Is there a way by which i can improve my Internet speed. I have a 100Mbps connection but the download speed is only 100kbps. I know that my ISP has limited by connection speed, but i am curious to try as to how i can get the maximum speed.

Comcast says I should have 12 Mbps connection... if I get 1.0 Mbps, I'm doing good... they just tested everything, and said everything is fine on their end. Reading forums, I see that folks have said there is a network connection problem with 9.10... and then I see that others are saying the same thing about 10.04 and 10.10!! I have 10.10 on my laptop and had to fight to get its Atheos card to be recognized. Running some tests [URL] gives me weird results: Download 2.64 Mbps, Upload 4.12 Mbps. NOT what it should be. Similar results from testmy.net.
Dunno exactly what info is needed... Speedguide.net gives me results below, but I've tried changing numbers (says my RWIN is low) and nothing changes:

So, today, find, once again, that I'm d'ling in the range of 90/KB/s (719 Kbps)... disgustingly slow. I go on my HP laptop and run the test, and it says 1.6 Mbps. So, desktop directly connected to router is not even 1 Mbps, and wireless connection is faster? Neither of which is close to what I should be getting...

When I upload a file to an internal Ubuntu server the speed is ok ~15MB/s.
The problem is only with Internet Firefox / synaptic, any program using Internet. Last download done with synaptic display 18KB/s when normally it should be 500.

I am connecting from this Ubuntu 9.10 computer to a WRT54G running dd-wrt, over WPA2 AES. Normally, everything works fine and I get very satisfactory download speeds; usually 1.5+ Mbps. Sometimes though, usually after restarting networking a lot, i.e. /etc/init.d/networking restart, the download speed seems to be limited to around 64-70 kbps. It also happened recently when I disconnected from a vpn with vpnc. It's really strange because it has nothing to do with changing any settings.
The only things I can think of are POSSIBLY wpa_supplicant causing problems because that's the only thing besides networking that's restarted. It could be related to my router config but I can't imagine what because it runs so fast normally. Rebooting the router doesn't fix it. Restarting the network, manually killing wpa_supplicant, rebooting the router. None of these seem to fix it. The only way I've found is to just reboot. Obviously, something breaks at some point that isn't affected again by anything but a reboot.
I have a little bit of a prediciment with my Mobile Broadband dongle, even though I know I'm in a 3G area (Dongle Supports 3G connection) my internet still loads at the normal GPRS speeds max of 5kb/s. Is there anyway to change the speed of it or do I have to keep with GPRS at the moment?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI am currently staying on a university campus in Taiwan. Internet on Ubuntu Lucid 64bit here is often painfully slow, except for connections to Taiwanese websites. I dual boot with Windows 7, and there is no problem there. For instance, I downloaded the same piece of software (Spideroak) on both Win and Ubuntu, with Ubuntu I had to try repeatedly as the download would not complete, and in the end it took several hours to download. On W7, it took 10 minutes. What is Windows and Ubuntu doing differently?
I tried disabling ipv6 for this session by running sudo sysctl -w net.ipv6.conf.all.disable_ipv6=1, as a number of posts mention improving connection speed that way, but no effect.
I know that websites from Taiwan are working well, because I am getting my Ubuntu updates from a Taiwanese mirror: updates are fast, except for packages in the 'partner' repos (presumably not loaded from the mirror) which take hours to load, if at all. I don't want to depend on Windows for large downloads... (I don't want to depend on Windows for anything).
I'm wondering if there is anything I can do to get the best speeds possible. I pay for 16mb/s connection (with charter) and I was getting about 4mb/s. After upgrading firmware, and changing some encryption settings on my router, that went up to about 6mb/s. It's improvement, and I'm happy with that, but I'm looking for that 10 more mb/s
So, is there anything in Ubuntu to tweak to optimize connection speeds? Also, if it affects anything, I'm using a linksys WRT320N router. I was going to use the 5.0ghz band, but my wireless adapter is an 802.11gb, so I'm stuck with 2.4.

It's probably something simple enough to do, but I'm just learning my way around the linux command shell, so some simple instructions on how to create and run such a script would be great [CentOS 5]. I have full root access to the server and I'm the only user on it if it matters.
I have the following nasty issue:I am using fedora 12 and I use vpn for working remote.When I browse the internet the speed is very slow!even when I do a yum update it downloads the packages with max 100kb. if I drop the vpn connection I download the packages with 1Mbdo you know what the problem could be? i created the vpn connection using the network manager...it is a regular pptp connection for the vpn!

I'm on Ubuntu 10.04 and I'm having problems with internet speeds on wifi. I have tried the two available networks on my university campus and both of them are very slow with 10.04. I'm not having problems with Windows 7 running on these networks. Although, the wired network works perfectly fine, with normal speeds. View 2 Replies View RelatedI upgraded from Fedora 10 to Fedora 11 last night in response to a pop up window. When I rebooted after the upgrade my wife immediately complained about the internet not working. Actually the connection up was working but Fedora 11 upgrade had made it slow almost to a stop There are two XP machines the network behind a local D-Link wireless router with Comcast high speed internet. When I disable networking on the Fedora machine the internet connection immediately returns to normal on the other two machines. Also there is a second or two period after enabling networking for a quick upload or download before the connection clogs.I checked the system monitor network history and found that there is a constant networking send rate of just under 180 kb/s in the background.This occurs even when the browser, email client, and automatic backup are off and the only process showing significant CPU use in the system monitor is the monitor itself.
I tried netstat but there were so many /tmp/orbit entries that I could not scroll up to the top of the listing. Is this normal. If so, does anyone know the netstat command options to just see connections with sent packets. I also tried ifconfig -a. This shows no Rx packets at all, and no TX packets except on eth0, The total etho TX packets matches t,he reported by the system monitor, and in the monitor you can watch the total accumulate in approx 180 kb/sec increments. I don't understand why 180kb/sec TX would make a dramatic difference in internet network internet speed. Comcast reports upload speeds in megabytes. I need to be able to use the net in Federa, but I am also curious to learn what is the caused the problem.
I have a Fedora 11 system and cbq.init-v0.7.3 in it. Now I want to restrict upload speed from my ftp server to Internet (eth1). According to docs I've made a simple file /etc/sysconfig/cbq/cbq- 00.inet_upload_restrict:

I've been using Ubuntu for a while (though I would not consider myself an "expert") and have just gone back to school. I live on campus and connect to the network through an ethernet cord. On Windows, the download speed is 1 Mb/s by default, but if you go through and configure the network card (turning off the auto-negotiation and setting the speed to 10, duplex full) the download speed will increase to 10 Mb/s, a considerable difference. So, I tried to do this in Ubuntu by opening the terminal and typing the following:
sudo ethtool -s eth0 autoneg off speed 10 duplex full and all of a sudden, my computer isn't connecting to the internet. When I type: sudo ethtool -s eth0 autoneg on it suddenly starts working again.

Anyways, one thing I have been noticing ever since I got Ubuntu but never really questioned, was about my download speeds. When downloading a torrent in Windows, I topped out out about 2.0 mb/s. Where as in my Ubuntu install, running the same torrent program (utorrent) and downloading the same file, I was getting 3.0 mb/s. I was wondering, what is it about Ubuntu that is utilizing my internet connection better? Only a hand ful of times have I ever reached 3.0 in my windows install (such as right now while I am downloading a game through steam).

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm having a strange problem with data transfers between systems. I have a file server + my desktop. Both are running Debian 8.3. I have a samba share running on the file server and I mount the shares on my desktop on boot via /etc/fstab
When I copy a file using the nautilus from my home folder (on my HDD) on my desktop to the mounted network location, my transfers start out at gigabit speeds 80MB/s-90MB/s for a couple seconds and then drop down to about 8MB/s
But when I terminate the transfer and then use scp to transfer the same file, I get consistent gigabit speed throughout the transfer. I am not sure what is going on.
I just want to use Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) to connect to the internet. I have done a massive amount of troubleshooting, but some of it seems to contradict itself, and the only two things that I know for sure are that it used to work, and that my Ethernet cable is not the problem. When I use Terminal utilities like ifup and dhclient it seems that it can not determine IP information, but when I try to put it in manually, the "Apply" button grays out right after I finish typing it in. When I try to connect normally, in KDE or GNOME, the icon acts like it's connecting, then instead of having the connected icon, I receive a notification that "the network has been disconnected", and it goes back to the disconnected icon.
Oh, and by the way, I know that I could probably find a workaround, but I have limited resources, and this used to work. The Linux is a Dell desktop with Fedora 12 and the Windows is a Windows 7 HP laptop.EDIT: I hope that I didn't mess something up, but I accidentally used system-network-config to try putting in the IP address there, and ended up changing it back to the original settings, but the computer is now calling it Auto Ethernet in the taskbar icon, although sudo iwconfig in the terminal still calls it eth0.
