Ubuntu Networking :: Simple Network Monitor Daemon?
Nov 2, 2010
i have been looking for a simple network monitor daemon for ubuntu, for some time but have not found anything that suits my requirements and from what i've been reading online there seems to be quite alot of other people out there that are looking for the same thing. [URL]...for-linux.html page seems to have the most comprehensive list of similar products but if you read through all of them they don't seem to be what i'd imagine most home users need. here's a list of what i had in mind, if any one uses something that has these features or knows of something that might meet these requirements please let us know! 1)a small lightweight daemon that can be accessed via the panel on gnome 2)has thee ability to monitor eth or ppp (particularly internet traffic)3)can represent this data in a human readable format ie using megabytes and gigabytes 4)can store a history of how much data is being sent and received over long periods of time (like several months)

All i really want to do is be able to ssh into my other linux system. I am not interested in internet sharing, or even file sharing.[linux laptop with unused ethernet port]-windows-mobile-ppc connected by usb for internet-tehtering [linux running on my wii accross the room]-nintendo lan adapter.I want to be able to ssh login to my wii, from my laptop. That is all i want. Do i need a router in between the two for this, or can i just connect them with ethernet cable? No samba, no nfs, no fancy stuff. Just want to be able issue commands from laptop to my wii.

As a user who is comfortable setting up a peer to peer network in Windows, how do I set up a simple peer to peer network with shares, on a standard network infrastructure (ethernet and basic dlink router), using Linux? I have two computers with Ubuntu 10.04, and would like to share files between them.Do I need to set static IP's? Why is only Windows network showing in Places/Networks?
Question two: I have 3 Windows computers (2 = XP, 1 = Win7) on my network, all with shares. When I try to access the windows shares from an Ubuntu machine, I can connect to some shares on some computers without being asked for credentials, however on other shares I am asked for credentials, but the credentials aren't accepted.I am assuming that domain = workgroup, so I enter in the workgroup name, but the dialogue refuses to let me in.

I am using an Ubuntu 64 bit desktop. I need to create a network (the way you create a workgroup in windoz). I have two other machines running Ubuntu also and all connected to a 3-Com switch through ethernet. I would prefer not to use DHCP, and just have a simple network where I can share resources like drives and printers.

I have three PC's. PC-1 is a newish Dell Vostro 320 running Win 7 as the prime OS with Ubuntu Linux 10.10 dual boot under the control of EasyBCD. PC-2 is a Dell Inspiron 6400 running Ubuntu Linux (10.10). PC-3 is an oldish Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop dual booting Win 7 and Ubuntu 10.10. All three PC's share a DSL connection to our ISP and network using the wireless router capability of the DSL box (a Billion 7401 VGP-M). All three PC's can access the internet using the DSL box both wired and wirelessly under Windows or under Linux. PC-1 is the primary PC and runs Win 7.
PC-2 (Ubuntu 10.10) is running fantastically well and can access PC-1 running Win7 as a member of WORKGROUP for print sharing and for file sharing. The primary PC-1 can also see the files on PC-2 as a member of a Windows WORKGROUP. Simple home networking is working as it should with this setup (PC-1 under Win 7 and PC-2 under Ubuntu 10.10). This has been like this since the installation of Ubuntu on PC-2, which included setting up network printing from PC-1 (Win 7) under Samba.
The problem is thus: If I boot PC-1 or PC-3 up under Linux, I lose all networking capability between the three PC's including print and file sharing, but they can all access the internet through wireless or wired connection. I have configured Samba and done all the home networking troubleshooting especially:[URL]..All to no avail. As I said, my aim to ditch Windows and move all three PC's to Linux but I can't do this unless I can get Linux home networking working properly. By properly, I mean all PC's running Linux or two under Linux and one under Windows 7 and be able to share files and a printer attached to PC-1. I am a Linux virgin and am hoping that a knowledgeable person can tell me what's going wrong and point me to setting up a simple home network under Linux. It shouldn't be this hard.

I'm looking for a battery monitor for my panel. I've tried cbatticon and batti which seem very similar. One (I think cbatticon) shows notifications (which I want) but I also want to customise when it shows the notification (specific percentage). I'm looking for something lightweight and that will work with any panel with a notification area (I change from time to time). I've also tried vattery but that looks ugly and doesn't have notifications.

what I want to achieve is just to be able to say to who ever is killing our relatively fast connect that they aren't the only person using the network. Everyone just says "I hardly download anything." which is obviously untruthful as normally I can download at 1.5 MB/s but now loading even google.com takes way too long (same with pinging and all other sites). Once I do this, I can determine whether or not I need to call my ISP and do the long 'on hold' dance and "have you tried rebooting the router" BS.

I need to setup a box to monitor what websites users are accessing on a small network.I don't have a switch with a spam port, but I do have a machine with two nic cards. I would like to set it up between the router and cable modem so that users won't know it is there but it logs all the websites that are being accessed.

My network monitor seems to have disappeared from the taskbar.I tried right clicking and "Add Pannel" however I do not see "Network Monitor" in the list.I tried running Code:nm-applet --sm-disableBut this gave me the errorI figure this because it's already running so I tried to killall and try it againThis time I getCode:** Message: applet now removed from the notification area** Message: applet now embedded in the notification area** (nm-apoplet:4498): old state indicates that this was not a disconnect 0I see a 1-2 pixel sliver of something appear briefly in my taskbar and then it disappears, I assume this was the n ntly installed tshark (curses-based version of wireshark)

I am connected to a network with free traffic inside it and post-paid outer traffic. So I need a way to be able to separately monitor the download traffic from inside and outside the network. All the solutions I`ve found for now offer monitoring of ALL up/down traffic.
So, I want to get separate statistics on these:
1 — 81.89.188.0/23, 217.197.9.0/24
2. — 81.89.186.0/23
3. — 81.89.178.0/23
4. — 81.89.176.0/23
5. — 81.89.180.0/24
9. — 217.197.12.0/24
[Code]...
UPD: I`m connected to the internet through the network`s gate, so all the traffic comes through eth0. I wish to separate traffic incoming from the IPs on top from all other traffic

i have recently had a house mate move in and he is using my wireless network, even though i asked him not to give out the network key to his friends either he has or they have hacked my network and are using it when they come over, is there a program i can use to monitor the number of computers that are connected to my network and block them, or is there a way i can just wee what is going on. They seem to just connect and i don't want to have to change the password particularly because that involves changing it on multiple devices.

I'd like to create a couple of upstart scripts for some network service daemons (eg. usenet downloading service, torrent service, media management services, etc).Basically they should start after the network service is started and the system is running (runlevel 2?) but I'm just wondering if anybody has an example script or more specific start/stop conditions that I can use.

Dear all, I have system running LAMP and acting as a regular webserver. After running the setup for quite some months, I start having major issues:Symptoms:1. Applications do not respond neither from LAN nor WAN - SSH daemon, Apache, MySQL, FTP2. Network still seems to work for ping and port listeners3. Telnet is still successful for 21, 22, 80, 33064. Server has to be restarted manuallyTrying to find out the issue, I went through /var/log/ looking for major issues or warnings. But nothing seemed plausible to me to understand the issue - except I knew I was running out of disk space a few times. Not being able to identify nor replicate the issue, I replaced the hardware running 24x7 since quite a few years. Doing this, I migrated at the same time from OpenSUSE 10.1 to 11.3.The machine itself is behind a firewall and only the above mentioned standard ports are accessible

I've been kind of spoiled by Slackware, where updating an installation without networking is just a matter of storing all the updated packages somewhere (directory, CD, USB, etc.) and doing a:
Code:
upgradepkg *.tgz
I'm trying to figure out how to achieve similar simplicity on Ubuntu (specifically, Ubuntu 8.10). I know how to update the packages on the live CD itself (and have done it several times), but in this particular case I need to install using the unedited, official CD.
I'm currently looking at this (and will set up a VirtualBox image to try it out), but it seems to me like the actual packages are never even mentioned in the article, only the meta-data. I need to be able to do an apt-get update/upgrade on this box and have it use the updated packages which I will have stored on a mounted filesystem.

I'm thrilled using wicd to connect to wireless networks. But when I suspend my laptop using the special keys, I just want to disconnect from wireless without having to use any kind of GUI or curses user interface. It says in the documentation that wicd works by sending DBUS messages, so presumably it's possible to write a command that talks to the daemon directly. But I can't figure out how.Does anybody know by means of what shell command I can tell the wicd daemon to disconnect me from my wireless network?

Probably because I don't know what to put in some of the fields. So; all I want to do is to run my own e-mail server for my business. The network is set up, the web server is running, but I'm having no end of trouble with YAST and the e-mail server.I have a single server running open suse 11.3 32 bit. It is attached to a modem/router. I have a static IP address for my registered domain. The server has a static IP address (192.168.1.8 in this case). My server is NOT running either a DHCP server nor a DNS server - there is no need, since there is nothing else on this box. It has only one network connection - eth0.
I'm trying to set up an e-mail server. I have been unable to get an 'advanced' implementation to work because all attempts to create a suitable server certificate fail. So for now I'll stick with a 'standard' set up.I don't know what I should put in such fields as 'outgoing mail server' (I've assumed I should use the FQDN of my server);I've no idea what 'masquerading' is for or what I should do with it;I don't know what I'm supposed to put in the 'outgoing mail server' in the 'authentication' section;I don't know what to put in the 'downloading' section;and I don't know what 'accept remote SMTP connections' does.I can get the server to start, but any attempt to retrieve e-mail from it ends in an authorisation failure - the syslog shows a sign-on attempt from my 'real' IP address and some form of numeric userid which cannot be found. So, if anyone can tell me what to put in YAST to make it work, I'd be a very happy chap.
Yes, I can telnet to 'my.server.my.domain' 25, so something must be right. But my Linux knowledge is not enough to get it working properly.

Can you "split" a network interface in Ubuntu, similar to how airmon-ng lets you use your wireless card in managed and monitor mode, by making another interface out of the same hardware? I know it'd be slower, but I'd still like to do it.

After installing 11.4, I need to type in the command to update the firmware for a broadcom wifi adapter. Then I needed to reboot, twice, before the system knew to use the adapter (where the adapter wifi light goes from orange to blue).
Then I needed to add my wireless network and type in my key. But the key does not take. If I click on my wireless network icon, it just re-asks for the key and does not connect nor give any other message. Network icon continues to display no connection.
So I need to reboot again.
When the system starts again, the adapter is blue, I click on the icon for my wifi network and it connects without asking for my key and I can then set to start my wifi by default.
Now my wifi works fine.

I've read a lot about what SSH does, and how to do it on some networks, but none of them quite cover how to do it on just a network with a bunch of computers on it. I have no server or anything, just a router with some computer connected through ethernet or wireless. All of the Ubuntu computer have me as a user, and I want to be able to access any specific one. How do I do this? Also, if I'm not at home, how can I access any of my accounts from whichever computer I wish to access?
