I have UNR 10.10 on two netbooks (Acer Aspire and Asus Eee). On both, irrespective of Power Management settings, the screen blacks out after a short period of inactivity and cannot be restored until the password is entered. This seems to be a UNR problem because the original Linux versions (Linpus Lite and Xandros respectively) dod not suffer from this.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm using Debian Jessie Cinnamon right now. I've got 1 user account on my machine--fred--as well as root, of course. "fred" is an administrator, and many times that is enough for root priviledges, for example, I can install packages via apt or dpkg. However, I cannot access "Users and Groups", or install packages via GDebi, with my password. For that, I have to have the root password.
I know that it is possible to let the admin account handle everything and not even need root--for example, Mint and (I believe) Ubuntu do it this way. I don't know how, though.

I did disable the root account by Code: Select allsudo passwd -l root to see if it would make any change. Nothing different happened except that I now can't use GDebi or access "Users and Groups" since the root account and therefore password is inactivated. Not a big deal to get it back, though.
I have a minor problem with my "Update Applet 2.28.0" in Gnome. It occurs when I want to make the applet do one or more suggested update(s). It always asks me for the password of superuser/root: "Authenticate : Authentication is required to update packages. [...]". I think under my installation before (11.1 maybe updated from an older version) I could tell the automatic/semi automatic updater to remember the su password (in YaST or in the authentication dialog?).
In the help manual on my computer (and in the internet) there is the possibility to make the updater remember the password via policy kit: ("Access to all privileged operations is controlled via PolicyKit." See: GNOME Documentation Library : gnome-packagekit Manual : Introduction) I could not find any policy kid or any other possibility to give to the automatic updater (or its user) that privilege permanently (=to remember authorization). I think on a system with more (real) users this could be a real problem (not just an inconvenience).

I deleted two CouchDB passwords, because i don't use Ubuntu One... But now i get an anoying warningmessage everytime I go into contacts in Evolution saying:

2] check the permission and the sticky bit on /bin/su file
3] went and copy the entire /bin; /usr/bin ; and /etc/pam.d from a working system over the the failed system and it also doesn't help
brand new 2 Ubantu & set up standard Ubantu compartment accessed via 1 user name only and password. 1st few times all good but now suddenly, unexpectedly password declared invalid. Had written down password so it is correct & not entry error. Not know how to reset password or bypass 'username/password log on screen' Am on an Acer 5542G with windows 7 home premium.

But I was tinkering around while I was there and hit the accessibility button, chose one of the options that had something to do with contrast then the UI changed colors and became Blue and white-ish. I unchecked the contrast option again but the UI didn't change back to its original colors like the image above. Rebooting didn't work either.
This is regarding the 'screen' utility. I use an utility called 'HummingBird Exceed' to get the XSession of a linux client on my windows desktop (basically it uses XDMCP). But the pain is that at the end of the day, when I close Exceed, the session gets destroyed. I did lot of searching on the web to know how the save and restore session in Exceed, but failed. However, I found that 'screen' is the utility which keeps the session intact even when you logout. So, I did the following:
a. Logged into the machine using Putty (terminal emulator).
b. Started 'screen'.
c. Issued the command: /usr/bin/gnome-session
I got the XSession on the Exceed and started working. I opened three or four gnome-terminals. But when I logout of exceed(and detach from the screen), the screen displayed a message saying that 'Connection to XServer was lost". Hence I could not restore to this session when I reattached to the screen. how do I use 'screen' so that when I attach to the screen on which I had started gnome-session, it attempts to connect to the Xserver and open the session as it was before detaching?
I have a weird problem that after increasing the screen resolution from 1024x786 (4:3) to 1280x900 something (also 4:3) that both top and bottom panels have disappeared. I am not familiar with the keyboard shortcuts to much but managed to get a terminal running so I should be able to do some command line stuff but as I am not too familiar where to edit perhaps someone can give me some pointers.
I guess first step is to restore the resolution to the original. Anyone any ideas?
are there any sweeper / cleaner apps which can take back my installation as to when it was new. I know home directory could have config files etc..but that doesnt matter, i want all packages and applications reset to how it was when i had a clean install. I am using Natty

This is probably really a quick fix but I cannot seem to find it. When I close my laptop lid it brings me to the standby screen which then asks me to put my password in, when i log in I managed to make it not ask me for a password but on the standby screen it still does.
It's just annoying me a little and wouldnt mind just being able to open my laptop and go. also same kinda problem with installing software, always asking for passwords but I guess i can live with that one.
I have an account where a user has no password. And the tickbox is ticked where it doesn't ask her to enter one at login.When her screen gets locked though, I can't access it again.. i.e. a password is required. And entering nothing doesn't work.

Ubuntu came back to the login splash screen-I selected my login and entered my Correct password-Ubuntu splashed up screen writting (Unable to read as its to quick) and Ubuntu then returns to the login screen. Incidently when I enter an incorrect password Ubuntu tells me that it is incorrect but with my correct password it just returns to the login splash screen.

View 6 Replies View RelatedMy Ubuntu was working perfectly fine until this morning. It is the latest release (10.04 I think) and it is the 64 bit version. This morning I go to my computer and see there are some updates waiting. I install the updates without paying much attention to them. I really do not remember what the updates were. Then Ubuntu asks me to restart so I restart. After restart I get the usual log in screen and I hear the drums. I put in my password, press enter and then the log in screen disappears and I expect to see my desktop. But that does not happen. Instead in a split second after disappearing, the log in screen reappears and I hear the drums again.
At the beginning I thought that I simply forgot my password. But that is unlikely because I have been using the same password for 6 years now. But just in case I tried an incorrect password and I got a different behavior. If I put in an incorrect password, Ubuntu will simply say "authentication failed" and the log in screen will not disappear. When I put in the correct password, the log in screen disappears for a split second (as if my password is correct) but then instead of taking me to the desktop it takes me back to the log in screen and sounds the drums again.
I installed a couple of updates that the update manager said were important the other night and now I can't get past the default key ring password screen. Only the mouse works (USB); the keyboard has no response.I know the password but I just can't get the keyboard to work.

When I go to "Software Sources..." in the Software Center, the screen dims bringing my attention to the password prompt. I find this quite aesthetically pleasing and am immediately aware that I cannot continue until I enter my password. This is the only time that the screen dims in this fashion when asking for my admin password. Is this correct? If not (or maybe even if it is), should this be considered one for the papercut ninjas?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI may be a beginner to Ubuntu 10.10, but I'm fairly certain that this is weird: I have had no trouble logging into my Ubuntu 10.10 netbook until this morning. Now I am unable to get past the login screen. It says that there is an Authentication Failure, which is bogus. Not only should the password work, but it does in the Terminal. I am able to login to the terminal and gain root access.
I can even change my unix password, but no matter what I try I can't get to my desktop. I did run into a major issue with a frozen program. Rather than reboot, I tried to close it using the kill command. What ended up happening was that all that remained was my wallpaper, probably a bad move on my part, but I'm a rookie. I think I killed all running applications. This happened last night... so probably related.
