Ubuntu :: Opening Specific Applications On Corresponding WorkSpaces?

Oct 18, 2010

I have a lot of application scheduled to load at startup (GoldenDict, Tomboy Notes, Evolution Mail, Liferea, etc.) and I'd like some of them to appear on the workspaces different from the default. I have Ubuntu 10.10 with Gnome and Compiz effects. Is there a way to do this without a lot of mess?

Ubuntu :: Opening Many Programs And Placing Them In Specific Monitors / Workspaces?

Jun 16, 2011

I am fairly new to Ubuntu and was wondering if anybody knows of a way to open up a number of programs and placing them in specific spots programmatically. Basically, I'm trying to avoid having to open my IDE, multiple terminal windows, browsers, etc... and then having to place them all in the exact position I want when my machine boots up. Ideally, I could say:Program A, is placed on Monitor 1, workspace 1, at position 0, 0, with height and width 600 x 400. Program B, is placed on Monitor 2, workspace 2, at position 600, 500, with height and width 1000 x 600

Ubuntu :: Opening Multiple Applications With One Keyboard Shortcut?

Aug 21, 2010

I would like to open multiple applications with one keyboard shortcut but don't get it running. When I add (open "System" > "Preference" > "Keyboard Shortcuts"; clicked "Add" ) a new shortcut and enter many commands in the "Command" field e.g. "gnome-terminal & xeyes" only the first application is started. I also tried to set up a shell script that contains the application calls and then use "gnome-terminal -x "sh /path/to/the/script.sh" but then I get the error message "There was an error creating the child process for this terminal".

Ubuntu :: Opening Applications (only Gnome-terminals) In Defined Workspace?

Aug 18, 2010

Ideally I would like to set a keyboard shortcut to open a set of applications. The applications (mainly different gnome-terminals) should be opened in different, previously defined workspaces. I had a look around but could not find a simple solution (maybe it could be done in devilspie but I would like to avoid that). If I limit myself only to gnome-terminal and instead of using the keyboard shortcuts call the application in the shell the placement of the terminal can be done by using "--geometry" (see "man gnome-terminal" and "man X") e.g. "gnome-terminal --geometry 50x20+200+300". wmcrtl show me that my 6 workspaces are treated as one desktop (my interpretation - maybe wrong):

Code:
$ wmctrl -d
0 * DG: 7680x1024 VP: 0,0 WA: 0,1 1280x1023 Desk 1

Fedora :: Getting The Specific Packages And Applications?

Dec 24, 2009

If I am correct there is an official list(probably by Fedora itself) of packages/software included in each Fedora version, but I can't find it. I also have a couple of queries below.

1. There are always new applications, packages, games etc. being released for Fedora by open source developers and companies. Is there a good website where I can get a list of all these new packages etc, if possible an official one? I visit some sites such as Linux.com, but based on your own experience, I think you can guide me better.

2. In order to know which packages are installed on the Fedora machine one can type the following command, is that right?

Code:

rpm -qa

And this one gives the exact number of installed packages.

Code:

rpm -qa | wc -l

OpenSUSE :: Starting Applications In Specific Locations In KDE?

Jun 15, 2011

I have a workstation dedicated to monitoring. The goal is to have multiple web sessions and other applications running across dual screens on multiple virtual desktops. I have a nice Perl/TK/wmctrl script that will automatically rotate the desktops. All is working great.

The problem is, I need a solution to automatically start the applications on the correct desktop, with the correct window size, in the correct location on the desktop. That way we can start the monitor boxes in the morning and have everything start in the correct place. It is a really cool effect to have wall mounted monitors with cube rotation showing off multiple graphs and more.

Do any of you pros know how to start an application with a specific window size and define where on the desktop it is placed? The box is running OpenSUSE 11.4 KDE. Is that kind of control possible?

Ubuntu :: Allow A Specific User To Mount Or Remount A Specific Partition?

Jun 9, 2010

my system I want user1 and only user1 to be able to mount and unmount a specific partition, this partition contains backups and is usually mounted read only, needs to be temporarily mounted read/write by user1 while doing the backup.user1 is an unprivileged user. I've read that the user option will let any user mount the file-system (and only that user can then subsequently unmount it) and that the users option allows any user to mount or unmount the file-system.I also found this in mount's man pageQuote:The owner option is similar to the user option, with the restriction that the user must be the owner of the special file. This may be useful e.g. for /dev/fd if a login script makes the console user owner of this device. The group option is similar, with the restriction that the user must be member of the group of the special file.So it looks like I'd need a login script for that user to make the user owner of the device file (/dev/voiceserv/backup in this case)

In other words, if one of our employees is getting harassed by a 'stalker', how would one go about blocking, at the MTA (Sendmail) level, a specific sender email address from reaching a particular users inbox? We do not want to capture the email - simply block it before it consumes server resources. The Sendmail server (MTA) is a front end to our Exchange server so no user accounts exist on the Linux server. We simply use it as a SPAM and Virus scanner then forward clean email to the Exchange server.
