Ubuntu :: Why Can't Drag Windows To Other Workspaces
Jul 2, 2010
So I upgraded from Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.4, and the first thing I notice is that I can't drag the windows to other workspaces except from the small box down on the left, which is too small and annoying for me, I want to drag the window from the title bar. I can't find where to change that in the system, does anyone know how?

Well i was playing with some of the features Compiz has to offer, and im liking some of the stuff, i was using wobbly windows yesterday and it was perfectly fine, so i set it and left it, today i try and play around with it and the windows don't wobble when i drag them, however they do when i minimize or maximize.

in Ubuntu 9.10 I was able to move windows on the fly between workspaces, but now I can't in Lucid! I should right click on a window and tell it to move right or left. I hate to do that!

How do I enable the functionality that makes it's possible to switch desktop when dragging a window to the screen-edges?

Since upgrading from Maverick to Natty (and re-enabling Desktop Cube/Cube Rotation in Compiz) I am unable to drag windows any more. I'm sure this'll be diagnostically useful; if I use the window context menu/drop-down and select Move, that also does nothing. Also, the window resize hovers do nothing, but the double-click full size|restore/middle and right click the maximize gadget to horizontally|vertically maximize do work. Further, the window management shortcuts to move windows do nothing. If I turn off Desktop Cube/Cube Rotation and go back to Wall/Expo, I still can't move windows using any of the methods mentioned in my previous update.

I just installed 11.04 and I'm trying to set up dual monitors. I've installed the nvidia drivers and set the monitors to separate xscreen mode. It works fine, the mouse cursor moves freely between monitors, but when I try to drag windows over, it just wants to resize them to half screen. I've tried disabling grid in ccsm, and it stops the resizing thing, but I still can't drag the windows across.

I started using Linux when Karmic came out, so I'm a bit of a decorated newb. Anyway, I upgraded to Lucid and noticed something that I can't do anymore. I have a dual-screen setup with 2 workstations. I can drag windows from one screen to the next, but when I try to drag it over to another workstation, nothing happens anymore. The only way I can get it to work now is if I hold down the cursor on the desired window and hit Ctrl + Alt + L/R. How do I report this as a bug if it is indeed one? All I can find is a link to join a bug fixing team.

In order to correct bug #459647 in compiz (as I have done on 2 other PCs) I downloaded, modified, and compiled the source with apt-src and make. Then I installed the produced .deb files with dpkg -i. For whatever reason the new compiz didn't have wobbly windows nor could I switch workspaces. Compiz is running and I do know however that compositing is working as Docky is still functional (and doesn't really work without compositing).
So I uninstalled all of the compiz packages and reinstalled the versions from the official repository. The same issue remained. During this time I have restarted my computer several times with different configurations. I tried to install compiz packages from the [URL]...ubuntu PPA and still the same problems exist. I'm not sure if there are any other problems that I haven't noticed yet. Finally, in an attempt to fully purge my computer of all things compiz and start over, I got the following error:
Code:
masen@dv6000m:~$ sudo apt-get autoremove --purge compiz*
[sudo] password for masen:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Couldn't find package compiz-code
masen@dv6000m:~$
I'm not sure what "compiz-code" is, but that's the name of the folder that I downloaded the source into. After this command, no packages are removed. I'm currently running Lucid 10.4.1 with all the latest updates. My graphics card is an Intel 945M mobile chipset. I run a similar configuration on 2 other computers with no issues. Has anyone ever seen this? Or have any idea how I can get compiz-code out of my package database. I know the problems I'm encountering aren't high priority, but not having workspaces gets annoying and I have no clue what else is broken with my 'half-broken' compiz.

1. I can no longer drag windows from one workspace to another. Instead I have to drag them so they are off screen and then switch workspaces and drag it the rest of the way. Is there anyway I can change this.
2. Rhythm Box no longer minimizes into the to the top panel into the notification area icon. Is there anyway I can change this?
3. The volume control is now horizontal, no longer vertical is there a way I can change this?

So I have four monitors set up on Debian Lenny. They all work, but I can't drag windows to any other screens. I can open terminal on one screen and web browser on another fine, but if I try to open web browser on one screen and open it again on another it automatically goes to the same screen it is already open on. I need the four screens for network monitoring through the web browser. So I need one instance of web browser opened on each screen and can't do it. Here is my xorg.conf file.
Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier "X.org Configured"
Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0
Screen 1 "Screen1" RightOf "Screen0"
Screen 2 "Screen2" RightOf "Screen1"
Screen 3 "Screen3" RightOf "Screen2"
InputDevice "Mouse0" "CorePointer"
InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard"
Option "Xinerama" "3"
EndSection .....

I have opened dolphin and some other application (avidemux, dolphin, firefox, etc). in the first window (dolphin) i have a file. i drag it to another window/application and if i release the left-button of mouse, the window/application of the drag destination become active (raise). is it any way to make it to come in front/top (active) once mouse is over window while still dragging, before releasing the mouse? there is "focus" stings (focus under mouse/raise with the delay) in "windows Behavior". the focus under mouse is working fine, but is not working while dragging. it would be very handy to see where i drop the file, especially if i only see a small partition of the destination window, which is behind other windows.

I'm fairly new to ubuntu and I've been messing around with customizing my desktop/UI over the past week or so and I must have messed something up. After I got sick of how slow Wallpapoz was to change backgrounds between workspaces (I'm using GNOME) I turned on the Wallpaper plugin in Compiz and turned off the nautilus desktop. That worked great for the backgrounds but now whenever I try to drag windows around the cursor shudders and shakes and the wondows won't move smoothly. I eventually get them to where I want them to go but it's very annoying.
So far, I have re-enabled the nautilus desktop and reinstalled nautilus with synaptic, neither of which did anything.

I recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my laptop. I've got access to both the Netbook Edition and the Desktop Edition, so I tried booting into the Desktop Edition since I prefer to use this.
Within it, I cannot use Alt-Tab to move between multiple windows. I don't have access to moving between workspaces; rather weirdly, I can move a window to a different workspace by right clicking on the application and selecting to move it to a different workspace but I cannot use Ctrl-Alt-Right or Left to move between workspaces, nor can I use Ctrl-Alt-Shift-Left or Right to move a window from one workspace to another.
I have checked the Keyboard Shortcuts under the System->Preferences side. Alt-Tab, Ctrl-Alt-Right/Left and Ctrl-Alt-Shift-Right/Left are all set as the commands for Moving between Windows using the popup window, moving to the right/left workspace and moving a window to the right/left workspace respectively.
I've seen a lot of people saying that they have problems when they've got compiz installed and alt-tab causes problems with this, but I don't have compiz installed.
Since I used sudo apt-get upgrade -d from my old 10.04 Netbook Edition, am I missing packages to correctly run the Desktop Edition?
Note: Within the Netbook Edition, I can use multiple workspaces and Alt-Tab does work, but the UI is very slow and causes the system to lag whenever I open an application.

I had named all my workspaces earlier today, and it was great help in organizing my workflow. However, I went to turn on some compiz effects (to improve the visual ergonomics of my work environment), and now I notice workspaces are acting a bit strange.I can no longer drag a window onto one of the workspace boxes in the bottom right to move the window. Also, if I left click the workspaces pane and go into properties, I can now only change the rows and columns, not the workspace names. This is a bit strange, and I see no reason that enabling compiz should cause this kind of problem.I can right click a title bar and send the window to a different workspace that way, but because they're not named, it's hard for me to organize my desktop this way

How can I make workspaces have names under 10.04? Under 9.10 I can given different workspaces different names, under 10.04 I can't. Workspace-switcher-preferences has less options.

I normally don't switch between workspaces. In older versions I had done it just to try it out. And the files that were on the desktop in Workspace #1 were not there in any of the other Workspaces, but now in 10.04 they are. Is this the way it should be? Or is there something I need to set to have a clean desktop in the other Workspaces?

Switching workspaces in Sauerbraten
just love the game, I play when things are quiet on the system. but I can not figure out to swap workspaces. the ctr-alt-right/left doesn't work in Sauerbraten. I run it in it's own workspace, but when I need to change to the other workspace with all my "work" apps I have to exit the game (sometimes right in the middle of a roll) and then I can switch to the work workspace
needless to say, in the middle of lost, level 9 or any others. it's a bummer to have to quit out to deal with a 30 second issue.

Just like the title said, I was fooling around with different workspaces - seeing if I could close a program in one workspace while working in another - and I seem to have either deleted or hidden all of my workspaces!I've already tried the gconf commands and they don't seem to work at all.I'm running 11.04.TYOK... a quick update. I can get to my other workspaces using ctr+alt+ right arrow, so the workspaces are still there, I've just hidden or removed the switcher applet!
