Jan 22, 2010I like my bottom panel to auto hide. I have this setup on 2 computers. On one computer, it's much faster with hiding/showing than the other computer.Could it be a performance thing that effects it? mean, the one that's quicker is a quad core with 4gb of ram, whereas the one that's slower is a pentium 4 with 1gb of ram.

Aug 21, 2009I like to autohide my panel. But for some reason, it won't show unless I mouse over one of the bottom corners of the screen. The whole bottom edge where the panel hides should summon it if I mouse over, and I have been able to do this before, but now, after a system update, it only appears when I mouse over those bottom two corners. Does anyone else get this, or know how to fix it?

Oct 3, 2010I have the panel (taskbar) positioned on top. I then turned on "auto hide" in the panel properties (Gnome) to maximize the screen.The panel surely disappeared. The problem is that I cannot get it back no matter how much I hoover or click with the mouse - it is gone!...So how do I get it back??? I am rather new to Linux, but I figure that there should be a config file somewhere where I can set "auto hide" to false or something like this.

Jul 2, 2011I have a workspace switcher on one of my panels, and it has ten columns by one row. However, when Ubuntu first starts up, it only shows four workspaces. By screwing around with the settings, I eventually get it to show all ten, but it would be nice if I didn't have to do that. What is going on?

It being gone reminds me of my X days I really dont want to..Also, I dont want to auto hide it, but just sent to background when an application is maximized. (i use chrome for browsing - when maximized the tabs are at the top and if set to auto hide, i keep revealing it while changing tabs which is annoying. )

May 3, 2011I've just installed Ubuntu 11.04 on my netbook. Having had a bit of a play with Unity I found it not to my taste, so I've switched to "Ubuntu Classic" - Gnome without Unity - on the login screen. For a while now I've organised my work using the Workspace Switcher Gnome applet. I use five workspaces, each named to identify the type of stuff that goes on in it.
11.04 comes with Workspace Switcher version 2.32.1 - right clicking it and clicking on Preferences gives a stripped down preferences dialogue, no longer including fields allowing the user to define workspace names. Ubuntu 10.04, for example, uses Workspace Switcher 2.30.2 which did allow for workspace names to be defined via the Workspace Switcher Preferences dialogue. I'd really like to be able to define workspace names and have them show in the Workspace Switcher in the panel.

Ubuntu :: Hide Partitions/Drives From Nautilus (side Panel)?
May 29, 2010I have 2 drives formatted NTFS, which I'm mounting with /etc/fstab to ~/Movies/ and ~/Music/ and an EXT4 partition on my primary drive for games, mounted to ~/Roms/ and I would like for these drives to NOT show up in the side panel of nautilus.
I've been doing some looking around, and what I've found so far is that supposedly if you mount a partition/drive somewhere besides /media/ nautilus will ignore it. I'm finding this not to be the case, and it's driving me bonkers. here's my fstab:

May 21, 2011I like 11.04 with Unity however I would like to find a method of managing workspaces with mouse (not keyboard) which gives constant visual feedback and is faster than using the launcher bar, which although not 'slow', takes time to appear and it then takes time to locate the (non movable) desktop switcher item.I happily adopt most of what 11.04 (Unity) offers, however, I really still miss the good visual feedback and the single click action that the lower panel (classic) desktop switcher used. Is there a way of me using some item in unity which is closely similar?

Ubuntu :: After Adding 'killall Gnome-panel' To The Startup Applications Does The Panel Fail To Load Altogether
Dec 4, 2010Regarding the gnome-panel in Ubuntu (64 bit).... I discovered some time ago that I wasn't the only one who routinely (every login) had their gnome-panel appear butchered, for which Alt-F2 then 'killall gnome-panel' would easily fix.
Having become impatient with this over the past 8 months, I decided I would automate the process and so cofiguring the startup applications seemed like a perfectly logical choice to me. Turns out I was wrong. After adding 'killall gnome-panel' to the startup applications not only does the panel fail to load altogether now, but Alt-F2 doesn't even work.
I tried Ctl-Alt-F1 and working with the graphics-free mode thinking I could somehow navigate to the startup apps config file and edit it, but I don't know where it is or how to edit it without logging in as root and I certainly don't know of any 'root password'.

May 17, 2011So I just updated my IdeaPad to Natty and played around with Unity. The performane was absolutely unbearable so I installed Unity2D from the software center. Now when I start the session everything seems to be fine at first. Whenever I move the mouse over the panel though it seems to switch to my old gnome-panel from the "Classic" session (with some missing icons). When I move the mouse over that panel again it switches back to the Unity panel style. What is going on? Can I fix this somehow? I will have to use the classic session until I get a working consistent behavior

I just want to hide them from the netbook-laucher but anything I've tried worked. I have two Windows / NTFS partitions wich are readeable/writable in ubuntu Lucid Lynx Netbook Remix. One is the C: partition, the other is the boot partition from Windows 7. This computer is for a public place so I can't let them just visible. To hide them I try few things :

May 12, 2010I've installed Ubuntu 10.4 and the gnome-panel appears half, as you can see in the attached picture, if I try resolutions over 1024x768.If I kill the gnome-panel and it restarts, or if I change its properties, it became OK, but in startup it appears like the image.I've tried other Gnome 2.3 based distributions and occurs the same issue. With Gnome 2.28 it doesn't occurs. Then ii seems a gnome 2.3 problem.
PD: My grafic card is a Matrox G550.

Feb 25, 2011I am trying to completely hide the gnome panels on my desktop. When using auto-hide there is still a visible line of about 1 pixel, and the panels are still there anyways. I have gone into gconf-editor and changed the autohide size to 0 and it still doesn't completely hide it or make them so when i hover near them they don't appear. I am also not looking to completely delete the panels either. I went into gconf again and blanked out the required_components field, (didn't turn out the way i expected, lol), and had to start gnome-panel manually afterwards and lost a lot of functionality in the OS.
I found this tutorial last year for sending gnome-panel to the widget layer for Ubuntu, but cannot get it to work in Fedora.This works perfectly in Ubuntu (once you log-out), but it doesn't work in Fedora. Does anyone have any suggestions on how i can this exact same thing to work in Fedora. It seems like it tries to work, but maybe my syntax is wrong or something.
