View 1 RepliesBasically ubuntu 10.04 did an upgrade about a month ago, since then, GNOME has been playing up - it just displays in the default 'theme' rather than the one ubuntu style i choose.
secondly, there is no facility to manage the windows on screen - by that i mean to close minimise/maximise windows or even drag them round the screen as the 'border' around the application isnt there.Im using xfce as a workaround at the moment , but would like to get GNOME sorted if possible for what its worth this is on my compaq nx9005 laptop, upgrades at the same time on my main pc didnt suffer the same fate.
iam using an aircel connection in my mobile and i was able to use its pocket internet facility in my pc using windows operating system.but when i tried it in ubuntu9.10,i was unsuccessful.iam using NOKIA 6600 and it has been connected to the pc using a bluetooth dongle as my phone has no usb connection facility.when using ubuntu 9.10 bluetooth was automatically enabled in my pc.In terminal window i typed the following commands
"sudo hcitool scan" and my phone was detected as
"12:12:12:12:12:12 NOKIA". then i typed
"sudo sdptool browse 12:12:12:12:12:12" and i got the result as
"failed connection to sdp server on 12:12:12:12:12:12:connection reset by peer".
So far I have tried PING, rsync, Clonezilla and tar. All have one or another problem. I'm sure that this is in part to my own ignorance and partly due to running the 64 bit version of Karmic, but I cannot seem to find anyone who has real answers.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI can't find the repair facility when running the openSUSE 11.3 install DVD. In earlier editions it was on the Installation Mode screen, three options:
New Installation
Update
Other Options
Under Other Options there used to be a repair function. I can't find the repair facility in 11.3. Is it now located somewhere else, or has it been removed?
i want to use an ubuntu server (2.6.31-17-generic #54-Ubuntu SMP) as the central syslog server but the syslog messages does not show the priority and facility information in ubuntu. priority and facility are shown in aix by default and i have many aix servers can be used as the central syslog server, but i prefer using ubuntu if it can provide me these details.

The facility it is using is "4 - security/authorization messages". Is there anyway to configure syslog so that it writes the sec/auth logs in different places for both the local machine and the remote machine?

View 1 Replies View Relatedone of these "WiFi works in Gnome, not in KDE" threads, but I have been all over google and hundreds of threads across different sites and can't figure this one out.As mentioned, wireless is peachy in Gnome, unfortunately I like KDE and I'm more productive using it (when I have internet). Wired network works fine in KDE, and my network card

View 4 Replies View RelatedSystem Information:openSUSE v11.2 32-bitdesktop: KDE 4.x (.3 I think)Background info: Installed openSUSE 11.2 on an old HP laptop this morning. I've been trying to set up my wireless connection since. After 2-ish hours of searchingupport forums, I managed to use network manager to connect to my home wireless network via WEP, I will say now that I've had lots of trouble.
I've finally been able to connect to my network, to a point. The NetworkManager in openSUSE says that the wireless connection is active. I can verify this by saying that on the other conputers in my house (winXP, win7, and Ubuntu v9) I have been able to ping this openSUSE computer and my router recognizes it as part of the network. Here is where the problem arises: I cannot access the internet from the openSUSE machine, with a domain name or by trying to type in an ip address, and I cannot ping other computers on my network with it.
My wireless is a libertas 88w8335. Suse 11.4 just installed. For this one, I need a windows driver with ndiswrapper. ndiswrapper is installed, and the driver as well.
I can see my networks with iwlist scan my network is set up in yast with ifup (I can scan the networks and find mine), but I cannot connect to my Acces point : there is no SSID with iwconfig.
I'm having trouble setting up my desktop pc to access the internet via my wireless router. i have tried to set it up in networkmanager (it shows as connected when clicking on the NM icon) but when loading firefox or when trying to update opensuse i just cannot get a connection.

I'm able to configure my Wireless network to connect with an AP with WEP key but...
Now I'm at home, I've a WPA2 key (my router now is supporting both, WPA and WPA2). I used WICD to connect but no success at all! It just stops with "Connection failed: Could not contact the wireless access point"
if I type IWLIST key:
Code:

I moved my server and network equipment, and now the wireless works but I cannot get my server online. I host a website, so this is kind of urgent.
I have a wireless router and can access the internet fine on my laptop. My server is wired & connected to the router. It sets up the networking properly.. ifconfig has an ip address, the default gateway is present. But I cannot ping google, or even the router. It says destination host unreachable.
So I go back to the laptop to check the router settings.. sometimes it likes to assign the server the wrong internal ip. But, I can't access the router settings either! The page (192.168.1.1) times out. Same with trying to ping the router. How can the laptop be online if it can't reach the router?
Oddly, ifconfig on my laptop reports an ip address starting with 99.233. It's always given me an internal address starting with 192.168. What's going on here? Is the router not allocating an internal ip? I use wicd to connect, if it's relevant.
We have a windows laptop that can only get a "local connection". Now it does sound like the router is forwarding directly to my laptop, instead of allocating internal ips.
I have a dual boot in windows 7 and ubuntu. WiFi came with windows 7 but doesn't work at all in ubuntu. There are no drivers in my hardware drivers. I use one of those laptops that came with a built in atheros wireless adapter.

My university has a central leased line that is split into wired and wireless. While plugged into the wired network i can access all the windows shares. However when on the wireless network, i cant access the wired shares. Windows laptops can however access them, but directly entering the share name ( \share-name)
I am using Ubuntu 10.04.
I cant connect to the internet with my wireless( or my lan for that matter, but i mainly want to use my wireless). I am going to follow the ticket provided by one of the sticky threads [URL]

Currently I have a HP G62 Laptop and it's been great but recently I've started getting really inconsistent wireless access. When I boot up the computer - it will connect to the wireless and work for awhile but 10-15 minutes later, websites stop loading entirely so I have to restart to get it to reconnect. If I don't restart and disconnect/reconnect... it doesn't do anything, it shows it trying to connect and then a weird "hiccup" happens and it tries again until it finally decides that it cannot connect. I'm running the latest version of Ubuntu I believe.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have problem to access the Internet, with Ubuntu 10.04. In Windows I access the Internet in this way: Create a PPPoE Connection (with username and password), after this connect to a Wireless Network called WebSTAR (I have Wireless modem in my family PC), and connect to PPPoE Connection. After these steps the Internet works fine. .But I have same problems with Ubuntu. First I see the Network named "WebSTAR" but I can`t connect to it. And I try many times to join the Internet with "sudo pppoeconf" command in Terminal, but didn't work.

Intel PRO/Wireless Drivers for Microsoft Windows 7 10-2009 13.0
>>>> Intel Wireless WiFi Link 5300 Intel Wireless WiFi Link 5100
Broadcom Wireless LAN Driver for Microsoft Windows 7 10-2009 5.60.18.8
>>>> Broadcom 43224AG 802.11 a/b/g/draft-n WiFi Adapter
My question is, how do I get wireless access in Slackware? I already have it set up to work with an wired connection but I really need the wireless access to make the OS functional for me to use.
I have a Sonicwall access point, which I am able to set up through the interface, but after that I am unable to achieve a connection through my wireless card. I have a good understanding of everything involved, but really have no hands on experience when it comes to networking.
Code:
lspci
00:00.0 Host bridge: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] 735 Host (rev 01)
00:01.0 PCI bridge: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] Virtual PCI-to-PCI bridge (AGP)
[code]....
Also, I should have mentioned that @ the interface for the Sonicwall it said that "no DNS server had been specified", but I set it up for DHCP, and I thought my ISP is using PPPoE (which I also thought used DHCP).
Running Ubuntu 9.10 Ive just got my wireless connection working after first having got the wired eth0 connection working.
With the wired connection I could SSH into my server through my firewall/router (via a forward). I can run up VNC, from there firefox, browse the web - all is well.
I have now setup the wireless connection, using a static IP, and I can likewise SSH into my server. I can run up VNC. I can ping my router. I can log onto it via VNC. I can browse to my router. But I cant browse the internet.
But I cant ping google.com. The reason is there is no host lookup service. Nslookup eventually says no servers could be reached.
So specifically, if I ping www.google.com Im told "unknown host". If I do an NSlookup on it I get timeout, no servers could be reached. However if I ping 66.102.11.104 I get responses.
I see no relevant entries in my firewall log.
Unfortunately I cant traceroute because the package isnt found - and of course I cant install it because I have no internet !
Strangely (to me at least !) if I then tunnel through SSH and browse the web, I have no problems. It works ? I know I am browsing through my SSH tunnel because whatsmyip gives the IP of my router at home, not where Ive SSHd in from. I can surf just fine.
why I cant do host lookups any more (and this did work with my wired connection, but whether its related to my change to wireless, or static IPs or both I cant be sure - it certainly appeared to happen at the same time). And, more to the point, what I need to look for/do to rectify it ?
As a bonus Id be interested in why I can SSH and browse via tunnelling but not direct from my server (via VNC). Just for interests sake !
if config reports :

I just installed the wicd network manager and when i was setting it up it said it couldn't find the ip address so when i input the address its saying it can't connect to a wireless access point. I am using wireless that has worked with the default network manager but will not work with this one.
