Ubuntu / Apple :: Connecting The Drive Via The Ide Port On The Motherboard?

May 28, 2011

- I've recently been donated a second emac by a friend that needs a new hdd. I want to add as much speed as possible, but don't know much about hdd transfer speeds

1)sub 100 SSD vs 7200 16mb 3.5'' platter drive ? I can't seem to find much information here. As far as I can tell, the standard hard drive would be faster unless I'm prepared to spend a couple of hundred on a top of the range SSD - is this correct?

2) will a sata/ide converter slow the transfer rates? is it worth spending the extra 50% to get an ide drive with the same specs as a SATA drive, or just use the converter?

3) Thoughts on connecting the drive via firewire - how much slower would this be than connecting the drive via the ide port on the motherboard? I am only concidering this as I don't use the firewire ports for anything else, and getting to the hard drive is a total pain, not to mention the inherrant risk of electric shock on these machines.

Hardware :: Test Integrity Of External Hard Drive / Without Removing It And Connecting With SATA To Motherboard?

Jul 28, 2009

I have a seagate SATA hard drive that was running a mythtv distro. It had 3 partitions, EXT3, swap, and XFS. I started having I/O errors on boot and saw error messages on both the EXT3 and the XFS partitions. I also heard some clunking sounds on the drive when it was reading, so I thought hell, the drive is dead.

I have since replaced the drive and everything is back up and running on the replacement drive. I thought hell, the seagate drive is toast, but I just want to verify it with some sort of tool. I have the hard drive in a Vantec NexStar external hard drive case (SATA->USB) and found there was a tool called badblocks. Ran badblocks on it, which ran for 24ish hours and found no bad blocks. I also didn't notice any clunking sounds while it was running.

I ran
Code:
badblocks -n -v /dev/sdb
Is badblocks a proper test to run on external hard drives or was I just wasting my time? Is there any way that I can really test it without removing it and connecting it with SATA to the motherboard?

Software :: Use A Hard Drive On Another Motherboard??

Jan 17, 2011

I bought a new motherboard and put this hard drive and 2 others on it. This hard drive has Kubuntu 8.04, one other has windows 7, and the 3rd one has Mandriva 2010. I re installed Mandriva 2010 so it would recognize the other 2 hard drives (10 hours later). And even though GRUB sees all 3 hard drive I cannot boot to Kubuntu 8.04. I had to put Mandriva on the one because it has a complete GRUB bootloader whereas Kubuntu does Not So is there a way to get this hard drive to work on my new motherboard?

I had to put together another tower with the old mobo to get to where I am now.

Ubuntu / Apple :: Magic Trackpad Not Auto Connecting?

May 23, 2011

I have an HP 6735s laptop that I have connected an Apple Wireless Keyboard and Apple Magic Trackpad to via bluetooth on 11.04.

When I login the keyboard automatically connects via bluetooth (once the gnome-bluetooth applet boots), however, I need to manually go into the applet and click connect for the trackpad. I can then run a script to start touchegg.

How I do set up the trackpad to auto-connect? I am guessing the built-in trackpad on the laptop is overriding it?

Debian :: Connecting To SSH With Specific Source Port

May 14, 2015

I'm looking forward to know how to connect to a remote server through SSH but from a specific port, so I con drop connections from random ports that's not the one I choose. Is this possible?

I have tried by setting up an iptables entry to forward output through both, PREROUTING and OUTPUT (one at each time, flushing when I can see that it's not working), in NAT table, so I can connect doing ssh localhost

Code: Select alliptables -t nat -I OUTPUT -p tcp -s 127.0.0.1 -d 127.0.0.1 --dport 4141 -j DNAT --to 192.168.1.2:4040

Unfortunately, it is not forwarding as I'd like.

I want to do this because I think that doing this will enhace the security, dropping connections of clients that are trying to connect from not allowed ports. I have already set up fail2ban and created SSH keys, not allowing to login with password, only key allowed. Will only allowing connections from a specific port will enhance the security or not really?

Software :: Sendmail - Telnet Not Connecting On Port 25?

Jan 11, 2011

I have been trying all day today to setup a sendmail SMTP server on our Red Hat 5.5 dev box. We have 2 network cards, 1 to the local network with a 192.168 prefix and an external card which goes out to the web through a BT leased line through a Cisco router.

First I followed one of the many helpful tutorials online to setup sendmail, installed all the required packages and made a couple of small config changes to allow the service to listen on all IP addresses rather than just the localhost 127.0.0.1.

The main change is in the /etc/mail/sendmail.mc file where I have changed the following line;

DAEMON_OPTIONS(`Port=smtp,Addr=x.x.x.x, Name=MTA')dnl

I have tried removing Addr completely, setting to either the local or external IP and then rebuilding the sendmail file using 'make -C /etc/mail' and then restarting using 'service sendmail restart'

The SMTP port has been added into the firewall and it is showing to be listening on IP 0.0.0.0:25 which I believe means it is listening on all IP's assigned to the machine, sendmail is also in listen mode and running correctly.

Finally I have changed the /etc/mail/access file to include the local IP range 192.168 and external IP range and rebuilt this into the /etc/mail/access.db file and then restarted sendmail.

Googling the error all the sites I have found talk about making sure the 'DAEMON_OPTIONS(`Port=smtp,Addr=x.x.x.x, Name=MTA')dnl' line is uncommented and not much else in terms of what else might be incorrect.

I am starting to run out of ideas on things to change or check, telnet works correctly on other ports on the same server, ie httpd for apache on port 80. I have also rebooted the server to make sure that it wasn't something odd happening.

Ubuntu Installation :: Connecting The Second Sata Drive - No Boot

Oct 7, 2010

I've been trying to find a solution, I've looked everywhere but no luck. I have a 1TB drive, checked the cable & it's connected to motherboard SATA0. That motherboard is dual booting fine (windows7 + Ubuntu 10.04).

My problem is when I connect the other SATA drive, SATA1. Upon restarting my machine, nothing happens & I dont see any boot menu (grub).

I've checked the bios settings, boot drives are in order:

CD-ROM
SATA0
SATA1

To check if the second drive has physical errors, I've connected it as SATA0 (alone) & installed successfully windows & ubuntu 10.04. I formatted it & installed ubuntu studio. The drive is working fine. So I formatted it again, & now it's not connected.

How can I make it work? I want SATA0 to have both windws/ubuntu, & the SATA1 to be just a data storage drive.

Ubuntu Networking :: Connecting To NAS - Cannot See My Synology NAS Drive On My Network

Jun 20, 2011

Having become so frustrated With the many bugs in 11.04 I have stepped backward and instead installed Ubuntu 10.10 onto my Dell laptop. Until now I have been very pleased, as nearly everything has worked well, straight out of the box. So, just as I thought I was home and dry I have noticed that I cannot see my Synology NAS drive on my network. This is doubly frustrating because my other PC, also running 10.10, has suddenly lost it's ability to see the NAS drive too. Throughout last week I used the NAS in conjunction with my Ubuntu PC without a hitch but now it's gone. The NAS is visible to both Windows and Macs it's just the Ubuntu machines that cannot use it. It is also vaguely annoying knowing that the NAS itself uses a Linux OS or maybe that could be a clue to what's wrong.

As things stand my Apple Macs can see each other, they see the Windows box, see the NAS and see the shared folders on the Ubuntu machines. The Windows machines see the Macs, each other, the NAS and the Linux shared folders. The Ubuntu machines only see the Apple Mac shares, no Windows and no other Ubuntu shared folder nor the NAS.

It is curious because the little program Avahi Zero Conf Browser can see absolutely everything on my network yet the Ubuntu GUI is proving to be the most difficult thing to network using anything other than than a web browser. Is there a concise definitive reason why Linux (Ubuntu) is so infernally difficult to network? I am not very experienced with Linux or the terminal but was hoping that this system might by now have become a little more user friendly for ordinary people.

Could there also have been something in a recent OS update that has killed off my PC running Ubuntu's ability to see the NAS where previously there has been no problem.

Ubuntu / Apple :: Install On Macbook Pro Without DVD Drive?

I have a Macbook Pro with a b0rked DVD drive, and want to install Ubuntu on it.

I have followed the instructions here: [URL]

But when rebooting and holding ALT, I don't get the option of booting from USB.

Possibly related, when I view the USB drive in Disk Utility it's marked as "Bootable: no" :

I've tried this with two different USB sticks.

I've also burned a Ubuntu install disk from the original ISO, loaded it into another mac and started that mac in Target Disk Mode. Then I connected them with Firewire, rebooted the mac *without* the disc drive, held ALT and chose the shared disc as the boot device. Though weirdly it was named "Windows". Sadly, I then got a message on a black background saying it was not a bootable device.

Ubuntu / Apple :: Use Bootcamp Drive - Can't Mount

Ubuntu / Apple :: Drive Will Not Read On TMac After Booting

Mar 21, 2010

Drive will not read on the Mac after booting in Ubuntu!I haven't booted Ubuntu in months (October?), but no hardware changes except for the expresscard. Ubuntu runs nicely in a virtual machine from the Mac side, so I made a fresh VM with Karmic. Couldn't remember the cool apps I had running before (it's been a while), so I booted into Ubuntu to check it out. The HDD was connected and on. (Oops.)It was fine last night on the Mac. I did not notice if it mounted this morning (still in OSX, 10.6.2, Mac sleeping overnight and HDDs on for an unrelated backup). So there is a very slim possibility this has nothing to do with Ubuntu.

Back to Ubuntu, the other external (Firewire 800, HFS+) mounted as usual. Again, I cannot recall if the Fantom mounted. I have not installed drivers for the expresscard/eSATA in Ubuntu (separate driver install is required on the Mac a rarity). I scribbled down the names of the apps I was looking for, and rebooted the Mac to OSX. Where's my HD? Disk Utility sees it as unformatted, and oddly enough, SCSI. If I plug it in via USB, it simply sees an unformatted disk. eSATA is OK with another drive on the Mac.DiskWarrior failed to see the disk entirely with either connection, same in Leopard and even Tiger.Could Ubuntu have confused the partition maps or something? Any thoughts on how I might get it running before I give up and restore the backup?
