Ubuntu :: No Audio - Watching Videos ?
Jul 27, 2011
I was watching videos with audio literally minutes ago, and all of the sudden my laptop has absolutely no sound. I have no idea what could have caused it. I just ran a quick update and restarted, didn't fix it. I also went under Preferences > Sound > Hardware and did a speaker test, no sound. What could have possibly happened? Is this a common issue? Is my integrated audio burnt out or something? (No, I don't have mute on.)

"screen tearing" whenever I scroll, watch flash videos, or any videos in general. I first noticed this in Fedora 14, and now I notice the same behaviour in Linux Mint.Does anyone know what might be causing this? My Graphics Card is: Nvidia Geforce GTX 280M (1GB) I'm using Nvidia proprietary drivers. Reading some forums I see that the problem might be related to Compiz. Here's my xorg.conf file (if needed);
Code:
Section "Screen"
Identifier"Default Screen"
DefaultDepth24
[code]....

Here is my problem. Just installed Ubuntu 10.04 with Rivendell radio automation software built in (RRAbuntu). I installed it on an older machine, an HP XT919 (I know it's a bit older, but everything runs fine EXCEPT)...No audio. Audio was fine when I ran the live CD. I first installed Ubuntu 9.04 and had audio, but it kept locking up. I then installed 10.04 with Rivendell. No audio on CD's, no audio on Videos, nothing. I already ran terminal and raised all the levels in alsamixer. What else may be the problem?

Majority of the videos I play with VLC the audo is out of sync, I have to delay it about 400ms to sync it. This only started happening after I upgraded to 10.04 64bit ( from 32bit ). Could it be a bug in the version of VLC I'm using (1.1.10)?

I'm able to get HDMI audio/video perfectly when I'm playing a dvd on mythbuntu. However, If I try to play the ripped version or any other video that is on the hard drive, I get no Audio?
I've checked alsamixer to make sure the device isn't muted.
If I use vlc media player I don't have any audio either. Is there a way to enable hdmi audio as default?

I am having a little problem with my flash player, the video plays fine but I can't get any sound. The sound card works properly with any other application, such as Amarok, but not with flash videos and my hardware is mostly Intel witch is linux-friendly from what I know, so I guess that it isn't a driver problem. Therefore, I switched from windows to linux only a couple days ago, so it may be a newbie issue as well.
I'm using Kubuntu 10.04 64-bit with HDA Intel audio chip set with flash player 10.0.45.2. If anyone have a solution/explanation,

I used this code ffmpeg -i video.flv -r 12.5 -s 320x240 -vcodec mpeg -ar 22050 -ab 128k -acodec ac3 out.mp4 for converting a flv to mp4. The output is all right, but in the ipod nano 3g 4GB it has no sound. What's wrong? Maybe I put the wrong -acodec ac3 options?
Code:
-acodec libfaac
Code:
-acodec aac
gives me
Code:
Unknown encoder 'libfaac'

i've been experiencing an issue with audio playback for certain flash videos that stream from the web. most play smoothly, like the videos at videos. others have this strange background noise that is only present when there is audio (usually on news websites that host their own videos). when there is sound, there is a strange stuttering noise that disappears during the silent pauses.
here's a perfect example: [url]
the videos video at the top plays just fine. if you scroll down and watch the other video in the small box, you'll hear the stuttering. i have fedora 14 kde, adobe flash player 64 bit preview release 3 and rpm fusion codecs installed. the problem is also present in fedora 14 with gnome, same setup. the problematic videos play without the stuttering in ubuntu.

I've been playing around with the latest RC of 11.4. Overall, it works great, but just have 1 issue. No flash videos have audio. Video works just fine. I've tried installing both the flash-player package so that it loads the official 32-bit plugin through ndiswrapper, and tried downloading the Adobe Square 64-bit plugin and installing it. Doesn't make a difference, either way I have working video but not audio. Audio itself on the laptop works with no issues, I listen to Amarok all the time on it. Laptop in question is a Dell Latitude E5500. I've also had Debian Wheezy and Kubuntu 10.10 on here, both had no issues.

here's some background info: purchased a brand new netbook last week (samsung n130) and thought i'd set up a dual-boot to accompany the pre-installed windows xp sp3, and after a bit of research i decided upon installing ubuntu as my preferred linux os, which i believe at the time was and still is version 10.10.
but the problem is: when i attempt to watch flash videos (from videos for example) the video streams fine, but the audio is very jumpy and skips back and forth every few seconds. occasionally there are periods of say 10-15 seconds where the audio is ok. the problem exists on both firefox and chrome, and is exclusive to ubuntu. keep in mind that i'm an absolute novice when it comes to linux/ubuntu, etc.

I recently bought a Samsung LED TV C5000 40", and I'm trying to watch an .mkv file from my pendrive, but it says, "Not Supported Video Codec".
I saw in the TV's user guide and it says it supports .mkv.
I don't know how to get the info about the mkv, but using "themonospot" I got:
- SubtitleTrack01 [eng]S_TEXT/UTF8
- VideoTrack01 V_MPEG4/ISO/AVC (1920x816)
- AudioTrack01 [eng]A_AC3- 48000 Hz - 6 channels

I have a PVR-150 for recording TV shows.
I can record shows using this command:
Code:
cat /dev/video0 > /mnt/raid/show.mpg
I can watch the show.mpg file while its recoding using VLC, Xine, Mplayer... pretty much any video player.
This is nice because i can pause, rewind, and fast-forward live TV, just like all the commercial DVRs out there.
The problem with this method is returning to "Live TV" mode. When using a commercial DVR, when you are fast-forwarding and reach "Live TV", the player stops fast-forwarding and begins playing the live TV in real-time. When doing the same thing with Xine or VLC, the player simply stops when you reach the EOF.
Is there a player that mimics this? When it get close to the EOF, it switches from Fast-Forward to play?
I used to have MythTV, but it way too bloated for what I want to do.

I know that GNU/Linux does not need a firewall (due to iptables), but I would like a basic firewall that would watch incoming and outgoing connections. I would prefer it to have a try icon and be able to run as a regular user, such that I can add it to my .fluxbox/startup file. Anyone know of any good ones? They don't actually have to interface into iptables (because I would do that myself), but if they do it would be a bonus.

I have just switched from F10 to F12 via a fresh install. To be honest I am having difficulties getting around with the new release. For starters, watching movies causes one of my CPUs to go 100% when full screen. As you can guess watching movies doesnt go smooth. It happens on every possible player. It doesnt matter if I switch on or off compositing.
