Ubuntu :: OpenGL Apps Don't Work?
May 23, 2010
Whenever I try to start an OpenGL app in the terminal, I get a message to the point of "could not create GL context." It was working until around the last update. I know it's not a hardware problem because my windows partition works as well as ever.
I'm using Hardy Heron with the closed Nvidia driver with a Geforce 9800gt
'glxinfo | grep OpenGL' gives
Code:
Error: glXCreateContext failed

I need to use FGLRX on my laptop, if I don't, either some OpenGL apps don't load, or the performance is poor.. With FGLRX the performance of the app is great and all work..
However, since Ubuntu 10.10, FGLRX no longer has "smooth" video.. And what I mean by that, even a simple DVD is dropping like 50% of it's frames every second with FGLRX. However, if I use the open source ATI driver, there is no video performance problem and even HD video plays fine, but then GL apps become a problem again..
In Ubuntu 10.04 FGLRX didn't have this problem. I did try to upgrade to the latest FGLRX 10.12, and every time I try on Ubuntu 10.10, I result with X not starting at all..
Here's the kicker though, the built in Movie Player with Ubuntu, works fine no matter which driver is used.. Now this wouldn't be an issue for me, but DVD's don't play right in that player, it runs like it's vibrating, but all other video formats work fine..
I'm at a loss. I gave up Linux a few months ago and wanted to try again, but once again, ATI is letting me down, and this is a laptop, buying a new laptop just because of the GPU is out of the question.

I'm running Debian Lenny with GNOME on a ThinkPad T43. Some OpenGL apps like the game Trigger run great, while others like Stellarium crash my system beyond recovery. I get a black screen, I can see the mouse cursor and move it at a very slow speed, but nothing else. I can't switch to a different terminal or restart X with ctrl-alt-bksp.
I assume that the problematic apps do not like the laptop's integrated graphics chip? Is there a way to know ahead of time what apps might be troublesome, before actually running them? I hate hard resets.

I use an ATI card with proprietary drivers and my memory usage in ideal situations when idle is around 600-700 MB. I use cairo-dock, AWN, compiz, gnome-do, and GNOME (w/o panel). My problem is, I have mysteriously increasing memory usage over time, which drops back down after I restart all my openGL applications. It can get as high as 1.5 GB. Looking in top, the weird thing is that when I sort by memory, I observe that none of the applications I am restarting, nor Xorg, use a significantly smaller percentage of system memory after being restarted. So what is going on? Does fglrx have some kind of memory leak? And is there a fix? In the last 10 minutes, my memory has for no apparent reason increased from 700 MB idle to 775 idle, and is still going up.

EDIT: I got it to work. It turns out that mesa-common-dev works with my nVidia drivers.
I'm new here, and to Linux/Ubuntu in general, so I apologize if this is in the wrong section or something. Anyways, I'm trying to get the OpenGL SDK to work on my computer. I've already gotten gcc/++ and whatnot, and I'm fairly sure I've upgraded my graphics drivers to the most current possible. A quick check reveals that my graphics card is nVidia:
Code:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV41.8[GeForce Go 6800] (rev a2)So I assume that I need to get the nVidia OpenGL packages:
Code:
sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx-dev
However, that nets me this error:
Code:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package nvidia-glx-dev is not available, but is referred to by another package. This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or is only available from another source
E: Package 'nvidia-glx-dev' has no installation candidate
My only other thought is to apt-get mesa-common-dev, but I don't know if that will work with nVidia. (And this is a rather old computer, so the problem might just be one of obsoleteness, but it doesn't seem like so, from the error I'm getting).

I have an OpenGL program in a Linux server. I want to run the program remotely with X forwarding, but it fails, whereas programs such as xclock and xeyes work fine. (I confirmed that the program works in the local desktop environment.) Below is additional information.
Test Code:
#include <GL/glut.h>
#define WIDTH 300
#define HEIGHT 300
void display()

I just upgraded from FC8 (32-bit) to FC11 (64-bit). In doing so, I backed up my entire World of Warcraft folder so I could try to avoid having to download and install it all over again. However, I've now reinstalled wine (64-bit now), and the nvidia drivers from the rpmfusion repos (also 64-bit), and when I try to start WoW, it says it cannot load OpenGL. I'm wondering if anyone knows what's up, and if there's a solution that doesn't involve reinstalling WoW.

I have installed Suse Linux 11.2 and I had problem with graphics, when I moved windows there were many lines showing, I have installed an original driver for it and now instead of lines moving windows is very slow. When I try to activate compositing with flip with it gives an error and OpenGL does not work. Only XRender works and windows are faster but scrolling is still slow.
My Graphics Card: ATI Radeon HD 4570
Installed Driver: ATI Radeon HD 4500 Series

I need to be able to open an openGL based piece of software remotely (like Maya or 3D Studio Max, for example). The server will be a linux machine (CentOS, currently, fwiw), but the client should be able to run on at least Linux and Windows. This will happen over the internet as opposed to over a LAN.
So far, I've tried
- "NoMachine NX" which is pretty good, but it seems to have some issues with GL. Maybe this can be fixed in xorg on the server (disabling overlays or something like that)? not sure.
- HP Remote Graphics Software (RGS) which works fairly well with Cent & Windows, though is sometimes a little slow. It also doesn't seem to be happy on Ubuntu, which is a pretty big bummer. It's also a bummer that it's somewhat expensive. That said, it's still the front-runner.
- VNC which was very slow.
It's imperative that it can transmit very complex rendered OpenGL properly. It's ok if it's slow to tumble/refresh, but it should be correct.

I didn't have any luck finding the solution for not getting opengl working on a SLES11 server with a remote X-Win32 client. As a reference I've used the tool "glxgears" for testing.We have two servers. One (server A) with SLES10 and the other (server B) with SLES11. We use X-Win32 (ver. 9.x) as an X-server on a Microsoft Windows client machine. Both servers are connected to with ssh with X11 forwarding enabled (Xclock works fine on both).Starting glxgears from server A works fine; Three nice gears are displayed.

My understanding is that there is no Optimus support for Linux at this time.Will a default CentOS installation work fine with just the integrated graphics.in other words, will Optimus and the discrete graphics be ignored? Will OpenGL still work correctly with the Intel integrated graphics?I am considering an i5-based laptop with Optimus support, where I might go with a dual-boot configuration.

I'm using Debian Jessie. All the firmware packages are properly installed, and so are the radeon free driver packages.
However, Gallium falls back to llvmpipe, which from what I understand is a software rasterizer and not actually hardware rendering.
Everything works fine except some specific things like KDE's cube animation, which says it can't be enabled because it requires OpenGL.
How do I get Debian to run Gallium properly?
I attached some relevant info...
glxinfo | grep -i opengl

i installed indicator applet appmenu (the new maverick netbook globalmenu, but i installed it in the desktop version) in order to have a global menu, but unfortunately it does not work with firefox, netbeans, mono-develop and openoffice from the apps i tested so far. unlinke gnome2-global-menu which works only with gtk apps, this does work with qt apps (i tested it with qt creator) but in anki, the menu is displayed but inactive so you can't actually use it. are there any plans to fix this issue? netbeans and oppen-office are java apps and monodevelop is a mono app. firefox probably uses some custom widget for the menu....
later edit: it also does not work with shotwell
later edit2: it does surprisingly work with tomboy which is mono as far as i know

after being not so satisfied with opensuse 11.4 (worked really slow at times), i decided to downgrade to 11.3. But now, some applications won't start. When starting personal kontact, i only got a notification that akonadi server is starting but it doesn't progress. Only thing I can do is to kill the app.Same for Clementine (amarok-like player), but here it doesn't even try to start.So, I was thinking to delete all the settings folders concerning these apps in my home folder, but it doesn't change anything. I did so by searching for *kmail* *kontact* and *clementine* and erased those folders. Could it be that I forgot some? Some folders under some different names? I'm not really experienced into this subject

I've Intellij Idea and Netbeans installed on my Ubuntu desktop. Both worked fine while I was on 10.10.After upgrading to 11.04 both of them became irresponsive to Ctrl+C/Ctrl+V/Ctrl+{Any alphabet letter} combinations. However these combinations work in non-Java apps (e.g. gedit).Besides that Ctrl+Alt+L (Lock screen) is not handled by the system, no matter what application is active.Disabling unity does not help. Starting in ubuntu classic w/o effects does not help either.

I want to use my QTCurve theme for GTK apps. This has worked great for several months on opensuse 11.2, and suddenly it broke. I do not know what made it broke, purhaps some kind of system update...The gtk-Qtcurve engines are installed (both 32 and 64 bit). I tried linking the gtkrc file from /usr/share/themes/QtCurve/gtk-2.0 towards /etc/gtk-2.0 but that didn't help either. I can change the GTK themes to whatever theme, except to QTCurve...

So I have a Logitech 9000 web cam installed and working (again) with Skype. That's great when I want to video chat with family, but that's all I can do with it. I would like to record some movies using my web cam but I can't because of the following reasons:
1. I can't find an application for Linux that actually works. So far they all fail to work for a variety of reasons.
2. The ones that sort of work, don't allow me to do what I want, record a video with my web-cam and save the file for future use or distribution.
I just want a simple application that allows me to click on record, stop recording and save. Why isn't there anything around that can do that? Seriously, this is something I have been looking for since, 2001. And so far I have only found one application that kind of worked, but it's no longer developed and I can't find it anymore.
[Code]...
So let's recap. In another thread I am trying to get .wmv files to play (they work on one system but not another?) and none of the applications for web cams work as I want. Oh, and wine? It's a joke, not one application I have tried to run with wine works. The either just don's start OR they start but half the components never paint and it runs like a flea in frozen molasses.
I am a bit frustrated and rather tired of not being able to easily do what Windows folk can do with relative ease. Something wrong with that. And I haven't even begun to tack text to speech yet.

New here so please go easy. I am trying to get OpenGL running on Ubuntu 10.04 (64 bit). The hardware is a Dell box with a NVidia Quadro 600 graphics card; I am also running under VMware.
I tried using "apt-get install nvidia-current", followed by "nvidia-xconfig", which told me a new xorg.conf file had been written. I then rebooted. A dialog appeared saying Ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode and that it had failed to load module "nvidia" and no drivers available.
As I didn't seem to get very far this way, I tried downloading the NVidia 64 bit linux driver version 275.09.07 and ran this from the console. Firstly it told me that I do not appear to have a NVidia GPU supported by this version of the driver (yet NVidia's description of the driver says it does support this gpu). I went ahead and let it try to build the kernel module but then it failed with the message "failed to load kernel module 'nvidia.ko" I'm not clear how to proceed on this one. Has anyone else got a Quadro 600 card to work? If so, how?

I have openGL working fine on my system.The only problem is that when I try to run the executable file, nothing appears unless the full scene has been rendered.In fact, it appears in parts, i.e. updates after a second, then after another second etc...However, earlier, the rendering used to be continuous and I could see each pixel getting rendered in a continuous fashion.

I was trying to get a game to work (scorched 3d) but I kept getting a resolution error. So I did some looking around and found that I had to do something with xorg.conf in /usr/bin/x11 (if I remember). Well I didn't have that file, so I installed a program that had it (and for the life of me, I don't remember what it was). Long story short, I tried to run a different game (foobillard) and it wouldnt run. So I ran from terminal and got an error saying that x11 is not configured with opengl. Now I am mad cuz that was my favorite game. Is there a way to reset x11 and opengl without losing everything?

I play RuneScape most of the time i'm on the computer and i always keep an eye on the performance. Yesterday and the days before, everything was going good, cpu usage it was causing was between 30 and 60%, now it wont go below 70%. It's always 70-99% for some reason :s i have set settings for graphics to OpenGL (they were like that before too with no problem) and it started causing high cpu usage. If i set it to Safe Mode in graphics settings it gets 100%, I never tweaked the drivers, i have a NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT, i have the opengl thingies installed along with my nvidia driver. Ubuntu 10.10 32bit.

I'm trying to find a 64 bit version of OpenGL for Linux. I tried driver from Nvidia, but it turned out that it required a specific graphics card, (which either I don't have, or VMware has trouble noticing that I do. I have a laptop with some Nvidia, Geforce with Cuda card.
In any case, I just need to find 64bit OpenGL for Ubuntu 10.04. I keep finding 32 bit versions, or other versions that don't apply to me.
I'm still kind of new and it's possible that I haven't been looking the most effective places. I tried google and sourceforge, but I couldn't quite find it.
If anyone knows where I can get it, or knows of a better place to look, I would be very grateful.
P.S. I also tried the package manager and the OpenGL site.
