Ubuntu Networking :: Running Xbmc4xbox - Xbox 360 - Neither Of The Two Are Recognizing By The Network
Mar 27, 2011
I am using ubuntu 10.04 LTS. I have an modded xbox (original) running xbmc4xbox as well as a xbox 360 and neither of the two are recognizing by ubuntu on the network. For this post I will refer to the xbox (original) for simplicity I'm hoping.
O.K. I've tried a couple different things, and SUDO APT has become apart of my life, but once again not sure where or what is best & i end up trying them all. For instance Upnp, samba configurations, mediatomb. Also, when I go to Places>Network>Windows Network I receive this message "Unable to mount location Failed to retrieve share list from server" I dont know what to address first. And I'm not sure how to work those programs, for I'm a novice to linux computing and surly that part of the problem. But I have read scores of forums and post as well as ..... videos and my system is not doing what it supposed to do. I figure with the ubuntu desktop at etho0 and the down stairs xbox plugged in the same linksys router and another xbox up stairs connected through wireless adapter and they all connect to the internet fine I am even able to connect between both xbox's and share files. I should be able to see my network on ubuntu. But i don't. I'm completely stumped and have been at this for, well I embarrassed to say as I am a computer repair tech by trade. But I need help I really want to stream movies to my chidrens rooms and my new Apex 40" Class 1080p 60Hz LCD HDTV - Black (LD408

My son has been using 9.10 and when he wanted to play on his XBox live, we just connected a ethernet cable to the Xbox and laptop then clicked on the wireless icon and clicked on wired connection and then he could play on his Xbox. But since upgrading to 10.04 this just will not work. We have tried with the XBox off and on, the wired connection connects but the XBox will not find the connection.

I am a Windows refugee who discovered Ubuntu as a way to save my files from my virus-ravaged computer. Had no installation discs for Windows, so when I had to wipe my hard drive and start over, I decided to give Ubuntu a try. I've had mixed success, but that's another post...
Right now, the problem is that I installed 10.10 two weeks ago and was able to connect to the Internet with no problems - until yesterday. Suddenly, our wireless network (the only one in the vicinity) does not come up as available in Network Manager. In fact, the entire wireless option disappeared. I know there are many posts and threads on here about this, but weeding through them trying to find an answer is more frustrating than actually dealing with the problem. I know the router works because I can post on this forum from the Macbook. I really like Ubuntu and would like to keep using it, but not being able to connect to the Internet now on top of the other issues I've had is making me doubt I want to continue down this Linux road.
P.S. When I attempted an analysis through System Testing, it said something about there being no proprietary drivers?

ive just installed ubunutu 10.10 and its connected to the internet via a wireless conection. However I would like to share the connection with an xbox 360 connected to the computer via a ethernet cable. I changed the method under ip4 in the auto eth0 wire connection to "shared to other computers" aplyed and restarted, however whenever the 360 tries to connect itll take a while and then say unable to connect. I also tried this using a ps3 and the ps3 says timed out waiting for ip address. Ive doen this on windows by bridging the connection and it worked without the use of a crossover wire. Would I need a crossover wire?

I installed ldap on my server and one of my client machines yesterday.It also now won't let me get into graphical utilities that require root privileges; synaptic for example. It comes back with "incorrect password". I noticed that in the terminal it now requires me to enter two passwords to become root: the root password and the ldap password. I wonder if the two are related.I'm not sure what information to post; there's a ton of configuration files associated with this setup. Can somebody help me troubleshoot this? Thanks!

Hi. I have Ubuntu 10.04, nm-applet is running in the background, my battery icon and sound icon are showing but my network icon has been missing for the past 2 days. It was working fine before but now it's not. How can I fix this issue if I don't have an ethernet cord? Is there a way to roll back the recent updates or do I need to reinstall my network manager?
I've tried restarting the system and I've tried killing nm-applet and reloading it using Alt F2. I get some Debug error.
When I try to run nm-applet --sm-disable
It says an instance is already running and then gives me a warning.
I tried removing "iface eth0 inet dhcp" from /etc/network/interfaces and then tried restarting by "sudo /etc/initi.d/networking restart"
It says:
What can I do to connect to the internet? I have a flash stick if its possible to download a .deb package on this mac and transfer it over to my other laptop to fix the problem. If its possible.

I were to download a demo from [URL] would it save the demo to my laptop and then I could transfer it to my Xbox via Ethernet cable, even though my laptop has Ubuntu on it or does it have to be Windows computer?
I ask, b/c either way it is just a file on my laptop, regardless of the OS.
So, what does the community think?

Ive got my laptop hindered up to my xbox 360 it has windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.04. i realy want to get rid of windows and the only reason i keep it around is because ics sharing works realy well for connecting to xbox live.
I recently discovered that you can (ics) with ubuntu which is awesome only problem is
i cant figure out how to set it up to stop it having moderate NAT so i can play games that require an open NAT. its probably due to the ports not being fowarded properly or somthing and/or the face that my xbox needs a static ip placed out side the routers firewall on the DMZ setting .

Alright, I'm running Ubuntu KK 9.10 and I've probably read every ICS tutorial on ubuntuforums. I'm running wireless internet via a Linksys router and have a LAN card in my system as well.
(lshw -c network)
Code:
I tried the easy route with 9.10 (setting my wireless to DHCP and LAN to share connection) and although Ubuntu recognizes the Xbox when its turned on (I get a nice notification saying my wired connection is active) the Xbox gets no internet, and doesn't even recognize the connection. (when I tested the connection it failed before it even hit network...)

I want to play my videos on my xbox off of my pc [ubuntu10.10]. I have Ushare configured as follows:
USHARE_NAME=tom-ubuntu
USHARE_IFACE=xbox (I created a new wired connection in the network manager (IPV4 set to shared to other computers and that's what I named it).
USHARE_PORT=49200 (not sure if that's correct or how I'd go about finding the port)
USHARE_TELNET_PORT=
USHARE_DIR=/home/slayton/Videos/
USHARE_OVERRIDE_ICONV_ERR=
ENABLE_WEB=yes
ENABLE_TELNET=no
ENABLE_XBOX=yes
ENABLE_DLNA=no
On my xbox I go to test PC connection. It connects to the network but not the PC and goes to PC Not Listed.

I am a semi-noob on this and I have problems getting my emacs recognizing .tex as latex and even running latex-mode. Usually when you run latex-mode (M-x : latex-mode) emacs should switch to latex-mode, but nothing happens in my case. The menu bar still show the TeX options, highlighting remains the same etc.
I am running emacs 23.1.1 (x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version 2.10.4), this is on a university system so I don't know much about it.

I had network manager running on my netbook karma install, but when I installed VNC as another display, logged into that other display and accidentally clicked on not to run network manager on startup cause there is already one running, it screwed up the network manager auto startup on my normal netbook display.I tried adding it back into auto start in settings but that has not worked.As always, thanks for any help you can give me getting this to auto start again on login, without deleting my kde cache(cos it is setup the way I want it).

I am a bit new to this - Ubuntu is ok with a gui but I am struggling with commands and I think I may have disabled Network Manager. The icon is there in the notification area but when I try to connect it says NetworkManager is not running and when I rightclick the icon the "enable networking" box is greyed out. It is on a desktop which now has no net access so I have not tried to remove and reinstall network-manager.

So I want to run a Minecraft Server on my computer running Ubuntu 11.04. My goal is to have the server running over my network through one of the virtual terminals without any type of GUI running (to conserve resources). I'm shutting down the ubuntu GUI using the command:
Code: sudo service gdm stop which does a great job, but it also kills my wireless connection.I've tried editing my /etc/network/interfaces, and even uninstalling the gnome network mananger, but nothing seems to work. Can anybody help?

I have recently set up a network of 21 computers running Edubuntu 10.10 I use iTalc to communicate with the pcs and also to shutdown all of them at once. The only problem I have, is it doesn't start up again with iTalc. So I switched to ClusterSSH. Only problem I have now is that everytime I run cssh, I need to manually add IP addresses of all the pc's, before I can start issuing commands. Is there a config file or something I can populate with all the IP addresses so that it starts up with all of them already added? And while we are at it, the command to start up a computer on the network?

I managed to get the older, weaker box on the net and running simply by plugging in the Belkin N-wireless adapter, discovering the Network Manager icon (this really should also be accessible from the system pull-down menu), left clicking to see all the local networks, selecting mine, and inputting the security key, and rebooting. Voila!)However, on the newer, more powerful box, the network Manager gives me nothing but "Wired connection" at every boot (there is no such connection), I created a wireless connection under the settings (accessed through create VPN settings), but the Manager sees no wireless networks. Reboot solves nothing Network Manager is not seeing anything, I suspect that the card although powered by the USB, is not being seen by the system.

my card is not recognized in any way by ifconfig or iwconfig as shown below, but is visible via lsusb. It is 54Mb usb, and has a detachable antenna with the Atheros chipset shown below. I have removed (by #) the ath_pci from the blacklist under /etc/modprobe.d but cannot seem to start this still. I used compat-wireless-2010-06-01 (06-12 appeared to have errors I could not easily overcome). The lspci -nn command only shows my internal broadcom which I am not currently using. My goal is to do wireless research so I need the atheros (among others)...
my hw: Dell series n, TP-Link's TL-WN422G USB wireless stick
$ lsusb | grep Ath
Bus 001 Device 004: ID 0cf3:1006 Atheros Communications, Inc.
$ lsmod | grep ath
ath9k 71145 0
[Code]....
Seems to me that their should only be one ath9k driver, but several are loaded. Are all required for functionality perhaps?

After trying to deal with a very frustrating problem in Ubuntu 11.04, which caused my Eee Pc 1001PX to freeze any time I connect it to a wireless network. It worked Perfectly using my ZTE WCDMA Mobile broadband modem though. I gave up - and Formatted my netbook, Downgrading it to Ubuntu 10.10. Now the problem is the exact opposite:
The Wireless works perfectly, But the Modem Is causing the trouble.
Here is the problem:
Whenever I reboot the Computer, It doesn't recognize the modem. If I right click the networks button on the top, go to edit connections, and Delete the mobile broadband connection I had previously configured, then unplug the device (usb) and reconnect it, The computer recognizes it, allowing me to reconfigure the connection (make a new mobile broadband connection). As you can guess, repeating this after every reboot is rather irritating.
Some Technical Details:
My pc: Asus Eee Pc 1001PX
My Mobile Modem: Zte WCDMA Netstick.
When I tried to update my Kernel, the Wireless Problem from Ubuntu 11.04 was back, and I had to reformat.
