I just installed the new version of ubuntu. But after install I found out I cant connect to the internet, so I cant install drivers. My computer is an Acer Aspire 5920 What do I have to do too connect to the internet? Do I have to download the ethernet driver and install so I can download and install the others? And how do I install the driver? and where can I find it? By the way, I am a total n00b on ubuntu.

after few years being limited with my pc configuration (windows OS) I realized that linux or it's distributions is the best invention in 21 century. And finally I am starting use it. openSUSE 11.4 installaition succesful, I updated it and it looks I don;t have any problems, but I got few questions.
1. How install older version of mozilla firefox internet browser here? I can't install some plugins because it's a firefox beta 12 version, for example. I am quake fan, o I like play quake live, but i can't install quake plugin, because my firefox is beta version.
2. Does I got all drivers instantly installed to my mashine? ATI video drivers, sound drivers ect??
3. Are there any How-To guides which can teach me, how I can improve my desktop? gadgets, 3D desktop ect...?
I'll try and make this short because I'm very tired. I have Windows 7,needed to install Ubuntu to test something regarding a problem with 7, I installed Ubuntu, no problems. I got it all up and running, and I can't get the drivers for it. It doesn't already have my wireless drivers, so I can't get on the internet to get my drivers.How would I go about getting my needed drivers?
View 14 Replies View RelatedI installed Ubuntu 11.04 on my mom's Inspiron 1521 and before I had it on there I had a older version of ubuntu which worked fine and could connect to the Internet, but since my mother isn't that well educated in computers and wants a simple to use UI, Ubuntu came into mind.
Well after installing ubuntu for a hour or two and trying to configure the drivers to allow Internet access with out a USB adapter using the BCM4311 I tried everything such as following the pretty basic tutorials online on installing the drivers with no luck. I check the additional drivers application and it's telling me the drivers are installed properly and are okay. ... Well, why am I not able to find a list of wifi connections yet?
I did the update command and updated every package on the machine. I reinstalled the kernal drivers for the BCM4311. I even installed the installer for the kernal device and nothing seems to be working.
I have three machines(2x Dell Optiplex GX620, 1x Dell Optiplex 330) and I salvaged a D-Link Ethernet card from another PC, and I want to put it in the Optiplex 330. I was wondering if there was something I needed to do before I take the server offline and install it and how do I find the drivers for it? Or does Ubuntu go ahead and do that?
And my second question is, once I get the network card installed, how do I share the internet connection of that machine with another server? And how would I SSH in to the server connected to the other? I'm guessing that I have to set up some ports to do that, but I don't know how as I am very new to the Ubuntu Server scene and I am doing this for educational purposes.
I have a wireless card that needs the Broadcom B4311 Rev. 1 driver but I don't have a way to download that driver since I don't have wireless access since the driver isn't installed. I'm running Linux Mint Debian x64.
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy Internet connection works fine when I boot Ubuntu with the CD and it does not work when I boot from the Hard Drive. It was working then it stopped. I tried to diagnose the problem but I am not familiar with Linux.
I opened a Terminal window and entered ipconfig (don't laugh ... sadly, i've been in Windows for too long) ipconfig was something that could not be found in my terminal window so i exited.
Next it was System->Administration->Network Tools. I ping'd www.yahoo.com and it said it could not find it. hmmmm. Let's see if restarting the system will fix it.
I did a shutdown and when it came back up; same problem. Ok, i really didn't think it would magically correct itself; this is Linux after all. Windows? Well sometimes you can fix things by turning them off and on. Next, another shutdown and I rebooted with the CD instead of the Hard drive and here I sit entering this help question in.
I am guessing that a file or setting got changed in /etc/someplace and I am not even sure of that. Can anyone point me in the correct direction? I am assuming that there is a setting which is correct in the CD version that is not not correct in the HD version and somehow i need to find what it is and synchronize it with the CD version.
I made my Ubuntu-server(with GNOME desktop) unbootable after playing with the binary drivers for nvidia(my card is gtx 470). I was able to use it in the past with the proprietary drivers, but somehow I tweaked some settings, tried to install new drivers etc and actually I don't remember much of what I did because I had finals at school so my ubuntu install just remained unbootable like that. All I know is that I can't even boot in recovery mode (command line). I tried to boot with a live cd, chroot into the ubuntu partition and fix the graphics but it didn't work.
View 7 Replies View RelatedAfter installing I could not boot. In reading several posts I came to the conclusion that I needed nVidia drivers. I installed v173 nVidia drivers & after a few tries got it to boot. But, not somethings didn't work, like Hardware Drivers, Synaptic Package Manage wouldn't search & some software wouldn't open. I tried to update in terminal sudo apt-get update, then sudo apt-get upgrade (I did this before installing v173).
It says:

After upgrading to natty alpha I enabled the nvida graphics drivers. Now I can't boot and get stuck on a purple screen, without grub.
Can I with a live cd revert the drivers back to normal?
i installed ubuntu along side of xp, and i cannot get my wireless to work. the drivers that are installed in xp work great, and i can access the internet, but do not work in ubuntu.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have searched all over the internet for a solution to my problem but I have never found one and it is really frustrating me. Basically when I installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my laptop everything works fine other than extra desktop effects because obviously graphics drivers or not installed yet. All of this is fine and the boot up screen is at my native resolution 1366x768 or something very close and it looks really nice.
The main problem I have is that as soon as I install my graphics driver for nVidia G105m card for some strange reason the boot up screen becomes a very strange resolution and appears to become very glitchy and it is really bugging me. Instead of the boot screen having a nice purple background and the loading bar and word Ubuntu looking nice and smooth it because large pixelated and every time I boot a big green square flashes during the boot up screen.
This problem goes away as soon as I remove drivers but then obviously I lose desktop effects and then that is just as annoying. Now my question is, is there anyway way I can either fix my low boot up screen resolution or is there another way in which i can enable desktop effects without installing my drivers?
its pretty much my first install. I am duel booting with Vista. I followed the guidelines and made a partition for my Ubuntu install. Everything installed correctly, however, it tell you to activate drivers for my video card, then restart. After restart ubuntu will not boot, it just sits at the startup screen and does nothing, I waited like an hour just to make sure that it was not just installing more things. I have re-formatted my partition and am going to reinstall later. Oh, I installed 10.4.1.

Without installing any nvidia drivers my boot screen resolution and desktop resolution were fine. But I cudn't activate Extra Visual effects and so I installed nvidia drivers. Now the problem is that Extra visual effects work just fine. But during the boot, the splash screen has a very poor resolution.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have an encrypted file system and recently installed proprietary ATI drivers for my graphics card. The moment I did that, Ubuntu boots with a black screen. Now I'm attempting to get back into the OS to remove the drivers, but when I choose Ubuntu Recovery Mode from the grub boot screen, it shows some dmesg output and then the screen goes black. Whats interesting is it doesn't even ask me to decrypt the hard drive (like it normally does). how I can get back into the OS to remove the drivers?
View 4 Replies View RelatedJust install xubuntu today and I saw the beautiful "xubuntu" loading screen image when the computer boots up. I also see this screen when the laptop shuts down. However after installing the proprietary Catalyst drivers for my laptop, that boot image was replaced with just a plain text "XUBUNTU 11.04" and a few lines of text. It looks ugly everytime I boot the laptop.

View 4 Replies View RelatedSince I've been using the nvidia drivers (from rpmfusion) and followed Leigh123's nvidia guide, I don't have a Plymouth graphical boot anymore. Instead I get the black screen and the blue/white bar at the bottom. I installed the plymouth-theme-solar (or whatever) and switched to that, updated initrd too, but no difference - same thing happened. This is an AMD64 system, latest kernel, latest nvidia drivers. After having a lot of trouble with vista and no chance of getting Windows 7 anytime soon, I decided to get Ubuntu and use dual booting with vista. I had recently installed it about two days ago and for the most part it worked pretty well. That is until I installed the driver for my video card, an ATI Radeon HD2600 pro, then things went down hill for me. Every time I try and boot Ubuntu it now goes to a black screen after the logo comes up and i am unable to do anything. I have tried to look up some solutions, but I am still relatively new to programing and some of this stuff seems a bit complicated for me. Is there a simple solution to this that does not require a reinstall?

My question is, how can I install packages on kubuntu without a wired internet connection, and what packages should I download to be able to install the driver on kubuntu without getting errors?

I am dual-booting Kubuntu/Windows 7 x64bit.
I have a HP g6t, previously fully running 11.04. I wanted to root my HTC evo 4g so I decided I *needed* to install windows 7. I created a 20GB partition with gParted, then downloaded and burned .iso of windows 7 my laptop came packaged with (windows 7 home premium 64-bit). However, after installing, Windows now refuses to recognize ANY of my network drivers. This means my ethernet connection (was plugged in during set-up) as well as my wireless card.

I'm new to these forums. I'm coming from using Ubuntu for a couple of years and now I'm trying to switch to Fedora.
I installed F10 yesterday and all went well, more or less. The system used to freeze randomly but after updating, everything seemed to work fine (I haven't tried audio yet, though).
I have an X1250 integrated graphics system that's working fine in Ubuntu. After playing around with F10 for a while I decided to download and install the latest ATI drivers from AMD's site. The installation posed no problems, but when I reboot the system it will come to a black screen at some point and freeze there.
I searched the web a little and came to this: http://www.fedorafaq.org/#radeon, but I'm not sure if that's current or old news. If it's current and those ATI drivers can't be installed, I'd appreciate some help about removing them.

I've installed fglrx drivers with 1click install on openSuse11.3. If I try to boot in "normal mode" I end up in black screen. However if I boot in safe mode, then login and startx, everything works ok

Basically everything was going fine, and i was enjoying the OpenSuse experience, then downloaded djl (Games Launcher) , installed some games and found that i had a very very very bad frame rate (about 1FPS), and my GPU is a NVIDIA GTS250 (1GB), and runs most games flawlessly under m$, so i went about installing the graphics drivers for my card. I followed the instructions and was under the assumption that i installed the correct ones, but now i cannot boot into any graphical interface. I think that it should be a graphics issue, as this was one of the few things done before rebooting. I have tried booting into the normal mode, and the failsafe, I have read many other "Not booting'' posts, and have tried their solutions without success, there include: Changing the boot parameters Logging in and manually trying to boot up the gui (init 3.... init 5... etc)
When the computer tries to load up OpenSuse in normal mode, it comes up with the normal loading screen, and then about 90% of the way it stops for about 30 seconds, and then switches over to a CLI, asking for a login, going through the log a couple of things fail, did have these noted down (but cannot find and will post along with other commands that i am asked to do) I want to try and avoid a reinstall as it took me a long time to get the WiFi card working.
I've recently jump from the Ubuntu/Mint ship, and figured I've give a polished KDE distribution a shot. Of course I turned to OpenSuSE, and I love it so far. I've resisted KDE quite a lot since 4.x came out but it's really come along. Much better than the (in my opinion) monstrous disaster that Gnome has become.
Anyways, on to my problem: I've installed the proprietary Nvidia drivers via the one-click-install shown in the wiki, and that worked great. But now my resolution at boot - that is the boot/loading screen, not my desktop - is shown at a very low resolution instead of my native resolution, like it was with OpenSuSE's default open-source Nvidia driver, which I'm guessing is Nouveau. On Ubuntu, this was pretty easy to correct; all you had to do was edit /etc/default/grub and put your resolution there, and tinker with some other options so that instead of Plymouth trying to set its own, it just carries over Grub's specified resolution. But I can't seem to do that with OpenSuSE. For one, I don't see /etc/default/grub, and more than that, I don't think you guys use Plymouth. I could be wrong on that second point, though. So, how can I change the boot screen's resolution to my native resolution? I'm using the latest Stable release (11.4) and latest Nvidia drivers. Other than that, the install is new.
I recently installed Fedora - it seems like a nice interface and I want to experience the system before deciding whether I want to keep using it over my ever reliable Crunchbang, which gives me absolutely no grief whatsoever. However, it is nice to use an attractive interface now and again.So, here's my problem - I opted to install the ATI drivers when alerted to the restricted ones by the pop-up. I took note of how to disable them again if there were problems with the display after reboot. There was a problem with the display (black screen) and I can't get the command entered at boot time because the only command line environment I have an option for is GRUB. Grib does not recognize any of the 'aticonfig --initial -f' command that ATI instructed me to use to get things back to normal. How do I do this? I prsume others have been there and will know how to guide me. - getting the graphical interface to display better graphics. I want the eye candy that desktop effects give. I am hoping Fedora won't let me down here because I could simply continue to use Ubuntu which only gives one problem with the window resize delay.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have been using ubuntu for quite a long time, and for the first time, I am now unable to set nvidia drivers to work. I have just install ubuntu 9.10 amd64 on an AMD 64 athlong X2 with a GEForce 6500 nvidia card.
The only reason I need the proprietary drivers is to use two monitors.
I am going crazy, I have tested everything I have found on the web. I have tried all the nvidia drivers version, I have tried envyng, ... but nvidia do not work!!
I am trying Xinerama with nv, but it does not work either!!!
Here is my xorg.conf file in which I have tried to use nv driver to set dual monitor. X fails to load and it says that screen 0 is deleted, that devices are found but there are no matches in the config file. Any clue?
