Ubuntu Networking :: Set Wireless Speed In Natty?

Mar 28, 2011

How do you set wireless speed in natty? I've tried

Code:
sudo iwconfig wlan0 rate 54M

but nothing happens. I've tried this with wireless enabled and disabled (using network-manager), with and without the module loaded (ath9k) and using the solution provided in some forums (adding the command in /etc/rc.local and in a script in /etc/network/if-up.d) but to no avail... link speed always shows up as 65M.

May 13, 2010

I recently got karoo broadband installed, the speed is normally 8mbps but the longer I am connected to my router the slower it gets, I have to disconnect and reconnect to the router to get back to full speed, is this due to a bad wireless driver or do I need new drivers or a better router.

Ubuntu Networking :: 10.10 - Very Slow Wireless Speed

Mar 28, 2011

I have very suboptimal Internet speed in Wifi with Ubuntu. Normally in WIndows 7 I get download speeds up to 800 KB/s and a very fast Wifi experience, but in Ubuntu I get 100KB/s maximum and web page load speed is very extremely slow. Also, pinging to AP often gives very high response times and a lot of lost packages while in Windows they are very low and none packages are lost. I have a Netgear wg111v3 which worked out of box when I installed Ubuntu but always with this problem. It is updated and I've reinstalled Ubuntu many times..

Also I forgot to say that in Ubuntu the connection goes down very often and sometimes will not connect again until I reboot. Again in Windows never happened that.

Ubuntu Networking :: No More Wireless Upon Natty Upgrade?

May 8, 2011

I just updated my work laptop to Natty: perfect. My home server: perfect. My oldish home laptop: no more wireless. [I use wicd instead of Knetwork (or whatever it's called) because I want a permanent connection no matter the user]

I have a D-Link DWA-645. I get the whole stage: connecting, authenticating, etc... and bad password at the end. The password is correct (hasn't changed during upgrade). I also tried disabling WPA and it still won't connect. That's wlan2.

I also tried with an older PCMCIA card that _used_ to work on ubuntu 9, but stopped on version 10: a D-LinkDWL-G650. It doesn't even show up as wlan0 as it used to. I also tried with a USB-wifi DWL-G122 which has always worked on every version of Ubuntu [I don't normally use it because it's not practical on a laptop]. I see it as wlan1, but same thing: won't connect. Note that like with wlan2 I can scan for networks and see several around. For instance:

Code:
$ iwconfig
IEEE 802.11bg
ESSID: off/any
Mode: managed
Access point: not associated
Tx power: 20 dBm
Retry long limit: 7

[Code]...

[Edit]
Some more info: the access point works fine, I can connect with another device. The driver in use by Ubuntu is ath9k. Using KnetworkManager instead of wicd doesn't change anything.

Ubuntu Networking :: 8.04 - Wireless Speed Slow / Drop

Jan 15, 2010

I've been using Ubuntu 8.04 for about a year and the wireless has been fine but now it's gone screwy and I can't figure out why. This has happened on my laptop and wife's who uses Ubuntu Hardy also. The speed drops to almost 0 mb/s whenever the signal strength is less than 95%.

It isn't the internet connection as vista (I dual boot) works fine below 95% signal strength. To get the internet speed to be at a level that can load an internet page, I have to within 3 feet of the router!! Both of the laptops don't use ndiswrapper, the internet connected straight away from a fresh install.

Ubuntu Networking :: 10.10 - Low Download Speed On Wireless Connection

Feb 22, 2011

I have installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my Dell Latitude D830 laptop using the Wubi installer. Everything seems to be working fine except for my wireless connection. When I plug in my wired connection and test on speedtest.net I get download speeds of 20MB/second. However, when I switch to my wireless connection, I barely break 1MB/second. I have an Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG wireless adapter. I have scoured this forum, Google, everywhere I can think of to find a solution and none seem to work for me. I love Ubuntu but this might be a deal breaker...

Ubuntu Networking :: Natty Narwhal Wireless Disconnects?

May 8, 2011

I recently upgraded from Maverick Meerkat to (classic) Natty Narwhal Ubuntu Linux. I am running on a Toshiba Satellite A665 (Intel i7). I use a wireless internet connection. Under Maverick, I had no issues. Under the update, I am finding that occasionally things stop working: The indicator Applet looks fine, but from a terminal, I find that I am no longer able to ping my own router (less than 10 feet away.) This behavior occurs after working fine for a few hours. I am unsure if anything in particular triggers it (I will report back if I determine a particular cause). I have a few other computers (2 running Windows, and the other Maverick Meerkat) -- and they are unaffected. Turning wireless off and on resolves the issue for me on Natty. Rebooting also works. Here's some hopefully relevant technical details about my system:

Code:
~$ rfkill list all
0: phy0: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: no

Ubuntu Networking :: Unstable Wireless Connection On Natty 11.04

May 19, 2011

I'm using an Atheros ath9k wireless card that has been pretty stable since Ubuntu 9.04. I did a clean install of Natty and ever since my wireless connection has been pretty unstable.

It doesn't actually disconnects but I lose all connectivity. The wifi card continues loaded with a static IP Address assigned to it but I cannot connect to anything. The only way to fix it is restating the network manager and I have to do it at least a couple of times every day.

I tried to whitelist ath_pci on /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-ath_pci.conf but the problem still persists. Also yesterday I enabled the ubuntu backports on my software sources but so far no kernel updates.

Here are some of the messages filling up the logs:

Networking :: Wireless Download Speed Limited To 64 Kbps

Sep 12, 2010

I am connecting from this Ubuntu 9.10 computer to a WRT54G running dd-wrt, over WPA2 AES. Normally, everything works fine and I get very satisfactory download speeds; usually 1.5+ Mbps. Sometimes though, usually after restarting networking a lot, i.e. /etc/init.d/networking restart, the download speed seems to be limited to around 64-70 kbps. It also happened recently when I disconnected from a vpn with vpnc. It's really strange because it has nothing to do with changing any settings.

The only things I can think of are POSSIBLY wpa_supplicant causing problems because that's the only thing besides networking that's restarted. It could be related to my router config but I can't imagine what because it runs so fast normally. Rebooting the router doesn't fix it. Restarting the network, manually killing wpa_supplicant, rebooting the router. None of these seem to fix it. The only way I've found is to just reboot. Obviously, something breaks at some point that isn't affected again by anything but a reboot.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Not Working: Natty Narwhal In VMWare Workstation

Jul 30, 2011

I started playing with Natty Narwhal (11.04) last week. I have a Toshiba Portege R700 laptop with 4GB of memory. Firstly, let me say that when I run 11.04 on the bare metal laptop (installed via WUBI) it appears to work flawlessly. That is, both the ethernet (hard wired) network and the wifi network work just fine. The networking problem occurs when I try to run 11.04 as a (Type 2) VM in VMWare workstation with an underlying o/s of Windows 7 Enterprise.

In this mode, the ethernet network works fine but the wireless network does not work. The o/s does not even see the wireless card. I have downloaded and installed about 216 MB of updates from the update center to no avail. I have "bridged" the VMWare "virtual switch" across to both the ethernet port and the wireless port (see below):Basically, it appears that the interface is not being presented to the VM.Also, of interest, Unity which works fine on the bare metal install does not run on the Ubuntu 11.04 VM.

Networking :: Wireless Is Flakey -- Dropped Connections, Poor Speed?

My wireless is flakey -- dropped connections, poor speed, etc. As diagnosis, I loaded the 'wavemon' utility so that I might watch the radio and signal and noise.Things will be good, then fall off, then get better, then go away entirely. Repeat continuously and randomly. For these experiments, my laptops -- more than one -- are on a table. The table is roughly 15-20 ft laterally from the access point. The access point is also 8 ft above the floor vs. 3 ft table height.(grin) While the signal "wobbles" everything else is mechanically stable and otherwise not moving.

General :: Wireless Networking - Wi-Fi Connection Download Speed Is Cut In Half In Mint?

Sep 19, 2011

I have a pretty decent DSL connection that usually gave me about 105KB/second download speed over wifi. The "official" download speed was 1.5 megabits so I should have been getting a bit more, but that's not my question.

I recently switched to Mint from Ubuntu. Now my download speed is significantly slower, to the tune of 45 KB/second. Since the connection runs at normal speed when I connect via an ethernet cable, my guess is that mint doesn't give enough power to the wifi card. Is there any way I can fix that?

Can I make it automatically "just work", so that the right network is chosen for Internet traffic? Otherwise, what's the workaround?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: No Sound And Speed Up Multimedia Files In Natty 11.04?

May 9, 2011

so i don't know what happened, but all multimedia files are suddenly speed up/and-or with no sound (ubuntu 11.04 with all recent updates, firefox 4, adobe flash-instick etc.)

if i try to play a flash movie on for instance videos it's sped-up with no sound, if i play an mp3 song (i use exaile) the bar is sped up and there's no sound either, if i start an avi movie (vlc) it's not sped up but there's no sound though.

when i log in to the system the logging in jingle is not playing, so basically the sound just got turned off for some reason but according to the soundbar it should be on.

this problem started just recently. i don't know if it has to do with recent updates or that my log in re-started a couple of times after using a kde program (kmess).

Ubuntu :: Natty - Wireless Not Connecting

Well, the problem is, I can see all the networks around me, but I can't connect to them. when I click on my wireless network to connect, it stops when is getting the ip (from the dhcp server in the modem) and it doesn't connect, doesn't show any message, anything.

But different as I've seen from another posts my K/Ubuntu don't freeze. Ubuntu :: Slow Download Speed On Wireless Connection

Jun 5, 2010

Basically the problem is a slow download speed over my wireless connection that does not occur in Windows Vista. The reason I'm so annoyed is that the speed is not constantly slow. It bursts at around 600kb/s (good for my internet connection). The problem is that while trying to download a file it bursts for about a second, then total throughput decreases to +/- 1kb/s for a few seconds, then another burst and so on. Note the file I'm downloading is a http:// download, not p2p or anything. I've attached a screenshot of the System Monitor.

Some additional info. I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 with all available updates installed. The browser in use is Google Chrome.
