Ubuntu :: Not Able To Switch Between Workspaces / Make It Possible?
Aug 1, 2010Can't switch between workspaces anymore. Not by shortcuts, neither by clicking. I c�n move windows to another workspace, but i just can't acces them.

Mar 18, 2011I just installed 10.04 couple hours ago and i installled compiz and i had my desktop in a 3d cube and i could rotate it and stuff i had it all workingthen...i think i mashed some buttons idk what i did but now i can't switch workspaces at all. Ctrl-alt- and left click doesnt work ctrl-alt- arrow keys dont work i cant swtich workspaces. the only way i can is to use the work space switcher on the panel...compiz says i have the cube enabled and i have 4 workspaces and all that i just can't rotate the desktop. the keyboard shortcuts are still there i just dont know why i they aren't working

just love the game, I play when things are quiet on the system. but I can not figure out to swap workspaces. the ctr-alt-right/left doesn't work in Sauerbraten. I run it in it's own workspace, but when I need to change to the other workspace with all my "work" apps I have to exit the game (sometimes right in the middle of a roll) and then I can switch to the work workspace
needless to say, in the middle of lost, level 9 or any others. it's a bummer to have to quit out to deal with a 30 second issue.

May 25, 2011I've tried setting short cut keys to switch workspaces with no luck. I've tried a couple of different combination of keys and none have worked. The workspace switcher works but it's sometimes a bit anoying to reach for the mouse and a lot easier to just kit a couple of keys.

Dec 20, 2010I have Ubuntu 10.04 on my [newer] Asus laptop.This laptop is my primary computer and I am dual booting Windows 7 ultimate [64-bit] & Ubuntu [64-bit].I really want to break out my DBAN CD [it's a program to format the hard drive completely] and just have Ubuntu on my laptop... but there are two factors restricting me to do this b/c .I need Windows for them [as of now, that is.]
1] I record music on my laptop using this usb "soundcard" dongle. It's made by M-audio and Ubuntu doesn't pick it up, and I have no idea.how to enable it for recording. 2] I can't seem to make my screen any brighter on my laptop. Windows 7 is very bright, but my Ubuntu installation is at full brightness and is still dull. Or would upgrading to the 10.10 version fix it?
Ubuntu Installation :: Wanting To Make More Permanent Switch Via External HD?
Jun 10, 2010The idea is that I got to grips with Linux a couple of times in the past; most recently in a Radio Astronomy class (where we had to use openSUSE and terminals 24/7). I loved it so much that I fired up Wubi on my laptop and I am having a play.
Then I loved it even more.
So here's the plan:
Find Windows (Vista) CD *sigh*
Get 500 GB external Hard Drive
Backup files to HD (60 GB max)
Reformat Laptop & Reinstall Windows

To my understanding, this gives me a blank slate with a lot of room to play with because of the external HD. If this is not possible/too risky etc. then what are the best alternatives?
The plan is to make my primary OS Ubuntu. The way I figured, to keep things simple, is to keep the laptop's HD with Windows as 'normal'. I would thus install Ubuntu to the external HD, and put my files etc. on that.
Now, is that possible for a clean installation? Ideally, it would be fantastic if the boot can be configured so it would boot Ubuntu if the HD is connected, and Windows if not.

Also, make sure that it only changes desktops when the mouse is over an empty desktop because I got it working once but the mouse wheel would change desktops all the time, even when I was trying to scroll through a webpage or document.

Within it, I cannot use Alt-Tab to move between multiple windows. I don't have access to moving between workspaces; rather weirdly, I can move a window to a different workspace by right clicking on the application and selecting to move it to a different workspace but I cannot use Ctrl-Alt-Right or Left to move between workspaces, nor can I use Ctrl-Alt-Shift-Left or Right to move a window from one workspace to another.
I have checked the Keyboard Shortcuts under the System->Preferences side. Alt-Tab, Ctrl-Alt-Right/Left and Ctrl-Alt-Shift-Right/Left are all set as the commands for Moving between Windows using the popup window, moving to the right/left workspace and moving a window to the right/left workspace respectively.
I've seen a lot of people saying that they have problems when they've got compiz installed and alt-tab causes problems with this, but I don't have compiz installed.
Since I used sudo apt-get upgrade -d from my old 10.04 Netbook Edition, am I missing packages to correctly run the Desktop Edition?
Note: Within the Netbook Edition, I can use multiple workspaces and Alt-Tab does work, but the UI is very slow and causes the system to lag whenever I open an application.

However, I went to turn on some compiz effects (to improve the visual ergonomics of my work environment), and now I notice workspaces are acting a bit strange.I can no longer drag a window onto one of the workspace boxes in the bottom right to move the window. Also, if I left click the workspaces pane and go into properties, I can now only change the rows and columns, not the workspace names. This is a bit strange, and I see no reason that enabling compiz should cause this kind of problem.I can right click a title bar and send the window to a different workspace that way, but because they're not named, it's hard for me to organize my desktop this way

And the files that were on the desktop in Workspace #1 were not there in any of the other Workspaces, but now in 10.04 they are. Is this the way it should be? Aug 12, 2010Multiple workspaces don't seem to work on this computer in Ubuntu 9.04, though they have in virtually every other distribution (including Ubuntu 8). The relevant specs of this computer:
* 2.0 GHz Pentium 4
* 512 MB RDRAM (arrrggghhh!)
* ATI Radeon 7500 64 MB Graphics Card
I've tried other steps, including adding the Workspace Switcher applet. Indeed it is present. However, clicking on another workspace does absolutely nothing, and "sending" a window to, say, Workspace 3, just makes it disappear. Likewise, CompizConfig Settings Manager seems to be useless in this situation too. I have had success with multiple virtual desktops in almost every other distribution of Linux on this computer, usually right out of the box.

When I click the workspace switcher, and press "preferences", the preferences screen flickers like crazy, and I can't change it.
