I just upgraded to an ASUS P8P67 Pro (Sandy Bridge) motherboard and moved my old hard drive to the new case. Windows 7 and XP are running smoothly. Ubuntu, however, doesn't detect the Ethernet adapter or doesn't have a suitable driver. ASUS doesn't offer Linux drivers for this motherboard. Is there a way to make Ubuntu revert to a default, working driver?
View 2 Repliesi just got a new motherboard for a router/server at home i got something beefier, the deal is that the raid 0 i've got running on the old chipset is running ubuntu desktop edition and i just wanna install the server edition on the new beefier board, i've a /home partition in the raid if i swap the boards will that crap out what i've got in my /home dir... or can i just swap the boards and make a fresh install on a root partition without messing up my /home partition?

I have a newly installed CentOS 5.4 on Gigabyte G31M-ES2C, I had to change the motherboard since it has some problems. Unfortunately the new motherboard is a rev 2.x board, which has a different onboard NIC (old one is RTL 8102E, new one is AR8132), so now my ethernet connection doesn't work anymore (no eth0 device), I assume I need to install a new driver for the AR8132? I have done so by plugging in a Realtec lan card - but can't get the motherboard lan working. Googling tells me the motherboard has a Atheros L1E lan chip - but I have installed several kmod drivers from ELREPO - but still can't get the on-board lan working. So far I have installed:

I have just installed these with yum - but no new hardware appears in the network gui dialogue. Am I missing some step here - or is there another driver I should be looking for.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI am using Ubuntu Incredible Ibex on a Lenovo T400 with a Hawking HWUG1 USB adapter. I was successfully capturing WPA handshakes good enough for Aircrack-ng. However they didnt satisfy Cowpatty.
The built-in wireless adapter on my Lenovo T400 appeared as wlan0. The HWUG1 USB adapter appeared as wlan1. The airmon-ng start wlan1 command configured the HWUG USB adapter as mon0. Things were okay but not great. I wanted to use Cowpatty and the Rainbow tables but my captures werent satisfactory, except for the ones on my own router five feet away. I even tried using a 3 foot omni 12 dB antenna
I started to suspect my drivers.I was using the drivers that came with Ubuntu Incredible Ibex. I saw the website [URl].. and followed the instructions carefully to install the rt73-k2wrlz-3.0.3 driver. When I ran Airmon-ng start wlan1, I saw that the Hawking was indeed now rausb0 and using the rt73 driver.
When I ran Aireplay on my WIFI router to de authenticate myself I got 0/0 acks. Previously I was getting something like (63/66 acks).It also happened on other test routers. So I did some more reading and I was thinking the rt73-k2wrlz-3.0.3.driver was incompatible with the Incredible Ibex kernel and Ubuntu. I found the site [URL].. and followed the instructions to install the rt73-cvs-daily driver. However I didnt install WICD.
After that, my HWUG1 USB disappeared completely as well as wlan1. It doesnt show up when I run the ifconfig command. However my built-in onboard wireless adapter shows up as wlan0. How can I bring back the wlan1 and my Hawking HWUG1 USB adapter? Furthermore how can I reinstate the original driver that I was using?
If I take out the existing video card and put in another one of a different type (but not a different brand), how does Ubuntu behave? I know what Windows typically does. Windows starts up the screen using a default video driver which is at least 1024 by 768 and then asks you what this new bit of hardware is and asks where the drivers are. I'm pretty sure Ubuntu has default drivers of its own, but I don't know what their resolution is.

View 5 Replies View RelatedRAM for older machines like I use is fairly cheap these days. But flash memory is just as cheap or cheaper. So I'd like to ask about the feasibility of expanding my system's memory using flash memory. And about whether creating a partition for swap on the flash memory, or whether a swap file on the flash device, is the better way to go.
By flash memory I have in mind mainly USB sticks or what are sometimes called "pen drives." But I do also have CF and SD cards that, with the proper cheap adapter (one of which I already own for adapting CF) could be used to create extra swap space. So, what is the current consensus on the feasibility/advisability of using flash memory for swap? I've read about the limited write cycles of flash being an argument against using it for swap. But recent reading indicates to me that the limited write cycles problem applies mostly to older, smaller-capacity flash memory. Some will come out and say that, for larger-capacity flash memory, the life of the device is likely to exceed the amount of time your current computer will be useful (I think I've seen estimates in the range of 3-4 years life--minimum--for newer, higher-capacity flash memory).
A more persuasive argument I've heard against using flash memory for swap is that access times for these devices can be much slower than SATA, and maybe even IDE, hard drives. That would certainly dictate against using flash memory for swap.
So, how about some input on this issue? Anyone using flash memory for swap? If so, what kind (e.g., usb stick or SD/CF)? Are you using a swap file or a swap partition? How's system performance? Likewise, has anyone had flash-memory-used-as-swap die on them? The consequences would undoubtedly be dire. Also, has anyone measured flash memory access times to confirm or refute claims about slow access times? Are some types of flash memory better/worse than others in terms of access times?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI used my old RAM in my new PC. The RAM was rated for 533mhz but the motherboard could not run it below 667mhz. Today I was using tdfsb (3D file system browser) in my music folder (which has a lot of files/folders) the PC froze. After 20min I pulled the plug and it started back up properly. After some updates later that day, I tried to reboot. All it did was shut down and light up the fanlights instead of restarting. I tried resetting the battery. With the old motherboard, bad RAM would cause beeps and I hear no beeps. The board is a Gigabyte GA-MA785GM-US2H. The CPU an Athlon II x2 255. RAM failure would cause beeps or not.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm running a dual-boot with Win7 64-bit and ubuntu 9.10 64-bit. I installed Win7 quite a while ago and ubuntu was installed this last weekend. It's been running happily and until now I have been very impressed, in fact I've only booted win7 once after installing ubuntu and that was just to make sure it was still working after resizing the partition.
I'm now running ubuntu from my installation cd in "run ubuntu without making any changes". Because when I turn-on my computer it simply will not go past the "motherboard-screen", if you know what I mean. It's a HP so I had some kind of "pc doctor" or something in the motherboard-screen. I was able to run that and it passed everything; cpu, ram, HD... So it seem like the hard drive is fine. Any thing that can make my computer working or allow me to back-up my files.
I have an EMachine T3095 with xp home os and ubuntu os. I install ubuntu in windows. In windows I don't load internet software, yet surfing the web fine in both os. Recently did complete re-installation of windows and ubuntu os, for got 3 trojan viruses on windows. Now can't get on the internet in windows. Emachine said I need to get motherboard downloaded to get LAN, which is not on windows software. Isn't the same motherboard used by ubuntu to get on the internet? Obviously some software has been corrupted? Which software could be the problem. Is there a link to download it?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI upgaded my system last weekend with a Gigabyte GZ-X58A-UD5 motherboard, i7 processor, ASUS EAH5770 video card, and 12 GB RAM. Sound has been erratic since then. It generally works for a short time after a reboot, but after awhile (within a few hours) it stops working properly or even completely. I've tried several different settings in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf, but nothing I've tried helps.
I am running Kubuntu 9.10 64-bit.

My understanding is that Ubuntu is suppose to detect the eSATA drive without any extra drivers, my experience is it does not - I am missing something or is anyone else having/had this problem and been able to get eSATA to work?

1)sub 100 SSD vs 7200 16mb 3.5'' platter drive ? I can't seem to find much information here. As far as I can tell, the standard hard drive would be faster unless I'm prepared to spend a couple of hundred on a top of the range SSD - is this correct?
2) will a sata/ide converter slow the transfer rates? is it worth spending the extra 50% to get an ide drive with the same specs as a SATA drive, or just use the converter?
3) Thoughts on connecting the drive via firewire - how much slower would this be than connecting the drive via the ide port on the motherboard? I am only concidering this as I don't use the firewire ports for anything else, and getting to the hard drive is a total pain, not to mention the inherrant risk of electric shock on these machines.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI am using Ubuntu 11.04 on an Intel D510MO motherboard as a low-end surfing computer. The monitor, a Viewsonic VA1926w, has a maximum resolution of 1440x900. However, the monitor preferences shows a maximum of 1024x768 only. How can I bring up the resolution to 1440x900? The screen seems sort of flattened because of the incorrect settings. I think the video card (built in) of the motherboard is an Intel 3150.

Last time I tried (right as 11 came out) I had horrible graphic errors during the install, problems install grub2-efi, and then even when I got everything installed I had graphic errors on boot up that rendered the install worthless. I think I am going to have to go to a different linux distro, which I am not really that happy about, but I need linux on this computer. know experiences with ANY linux distro and recent EFI motherboard installs.
