Ubuntu Networking :: Log Into A Drive Automatically When Logging?
Feb 23, 2010
I am sure this is somewhere in the forums but since I don't know any of the buzz words associated with what I am trying to doI haven't had any lucksearching. Here's the deal:I have 1 physical drive. On it, I have a partition for XP, a partition for Karmic and a partition for all my data so I can share between XP and Karmic. When I boot in Karmic, I need to select the data drive (called SHAREDDRIVE) and enter my password before any of my apps can access the data. My question is: Is there a way to automatically connect / log onto the SHAREDDRIVE during bootup so I don't have to remember (this is VERY difficult for me!!!) manually log onto it?

I have a couple apps that I cannot figure out how to prevent them from starting automatically upon logging in. They are NOT listed in my Startup Applications under preferences. For example, pidgin. Pidgin automatically starts at each login even though it is not in the startup apps nor can I find an option in pidgin itself. Tomboy is another. I always get an error that tomboy cannot be added to my panel when I restart. The error in the tomboy panel log is that tomboy is already running. Does ubuntu have a hidden "start up" folder like Windows does in the start menu? Where can I clear this file/folder?

I've checked and double checked that there is no user and password directive in /etc/my.cnf and ~/.my.cnf but it seems that every time I issue mysql it will drop me into the command line without prompting for a password or giving any pause. Of course, the only table I have access to when doing this is information_schema with read only on most of it and no access on the rest, but I was just wondering where else an auto-login style authentication could be coming from.

I have a network drive connect to my lan with iomega's iconnect device. I am getting tired of mounting the drive manually each time I want to use it. I would like therefore to have it mounted automatically on boot by placing a line in fstab, but since the computer (a laptop) won't always be connected to my home lan, this might cause problems. Is there a way to list the drive in fstab so if the drive is not present it will just move on?

I was wondering whether there is an inbuilt logging system in UNIX?
I ran and installation and the program opened up automatically but I can't find the program executable.
If I could find a log then I could locate this file.

I have a peer-to-peer network with 25 WinXP Pro computers. I have built a Linux (SuSE) server for the purpose of backing up My Documents, PST files and favourites. Each user has their own folder containing the sync'd files. Each folder is password protected. I have configured each users machine with a mapped 'S' drive, which is the sync'd data folder on the Linux computer. All of the computers seem to end up with a "disconnected network drive" status after either logging out for the day or after some time has elapsed. Some will connect with a double click but others prompt for a password. I have tried mapping the drive using the option "Connect using a different user name", which is fine until the user logs out and back in again. I use SyncToy as a scheduled task, but can't connect to these mapped drives automatically, so the sync process will not work unattended.

I am setting up a home server and have two hard drives. One is the main HD for system files and the other will be for personal files.
The personal HD is /dev/sdb.
I know I have to edit fstab in order to get it to mount automatically at boot, but I am having trouble with the commands.
I would like for it to mount at boot and have full read-write access from any user.

So my girlfriend came back from a holiday and it results that she somehow ( dont ask me how) wiped out vista from her hd pavillion laptop. There`s nothing there, the pc doesn't have a guarantee anymore so I thought, what the heck, I could install an ubuntu 10.4 there. It's a nice machine so it should run nicely.
I made her try ubuntu on my laptop and she likes it so she gave me a green light to do it. So how should I go about it? boot the live cd and when I get to the partition part just tell the installer to overwrite the whole c drive and make the partition automatically? I'm kind of a noob so I wouldnt want to mess things up more than what they are.

I have just installed 10.04 and am enjoying the quick clean boot. I have a dual-boot option as I have come over from XP. Most of my data is still on the old 'c:/' drive and I have to manually mount it every boot-up. Is there any way to automate this process?

The other day a power outage affected an SSH server I have running 9.04 (32-bit desktop ed.). I have two external USB hard drives used for cron-scheduled backups (one for rsync, one for an incremental) that are connected at all times. When I reboot, they no longer mount automatically until I login to the gnome desktop. As far as I can remember, they always mounted automatically before as disk-1 and disk-2, but now I have to login to the gnome desktop and then log back out.
I never had them listed in the fstab before since they just worked, & hope to avoid doing it this way since the drives sometimes get their paths (sdd and sde) interchanged. However, is the best way to fix this to use UUIDs in fstab vs. using sde or sdd? (such as in this post: 4highlight=external+hard+drives+don't+mount+boot Or maybeust remembering incorrectly & ubuntu doesn't mount them automatically until login? Sometimes I have to reboot remotely, & this problem would cause the rsync to fill up my system drive.

I have dual boot on my laptop. First OS is Windows XP and second is Ubuntu 10.10.
When I click on places menu in Ubuntu, I can access Windowz XP Drives.
If I access some pdf file or document while in Ubuntu which is in Windows XP Drive, then it will come in Recent Document in Places menu.
Now I restart Ubuntu and click on Recent Documents and click on the document which I accessed in last session ( before restart ).
It says Unable to Open Document.
Then I click Places again and access my Windows XP drive. Then again I click Recent Document and click on document, I am able to open the document.
My guess is this happens because my windows drives are not mounted automatically when I start Ubuntu. How can I mount Windows drive automatically when I start Ubuntu.

I have a program for my Nokia E52 smartphone called Joikuspot. It creates a ad-hoc network and acts as internet gateway. But Ubuntu has a really hard time logging on to the network. Most times it takes several minutes before the network even shows up in the network manager applet, and when it does it might take many tries before the computer get a DHCP address from the phone. When it finally does happen, everything works great and the connection is fast and stable. There is no problems when i try to access the ad-hoc network with a XP machine. I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 on a Dell Inspirion 6400 with proprietary Broadcom STA driver for the network card.

I'm running:CentOS release 5.3 (Final)
when I plug in a Small USB key, hotplug sees the new device, mounts it in userspace and creates a link on the desktop. The user can open the link and read and write to the USB key. I have tested 3 different usb keys and they all work. When I plug in a USB 250 GB drive (Lacie), also fat32, it doesn't mount:
May 11 12:25:29 tinkerer kernel: SCSI device sdf: 488397168 512-byte hdwr sectors (250059 MB)
May 11 12:25:29 tinkerer kernel: sdf: Write Protect is off
May 11 12:25:29 tinkerer kernel: sdf: assuming drive cache: write through
May 11 12:25:29 tinkerer kernel: SCSI device sdf: 488397168 512-byte hdwr sectors (250059 MB
However, I can mount the drive manually as root. The problem is that the user cannot write to the device if it's mounted by root.Is this a problem with hotplug/udev or another way that I can make this device available rw to the user?

I use my ubuntu laptop at work and connect a lot of usb pen drives to my computer. Everyone else I work with use windows and I want to make sure that the usb pen drives don't contain any windows viruses so I don't spread them. The best way for this to be done would be to have the USB pen drives automatically scanned with they are inserted in my ubuntu machine. How to do this?

I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit.
For some reason, the second hard drive (sdb1) is not automatically mounted:
rick@rab-1:/mnt$ sudo fdisk -l
Disk /dev/sda: 500.0 GB, 499989348352 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 60786 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

Before I installed Ubuntu, I installed the RAID software to handle 4 500 GB hard drives - so there are supposed to be two mirrored drives. I'm not an expert in using RAID. I'm assuming it is correctly configured. I only "see" two drives. sda has Ubuntu etc. How can I get sdb1 mounted? I've tried using the palimpsest program but I'm afraid I screw it up. Do I need to re-format sdb1?

I'm running into a weird problem when trying to install from the live CD I'm running. Basically, I have two hard drives: sda, a 160GB HDD which has Windows 7 on it, and is the one I would like to put kubuntu on; and sdb, which is a plain 500GB NTFS file system I keep all my personal stuff on.When I get to 'disk setup' and choose 'install side-by-side', it defaults to sdb instead of sda and I can't change it. I've created a 20GB partition on sda, which is where I want to put kubuntu, but it still defaults to sdb. I also can't figure out how to install to where I want using the advanced partitioning menu.

I have 2 PC : Big and Small. On both, there is Ubuntu Lucid. On Big, there is a WLAN PCI card from D-Link, and on Small an USB-Stick USB from TP-Link.
* On Big, the WLAN connection is performed during the boot, and is active even without opening a session (i.e. if one still on the login screnn of GDM)
* On Small, the WLAN connection is activated only AFTER opening a session.
How can i do on Small to have the same behaviour as on Big ?

Wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction to setup some form of network connection monitoring and logging? As Australia has CRAP broadband and ISP's utilize Peak & Off-Peak download limits I schedule downloads for my Off-Peak times. Well recently my connection drops out exactly when my off-peak time kicks in and requires my modem to be reset to re-establish my connection.
My ISP is denying they are doing this but I happens everyday now and is getting really frustrating. What I want to try and set up is some sort of monitoring to ping my ISP's default gateway so I can prove it drops at a specific time each day. I am sure there would be something I could configure in Ubuntu but I am a newbie to Ubuntu so don't really know how to achieve this.

I have a Dell Studio XPS15 laptop running 11.04 which works flawlessly with my router (it's a broadcom card btw). Now I'm setting up a new laptop for my Father-in-law which is a Dell Inspiron 15 which has intel Centrino 1000 wireless. I've installed and setup 11.04 on it. Everything runs great except..
Now it can see all the access points around so I assume the wireless card is properly detected and working. But when I try to log into my router and give it my password, it just keeps trying to connect and can't. I've double checked the settings with my own laptop and everything seems the same. why it won't log in? I'm leaving it as a dual boot with Win7 and I know that Win7 will log into the same router with the same password.

I added a 1TB USB drive to a Red Hat 5.3 system. I added the following line to the /etc/fstab to automount the drive at startup. If I manually the mount the drive (mount /mnt/external), I can access and read/write to the external USB drive without any issues. My problem is that during the startup process after a reboot, the drive is not being mounted automatically.

I just formatted my iomega 250 gb external HD to ext3. This is where i store media, such as music. What I am attempting to do is take all the music from my 5th gen 80gb ipod (rockbox firmware), and transfer it back onto my external drive, as all my data was (naturally) erased during the format. However, as soon as I plug in my ipod it mounts as usual... but after about 15-20 seconds my external drive unmounts. When i do a 'sudo mount dev/sdc1' it says sdc1 does not exist. How can i fix this? what is the problem? I have my ipod set on /dev/sdd2 and the external drive at /dev/sdc1, each with their own mount point. They each work perfectly independently. I have tried switching usb ports around and rebooting.

I formatted the USB flash drive using Karmic's Format Disk utility (right-click on a volume, select "Format..."), and selected "Encrypted, compatible with Linux (FAT)" from the "Type" drop-down menu.It mounts correctly when I plug it in, and I can access the files just fine. When I unplug the Flash drive without using the 'Safely Remove Drive' option, the icon on my desktop changes its name to '2.0 GB Encrypted', instead of disappearing and unmounting like my unencrypted Flash drives do.
I would like to have encrypted Flash drive treated in the same way as my unencrypted Flash drives, which disappear and unmount when unplugged, even if the 'Remove Safely' menu option isn't used. What can I do to accomplish this?NOTES:When I plug the encrypted Flash drive in, the following line shows up in the output of 'mount'. 'secure' is the name I gave the disk during the format process:
Code:
/dev/mapper/devkit-disks-luks-uuid-302db16c-c6e2-4dd9-a259-436437c76475-uid1005 on /media/secure type vfat
