Ubuntu Networking :: Wired Network Connection Lowers Link Speed Repeatedly

Apr 1, 2011

I believe I'm running Kubuntu 10.04, but don't quote me on that. Here's the version string from dmesg. Linux version 2.6.32-31-generic (buildd@crested) (gcc version 4.4.3 (Ubuntu 4.4.3-4ubuntu5) ) #60-Ubuntu SMP Thu Mar 17 22:15:39 UTC 2011 (Ubuntu 2.6.32-31.60-generic 2.6.32.32+drm33.14 I have an emergent problem with my wired ethernet resetting the connection on a frequent basis. When it resets it re-negotiates the link speed and I often end up with a 10Mb/s link and on some occasions a 100Mb/s. The configured speed for the link is 1000Mb/s full duplex using a preup ethtool command. I do not use NetworkManager but have the interface configured in /etc/network/interfaces.

Ubuntu Networking :: 10.10 - Low Download Speed On Wireless Connection

Feb 22, 2011

I have installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my Dell Latitude D830 laptop using the Wubi installer. Everything seems to be working fine except for my wireless connection. When I plug in my wired connection and test on speedtest.net I get download speeds of 20MB/second. However, when I switch to my wireless connection, I barely break 1MB/second. I have an Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG wireless adapter. I have scoured this forum, Google, everywhere I can think of to find a solution and none seem to work for me. I love Ubuntu but this might be a deal breaker...

Networking :: Throttle Client Connection Speed From NAT Server

Sep 5, 2010

I have about 5 computers on my network that get their internet connection from a Linux NAT server.

192.168.12.02 is a Linux server that has a NAT set up to share the internet connection.
192.168.12.03 is a download server that is almost always downloading
192.168.12.05 - 192.168.12.20 is assigned by DHCP to users.

I want to make it so that the download server runs at full speed but is throttled only when someone from the user IP addresses range tries to use the NAT server.I think I'm looking for some way to set the download server's packets to have a lower priority than the client's packets. Is there a way to set this in the Linux server?

General :: Wireless Networking - Wi-Fi Connection Download Speed Is Cut In Half In Mint?

Sep 19, 2011

I have a pretty decent DSL connection that usually gave me about 105KB/second download speed over wifi. The "official" download speed was 1.5 megabits so I should have been getting a bit more, but that's not my question.

I recently switched to Mint from Ubuntu. Now my download speed is significantly slower, to the tune of 45 KB/second. Since the connection runs at normal speed when I connect via an ethernet cable, my guess is that mint doesn't give enough power to the wifi card. Is there any way I can fix that?

Ubuntu Networking :: Network Transfer Speed Only 11.3Mb/s

Jun 19, 2011

I just noticed that files are transferring between my two computers at no more than 11.3Mb/s no matter what I do.

I regularly use sshfs to mount a drive on my main computer. But after noticing a dismal speed of 10Mb/s when copying a file, I thought maybe sshfs is slow. So I tried scp, and I'm getting 11.3Mb/s with scp. Using the blowfish cypher gave me no change to this, still exactly 11.3Mb/s.

I have a Gigabit network except for the cable, which is a 10meter, 100Mb/s cable.
I have a custom modified sysctl.conf file which I'll post here if needed.

Is there anything I can do about this pathetic speed ? Maybe a modification to my ssh config ? sysctl ? anything ?

Fedora Networking :: Network Speed Depends On Installation?

Jul 27, 2011

probably this is the most idiotic question and probably i know the answer. But I want to get confirmed. Is it anyway possible that my mobile broadband speed is slow because of my installation is wrong? actually, I formatted my machine and make it dual-boot. After that my mobile-broadband speed is horrible slow. I installed (a)kmod-wl and as dependency, broadcom-wl but my lspci only shows intel network manager.

Code:
$ lspci|grep Network
17:03:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Device 008a (rev 34)

can this be related or just coincidence?

Ubuntu Networking :: 10.04 Lucid Lynx Network WiFi Slow Speed

May 18, 2010

A lot of people have the problem to find themselves with Lucid Lynx 10.04 and experience massive issues when connecting to wireless - me too. As a service, here some relevant links which promise relief:

[code]...

I tried all of them, and none reliably worked. Every solution which required re-association wtih the AP helped for some time, but nothing helped for long. First, don't let yourself fool by the disable IPv6 trap - while it is "enabled" it is acutally not used by Lucid! I have a clean install of Kubuntu 10.04 on an AMD64 Laptop with Broadcom STA driver: 03:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4328 802.11a/b/g/n (rev 03) However I can reliably stabilize my connection for some time either by manually disabling WiFi with the hardware switch or disabling WiFi by software means and re-activating. This brings speed at par with Kubuntu 9.10 until some time. Can anybody confirm this behaviour?

Ubuntu Networking :: 10.10 - In Network Manager Can View Wifi Networks Fine But Cannot Connect

Apr 28, 2011

I have been an Ubuntu user for a year or so. My level is still ultra n00b but I am trying. Whenever I update Ubuntu there is always a WiFi problem, always. So now I am having problems getting wifi to work in 10.10. In Network Manager I can view wifi networks fine but I cannot connect. I tried with wicd also but I got as far as "getting ip" and then it would hang up.

lspci

Code:

Code:

Code:

I am not sure what driver I am using as I don't know how to exactly ID my driver. I know there is a way to ID the driver using airodump-ng but I have yet to find it.
I have a feeling this is a driver issue as one time I was able to establish a connection that then dropped a few minutes later. I have a feeling I should be disabling/removing the current driver and replacing it with ipw3945 or possibly a driver ndiswrapped? The problem is I cannot figure out how to remove the current driver.

I was going to switch back to 9.04 but I thought I would try to manually figure this one out instead of taking the easy way.

Fedora Networking :: Bridged Networking And NetworkManager - No Network Connection Because Network Isn't Managed

The real problem is that now I can't use my VPN connections (I have many) in NetworkManager.

Is there a way to have both of these pieces of functionality?

I am using FC14

Fedora Networking :: Unknown Network Activity Kills Internet Speed

Jul 13, 2009

I upgraded from Fedora 10 to Fedora 11 last night in response to a pop up window. When I rebooted after the upgrade my wife immediately complained about the internet not working. Actually the connection up was working but Fedora 11 upgrade had made it slow almost to a stop There are two XP machines the network behind a local D-Link wireless router with Comcast high speed internet. When I disable networking on the Fedora machine the internet connection immediately returns to normal on the other two machines. Also there is a second or two period after enabling networking for a quick upload or download before the connection clogs.I checked the system monitor network history and found that there is a constant networking send rate of just under 180 kb/s in the background. This occurs even when the browser, email client, and automatic backup are off and the only process showing significant CPU use in the system monitor is the monitor itself.

I tried netstat but there were so many /tmp/orbit entries that I could not scroll up to the top of the listing. Is this normal. If so, does anyone know the netstat command options to just see connections with sent packets. I also tried ifconfig -a. This shows no Rx packets at all, and no TX packets except on eth0, The total etho TX packets matches t,he reported by the system monitor, and in the monitor you can watch the total accumulate in approx 180 kb/sec increments. I don't understand why 180kb/sec TX would make a dramatic difference in internet network internet speed. Comcast reports upload speeds in megabytes. I need to be able to use the net in Federa, but I am also curious to learn what is the caused the problem.
