Ubuntu Networking :: Unable To Stay Online/problems Logging On?

Sep 15, 2010

What happens is that it seems the system has problems logging onto the wireless network. Once I have tipped in the router access code it sometimes logs on immediately, but most of the time it keeps searching for a long time before logging on if at all.Once I have a connection established it is very unstabile. After a few minutes it logs off and starts searching for the network again, asking for the access code every 2 or 3 minutes. Sometimes it finds the network again and sometimes not.As you can probably understand, this significantly reduces the euphoric enthusiasm over having sacked mr. Bill Gates from my life. I should mention at this point that I am a regular pc user with little indepth knowledge and experience so any advice has to be like teaching a bonobo monkey rocket science.

Fedora Networking :: Netgear WG111v2 Wireless Adapter Won't Stay Online

Jan 28, 2010

I just installed Fedora 12 on my HP a430n PC.I used to run Fedora 10, then moved to Linux Mint 7, then to Ubuntu 9.10 and now I am back to Fedora because I want to become more adept with manual package installation and adding repos.When I ran Fedora 12 immediately after then install, before running yum update PackageKit or the software update, it would use my wireless adapter (Netgear WG111v2) and connect to and stay connected to a network just fine. No hiccups.After running the updates and restarting the computer, the wlan won't stay connected for longer than 20 seconds, which is frustrating when trying to install mp3 codecs.

This seems to be a bug in the latest driver update for the WG111v2, but I might be wrong. Anyone have a fix or a way to revert back to the initial driver (I don't know what the original wireless driver was called).

Ubuntu :: Unable To Run Eve Online

May 2, 2011

i am using VMware player, on it i have dedicated 40gb of my hdd and 1gb of my ram for Ubuntu 10.04. i installed eve-online using WINE 1.2 and followed some instructions from a thread of eve online forums [URL]

Quote: to avoid some random crashes launch eve with the command: wine explorer /desktop=EVE1,1920x1200"C:Program FilesCCPEVEeve.exe" this emulates a desktop in wine. replace 1920x1200 with the resolution of your monitor

i changed the res to 800x600 and attempted to load eve, the splash window loads up and then nothing, the splash window dissapears and i am left with the background of the WINE UI (in which case i cannot close the wine window either) i then attempted to find out my graphics card and i cannot find it using

$ lspci
$ lspci -v
$ lspci -v | less
[Code]....

i then tried to hardware drivers, in which case there are none shown from system>administration>hardware drivers. I then attempted to change my screen resolution or modify my display settings in which case i got Quote: It appears that your graphics driver does not support the necessary extensions to use this tool. Do you want to use your graphics driver vendor's tool instead? Quote: You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server.

at this time i will say my graphics card is a geforce 8600GTS 256mb let me know if i am missing information which will help resolve the problem, but be warned, if u require the info, u are litterally going to need to spell out to me what info and how to get it, as i am not used to commands

Ubuntu Networking :: 10.10 Won't Stay Connected

Mar 24, 2011

I am running a dual-boot with Ubuntu 10.10 and Windows 7 and I can't stay connected to the internet with Ubuntu, but Windows does. My router is a D-Link GamerLounge DGL-4500. I have wireless internet access for about 10 seconds but then it drops. Access to the router doesn't go away though. Other computers can connect to it just fine, and my computer (Toshiba Satellite A505) has connected to every other one I've tried on. I can still log in to it and change settings and all that, but I can't access the internet through it. I also can't ping the router.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Adapter Just Won't Stay On / Fix It?

May 29, 2010

I've recently installed 10.04 LTS on an old laptop. I've not been able to connect to the internet at all. I finally finagled some drivers for my Broadcom BCM4318, and seemed to get everything in order, but it says that the "Radio hardware status changed to DISABLED"

Then, I pushed the button on the laptop to turn the wireless on, and it worked! But then as soon as I let the button go, it turned off. Is there some way to toggle it so it's always on?

Ubuntu Networking :: VPN Connection Will Not Stay Alive

Feb 21, 2011

As part of my transition moving away from Windows altogether, I've been trying to get the VPN to work properly under Ubuntu 10.10 32bit, through the wifi connection. The provider is Ivacy, using PPTP, and the usual instructions (below) are followed: [URL]. The VPN originally connects fine, browsing etc works all fine, for a limited period of time though. Within roughly 10min the connection stops working; I'm not yet sure whether the determining factor is time or bandwidth, but it remains short-lived...

There is no indication of the VPN connection dropping, it seems to remain connected, but no packets are received. To get the internet working again I have to manually disconnect from the VPN; then I can browse without the VPN, or reconnect the VPN and it will work for another small lapse of time. In addition, I'm not sure if this related, but after reconnecting a few times to the VPN as described above, eventually I get an error message, "failed to start the VPN service" (or words to that effect). The VPN connection worked very reliably under Windows.

Networking :: How To Get DNS Settings To Stay Either Cli Or Gui

Mar 14, 2010

I have a project with a small device which is running xubuntu. Running DHCP all works fine, but we are sending this out to a client who gave us some specific IP settings.There is nothing GUI wise, which is nothing tragic, so I updated the interfaces file with the static info as well as the /etc/resolv.conf file and rebooted. The static info worked but had no DNS, and all that was in that file was;#SETUP by Network Manager (or something close as I am not at the office).

You can run via cli NetworkManager but does nothing. I installed I think it was called KNetworkManager which is a GUI to the app, but when started it shows the eth0 device as in use so I am assuming something else is managing.So basically how can I get the DNS settings to stay either cli or gui..

Ubuntu Networking :: 10.10 Won't Stay Connected To Wireless Internet?

Dec 27, 2010

I am running Ubuntu 10.10 on a Dell Dimension 4700 desktop computer. I just upgraded to 10.10 from the previous version after getting my D-Link wireless adapter back after loaning it out. My internet now won't stay connected. I can connect when I firstrn on the computer, with after 2-5 minutes it drops the connection and gives me the "Wireless Network Authentication Required" prompt. It won't connect again without unplugging the adapter and plugging it back in.I borrowed a Belkin wirelss adapter to try it, and it does the exact same thing. PLEASE can someone help me, I really need the internet up on the computer(Also, when I first got the adapter-- while running the old version of Ubuntu-- it would not recognize or connect at all and I spent 4 hours messing with drivers and settings to get it to work, which it did flawlessly. Until I upgraded.)

Ubuntu Networking :: Can't Get Online With Dial-up

Jan 9, 2010

I'm having trouble getting online, and therefore getting software, codecs etc, (I'm using another computer for this post) because the only option I have to connect to the web is through 56k dial-up modem, and this is apparently akward with ubuntu. I'm currently trying to work out how to get Ubuntu to recognize my modem. I have over-written Vista, which was previously on my laptop, although I did make recovery discs (though I really don't want to have to use them).

This is making it difficult for me to even find the model of my modem (it would involve reinstalling Vista and checking for the device under device manager, or Vista equivalent).I was advised to download the "Official Ubuntu documentation", and that this had a 'how to' section regarding dial-up modems. I downloaded it and searched it and found nothing as such. I also have downloaded the Ubuntu pocket guide and found nothing on the topic in it either.I can get online (via dial-up) on my XP machine, and also have USB storage sticks.

Ubuntu Networking :: 10.04 - Impossible To Get Online

Jul 11, 2010

After installing 10.04 netbook remix on my acer aspire one, I have experienced all sorts of trouble. I can't get online, not with the wireless network, or with a usb-cable directly from the router. When I try to install the hardware drivers i get a message: there are no hardware drivers installed or something like that. There are no other OS on the harddrive, just 10.04 netbook remix. Another problem is the startup. Sometimes it boots right away, other times I've have to restart/reboot. 3-4 times before it works. How comes? Is there any way to download the missing packages/firmware to a usb-stick and then install it on the the netbook?

Ubuntu Networking :: Logging On To Joikuspot

Mar 20, 2010

I have a program for my Nokia E52 smartphone called Joikuspot. It creates a ad-hoc network and acts as internet gateway. But Ubuntu has a really hard time logging on to the network. Most times it takes several minutes before the network even shows up in the network manager applet, and when it does it might take many tries before the computer get a DHCP address from the phone. When it finally does happen, everything works great and the connection is fast and stable. There is no problems when i try to access the ad-hoc network with a XP machine. I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 on a Dell Inspirion 6400 with proprietary Broadcom STA driver for the network card.

Networking :: Can't Get Online In Anything But Gnome?

Aug 20, 2010

I am so frustrated. I've gone through at least 20 distros in the last couple of days trying to find one that I like and will actually let me go online. I'm kinda bored of Gnome and want to try KDE again, but Knetworkmanager and even WICD don't let me get online. They recognize my wifi dongle, see the available networks, log me into them, tell me I'm connected and getting a good signal, but then I can't even ping Google! No pages will load. I've stumbled around all the network-managing and configuration screens, but nothing has worked.

Look, I'm clearly not a techie. I'm a happy end-user who's been exclusive with Mint for the last 2 years (PCLOS for a year before that) and I've never had to configure squat in either one of them, because they work perfectly out of the box. I'm not opposed to punching stuff into a terminal if it comes down to that, but I'd rather not have to...

Anyway, what can I do to fix this? (My wifi dongle works fine. I just tried it in Mint again.) For the record, the top three distros I'm considering are Sidux, Sabayon K and OpenSuse. I'm not getting internet on those. Ah, and the Mint KDE edition either.

My question is: Is there a way to automatically connect / log onto the SHAREDDRIVE during bootup so I don't have to remember (this is VERY difficult for me!!!) manually log onto it?
