Recently our Son showed me Xscreensaver which he has running on his Debian Squeeze machine. Since I really like what you can do with it and since I use Squeeze as well, I figured that I'd try out the Xscreensaver on my system. Compiz is already working and I haven't had any 3D related problems yet. Anyway, so I install xscreensaver from the software center ... then I go to the main menu ... sure enough it's there alright. Then I place a checkmark in the box to activate/display that feature in the main menu ... but after a second or two the checkmark just vanishes. This happens over and over, even after rebooting.
I thought that a logged in user has full privileges over the items that appear in the main menu? Am I missing something? I don't know of any other (root) method to access the main menu with the apps ... Everything else reacts fine, just the folder for the xscreensaver can't be checked.
If I am correct there is an official list(probably by Fedora itself) of packages/software included in each Fedora version, but I can't find it. I also have a couple of queries below.
1. There are always new applications, packages, games etc. being released for Fedora by open source developers and companies. Is there a good website where I can get a list of all these new packages etc, if possible an official one? I visit some sites such as Linux.com, but based on your own experience, I think you can guide me better.
2. In order to know which packages are installed on the Fedora machine one can type the following command, is that right?

Does anybody know how to manually edit the main menu (gnome) launcher files? I would like to start a program as root but the only wasan get it to work is to set it up as a "Terminal Application" and put sudo in front of the command. Is there a way (similar to "system-config-firewall" ) can prompt for the root password an run the software as an "Application"

Some themes will include an icon for the Gnome Main Menu that you may or may not like including the default Fedora "infinity" Main Menu icon.Most launchers, whether on the desktop or on a Gnome panel, will permit you to change the individual icon. The Gnome Main Menu offers no such facility. Whereas there have been several challenging methods suggested to change that icon on a system-wide basis, there is an easy and straightforward way to do it on a user account basis.
Note: the method described herein applies only to the single Main Menu icon usually added to a Gnome panel in place of the custom Menu Bar that Fedora creates by default. This method does not work with the default custom Menu Bar. i'm using fedora core 12 on my laptop vostro 1310. I don't know why every gnome window has lost the main menu. Does someone know the way to turn on again those menus
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have finally ditched Ubuntu/Mint after 2 years and have now installed Fedora 12. I am excited to give it a spin. This was the first version of Fedora that finally recognized my intel graphics card.
I have 2 questions:
1. How do I edit the fedora/Gnome main menu? When I left click on Applications, etc. I am not given that option.
2. How do I change the login screen?
I my trying to install Ubuntu onto a new 1 TByte Sata HDD on my Dell 8400. The computer has no other OS installed as the old HDD containing Windows XP has being removed. The new hdd has being fully formatted and is set up as a NTFS with a single partition of 1 TByte. I downloaded the latest version of UBuntu and burned it to a cd as a ISO file. When I boot my computer up from this cd I am asked to enter my language of choice and then I get the main menu screen. On this screen I choose option (2) - Install Ubuntu. After a few minutes during which time you can hear the cd being accessed the screen just displays this main menu and never changes. I have tried twice using this install option but after 45-50 minutes the screen still never changes. No progress information is given. If it is normal how long does the installation generally take?

I have read about creating a .desktop file but tried that and it still does not appear under the menu I like. It does appear on the desktop but not because of the .desktop file.

I have installed Fedora 14 with gnome. My problem is that in some applications the archive menu doesn't appears. Some of this applications are geany, tux commander, filezilla ... nevertheless in other applicationas like firefox, chrome, vlc ... the menu appears.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI upgraded to Fedora 15 (64 bit) on my laptop using preupgrade. Everything is working great except for a small problem. My menus are completely messed up. In F14, I had organized my menus in a particular way. After the upgrade, many of items have been moved around quite randomly. I tried to fix it using 'alacarte' but nothing is changed in that - i.e. according to 'alacarte' all my menus are in the right place. In reality, though, the upgrade process has deleted a few menu folders but not the items in them. The items are just moved to random locations. Is there a way to fix these changes these? 'alacarte' is of no use here. Is it possible to fix these using CLI? Where are the information regarding the menu organization stored?

The changes are a little jarring, but I'm trying to have some good faith, see how I adjust to things, etc. Any ways, the applications menu (in "fallback" mode) or the 'activities -> applications' menus (in "full" mode) have every application I've ever installed, some times poorly classified. I'd like to edit these, making more minimal menus.
There is, of course, the "alacarte" application. While it runs just fine -- the changes are not reflected in the menus (in either mode). One could manually edit the desktop configuration text files, I assume, but as much work as I need to do -- I was hoping for a GUI application. Does an alternative exist? or a way to interface them?
I am using Fedora 15 Live CD and after I did Yum update there are 2 icons of google chrome showing in the applications menu and also there are few other icons I want to remove, is there a way to do that, I searched in system settings but there was nothing there?

When I right-click on the 'Applications' menu I don't see the 'edit' ...
I'm a comparative newbie, especially with using WINE. I installed it through the F12 package installer. I then found that the Applications menu entries were inoperative. Just plain dead. I tried uninstalling, then reinstalling. No improvement. Tried again from terminal using yum no change. The only way I've got anything to work is if I run from terminal as root. I know that if the .wine directory is created with root it may only work with root. I've tried deleting that directory, but I'm not sure I succeeded. I don't see the .wine directory but nothing runs with a non-root login.
When I do see errors, they are mostly that the program can't be found in a WINE "DOS" directory. I did get two MS Office apps installed (as test cases) but, again, F12 menu items don't work and I can only run them as root. I think internet access is cut off as well (can't get them to activate). I guess my overall question is: How do I install WINE in F12 such that the menu items work for non-root logins? If there's already a guide, wiki or FAQ, I'd be happy to know where it is.
I have just installed fedora 15, I haven't seen fedora since version 7 back in 2007, and I must say, it's very impressive.I can't however figure out how to add a downloaded application, like Intellij-Idea to the activities menu. With the old gnome, you could just create a task bar short cut to any .sh and give it a png icon, but for the life of me, I can't figure out how to do the same for activities. Searching online doesn't help, since all I seem to find is how to add or remove packages, with the UI, which I would never do to begin with, as I am a command line person. But for some reason, I am quite impressed with this activities menu thing, and I want to use it on the laptop

View 6 Replies View RelatedWhenever I try to use a bookmark in the Main Menu (under "Places"), I get an error message. For example, if I want to open my Documents folder, the message reads:
"[STOP Sign] Could not open location 'file:///home/pilotferdi/Documents'
Failed to execute child process "/usr/bin/digikam" (No such file or directory)" (I had digikam installed on my computer, then I decided to remove it.)When I open a Nautilus file browser, and choose "Information" from the side pane, my home directory is listed with these three options (buttons) below:
1. Open with digikam
2. Open with Gwenview
3. Open with Open Folder
Somehow, the default choice, "Open with Open Folder" has been replaced with "Open with digikam", and I cannot access the bookmarks anymore. I think I need to make "Open with Open Folder" the default option when I click on a bookmark, but I don't know how to do it. I tried without success to use alacarte to make the changes.
Shouldn't I be able to right click the "Main Menu" icon to edit edit the Main Menu? Or have I lost my marblesHow can I edit the Gnome "Main Menu" in Fedora 12?
