Greetings ubuntu members. I have recently been trying to install ubuntu 11.04 on my old computer and I installed ubuntu with no problems but everytime it takes me to grub, the monitor will turn black in 2-3 mins with a message saying Not Optimum mode 12080 x 1024. I suspect that this maybe a video card problem? I have a Radeon 9250 video card.

Recommended mode 1280 x 1024 60Hz" In my case, this is happening after installing Debian 504 AMD64, the Samsung "SyncMaster 940N" that gives this message or warning was working fine for a few years on another machine under the previous Lenny distro.
The only way to get rid of this unwanted pop-up window (the monitor is working fine) is to press the "AUTO" switch on the monitor, there is no such option in the menu of the monitor to disable anything or change the resolution and it seems to me that, unlike what was suggested as an answer in similar threads, the problem is not with the monitor but with the distro unable to detect the monitor properly. The only mention in the "xorg.conf" file is as follows and running "dpkg reconfigure ..." has no other effect than creating a new exact duplicate of the file.

This is a general technical question about Symmetric Multiprocessing in relation to the Intel Core i7. (Actually, it's more about Hyperthreading than i7.) My understanding is that Symmetric Multiprocessing means that the operating system treats all processors as identical, and therefore it can assign a new thread to any free processor.
And that i7 appears to the OS as 8 processors, 0 thru 7. But from a performance perspective, the 8 processors are not identical, because each core has 1 execution engine plus the ability to store the state of 2 threads. This is, as far as I understand it, the essence of Intel's Hyperthreading. So each execution engine can quickly switch between 2 threads without bothering the OS, but only one thread at a time actually executes.
Suppose, for example, all processors are idle and the OS assigns one thread to processor 0, then has a second thread to assign. Since all free processors are considered identical, the OS could assign the second thread to any free processor, say 1. The result would be that both threads are competing for the same execution engine, while the other 3 cores remain idle. Is my understanding of SMP correct?
If so, does linux SMP take full advantage of Intel Hyperthreading (which existed also in earlier Intel processors)? That is, does linux SMP assign threads in such a way that it attempts to choose an idle execution engine? I don't know what algorithm SMP actually uses to choose the processor. For example, it could be the first free processor, or any free processor chosen at random.How about Windows? How does it handle the situation?

I just did a clean install from Ubuntu 8.04 LTS to Ubuntu 9.10. I went to System -> Administration -> Hardware Drivers to enable any drivers (mainly for my graphics card so I could run higher resolutions). Had two driver, one for my wireless network interface card and one for my graphics card (NVIDIA Geforce FX 5200). I enabled the drivers restarted and went to System -> Administration -> NVIDIA X Server Settings. The resolution was set to "Auto", which is 1280 x 1024 (max.) on my old CRT.
I've ran that resolution for a day now and it isn't as snappy as I'd like it to be (or as the exact same resolution was on 8.04). So I reverted back to 1024 x 768. Everything seems to be running as I'd hope under the lower resolution. The only problem I am running into now is when I restart NVIDIA X Server Settings changes back to "Auto" and automatically switches to 1280 x 1024. I've clicked "Save X Configuration File" thinking that might help retain the resolution I want after startup, but it just says "Failed to parse existing X config file '/etc/x11/xorg.confg'!"
How do I get my resolution to stay at 1024 x 768 after a restart?

Just recently wiped off Windows and installed Ubuntu fully. - (Funny thing is, I didn't mean to. I deleted the partition by accident). Anyway, before I could get a bigger resolution on Windows with this screen? Only reason I'm using it is because my laptop screen is broke with a 'ink spill' screen. Could it be drivers need installing? If so, where could I download them from?

When I open the card (using a card reader) in Nautilus (Ubuntu 10.04) it will only list about 1024 files and not the rest. It does not provide any warnings so one could easily think all files have been copied when in fact they haven't. This could be a real issue if the user does not notice. Using another app called rapid photo downloader in Ubuntu does not seem to list/preview all the files either. I dual boot to win xp 32 bit and I can see all the photos and can copy them to the harddrive without any issues so I don't think it is hardware related. How to get Nautilus to allow the copy of all files?

I'm running nginx for static files and as a proxy server for a comet IM server on ubuntu Jaunty. On high load I'm hitting a limit of 1024 file descriptors. I've tried increasing this limit but still can't pass 1024. Does "more /proc/sys/fs/file-nr" gives me the global count of used file descriptors? Why do I see a maximum of 1024 open file descriptors in /proc/sys/fs/file-nr if this is the global count for the machine and each user should have at least 1024 allowed file descriptors by default? Is there a way to increase the limit while the server is running?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI upgraded to 11.04 about 10 days ago. I have this intermittently weird problem where some of the applications, some of the time, are oversized for the 1024 x 600 display. I can't get to the buttons on the bottom end of the screen, and the window refuses to decrease in size enough so that it all fits on. So far, I've had this problem with Evolution, Pytrainer, Gimp, and another one that escapes my memory.
Has anyone else had this issue? (Except for the Evolution bug, which has been around since 2005 or thereabouts. How on earth is that thing still the default when nobody bothers to fix it up?) how to a workaround? Heck, I don't even know where to go to report this kind of bug.
Just wondering, I am using Fedora 14 live from a 4gb usb with 1024 persistence file. With this file will I be able to do updates in yum or packagekit.
View 4 Replies View RelatedOpenSUSE 11.4 (x86) + KDE 4.6.0 starts up by default in the 1280x1024 screen resolution. Although this is very annoying it can be overcome. But when I change to 1024x768 resolution the Taskbar doesn't adapt to this and the icons bottom right in the system tray can not be seen anymore (they disappear beyond the right side of the monitor so to say).
I have installed the nvidia-gfx-kmp-default graphics driver for my old GeForce card. This problem also occurs with the default, but rubbish, Nouveau driver. In OpenSUSE 11.3 there was no problem at all with the same configuration.
I have a mixed set of images, each one having a slightly different resolution with a slightly different aspect ratio from the other images.I have tried using commands like:convert -resizeand:convert -cropHowever I can't seem to figure out the correct command to make all images have a width of 1024 and an aspect ratio of 6x4, without causing the image to stretch or get squashed.

Which means that thing that is prevented to do in the normal standard Linux will be also prevented in the SELinux System? View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm running Fedora 11 (2.6.30.10-105.2.4.fc11.i686.PAE) 8 GB memory on a AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 965 Processor, 4 core server I just built.The problem I have run into is any virtual machine that has >1024 MB memory assigned to it will not boot. As along as it has 1024 MB or less it boots fine.The symptom you see is a very quick message "Booting from hard disk" the screen then goes blank, you can't login through SSH, and can't ping the network address so I know it's not some crazy video problem hiding the boot process.The attachment are messages from a failed boot attempt.

When I try to lunch a program that listens to a lower port such as 80 or any one that is less than 1024, I always get "Permission denied" error message (I am running it as root!).Then I try starting httpd service daemon that listens to 80, no errors, the daemon started and listend to 80.PS: I checked selinux, it has been disabled.Do you have any knowledge on this case? Does anyone know what boot parameters to use or how to get Fedora to start the install process in a resolution other than the "Optimum resolution"? resolution=640x40 vga=ask. These do not work. They set the debug display but when the graphical portion starts it defaults to the "optimum resolution" and the message displays "Cannot Display This Video Mode". As you consider the answer, think this is a new computer, blank hard disk, etc. I am installing Fedora 10. Tried 11 and Vista seems less buggy, prefer 10 or 9.
