarely actually resizes THAT window, and instead jumps one of the windows from behind to the front, and resizes that one instead!
STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
1) Open 3x gnome-terminal windows and say some nautilus window. Place them overtop one another. (like the above image)
2) Try to ALT+MiddleClick the foreground window.
3) Repeat this always trying to grab the foreground window.

I want to reassign ctrl-shift-C and ctrl-shift-V. How is that done? (I'm using a Mac keyboard and I'd like to take advantage of the command key to avoid having to hit two modifiers.)

I use Thunderbird on Ubuntu Linux and have just upgraded to Ubuntu 10 / Thunderbird 3. One of my gripes however is that Thunderbird uses a number of shortcut keys that have no secondary key requirements, for example, "Mark as Read" is M. Not ControlM. Just M. Worse, "Mark as Junk" is J. Which means I sometimes inadvertently mark messages as Junk.
How can I customize Thunderbird's shortcuts so, for example, "Mark as Junk" is ControlJ?

I want:
Ctrl-C to copy the selected text to the clipboard.
Ctrl-V to paste from the clipboard into the terminal.
Ctrl-Z to undo.
Ctrl-Shift-C (or even better, Super-C) to terminate the command.
Ctrl-Shift-Z (or Super-Z) to be the background command.
I*don't even know what Ctrl-V did before, some I*won't worry about remapping it.
EDIT:*I*have no idea what is putting the * char after each "I". Maybe this is a non-breaking space?
I removed pulseaudio save for the libs, and now I can't lock down my desktop with ctrl+alt+l anymore. I can still lock the system with the menu (System > Lock Screen), but it's kind of annoying. Removing pulseaudio has cleared up all of my mplayer stutter issues, but I would like to be able to use the keyboard shortcut keys. Here's the command I used to strip out pulseaudio:

The visual file manager Midnight Commander has the menus Left, File, Command, Options and Right.
Is there any shortcut key to open these menus?
Is there any way to disable shortcut keys in XFCE Terminal ? I can't seem to bind the shortcut keys, and F1 especially really gets in the way for some programs. Have no clue who thought it would be a good idea to bind F1 to a stupid help screen, when many terminal programs need this. I am using fluxbox, so maybe this has something to do with it.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm running Lucid 10.04, and I found something rather annoying that I can't find in the forums after a few searches, and would love to see fixed or hear a current solution for. When I try to manually resize a window (like FF or the terminal), I can't grab the left or right sides of it, only the top, bottom, or a side/corner that's flush against the side of the screen. The grab arrow barely appears for the most atomic fraction of time, and sometimes, even if moving slowly, doesn't appear at all. It's not a SUPER big deal, just an annoying aspect of the GUI. If I use my touchpad, I can grab a side if I move super slow, but I hate using that. I use a LogiTech M215 optical mouse. Realistically, I could just change mouse settings a bit and experiment, but that doesn't fix the problem that the "grab area" of the edges of a window is really, really tiny.

I can move it around when I do an alt + mouse click, but the window is too big to view all of the options it contains. I cannot resize it or see what is down there. When I click on my printer (epson work force 610) I can see the Driver details line but I cannot see below that so I have no idea what driver I am using. How come this window opens so tall and is not re-sizable??

When I move the cursor to the edge of a window to resize it, i only get the resize arrow in a very small area and it takes me several tries to get it just right. When i enable desktop effects from System/Prefrences/Desktop Effects, everything works absolutely fine. All the effects... But when i try to resize a window, Compiz crashes and all the borders of the window disappear. The ABRT shows an error. Here is what it says

The thing is I can resize the window vertically, but horizontally I cannot. When I put the pointer on the right or left edge of lancelot window the pointer becomes the resize pointer, but usual click and drag does not do anything on the window. Vertically it works fine.
Can I just delete Lancelot setting file to reset it? It seems I could not find where the settings are.
I've been tweeking my gnome setup a lot lately...I have a 14 inch screen on my laptop and decided I didn't need title bars anymore....so I added a bunch new hot keys andinstead of eliminating the title bare, which kills the borders too, I changed the width to a minimum.If I use the window switcher, I can only see the window if that window is not minimized. All one can see is an icon telling you what program that window is using if that window is minimized. It looks great if the window is open on the desktop.Are there any work arounds anyone know s of or better compiz setups I could use ?

So far, I've found the best method is to use the command line automation tool: xdotool - [url]
Here's what I did:Test out the xdotool in a new terminal window using this command

This should move your terminal window 100 pixels in from the top left of the leftmost display.
Find out the top-left coordinates of your rightmost display by using the Nvidia X Server Settings tool in Main menu > Administration or via the terminal:

Go to X Server Display Configuration and click the rightmost Display in the layout section. Its position offset should be displayed in the position field. Make a note of these two numbers.
Create a script to move your window, either to the leftmost screen or the rightmost screen, using this code or similar:

Remember, the number at the end is an argument that denotes the display (1 for left, 2 for right). Assign a keyboard shortcut to your custom shortcut. Repeat for the right display. Now when you press the keyboard shortcut, the active window should be moved to either the left or right display!

I've been looking for a similar way to accomplish this in (KDE) Kubuntu. I know that you can right-click on a window in the Task Manager and use "To Desktop" to move a window, but I'm just curious if the same thing can be accomplished with the keyboard.
