Ubuntu :: Software Center And Update Manager Not Working After Adding Repository?

Apr 8, 2011

I tried to install emergent using following guide:[URL](Ubuntu) However, I did not succeed, it seems that it could not install emergent properly. My far worse problem now is that it messed up my software center and update manager. I get following error message when starting the software-center:

Code:

Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/share/software-center/softwarecenter/apt/aptcache.py", line 105, in open
self._cache = apt.Cache(GtkMainIterationProgress())
File "/usr/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/apt/cache.py", line 88, in __init__

[code]....

Could not initialize the package information An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information. Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message: 'E:Malformed line 59 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list (dist parse)'

Ubuntu :: Error In Update Manager After Manually Adding Repository?

Jul 14, 2010

Some while ago I decided to add Firefox repository directly through terminal. (Idea born when I saw in one old page (yes, never look for info in old pages ) "tutorial" how to do it.) The whole idea was simple: just add one line in terminal. The line was like this:sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mozillateam/firefox-stableBut since that, when I try to update through update manager I get errors:Quote:

W: GPG error: http://ppa.launchpad.net lucid Release: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY D45DF2E8FC91AE7E

Ubuntu Installation :: Update Manager - Software Center Do Not Work

Jan 13, 2011

Update manager and software center both run, but when I click on "install," they both just sit there and don't respond. If I run software center from a command line, I get the error "WARNING - _on_trans_error: org.freedesktop.PolicyKit.Error.Failed." (There are no updates right now, so I can't get an error from the update manager.) Apparently they aren't invoking gksudo or whatever it is they need to elevate privileges. I can get around this by running them as root, but it is kind of annoying. I'm really surprised that no one else has had this problem, but I've searched it a number of times and I can't find any indication of someone having the same symptoms.

Ubuntu Installation :: Update Manager / Software Sources / Synaptic Package Manager Not Working?

Sep 30, 2010

It started with Update Manager constantly recycling and not updating. When it starts it shows 295 files and 308MB waiting to download. When I click on 'Install Updates' it appears to go through the process, and then presents me with the same 'waiting to install' window again - and again, and again - in fact as many times as I care to click the 'Install Updates' button. No error messages appear. The 'Settings' button produces the same apparent process as the 'Install Updates' button, but doesn't present me with any other screen.

I've tried all the solutions I could find on these forums and nothing works. The sudo suggestions for Terminal usually produce error codes. adjusting a line in the 'hosts' file. When I tried this I was presented with the obstacle of not having access to the read-only file, and no matter how much I searched I couldn't find how to gain access . While investigating all these possible solutions, I was directed in turn to the Software Sources and Synaptic Package Manager applications, but when I attempted to start them, 'Starting Administrative Application' appeared briefly on the taskbar - and then disappeared!

Ubuntu Installation :: Update Manager Not Working?

Aug 6, 2011

Update manager on my computer (running ubuntu 10.04) isn't working. I can open it up from the System menu, but when I press "check" or "Install updates" it the cursor just spins in circles like it's thinking but it never does anything. I can't even quit the program.

I recently did two things that might have caused the problem.

1) I upgraded yesterday from 8.04 to 10.04. I don't remember if I ran Upgrade Manager or not earlier today but I think I might have.

2) I have a dual-boot system and I re-partitioned my hard drive this evening. I shrunk the partition with Ubuntu on it, moved the swap partition over, and expanded the Windows partition. The first time I logged in after re-partitioning the hard drive I got an information message saying that the Update manager hadn't loaded correctly. That was when I first noticed the problem, so I suspect that it has something to do with me moving around files in the re-partitioning.

Ubuntu Networking :: Update Manager Behind Proxy Not Working In 10.10?

Dec 10, 2010

I was having trouble getting update-manager to work behind a proxy (without authentication). I tried everything I could find in my search, including setting http_proxy environment variable, setting the System->Preferences->Network Proxy and setting the Synaptic package manager proxy settings. Nothing seemed to work.

It turns out that the problem was that the System->Preferences->Network Proxy allows "automatic" proxy (pac file), and I had used that. update-manager doesn't do anything with this setting I guess. I changed from the automatic setting to a host/port manual setting and it began working.

I suspect this qualifies as a bug. update-manager should do something more reasonable than quietly fail if the settings are for automatic - it would be really nice if it worked, and if not then an error message.

Ubuntu :: VLC Repository Is Way Out Of Date / How To Update Repository

Jan 8, 2011

Version 1.0.6 does not even have a REPEAT icon button for the control panel. But newer versions do. Running Windows I can download VLC version 1.1.5 and make use of a REPEAT icon.Is there a way to update the repository? Or a way to tell Ubuntu developers that the VLC repository is way out of date and needs updating? I'm running 10.04 LTS--I thought this was supposed to deliver longterm updates?
