Ubuntu Multimedia :: Watching Avi Files When Transferred To Usb Drive?
Feb 2, 2010
I transfer avi files on my usb drive to watch on my xbox. I have Ubuntu 9.10. When I watch the movie their are parts that skip or look messed up and sometimes freeze. When I transfer the avi files to my usb drive I do have a lot of other programs running so that could create problems when transferring the files. But it shouldn't right?

When I try watching HD or avi files with totem the sound and video skips then equalizes on its own, when I try in vlc same thing but I play with the sound until video and sound sync but there is slowness in video.mplayer won't start. I installed the gmplayer front end and I just get that but no video or sound, video won't play.

Say someone logs into a Centos Linux box and SCPs a file from /root/ called 'textfile.dat'
Is there any way to log into the Centos Linux box, later, and see that textfile.dat was SCP'd from the box?

I just purchased an Ibiza Rhapsody the other day, and installed Gnomad2 to transfer my library of mp3's to it. Once the transfer finished, only about half the number of songs showed up on the Ibiza as there were songs I was transferring over. All of them are proper mp3 files. Also, none of the files that transferred over can be played by the Ibiza. Sometimes it pops up an error message that it can not play the audio, but mostly it sits on the song and does not play. It reads the title and artist out of the MP3, but I guess it doesn't get the real data, considering the lack of playing, coupled with the fact that it does not show a length/timeleft for the song when I go to play it. In adddition, other mp3 players I've used come up in the filesystem, mount, etc, and you can browse it, directly paste in mp3's, etc (Makes life much easier). With this, it does not show up on the desktop like the others do, and I do not see it in the filesystem whatsoever. Upon plugging in, Ubuntu does realize something is happening, but thinks it is a camera and tries to import pictures. It's weird, because apparantly Gnomad picked it up (considering it transferred some files).

I was wondering if there is a way to tell rsync to only apply changes (delete, overwrite, create) only if all files in the file list transferred successfully.Just to clarify, this would essentially be putting a transaction around the transfer.

I recently bought a Samsung LED TV C5000 40", and I'm trying to watch an .mkv file from my pendrive, but it says, "Not Supported Video Codec".
I saw in the TV's user guide and it says it supports .mkv.
I don't know how to get the info about the mkv, but using "themonospot" I got:
- SubtitleTrack01 [eng]S_TEXT/UTF8
- VideoTrack01 V_MPEG4/ISO/AVC (1920x816)
- AudioTrack01 [eng]A_AC3- 48000 Hz - 6 channels

I have a PVR-150 for recording TV shows.
I can record shows using this command:
Code:
cat /dev/video0 > /mnt/raid/show.mpg
I can watch the show.mpg file while its recoding using VLC, Xine, Mplayer... pretty much any video player.
This is nice because i can pause, rewind, and fast-forward live TV, just like all the commercial DVRs out there.
The problem with this method is returning to "Live TV" mode. When using a commercial DVR, when you are fast-forwarding and reach "Live TV", the player stops fast-forwarding and begins playing the live TV in real-time. When doing the same thing with Xine or VLC, the player simply stops when you reach the EOF.
Is there a player that mimics this? When it get close to the EOF, it switches from Fast-Forward to play?
I used to have MythTV, but it way too bloated for what I want to do.

I'm just getting started with Ubuntu 64-Bit. Basically, I have Totem Movie Player and VLC Media Player installed and every time I watch a movie in either one of them. If I tab out of them or minimize them, when I bring the media player back up the screen is black. The sound still works perfectly but I can't see the movie and I've tried several media players out and they all do the same thing. Basically I can't multitask or bring up anything else while I watch a movie or I have to restart the player because of the media screen going black.
I'm not sure if my computer specs will help but here they are:
Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid 64-Bit
Intel Xeon X3210 2.13GHz Quad
4GB DDR2-800 RAM
ATI Radeon 4870 512MB Videocard

Is there a way to avoid sudden increases in volume while watching movies? The problem is the difference between the volume of the dialogs & that of the special effects (example: firing of a bullet ,a car crash, a lightning strike & similar). Is there a way to limit the volume to a certain level ? I tried volume normalization filter of both vlc & smplayer. But none seems effective.
OS:Lucid 64
MM App :vlc , smplayer
Speaker Setup : 2.0 (Stereo)

I'm trying to watch some of my college's sports online, and they are set-up to use silver-light, but for me it is epic fail. Seems like others are having similar problems, but that is why this is a FAQ, or a FOP, frequently occurring problem. And if I don't post it again, its not treated as a frequent occurring problem. The college page suggests that I use moonlight to watch, but the iced/tea program it recommended broke other programs operation.

I have Kaffeine version 1.1 and KDE 4.4.4 release 2 installed on OpenSUSE 11.3. During watching video in Kaffeine the powersave will start and after 30seconds will switch my computer off. When I watch video in Xine I do not have this problem (screen saver timeout is set to 10 seconds). I have not found this option in xine-config.

I'm using Debian Squeeze with Fluxbox and I'm having a problem with xscreensaver. I've set to blank screen after 10 minutos of inactivity, but the problem is that when I'm watching a movie, the screen is blanked after 10 minutes too. So I have to manually kill xscreensaver before starting to see a movie, or I have to move my mouse / press keyboard every 10 minutes to activate the screen again.
I've done some search before posting and I only found something about a SMPlayer's option named "Disable screensaver", but it is already on and it has no effect preventing xscreensaver to work. Here is a screen shoot of my SMPlayer configuration window:
[URL]
Apparently, xscreensaver isn't being able to recognize that another program is running. Could it be related to dbus?
PS: I had a dbus problem when I first upgraded to squeeze, my multimedia keys stoped working in banshee (whenever I clicked to play/pause/next etc, another banshee process was started), but I solved it by adding this line to my ~/.xinitrc: eval "$(dbus-launch --sh-syntax --exit-with-session)"

I am running openSUSE 11.1 on a Pentium Dual Core 2.5 (E5200) Processor, 2GB RAM and an NVidia 8400GS PCI Express display card. When I intitially installed my system I also installed VLC media player, at that time it was version 1.0.1, Mplayer and SMplayer a few codecs for K3B, handbrake for DVD ripping etc. That was also the only time since my computer has been online, i have never updated it since. And it had no problems whatsoever. Among other things I use my system to watch DVD's. I watched many DVD's and video clips flawlessly.
Now all of a sudden when watching DVD's and video clips the DVD playback flickkers red (the color red). I am not sure what causes it and it is very irritating. It flickkers even more with video clips. With a DVD it dissappears after a while but as soon as you move your mouse pointer or click on the screen it starts to flickker red again.I thought it was my NVidia card that might be faulty, but I booted up from a Puppy linux live-cd and I played a DVD from there and it works 100%.

thought I'd take the plunge and use it as the OS for a new HTPS running XBMC. I installed a second 1TB HDD to use as a media tank that I formatted to NTFS. All is well except I cannot get XBMC to see the second drive. Its mounted and I can access it no worries, but when I go into Videos,> add source, > i'm given the home folder and my network as options, neither of which have the second drive on them. (my windows network can see the second drive but it doesn't appear as an option in XBMC

I have mentioned this in another thread elsewhere but perhaps this is a better location. In Opensuse 11.3 I was able to play files on my NAS drive from within smplayer over samba shares or ftp. I would simply use dolphin to browse to the file on the nas drive (either through samba or ftp protocol), double click the .avi file and it would load smplayer and begin playing immediately.
In 11.4 I have samba set up using the same smb.conf file However, if I double click the .avi file it copies the entire contents to the local computer before launching smplayer. If I use smplayer's file selector and navigate to the file on the samba share I get the message "you can only select local files" This is a different behaviour to that from 11.3 However, using the ftp protocol from within dolphin smplayer launches immediately and begins playing. smplayer is launched using the shortcut command
Code:
smplayer %U
Does anybody have any suggestions on a workaround or how to correct? Using kaffeine I have no problems. Double click the file on the nas drive and kaffeine launches immediately and begins playing.

I am in a bit of a pinch here, as I had to get a server up and running fast after a crash, and then just configured a 10.04 LiveCD session to do what I needed. As you may figure, this is, however, not an especially good long term solution, so I will need to do a reinstall of the server. My question is: will the settings and installed software in the live session automatically be transferred when I do the install?

I manage a small home network of 5-6 PCs and other devices. One of the PCs is used as a multipurpose server, as well as the gateway to outside.
Sometimes, I need to know what traffic goes in/out of my network (for troubleshooting, etc).
Is there a quick and dirty way to forward a copy of all the packets on the external interface to my own ip when I want to?
