Ubuntu :: Boots Up From Hibernation Is Not Faster?
Feb 15, 2011
Ubuntu booting up from hibernation is not faster compared to complete start up. In windows, you can feel the boot-up is faster if you hibernate your PC earlier. But in ubuntu, i dont feel that, to boot up from hibernation, it takes quite long time, not faster than complete new start-up.

Is there a way to put Linux in hibernation, then reboot and resume when it boots back?
This would be amazing in combination with dual booting.

my desktop pc is acting very strange. cold boots often take up to 10 attempts before the computer successfully boots. after the 1st successful boot, i can expect 1-3 "glitches". here's what happens:
the first few cold boots fail at various points during the boot process. there appears to be no pattern to it. when it happens, the machine is completely locked up. it responds to nothing, except holding in the power switch for 5 seconds. i'll go through this procedure several times.
finally, it will boot all the way to a desktop. from there, once i log it, i can expect it to lock up completely, usually once or twice. and then, finally, the screen will go blank and it will suddenly be back at the login screen.
usually, once i log in that last time, it's at least usable, although hardly stable. watching flash video seems to cause a complete lockup, with the sound looping. it doesn't matter where the content is coming from (videos or similar) nor does it matter which browser i'm using (firefox or chrome). i've stopped visiting videos-type sites in the meantime.
this installation has always been a tad bit screwy. 99% of the time, firefox fails to shut down properly, resulting in a message letting me know that a crash was detected. earlier today, i was alerted to 3 kernel crashes simultaneously.
right now, i'm using the pc, as normal. the random nature of the problems would lead me to believe it was hardware-related, specifically something like memory (ram). however, i installed memtest86+ and ran it. i walked away for 4+ hours. came back, it was running, no errors were found. i stopped the test and booted, trouble-free.
the pc seems to be stable enough for a backup, but this does have me concerned...obviously. i'm debating wiping the drive clean and installing f13, just as a test. if it's screwy as well, it would have to be hardware-related, wouldn't you think??

I didn't know where to post it exactly. You can see the Screenshot at the Tab bar, and it's not the only thing that bugs.. Many things and pictures disturb like this, from Desktop wallpaper and files and folders, to text and pictures.

I currently have the Ubuntu 32 bit 9.10 installed on my laptop. I wanted to install WinXP 64 bit using VirtualBox. My question is: will WinXP 64 bit run faster on Ubuntu 64 bit than it will run on Ubuntu 32 bit (my current OS)? Is the upgrade from Ubuntu 32 bit to Ubuntu 64 bit worth it for running a virtual Windows XP 64 bit?

according to this article i read, its definitely faster. this is what i read: Since 64-bit systems can process twice as many instructions per second as a comparable 32-bit system, 64-bit systems are definitely faster than their 32-bit counterparts. it was from this article link: [URL]... Is this true? I always thought it wouldnt make a difference, besides more memory addressing?

I put together a p4 that has 3 slots for ddr memory and the specs say maximum memory is 2 G at 400 Mhz or 3 G at 333 Mhz. Now, I assume this means that if you install a third memory stick, it will run at 333 Mhz. Is this right? Which would be better out of curiosity?

I am using Ubuntu 10.10 64-Bit Desktop Edition, and I am looking for a faster way to rip CDs, without having to resort to Windows. I try to rip a CD, but it takes 20+ minutes just to get the files copied, then another 5 or so minutes to burn the cd!I have a new SATA interface CD/DVD burner, so I know it is not the hardware.

I am considering installing Linux on my workstation to develop and run fortran codes much faster than windows. I wonder if there is significant speed difference between Linux distros. Especially between Redhat and Ubuntu or Debian. I havent used any Linux distro longer enough to have an idea about its speed while running long codes.

I'm running 9.10, how do I wake up from sleep or hibernation on my Dell XPS notebook? I have no problem putting the comp to sleep/hiber but can't seem to work out the keys to wake it up again.
I don't get any responses from the keys even when I try CAPS LOCK or NUM LOCK, so all I can do is reach for the on/off switch.

I am using uswsusp / s2disk and it hibernates fine. Then, on resume, it apparently completes the resume (reaches 100%) but it never progresses to the actual resumed system and gets stuck on this screen: Before upgrading from 9.04 to 10.04 it worked fine. It does not anymore.

I'm having trouble resuming from hibernation. The splash screen loads up with "Resuming from /dev/sda6" (this is the correct partition) and the HDD light shows it's reading the drive. It then stops reading and the loading animation starts up (I'm running Lucid). Then nothing, just the animation. I recently updated initramfs-tools to 0.98ubuntu2~lucid as hibernation wouldn't work at all with the old version (see [URL]). I've also installed this script because of errors on hibernation.
I've posted the output from recovery mode after hibernation below:

ASUS P5Q Deluxe, Intel Core 2 Duo, GeForce 8800, 4GB RAM, USB keyboard and mouse never had problems with suspend and hibernation in Ubuntu. Until the latest version 10.10. Both before and after installing the proprietary Nvidia drivers, the system enters the sleep and hibernate but I can not wake up properly. Specifically, while it looks as it starts up, but not fires up the X server. Oddly - operate only CTRL + ALT + F1-12. You can switch to the text cosole, see the "incentive" to sign but other keys do not work and nothing can be entered. Not working CTRL + ALT + DEL as well, so you need to turn off the system power.

I am currently backing up my data but find that it takes way to long to do a rsync, it takes forever to just find the differences and transfer them.Out of 3 separate rsyncs the main one that is slow is my www.skins.be mirror directory which is 41GB and has 392,200 files, sorted into multiple directories. Which grows by around 100 every couple days.I think that something that would be able to track changes by inotify time on directories will speed it up since Picasa sure finds the changes fast when I open it and it is tracking over 26,200 pictures. I just don't know of a backup solution that does that.

I need to find a fast way to copy a folder containing about 2 terabytes over my home network to another Ubuntu machine. In the past I have used RSYNC over ssh, but this is far too slow for this much data (probably the ssh encryption overhead slowing things down)I have looked at using SAMBA, but this seems geared for a mixed Linux/Windows network. Also I don't know if SAMBA will be appreciably faster.

One of the most common tasks I perform is browsing for files. I have always wanted my file manager to be lightning fast. That is, I open it and it loads directories instantly. No waiting, just opening them right away. This remained always a wish, as in Windows and Ubuntu on a variety of machines I always see that it takes a little while for the program to load directories. I am not talking about folders with thousands of files or anything special. However, I have seen others who have Windows (XP in this case), and their Explorer opens right away. Browsing folders is very much instant.
Is there any way to achieve the same in Nautilus? The other computer is not very modern or super fast, at all.
I have a laptop with SSD drive which I hoped would speed up this process, but this is not the case. On both my laptop and desktop I often see the 'loading' symbol, and files often appear after the folder view has opened (they just appear all of a sudden). This happens with folders I rarely visit but also with folders I often open.
How are others' experiences? Can Nautilus be instant? Is this a configuration tweak or hardware issue?

I apologize in advance.. I searched and there is way too much information on this board and wasnt sure what was applicable to my case. I suspect that I prematurely closed the lid on my netbook last night when shutting down...my wife heard beeping noises early this morning but wasnt sure where they came from. I think it was the netbook forcing shutdown from hibernation due to low batteries.
Computer wouldnt boot this morning and I get the following error code...

This may be a noob question, but I can't find the option to set the computer to hibernate after a given idle time. In the Power options there is an option to suspend, but not to hibernate.
Is there other way to set the hibernation time?

Since I tested with suspending/hibernating my laptop, the system seems to have lost the swap partition. That is to say: it cannot find it at boot anymore. Some message shows during boot like "waiting for device listed in fstab: swap" or something and then it continues toboot normally. When I start the systemmonitor it reports Swap usage 0 byte out of 0 byte.
I checked my devices with
Code:
blkid
in terminal and it lists one of the partitions with its UUID as TYPE="swap".
Then I opened fstab with
Code:
sudo mousepad /etc/fstab
and noticed the line for the swap partition was using a completely different UUID. After changing the UUID to the correct (new) one and reactivatin swap with
Code:
sudo swapon -a
in terminal, all was well again but...
How could the UUID suddenly have changed? Did that indeed have something to do with trying (and failing) Suspend and Hibernate ? If so, should I stay away from those features (that served me well under Windows) or is there something to be done about it?

A few days ago, after I made some changes on my lucid system, hibernation is not possible any more, that is, if I choose hibernation, everything seems to go fine but at the next boot, the image is not read by the kernel and normal boot happens. Hibernation is very important to me, what can I do go get it back ?

I have a Microsoft LX-3000 USB headset that has been working fine for me on all of my Ubuntu machines... until today. I accidentally clicked on "Hibernate" instead of "Shut Down" on my Lucid laptop this morning, and something seemed a little off about the hibernation process, although I don't remember exactly what happened. Anyway, since I woke this machine up, I can't get sound out of the headset. I've plugged it into multiple USB ports and can still use the microphone and the volume controls just fine, but there's no output. (Yes, I've made sure the device is enabled for output in my sound preferences).

I have Unbuntu 10.4 installed on a netbook. It is the only OS installed so no GRUB menu.
It hibernated last night, and now when I try to boot it hits the initial few steps in the boot process and then reboots.
Any thoughts on how to fix this problem. I have tried to access a GRUB menu w/ the ESC key but no dice.
