Ubuntu :: Original Developer Is No Longer Able To Support Software
Oct 1, 2010
I have a "stripped down" version of ubuntu 9.10 that was created for me by a developer. It's installed on a Dell Latitude 2100 and I have a flash drive with an image so that I can install it onto multiple Dell Latitude 2100's to use out in the field. The original developer is no longer able to support the software and I have a problem with the gnome power manager (I think that's where the problem is) in that when lid is closed, I get a black screen.I know that the laptop is still running fine behind this black screen because if I plug in an external monitor I can see the screen (only on the external) and use the laptop fine.I know also that the developer stripped out parts of the gnome power manager and possibly acpi as well (if that has anything to do with the lid switch?)I can get the screen back if I go to a terminal and "sudo vbetool dpms on". I do this by using the external monitor but this doesn't solve my issue because out in the field there is no external monitor to use. The lid gets closed often in the field ad the only way to get it back is to hard reboot (hold down the power button till power off and then turn it on again.I've tried removing and re-installing gnome power manager as well as acpi and acpi support but this doesn't help.
I've tried using gconf-editor to set the lid_ac and lid_battery to "blank" and also "nothing" and I still get the same problem. When installing a full copy of 9.10 on these laptops and setting the lid_ac and lid_battery settings to "blank" or "nothing" it works perfectly so it's definitely something to do with what's been stripped out.At this stage, I am just looking for a solution that will allow people out in the field to get the screen back on whenever this happens ... so even if it's a case of them being able to invoke the "sudo vbetool dpms on" command by some manner ... note that part of the stripping has been to disable various key bindings.

I apologize if this is a duplicate post but I was unable to find anything that addressed my question. Currently I've installed the nvidia developer driver (beta) found here:[URL]..
After installing the driver everything works correctly. Rebooting the system results in a hang prior to starting X. Opening a new console and running start X provides me with the following error:
Code:
[ 103.884]
X.Org X Server 1.8.2
Release Date: 2010-07-01
[ 103.885] X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0
[ 103.885] Build Operating System: x86-10 2.6.32-44.el6.x86_64
[Code]..;.
At this point if I reinstall the driver and reissue startx, again the system starts up properly. Also I've noticed that after a reboot, my xorg.conf file is being overwrriten.

I bought this not too long ago and it worked great in my ubuntu 8.04 install. When in windows I decided to pair the bluetooth combo with a different bluetooth dongle. After changing it back to the original MS dongle (which I used in ubuntu) the keyboard no longer responds in ubuntu. It works in the CMOS, it works on my windows computer, but not in ubuntu anymore. Mouse works fine, and so does the touch pad on the keyboard.
Is there any way around this? I've tried re-pairing, and waiting a very long time...

just got a quick question: I need to install Oracle's SQL Developer since I need to use the program for a database unit at Uni. Anyway, if you've tried to use it before you'd realise that there is only a .rpm installer available for it (no .deb). So I tried to convert it to .deb using alien. When I "sudo alien --scripts" the .rpm I get: error: incorrect format: unknown tag mkdir: cannot create directory `sqldeveloper-2.1.1.64.45': File exists unable to mkdir sqldeveloper-2.1.1.64.45: at /usr/share/perl5/Alien/Package.pm line 257.
Basically, I'm asking, does anyone know what I'm doing wrong here? I've never used alien before since I've never had a need to convert a .rpm before. I also tried installing and running Java JDK and SQL Developer under Wine, but was unsuccessful with that as well

Being a LAMP snob, it pains me to even think these thoughts, but .I'm running FC-9, and developing websites, mainly using PHP - well the whole LAMP thing. I now find the need to test/code for IE. To that end I'm thinking VMware, VitrualBox, etc. loaded up with that "other" OS.
I'm sure others have gone down this path. I'm guessing the answer is Win-7. My main question is: OK, I do a virgin buy and install and register it on my VM. Six months later I want to change from VM-X to VM-Y and I reinstall - what is MS's feelings on VM's.

It is a sad day indeed, but I need to run a developer's tool that only runs on Windows, and it interfaces with a USB device that doesn't do well through any VMs I've tried. I've resorted to installing XP.
Now, I'm wondering if there will be any problems I'll face installing XP after Ubuntu 10.04 has already been installed? I suspect so, but it's been a while since I dual booted, and I've never worked with Grub2,

Today, I am in a dilemma in choosing my career path. Hope you will help me in solving this. I have completed 8-9 months as Linux Admin. I have an opportunity to continue as Linux Admin or become Linux application developer ( C++ ). I have little bit of competency in C++, but currently I am Linux Admin. Here are my questions
1. Are Linux admins highly paid than Linux application developers ?
2. which one has got more demand ?
3. what will be the future of Linux Admin ? what would be the role of Linux Admin in an organization after 5 years ?
4. As I am interested on both of these options, I am facing difficulty in choosing my career path.

I've been googling such terms as "Gnome Shell Developer Reference", etc, and poking around developer.gnome.org; and i can't seem to find documentation on how to code interface elements against the gnome shell for javascript / xHTML / css. Does anyone know where they keep it, or am i completely misunderstanding that aspect of the new gnome hell, in that you only use js to do themes, but not plugins or inteface changes?

The problem is I still want the Stable version of Chromium, and I want the developer version of Chromium not the beta release. So I got 2 problems: I need to downgrade this Chromium to the Stable release and then I want to install the developer release of Chromium and not lose this Stable release. I'm currently running 11.04 Ubuntu..

What's the actual command I run to run OOo developer version download: OpenOffice.org Developer Builds and Release Candidates the last entry, "Snapshot...". I'm curious to see if some of the bugs they are saying are fixed are fixed in that version. I have it installed, and I know they do not have "desktop-integration" for a reason, but they don't actually tell you what the physical terminal command to run it is.

Edit: Oops. Sorry if this is in the wrong forum. I meant to post it in the general forums, yet somehow it ended up here. It kind of fits here as well I guess. I am currently trying to move my career forward and am not having much luck. So I've come to see if any of you can offer some fresh advice to help me out.
Let me tell you first where I stand in my career to give you an idea of where I'm starting from. I am currently 26 years old and have recently graduated with a bachelors of computer science from university. I would call myself an average student, nothing special, nor anything horrible. Out of university this landed me an ok job as a PHP developer. However I dont want to stagnate in this position scripting junk all day and not ever challenge myself. not to mention i could certainly rant for a while on the things that fall short at my current position (read: being banned from object oriented programming because the boss cant understand it)
I'd like to find a job that (1) challenges me just the right amount to help me learn and grow but not get overwhelmed in a language I enjoy (hopefully such as C/C++/Java or the like)
(2) is at a company with at least some software design process implemented (agile,xp,etc)and if that is to much to ask, then I'd at least like to move in that direction. So that is what I am looking towards and I would love any advice on how to achieve that. Maybe some of you were in my position 5 or 10 years ago and could shed some light on the subject. I've scoured the internet for job postings that offer what I am looking for, but they are really hard to find. The postings are usually looking for senior or intermediate level programmers with at least 5+ years of experience, or looking for web development script monkeys to make "The next big facebook app" (the job I already have)
I've also considered attending conferences and such, but have never really been, and wouldn't know what to do, or where to even find out about them (I used to see postings every now and then at university, but now I live in a small town.)

I experience this since kde 4, but it never really was that bad because once in a while on updating kde I also deleted the .kde folder in my home-folder and everything was fast again.
But I haven't done this for a while now and kde take really long to load. Is there any folder to clean up there without deleting the whole .kde-folder and loosing all my settings again?

I'm trying to find out when QME2572 (Qlogic) card became support by the kernel. We have a RHEL 5.1 system that is moving to new hardware, however the kernel at this release doesn't support the new hardware, due to the Qlogic card change. I tired the Redhat KB and Bugzilla. Is there a Kernel change list etc I can search. Never really played around with the kernel too much so I'm just after some pointers for looking up this information. Offically its not supported until Redhat 5.3, I'm trying trying to research kernel info so I can tell the customer they have to upgrade.

I'm looking to dual-boot Windows 7 and Debian 6 upon its release on my sister's laptop. I want to share a partition between the two of them so that /home points to this directory and the Windows equivalent also points to it (C:Users).
Anyway, I've heard good and bad things about the NTFSMount driver (I think it's NTFS-3G now) and the NTFSprogs project and so I am not so certain what I should believe. I do know that NTFS has relatively high overhead, though I do not recall the source of this assertion, so I am considering the use of EXFAT. An open source EXFAT project is hosted on Google Code at [url] and it utilizes the kernel module FUSE.
I'm quite certain that I've got everything covered on the Windows side -- that is, I know that both NTFS and EXFAT will be suitable filesystems for my required usage.
My issue is that I'm curious which will have superior performance and stability in Debian. I planned on building the package from source and mounting the device in my FSTAB but I have also found a PPA for Ubuntu on Launchpad at [url] that I could borrow the debian/rules from and make a .deb package from.
What do you guys think? Should I go at it with the EXFAT or NTFS partitioning? Is NTFS-3G actually fairly supported at this point? Or perhaps should I consider some alternate method?
I have also considered that the only files she will be sharing are those of music, videos, and pictures so it could be better to just link /home/xxxx/Pictures (Music and Videos, too) to the new partition instead of all of /home.

Installed karmic fresh a couple weeks ago.
After doing the last update I can only reboot to the BusyBox (intramfs) prompt -pic is attached. Other posts suggest there are some missing modules but I haven't figured it out yet.
There are some files I'd like to save to my external hard drive not to mention my evolution emails, Firefox bookmarks, etc. in case I have to reinstall 9.10.
find these things when I'm booted up using the Live CD? They must be buried somewhere in the file system but haven't been able to find them.
how to get past the BusyBox boot issue, attached is the RESULTS.txt file from the Boot Info Script.

I think I may have accidentally screwed up my sources.list for Ubuntu 10.04 x64. Does anyone know where I can find the original?
For example, when I try to 'sudo aptitude install zsnes' the package is there (it let's me auto complete it), it gives me the following:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Reading extended state information

ubuntu one takes like 30s to start all of the sudden (it used to be almost instantaneous on log in). This is an issue for two reasons: first is the fact that system performance is drastically compromised while ubuntuone-syncdaemon starts since it is accessing the disk as much as it absolutely can, which means that other programs also take forever to launch; second, when it finally does start, I am prompted to unlock the keyring, which interrupts whatever I am doing in a fairly annoying fashion and prevents the screen from locking properly if the computer is suspended.
While ubuntuone-syncdaemon is taking its merry time to launch, the status of the process is "uninterruptable," and an entire processing core is used at 100% with IOwait, as it is furiously accessing the hard drive. Is their any way I can get u1 back to original, unobtrusive self? Could this be indicative of a hard drive issue.

They were controlled by BIOS for start-up without problem.Just wiped out Fedora and installed Ubuntu 9.10 64bit. During installing GRUB I saved it on Master, IIRC.Now Ubuntu and Vista startup are controlled by boot loader. I have to start Ubuntu first and on kernel selection select (loader)(on/dev/sdb1).Then Vista starts. It works. How can I restore to its original setup?Their booting is controlled by BIOS.

Now when I go to the CLI through the terminal I get "Tom@new-host-2:~$ " which has no privileges. I obviously messed up something. I can't find a way to get back to my original prompt when I access the terminal.
